The Book Thief was really good, way better than the movie. Zusak did a really good job writing this, especially with having death as the narrator.

This was one of the best books I have ever read! It was so easy to visualize the setting and the characters were so lovable and relatable! The choice to have death narrate the book was absolutely genius! I 110% recommend this book!

What a very touching way to remember and honor Sharon, our Litsy family member, who recently passed away. I did not know her well, but what she gave generously to this community will be missed.
Sharon had given 5 Stars to The Book Thief and described it as beautiful writing that captured her heart.
I read this book in her memory ( @sharread ).

Very good read. Although a longer book, it captured my attention as the reader through the interesting narration and the several heartbreaking events. I'm not one for historical fiction, yet this book was very well written that even those who don't enjoy it much may find this book as something worth reading. Maybe they'll find their accordion through this.

Thanks @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks for the copy and for my sister‘s incessant demands for me to read this book! Through the majority of it I was very much enjoying it but I don‘t think I was as blown away with the book as I wanted to be, and the narrator even gives you multiple glimpses of the ending. However, when the ending came it hit me like a train, many tears were shed, and now I can‘t stop thinking about it! I highly recommend it!

Nikki_E I‘m terrified to reread this because I worry that it won‘t live up to my first impression. 4mo

Obviously I don‘t want to spoil the book if anyone else has put off reading it like I had, but I will warn you that I cried. I take that back… I sobbed, while reading the end of this book. The Book Thief was so much more than another WWII historical fiction novel. I was truly taken by surprise by how much I cared about the characters by the end of the book. Markus Zusak is certainly a creative genius for writing such a wonderful novel!

I can‘t believe it took me as long as it has to read this book.
This book is beautifully written and haunting. It‘s not a quick or easy read but worth it. Set during the Holocaust, but unique as it‘s narrated by Death and shows how many times he came into close contact with our main character Liesel as she grows up during this time. Absolutely love her friendship with Max. The way this book made me cry, it‘s surprising I‘m still lucid.

I don‘t know how to write a review that could possibly encapsulate the wonder that is TBT. I don‘t know how to show you how much it resonated with me or how much I fell in love with it. I don‘t know how I can convince you to read it, or show you just how much you‘re missing. It rendered me speechless I can‘t even wrap my head around how it‘s even possible to write something so devastatingly beautiful. Anyways, read it. It‘ll show you something.

'Devastatingly beautiful' is perhaps a good way to describe this book. Set in a war-ravaged Germany, the book, narrated by Death himself, tells the story of a teenage girl and her friendships with people and words. It will break your heart for sure, but it will also teach you that love costs nothing, and that words, indeed, can start and stop wars. Must-read!

I heard some people don‘t read prologues because the scene described reappears later in the story & I heard some people DO read prologues because it adds information.📖So my question is, Littens do you read prologues &/or epilogues?🧐

TrishB All of them! 12mo
Cathythoughts Me too ... I read them all 👍🏻❤️ 12mo
peanutnine Gotta read every page! If the author includes it, it must be important 12mo
See All 16 Comments
jessinikkip All the time. Why wouldnt you?! The author went through the work to include it, it has got to be important. It may not make sense now, on first resd but it will later. 12mo
KathyWheeler Not reading the prologue seems to me the same as not reading the epilogue. Why would you skip it? It‘s there for a reason. I had no idea some people don‘t read the prologue. It usually contains information that illuminates everything that comes after. An epilogue sometimes changes the entire meaning of the book. If you don‘t read the epilogue to Joe Hill‘s The Fireman, you‘ve read a completely different book than I did, for instance. (edited) 12mo
ilanakeukake @TrishB Same!!📖 12mo
ilanakeukake @Cathythoughts Same! I read everything between the covers, even the acknowledgments sometimes.🦩 12mo
ilanakeukake @peanutnine Agreed. I‘d feel like I‘m missing something if I just skipped the prologue & epilogue. 🦤 12mo
rwmg I always read the prologue (though saying "the prologue" I feel I'm channelling Frankie Howerd), and rather more cautiously the epilogue. I have read epilogues which change the entire book for the worse. I tend to read Introductions after the book because Spoilers (now channelling River Song) 12mo
ilanakeukake @jessinikkip I 100% agree. I especially like it when I‘m reading a thriller & the prologue is cryptic. When I read on & finally find out how the prologue relates to the book, it‘s like adding the last piece to a jigsaw puzzle & hearing the satisfying *click*🧩 12mo
ilanakeukake @KathyWheeler You, my friend, just made me curious about The Fireman.🧯 Should I add it to my stack? Is it any good? I love when epilogues change the meaning of the whole story.🦑 12mo
ilanakeukake @rwmg Hmmm, reading prologues after the book, eh? That‘s interesting, I never heard of that one before.🐟 But I get your reasoning, you want to avoid spoilers.🚫 Do you find that many prologues contain spoilers? Most of the ones I‘ve read so far don‘t, they‘re actually enigmatic (e.g. someone we know by Shari Lapena). What‘s your experience been like so far? Also who wrote River Song?🌊 Was it any good? Might add it to my stack.📚 12mo
rwmg @ilanakeukake No, I read prologues first, but introductions afterwards. The intros are usually by a different author writing about a classic. River Song is a character on Doctor Who. "Spoilers" and " Hello, Sweetie" are her catch phrases 12mo
ilanakeukake @rwmg Gotcha. I completely misunderstood your first comment.🤦🏾‍♀️ Glad you clarified!🐋 12mo
KathyWheeler @ilanakeukake I love almost everything Joe Hill has written. N0S4A2 is my favorite, but I liked The Fireman too. Some people don‘t like dystopian fiction, though, and The Fireman is that. 12mo
ilanakeukake @KathyWheeler Will check both those books out. Thanks! 🐏 12mo

5 stars baby. This book is beautifully and brilliantly written. Every character in this book literally seduces death. Most of the characters shared 3 things among them: they were brave, kind and deserved better. I love my Hubermanns, Steiners, Vandenburgs and Holtzapfels. They have my whole heart. Leisel Meminger really deserved this family.

Hitler's reign through the eyes of a young girl who is obsessed with books, which are hard to come by. The poor become poorer, boys are sent to train to join the army and men are enlisted. Those who do not join Hitler are seen as traitors and their lives are at stake. Sons never make it home, Jewish parades are thrown to showcase the weak, dying, famished Jews held in captivity. Heartbreaking. A wonderful read. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
