Cuckoo's Calling
Cuckoo's Calling | Robert Galbraith
A brilliant debut mystery in a classic vein: Detective Cormoran Strike investigates a supermodel's suicide. After losing his leg to a land mine in Afghanistan, Cormoran Strike is barely scraping by as a private investigator. Strike is down to one client, and creditors are calling. He has also just broken up with his longtime girlfriend and is living in his office. Then John Bristow walks through his door with an amazing story: His sister, thelegendary supermodel Lula Landry, known to her friends as the Cuckoo, famously fell to her death a few months earlier. The police ruled it a suicide, but John refuses to believe that. The case plunges Strike into the world of multimillionaire beauties, rock-star boyfriends, and desperate designers, and it introduces him to every variety of pleasure, enticement, seduction, and delusion known to man. You may think you know detectives, but you've never met one quite like Strike. You may think you know about the wealthy and famous, but you've never seen them under an investigation like this. Introducing Cormoran Strike, this is the acclaimed first crime novel by J.K. Rowling, writing under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith.

Great story of a private detective trying to solve the apparent suicide of a model on behalf of the model's adoptive brother. His assistant, Robin, is an aspiring detective and their relationship is interesting, complicated by Robin's fiancee Matthew, who sounds a bit dull. Can't get a clear picture of what Strike (detective) looks like - is he a bit fat and brutish, or is he a bit sexy? Hard to tell - maybe that says more about my preferences!

Finally started this series. Read the first book, then had to immediately watch the TV adaptation. (The book was better.)
I liked the book, but didn‘t love it. Thought there was almost too much excessive detail. Started kind of slow, but the characters grew on me. Initially reminded me a lot of Kate Atkinson‘s Jackson Brodie series, though not as quirky.
But I‘m a sucker once I start a series. Already into The Silkworm!

Ericalambbrown I really liked the books and didn‘t particularly like the TV adaptations, but I thought the leads were fantastically cast. I felt like the writing is where the series fell down. 4w

Definitely a pick, well written. I loved the characters Strike and Robin. Story is slow initially but then picks up pace and of course one keeps wondering who possibly could be the culprit. it's interesting.

Just finished this on audiobook. I went out of order and read the 4th book, ‘Lethal White‘, first a couple months ago—and it was fantastic. I hesitated between saying Pick or So-So for this one. The mystery was interesting, and had a satisfying conclusion, but there were more than a few parts that were pretty dull and could have been excised. But it seems the series gets better, so I‘ll probably check the next one sometime.

I picked this up out of sheer curiosity secure in the knowledge that if I hated it I could send it to my sister (the mystery reader in my family). This book was not really what I expected but I still had a hard time putting it down for it some reason. Cormoran and Robin were intriguing and I really did need to find out whodunnit. I think I‘d even be interested in reading the next book in the series. I could turn into a mystery reader after all.

Owlizabeth I‘m not super into mysteries, but I love Cormoran and Robin so much! 2mo
Liatrek It‘s a really good series overall. I‘ve read all the books and enjoyed all of em except the last one 2mo

Strike has his office in Denmark Street. The Sex Pistols are somehow connected to Denmark St, but I can't remember whether they lived there, or had a studio there.

My first thought for #disabilityreads was the Cormoran Strike series. He lost part of his leg in the military, and that's a big part of his characterization. My next thought is there should be more books about people who are differently abled because I haven't read many. #literaryluck @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @vkois88

Greetings from the snowy north - Montréal is expecting 6” tomorrow so we got miles of walking tourism in today (and several coffee stops to warm up)!! I did not read at this adorable café, but I started this book last night and I‘m enjoying it so far - it is SO not Harry Potter, which I expected but was still surprised by, you know?

This book kept me on the edge of my seat and had me guessing all the way through! Just when I thought I knew who the killer was, another twist was thrown into the mix!

I HIGHLY recommend this book!!!

I love this book so much. I forgot that Comoran is a little much for me in this first one, but will strengthen the way Robin has changed him as I do my reread.
The prose is this book is so carefully chosen, the description of setting marvelously used to strengthen the mystery. 5 out of 5 on GR.

As stated from various reviews from other people, it does begin slowly and only captured my attention 3/4ths of the way through the book but I still want to see what happens in the next installment. This was a good read and kept me guessing about the identity of the killer until the very end. Four out of five stars. 🌟🌟🌟🌟

Hey, Littens! How has everyone been? I'm back (again) from a few months hiatus. My depression and anxiety was very severe, and I needed a lot of time to heal. It's manageable right now.

In other news, this is my third book of the month I'm starting! I picked up Silkworm but thought best to start with this, the first detective novel for Cormoran Strike ;)

Has anyone read it? Thoughts / opinions? And Happy Sunday as well 😊

Libby1 ❤️❤️❤️ (((Big Hugs))) I understand. I‘m glad you‘re back. I like this series. I think the third one is the best so far, but haven‘t read Lethal White yet. 4mo
BooksAtNight Sorry to hear that things were rough but I‘m glad you feel better, enough to come back! The plot is slow (it‘s more character driven than anything) and Strike got on my nerves a lot but I ended up really enjoying it by the end since the characters felt really fleshed out. 4mo
SamanthaMarie Glad you are back! Depression and anxiety are a true bitch (sorry for the swear.) Glad you have been able to read! I want to read this sometime. When my super bad panic disorder developed I started to read this book and when the person dies from an aneurysm at the very beginning it freaked me out terribly so I never got past that page. 4mo

akckitty @Libby1 and @BooksAtNight this one is ok so far for me! But @BooksAtNight I can see how you find him annoying at times. He's kind of a bit extra personality. @Libby1 I'm excited to continue through the series. 4mo
CaramelLunacy I really enjoy this series (though the silkworm was weakest in my opinion), though I get how Strike isn't everyone's cup of tea! 4mo
erzascarletbookgasm Glad things are much better and manageable, good to have you back. 💗 I‘ve read the first three in this series, liked them a lot...some find this slow in the earlier parts, I find it ok. I didn‘t like the second (Silkworm) and the third is my favourite! 4mo
UwannaPublishme Glad you‘re back and so happy you‘re on a healing path. Big hugs to you. 🤗❤️ 4mo
akckitty @CaramelLunacy I can also understand that. So far from what I can tell, overall consensus is that Silkworm was the least favorite. But that happens so I'll hold on through the series since I like the core of it so far 😊 4mo

Former MP turned PI Cormoran Strike is asked to look into a suspicious suicide to determine if it was really murder. I loved the HP series and enjoyed A Casual Vacancy, so I know what JK Rowling can do, so I was frankly disappointed with this book. It‘s clunky and slow and the reveals are know by the character but hidden from the reader, which drives me crazy. I already have the next two books and will try them, but this was a bummer.

jpellet I felt the same way! The second book has been sitting on my shelf. I have little motivation to read it. 4mo
