Thinking, Fast and Slow | Daniel Kahneman
post image

I can't stop thinking about the peak-end rule mentioned in this book (e.g., we judge experiences like reading a book based on the most intense/peak experience and the ending, and not based on the overall experience of the book). So many books have become "picks" ?for me despite being mostly a slog by delivering with a WOW ending or an insane plot twist. Movies are the same. Do you find this with your reading? (Photo credit: UX Booth)

TheWordJar Agreed! It also works with other way for me...a book could have been a pick, but then something insanely stupid happens and wrecks the whole experience. (Perhaps that's an "unpleasant peak" as mentioned in your post.) 2y
jeff @TheWordJar Definitely works the other way as well! 2y
Zelma I would tend to agree except that I often love and recommend books that have less-than-successful endings. A story can be fantastic and then a mediocre ending but I still love the book. 2y
See All 7 Comments
Literaryunicorn @Zelma I think you hit on something there - maybe when the ending is a shock or twist, the author has been writing TO that ending and not in service of just telling a great story. I almost think a lot of modern readers want that zinger ending and are willing to sacrifice good storytelling and beautiful prose to get there. 2y
Zelma @Literaryunicorn I can totally see that. And some books work really well with a twist ending, but there is a place for stories that end with a more realistic or even open ending. I love those because that's how life works. Sometimes I want to believe that the characters have a life or more adventure beyond the page. 2y
jeff @Zelma @Literaryunicorn Good points! Some books dance just based on prose, exposition, good storytelling, etc., and regardless of the ending, I am still going to love the book. 2y
minkyb Love this discussion. The comments are all spot on. My favorite image is books that just dance based on prose. I am always in the mood for those! @Zelma @Literaryunicorn 2y

Fist bumps to David McCullough for this thrilling account of how we first took flight. Orville and Wilbur succeeded where bigger budgets and more resources failed by studying birds, leveraging their skills as mechanics and through countless hours of research and good ol' fashioned trial and error. A trip to the Smithsonian to see the Flyer firsthand is now on my bucket list! Inspiring.

For anyone who hasn't read David Mitchell (e.g., me), this tale about a soul-sucking haunted house spanning generations is a great way to get hooked. For those who have, there are familiar characters ... and more to come for them after Slade House.🤘

Rio_Youers I'm closing in on the end of this one. Beautifully written and kind of trippy. Really enjoying it. 3y
jeff @Rio_Youers - Very trippy. The gamer in me would love to see a Slade House adaptation on an Oculus VR headset. 3y
Rio_Youers That'd be something. V.O. -- Virtual Orison. 3y
thmscmns I heard it was a companion novel to Bone Clocks. Can this be read as a standalone novel? 3y
jeff @thomasandbooks - Yes, can definitely be read as standalone. 3y

SGJ Looks like a tricksy book, as Gollum might say. Trying to steal time for it. 3y
thepaulhoa How can we teach children to read if they can't fit into the building?!?? 3y

Pessl is a writing powerhouse. LOVED this book, a clever construct for a coming of age meets murder mystery packaged in a syllabus of classic book chapters and a "final exam" that makes you want to turn back to page one to fill in the details.?

todd I'm insanely intrigued 3y
Joshsandaker Wow, that really does sound awesome. Goes on the to-read list! 3y
CherylRussell And another book gets added to the "to be read" list. ? 3y
MarisaColaneri I am so pleased to hear that you enjoyed it! You must read Night Film, as well. I'm re-reading it myself at the moment. Looking forward to discussing in Nola! 3y

Treasures from two recent visits to Park Road Books in CLT. I have a book problem.

jeff @CherylRussell, @rebeccaschinsky - I snagged the last copy of "the unfinished world" and got the bookstore owner excited about the book. +1 for your Litfluence. ?? 3y
todd Shotgun to borrow "Unfinished World" after you've read it. 3y
Connie Best problem to have! 😃 3y
