Cuckoo's Calling
Cuckoo's Calling | Robert Galbraith
A brilliant debut mystery in a classic vein: Detective Cormoran Strike investigates a supermodel's suicide. After losing his leg to a land mine in Afghanistan, Cormoran Strike is barely scraping by as a private investigator. Strike is down to one client, and creditors are calling. He has also just broken up with his longtime girlfriend and is living in his office. Then John Bristow walks through his door with an amazing story: His sister, thelegendary supermodel Lula Landry, known to her friends as the Cuckoo, famously fell to her death a few months earlier. The police ruled it a suicide, but John refuses to believe that. The case plunges Strike into the world of multimillionaire beauties, rock-star boyfriends, and desperate designers, and it introduces him to every variety of pleasure, enticement, seduction, and delusion known to man. You may think you know detectives, but you've never met one quite like Strike. You may think you know about the wealthy and famous, but you've never seen them under an investigation like this. Introducing Cormoran Strike, this is the acclaimed first crime novel by J.K. Rowling, writing under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith.

This was good. There were parts that lost my interest just a little bit. I think sometimes the “hard-boiled” (darker, grittier) mysteries don‘t always keep my interest as much as other mysteries (maybe not always). This may have been one of those. Overall, though, I still thought it was good. I am planning to try the next in the series, so I‘ll continue for now.

I definitely enjoyed this detective style mystery novel. I really liked the characters, especially Cormoran Strike. I found that Strike had a lot of depth and I liked the chemistry with the other characters in the book. I found it to be a little bit wordy at times and I think it could have been cut down some, but I liked it overall. I suspected the ending to be what it was, but wasn‘t positive until it all came together.

This was, without a doubt, the worst book I‘ve read in decades. I was hoping I could give this 2 stars had the ending been spectacular but his book was a bore throughout. What did I just read? Didn‘t bail on it for 2 reasons: the kiddo chose it from my unread shelf for me to read and... the brilliance of JKR. She‘s brilliant but this book was brutal, sorry :( I only apologize because it pains me to say it. Hard pass on the rest in this series.

saresmoore I didn‘t enjoy this one, waited several years, then tried the second in the series and made it about ten pages before I bailed. Harry Potter is where her genius lies, I think. Have you read 1mo
BookieBiker @saresmoore I agree wholeheartedly re Harry Potter. I have The Casual Vacancy on my bookshelf unread. A friend told me yesterday it was not very good either. I think I‘ll take a wide break before thinking about reading it. Did you like it? 1mo

I‘m definitely on a JK Rowling kick right now. Just listened to A Casual Vacancy on audio book and it was mediocre. I‘m currently reading the Harry Potter Series out loud to my baby in the womb. Now I‘m listening to The Cuckoo‘s Calling which is the first book in JK‘s mystery series written under her pen name Robert Galbraith. I am actually enjoying this book and the mystery and the characters she‘s created. Have you read this series?

Leilani Ok I tried to add a photo and for some reason it wouldn‘t let me. Help! 3mo

Leilani @Kimberlone cool! Looking forward to it! 3mo
Coleen Sorry, I didn‘t mean 2nd series....I meant the rest of this one. I also watched the TV adaptations. Good, but not as good as the books (of course). There‘s so much left out of the film versions. 3mo
Leilani Aw yes of course! Hmm I should check out the British series! Thanks 3mo
kgriffith Yeah, it‘s just that you have to pass through the editing screen even if you don‘t actually do anything to the image 😊 I enjoyed this one, the second was okay, and the third was probably the last I‘ll read/listen to; they‘re longer than they need to be, and violence against women as plot device is something I try to avoid. 3mo

⭐️⭐️⭐️ Oy, the writing was super tedious at times. Way too many mundane descriptions that almost read like stage directions. I kept thinking “just get on with it already,” and considered bailing, but because I liked Strike immediately, I kept on. In the end, it was solidly entertaining, but could‘ve been amazing if 100 pages shorter. Not that JK Rowling is worried about my nitpickiness. Starting The Silkworm on audio next.

cathipink I've listened to the series and have felt the same way - my kingdom for an editor 😉 3mo
cathysaid You could have been describing Lethal White! It's a chunkster that could be 300 pages shorter! Yet I still enjoy this series and the main characters. Just gotta skim occasionally, I guess. 😏 3mo
MicheleinPhilly I‘ve been sort of underwhelmed by the first 2 books in this series. And the porn star like names in this one had me consistently 🙄. I‘m in no hurry to read the other 2. 3mo

britt_brooke @MicheleinPhilly The names are really bad. 😆 3mo
britt_brooke @cathipink @cathysaid She seems hell bent on describing every furniture or body position. I‘m listening to The Silkworm now and have found it more tolerable on audio. 🤣 I like the characters and story, though. It‘s weird. Editing down would‘ve made these so much better. 3mo
britt_brooke @saresmoore Here‘s my review of the first one. I have a feeling you felt similarly? 3mo
saresmoore Yep, I‘d say you hit the nail on the head! I think I‘ll start the next one soon. 2mo

I was initially very engaged by this book, by the back and forth between Robin and Cormoran and their individual characters. But as it progressed, I found it to be rather tedious and too long. Much of this is probably my general blasé toward mysteries, but I think the other part of it was too much interviewing of witnesses - too much telling.

Ruthiella I haven‘t read this series (yet?) but I wonder if her publisher is reluctant to edit her (goose = golden egg). which leads to sprawl in her books.🤔 3mo
Bklover @Ruthiella I think you may have something there! 3mo

I‘m an outlier but I thought this was disappointing. There‘s probably a good cozy crime in here, with some serious editing. It‘s too long, too rambling, I had the solution figured early doors and the author is clearly still annoyed about all those complaints about lack of diversity in Harry Potter and is determined to make sure you know that she can do diversity.

SherlockAndEarlGrey The 2nd is better and the 3rd blew me away. I say give them a shot. 4mo
Verity @SherlockAndEarlGrey I do already have the second one on the pending shelf... 4mo
britt_brooke Love and appreciate your honesty! 3mo
Verity @britt_brooke thanks! It‘s strange because so many people are so keen on this series. And obviously a bit hard to say because: JKR. I‘m going to read the second one and see if that‘s better. 3mo

Great story of a private detective trying to solve the apparent suicide of a model on behalf of the model's adoptive brother. His assistant, Robin, is an aspiring detective and their relationship is interesting, complicated by Robin's fiancee Matthew, who sounds a bit dull. Can't get a clear picture of what Strike (detective) looks like - is he a bit fat and brutish, or is he a bit sexy? Hard to tell - maybe that says more about my preferences!

Finally started this series. Read the first book, then had to immediately watch the TV adaptation. (The book was better.)
I liked the book, but didn‘t love it. Thought there was almost too much excessive detail. Started kind of slow, but the characters grew on me. Initially reminded me a lot of Kate Atkinson‘s Jackson Brodie series, though not as quirky.
But I‘m a sucker once I start a series. Already into The Silkworm!

Ericalambbrown I really liked the books and didn‘t particularly like the TV adaptations, but I thought the leads were fantastically cast. I felt like the writing is where the series fell down. 6mo

Just finished this on audiobook. I went out of order and read the 4th book, ‘Lethal White‘, first a couple months ago—and it was fantastic. I hesitated between saying Pick or So-So for this one. The mystery was interesting, and had a satisfying conclusion, but there were more than a few parts that were pretty dull and could have been excised. But it seems the series gets better, so I‘ll probably check the next one sometime.

I picked this up out of sheer curiosity secure in the knowledge that if I hated it I could send it to my sister (the mystery reader in my family). This book was not really what I expected but I still had a hard time putting it down for it some reason. Cormoran and Robin were intriguing and I really did need to find out whodunnit. I think I‘d even be interested in reading the next book in the series. I could turn into a mystery reader after all.

Hey, Littens! How has everyone been? I'm back (again) from a few months hiatus. My depression and anxiety was very severe, and I needed a lot of time to heal. It's manageable right now.

In other news, this is my third book of the month I'm starting! I picked up Silkworm but thought best to start with this, the first detective novel for Cormoran Strike ;)

Has anyone read it? Thoughts / opinions? And Happy Sunday as well 😊

BooksAtNight Sorry to hear that things were rough but I‘m glad you feel better, enough to come back! The plot is slow (it‘s more character driven than anything) and Strike got on my nerves a lot but I ended up really enjoying it by the end since the characters felt really fleshed out. 9mo

Old fashioned campy whodunit. Interested to see what book two brings.

Pickpick

I finished my first #NewYearWhoDis pick, and I thoroughly enjoyed it! Thanks @CareBear for including it on your list. I do love a mystery that involves pure, old fashioned detecting. It was so readable, right from the beginning. I probably would have never picked it up on my own, just due to the hype it got previously. I can't wait to continue the series!
@monalyisha

CareBear I‘m so glad you liked it! Also, props to @monalyisha for her skill in matching people. 9mo
monalyisha Thanks! I‘m not so shabby at that, I think. 🤗 9mo

Mehso-so

Former MP turned PI Cormoran Strike is asked to look into a suspicious suicide to determine if it was really murder. I loved the HP series and enjoyed A Casual Vacancy, so I know what JK Rowling can do, so I was frankly disappointed with this book. It‘s clunky and slow and the reveals are know by the character but hidden from the reader, which drives me crazy. I already have the next two books and will try them, but this was a bummer.

jpellet I felt the same way! The second book has been sitting on my shelf. I have little motivation to read it. 9mo
vivastory The series gets better with each one 9mo
Hooked_on_books @vivastory That‘s really good to hear. I have the next 2 and was annoyed with myself for getting those before reading the first one. 9mo
