Who recommends this and why? I‘ve heard good things about it but I‘m not sure if I want to read it.

RamsFan1963 I have the whole trilogy, but all 4 books (the last one is in two parts) are such chunksters, I haven't gotten up the will to plunge in. I've only heard good things about them, maybe they will be my next big series read. 4y
Branwen I recommend it highly! 😀📚💕 It's old school epic fantasy, and even though it's super long, reading it felt very comforting to me. Tad Williams' writing is really good too! I hope that helps! 4y
MrT I‘m up to book 3. It‘s taken me 28 years to get round to reading them (been on my TBR and shelves that long) and now I‘m reading one part a year. I‘ll make book 3 one of my autumn/winter reads, I‘ve also read his Otherland and Shadowmarch series. Great epic fantasy writer. 4y
EddieF Have also read them but, without wanting to spoil it, I find the atmosphere building up to the climax excellent, but the actual events right at the end of the book left me a tad (pun unintended!) disappointed, felt it could have been more. 3y

Let‘s Discuss:
Gandalf > Dumbledore
What do you think?

Trashcanman Whatever goes up must come down 4y
audraelizabeth I find them to be very different and judge them seperately. However, if it wasnt for tolkien's writing wed probably have never had rowling's work. I find gandalf to be far more fun than dumbledore. 4y
jen_the_scribe Definitely Gandalf. Dumbledore sadly died, but Gandalf came back as Gandalf the White. And Gandalf had a more light hearted personality, in my opinion. 4y
See All 17 Comments
RobStark92 @Trashcanman I‘m sorry I‘m not quite sure I got the reference there, would you mind elaborating for me? 😂😂😂 4y
RobStark92 @audraelizabeth yeah you have to judge them differently, one of them is a Angel/semi God something right now either, and the other one is a human wizard. Both with very different personalities. Dumbledore was very fun in his own way, and he made a lot of pointless mistakes, so I like him that he‘s more on a human level. But Gandalf takes the cake for me. He‘s so fun in his dynamic with Pippin 😂😂 4y
RobStark92 @jen_the_scribe Dumbledore had his lighthearted moments, but Gandalf was always willing to trust his friends and followers. I feel a lot of what happened in the series, especially a lot of the sad things, could have been avoided if Dumbledore was more willing to trust. And yeah, if you come back from the dead that‘s automatic bonus points 😂 4y
Texreader Gandalf! 4y
audraelizabeth I agree 4y
Jovy Gandalf all the way! 4y
CaliforniaCay Gandalf has my vote! I love Dumbledore and feel like he was one of the best characters in the HP books, but I like that we got to see more action from Gandalf. We got to read about some of the things Dumbledore did back in his day sure, but we didn't get to see him do as much as we got to see Gandalf do. 4y
Reggie Sometimes when there are two flowers, they don‘t compete with each other, they just bloom. 4y
RobStark92 @Reggie award goes to you for smartest answer of the day !! You‘re right, honestly, both of them are great in their own way. I really liked the proverb, I‘m going to store it for later use . 4y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm Gandalf all the way. I truly dislike Dumbledore, honestly. 😅 He‘s kooky and fun on the surface, but I always felt like he was playing at puppet master rather than being an open and honest leader. 4y
TheBookAddict @Reggie I love that answer. 😆 @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm I haven‘t read The Lord of The Rings series, so I don‘t know how I feel about Gandalf, but I feel the same way as you about Dumbledore. To me it always seemed like he was never honest. I don‘t know, I don‘t trust him. 4y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @TheBookAddict Glad I‘m not the only one! 😅👍 4y
Naltez @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm totally!! Dumbledore spends all his time avoiding telling Harry what is going to happen. Every book could be so much easier if he was just honest 4y

Death Masks | Jim Butcher

Finished The Well of Ascension last night and I loved it almost every bit as much as The Final Empire!!
I realized though July is almost over and I just wanted to get one another book in before July is over. So it‘s back to Dresden Files :)

AllisonM89 Can't wait to hear your thoughts on the ending of the trilogy! 😁 4y
RobStark92 @AllisonM89 absolutely! I‘m going straight back to it after this :) I just wanted to get one extra book in for July and there was no way I was gonna finish it in two days :) 4y
AllisonM89 @RobStark92 there's some pretty epic stuff with my favorite character. But that's all i can say (and it's safe to say, because you don't know who my favorite is 😂) 4y
pareads I'm planning on reading the last 2 in August. I'm glad you liked Well of Ascension as much as The Final Empire. I always worry book#2 won't be as good as book#1! 4y
RobStark92 @pareads Book one and two are very different and have a different feel two them, but both are excellent for different reasons. My understanding is that what happens at the end of book two is a total game changer :) so I‘m excited. If I stick with one series for too long though I get bored with it and can‘t stay focused, so I always read two books at the most, then switxh to something different. 4y

I tried orange spiced black tea this morning and it was delicious 😋
My schedule changed as of next week I‘ll be working 11-7 instead of 5:30-3. So I‘m wondering if I should just stay in the habit of getting up super early and going to be early or if my sleeping pattern should change according to my schedule.
Also I‘m reading The Well of Ascension and it‘s good...but things just ain‘t the same 😰 if you know you know. Wishing all a blessed day!!

wanderinglynn Ooh, I love orange spice black tea. 😋👍🏻 4y
RobStark92 @wanderinglynn me too I‘ve never even tried it before but I saw it at HEB and figured it would be good. Every time I go I pick up a different box of tea so it never gets dull. I probably have tea for months and months, but this one really hit the spot !! 4y
AllisonM89 Books 2 and 3 are good (i do absolutely love some things about the ending of three), but nothing compares to 1. They just have a very different feel to them 4y

RobStark92 @heikemarie yeah she‘s a sweetie when I first got her she was very timid not like her sister. It took a while for her to warm up to me, but now she comes up and gives me random nibbles and kisses and stuff. 4y

Cortg That‘s dedication! I wake up earlier than needed (but not till 6:15) to drink my coffee and read before work. Mornings are my favorite reading time! 4y
Chrissyreadit Wow 4 am is dedication! I‘m trying to get in the habit of 7 with a goal of 6 and struggling! 4y
RobStark92 @Cortg well my alarm is at 3:40 and by the time I‘m showered shaved and dressed it‘s 4:30 which gives me a little bit over an hour to read before I head into work (unless I have a 5:30 shift then less than hour) it‘s a struggle but I have my tea and the cold shower gets me going. 4y
See All 7 Comments
RobStark92 @Chrissyreadit mornings is one of the times of day where I can concentrate and where my ADHD isn‘t quite as intense so it‘s a good way for me to get 50 pages or so in. It also just motivates me to wake up and puts me in a positive mood for the day. 4y
Chrissyreadit What time do you go to sleep? I agree that mornings are the best for focus! 4y
RobStark92 @Chrissyreadit around 9-10, it depends really cause sometimes I have trouble falling asleep. I try for a solid 6 hours, sometimes 5 or 7. 4y
Chrissyreadit Nice!!! I‘m trying for 10 but often it‘s later. 4y

ALSO: Do I go straight to book two The Well of Ascension or take a break and go to The Dresden Files for a book or two?

Peace book nerds

AllisonM89 I mean, book one leaves off in a place that you could definitely take a break. Personally, id like you to read straight through and see the ending because of what happens with one of my favorite characters 😂 4y
RobStark92 Are usually take a break between one book to the next, just because sometimes it‘s hard for me to focus on the same thing for long periods of time. But the Siri seems like I might be able to get through at least the first two maybe even the third. Wilsee 4y
RainyDayReading I read a different book after I finished the first Mistborn. Mostly because I wanted to extend my time in the world. But....I still haven‘t gotten back to it yet 🙈 I probably should. If it‘s hard for you to focus on the same thing for long periods then I would say take a break. 4y

Mistborn: The Final Empire | Brandon Sanderson

I‘m halfway through the final empire, and it‘s everything I thought it would be. Does it only get better after the first book? For those who have read the trilogy in entirety?

AllisonM89 Books two and three have a very different feel to them, but after still excellent 4y
AllisonM89 The second trilogy is good, but there's some differing opinions. Some people prefer it, some don't. Personally, the first Mistborn book will always be my favorite. But it's all worth reading 4y
AllisonM89 Read the novella after you've finished all the mistborn books. So many spoilers 4y
See All 9 Comments
AllisonM89 Have you read Sanderson before? 4y
RobStark92 @AllisonM89 I have not read Sanderson before, this is my introduction to him, I wanted to get into him but right now with all the other series I‘m reading I didn‘t have time to start like the Stormlight archive‘s or something like that, but it‘s good to know thank you for letting me know your opinion on it. And I‘ll be sure to push the novella all the way to the back 4y
AllisonM89 @RobStark92 So a lot of people say that Stormlight is his best work. It IS brilliant, but i will tell you that the first 500 pages of book one are really slow going. The payoff is huge and totally worth it, but don't be surprised by that 4y
AllisonM89 @RobStark92 and i would read Warbreaker before Stormlight. Eltantris was his first book and i think it's weaker, but still worthwhile 4y
AllisonM89 @RobStark92 and you know that all his cosmere books are set in the same universe and have some crazy overlapping story? Just watch what you read online. So many spoilers.... 4y
Jovy This is one of my favorite series! Sanderson creates a very unique world. I haven‘t started on Stormlight because I like the series completely out before I start. So it‘s going to be awhile 😅 4y

Why are sci-fi and fantasy stuck together in the same category at B&N and other bookstores and on the kindle app? And why do I love one and dislike the other so much? Does anyone else feel like these genres should be entirely distinct and separate from one another unless they are sci-fantasy books?

SpaceCowboyBooks I pretty much with you on this. But the reason they are shelved together at bookstores is because they are in large part written by the same authors. 4y
AllisonM89 Agreed 4y
SiriGuruDevSingh Absolutely agree! I love both, but they have nothing in common as far as mood goes (other than people love to snoot both as being somehow “unworthy”🙄) (edited) 4y
See All 11 Comments
RobStark92 @SiriGuruDevSingh I can‘t speak for sci-fi, but what the modern fantasy genre is currently doing and has done over the last 15 years will be studied more closely and in depth in a hundred years than anything classic literature has to offer, just my prediction. Anyone who says either genre is unworthy has very little or very poor experience in both genres. 4y
RobStark92 @SpaceCowboyBooks that‘s a pretty simple answer I didn‘t even think of. That makes sense honestly... 4y
jinxmoon Are they completely mixed together? Because in Germany they‘re next to each other but in different shelves or at least clearly separated from each other with a little sign... even if authors have books in both categories! 4y
MsMelissa That‘s not a problem up here. The bookstores I visit have the two genres separated in the store. I also have a Kobo and I can sort be fantasy or SCI-FI. I do have a similar issue with historical fiction when it comes to online booksellers - when I search historical fiction most of what comes up are historical romance novels 🙄 4y
RobStark92 @jinxmoon also I just assumed you spoke German since you said in Germany 😂 4y
jinxmoon Ja, ich kann deutsch ☺️ Das ist ja richtig blöd und nervig! Hier haben das selbst die kleinsten Buchläden eigentlich immer getrennt ? 4y
rjsthumbelina Actually, with the re-categorizations that have happened at B&Ns, the 2 still share a section but are separated from each other👍 4y

What is a good entry point for modern sci-fi? I‘ve read nothing, literally NOTHING, in the modern sci-fi genre!!

SiriGuruDevSingh Altered Carbon! SO good!❤️❤️❤️ 4y
RobStark92 @SiriGuruDevSingh modern or classic? Lol I can just google it but would you mind telling me why it‘s so good? :P just want your opinion on it 4y
OnlyYoo Is ready player one too basic an answer? Haha 4y
See All 17 Comments
RobStark92 @OnlyYoo no I actually really like the movie. I watched the movie and then later found out there was a book on it :( I wish I hadn‘t seen the movie cause I hate reading a story when I already know the ending. I actually have considered reading it 4y
SpaceCowboyBooks For a classic I recommend Stranger in a Strange Land by Heinlein and the Lathe of Heaven by Le Guin. 4y
OnlyYoo I watched the movie first too but the book is 100% different. Honestly now that I‘ve read the book I think the movie sucked 4y
RobStark92 @OnlyYoo see I never judge the movie based on the book because you‘re always going to be disappointed if you try to. I always remember that it‘s not a direct adaptation, it‘s someone‘s interpretation of a story putting their own art into it. I used to judge every movie by the book and walked out thinking the movie sucked. (except LOTR, LOTR movies are legit). I think I‘ll do a sci-fi month and put it on by TBR 4y
RobStark92 @SpaceCowboyBooks my dad is a huge classic sci-fi gut and when I asked him he said Stranger in a strange land and pretty much anything else by heinlein. Am I right in thinking it takes a more “comical” or lighthearted approach to the genre? 4y
SiriGuruDevSingh Modern. It‘s a trilogy, and it‘s awesome in that it‘s got everything—mystery, action, adventure, sex, mind-bending science—it‘s like Blade Runner on Crack, with multiple solar systems and a kick ass MC💞❤️ 4y
SpaceCowboyBooks That particular book is satirical and quite funny. 4y
RobStark92 @SpaceCowboyBooks a friend of mine said it‘s a bit like Discworld of sci-fi. I haven‘t had a good laugh in a while I might check it out 4y
MsMelissa HG Wells‘ The Time Machine is a classic that gets a lot of love. 4y
RobStark92 @Book_Fiend_Melissa when I was a kid I read one of those condensed versions of the book, you know the ones they put out for kids so that they can read the actual texts later on. I want to read War of the Worlds too 4y
MsMelissa I‘m actually more of a modern SCI-FI fan than the classics. The Martian is great, as are James S.A. Corey‘s Expanse novel series. While YA, I loved Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristof‘s Obsidio Files trilogy. 4y
Lucy_Anywhere I second The Martian and also recommend Old Mans War by John Scalzi - both are great character-driven sci-fi books 4y
BookmarkTavern The Left Hand of Darkness. The Left Hand of Darkness. Oh my god, The Left Hand of Darkness. Soooo good. 1969. Ursula K Le Guin. Classic sci fi. Amazing. Everybody should read it. 4y
dylanisreading Modern sci-fi: pretty much anything by Nancy Kress. Yesterday‘s Kin is my favorite by her. She does hard sci-fi really well, and I feel like she‘s not as well known as other authors. 4y

Finished it today, man this one just flew by! It keeps getting better and better loved the addition of the Summer and Winter fairies. Will post review soon!

Jovy The Dresden Files gets better and better in my opinion (I‘m up to book 9). Some take awhile to warm up to Harry, but if you‘re hooked early on I think it‘s safe to assume you‘ll be a fan! 4y
RobStark92 @Jovy Harry‘s my favorite protagonist I love him as a character his sarcasm and his humor but also his drive to do the right thing. I hate it when people say he‘s a chauvinistic pig, just because he notices certain features about women. Is it a bit excessive? Perhaps, but at the same time show me a sis gendered straight male who doesn‘t notice things about women. And that‘s definitely not reflective of his behavior towards them 4y

Beautiful and disgusting Grimdark gems of Necromancy and a truly vile main POV character, unfortunately weighed down by a very random and incohesive narration presentation and lackluster side characters. At times a very marvelous book, at other times came close to DNFing.

RobStark92 @TrishB middlebook syndrome was the phrase I was trying to remember lol 😂😂😂 I‘ll keep you posted like I said part three can redeem it all and part one was really good even :) 4y
TrishB It‘s a love or hate ending in part three 😁 4y
MsMelissa I‘m struggling with this one right now. I‘m about 100 pages in and really don‘t like it. I‘m considering bailing. @TrishB 4y
TrishB @Book_Fiend_Melissa aw that‘s a shame, but if you‘re not enjoying it. 4y
MsMelissa @TrishB I‘m going to read some more tonight and see how it goes. I found the first part really confusing with the going back and forth in time. If that stops, and the story stays on present timeline I might be alright. 4y
RobStark92 @Book_Fiend_Melissa I recommend sticking it out because it has some really incredible Grimdark gems scattered throughout and they are worth going the distance for. If you do DNF it definitely get a spoiler synopsis, cause there‘s some good stuff in it. If you shelf it though, I understand why 😇 4y
MsMelissa @RobStark92 @TrishB Alright, alright I‘ll keep going 😂 Besides, I already own the third book so it would be a shame if I stopped now. 4y
Lucy_Anywhere Finished this yesterday! I agree - it was quite uneven and there were some bits where the story got bogged down. But i liked seeing how Jorg matures and there were some bits that hit me in the feels. So overall a pick for me! 4y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm Awww, that‘s too bad. 😞 Hmm...might still check the book out, but probably only after I‘ve run out of other grimdark material choices. 😅 4y
Jovy Aww, sorry this was just a so-so for you! I personally did not feel the book was tedious to read. Let‘s see what we think of book 3. Also, Mistborn‘s another great series to tackle! 👍🏻 4y
Pumpkinandegg313 That is a shame... I found this book to be quite a laugh full of dark humour... But not everyone likes everything lol. Hope you find a great next book 😊 4y
RobStark92 @Pumpkinandegg313 it‘s not that I didn‘t like it, I liked it in general but INCREDIBLY disliked many parts of it, and the parts that I enjoyed were absolutely incredible. I‘m glad I stuck it out, no regrets here 4y
RobStark92 @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm it‘s worth your time just be prepared and pack a lunch for it 😂 I‘m still glad I read it don‘t get me wrong, some of it was quite brilliant to be honest!! 4y
RobStark92 @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm for Grimdark, have you read The Poppy zwar? 4y
RobStark92 @Lucy_Anywhere it came close to a pick for me because so much of it was BLOODY BRILLIANT, but it was very weighed down so it hit the middle. I‘ll still read the third. Also, I‘m interested in Jorg maturing. I‘m ready to see if we get a full blown corruption or redemption in book three!! 4y
RobStark92 @Jovy I‘ll keep you posted on book three, I‘m taking a break from this but I will definitely finish the series!! I‘m excited. Oh, and the prologue for Mistborn got me hooked. The first sentence will be an iconic one in 50 years when people study fantasy !‘ 4y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm I haven‘t. Is it high on your recommendation list? 4y
RobStark92 @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm yes it Chinese history based Grimdark it starts off rocky but gets WILD, the finale comes out in November I highly recommend it. The magic system involves substance abuse and the Chinese pantheon 4y

Harry Potter | JK Rowling

Let‘s discuss:
Harry Potter is not a 5 star series. Most people only think it is because of the nostalgia factor and having read it growing up alongside Harry, as children and teens we saw it as 5 stars. Harry Potter is only a favorite series for so many because they have yet to read a better series or simply remember how good it was growing up. Going back critically and examining it objectively, it ranges between 3-4/5 stars. Change my mind.

MsMelissa I won‘t change your mind, but I read the series as an adult (the first book wasn‘t published until I was already in my 20s), and love it. Is the writing the best I‘ve ever read? Absolutely not. But I loved the world, and the characters. There are very few books I‘ve read in my life that I will re-read. The Harry Potter series is one of them. 4y
Karkar I agree. Curious to see what others say. 4y
RobStark92 @Book_Fiend_Melissa I love it too I‘ve read it many times over and will do a reread this year or next. Objectively between plot holes, conveniences, contradictions, things being added by the author as she goes along and even years later after it‘s already firmly established, so on and so forth, each time I reread it I see more flaws and weaknesses in it. It is not a bad series at all, but I feel that marketingNostalgia helped drive it‘s success 4y
See All 27 Comments
MsMelissa While I‘m sure that helps, I don‘t always care that a book has plot holes or inconsistencies. What matters to me, as a reader, is how a book makes me feel. I don‘t give out five stars only to well-crafted books, I give them to books that speak to me in some way or that just plain make me happy. That‘s how I feel about Harry Potter. It‘s not perfect, but my experiences reading the series just plain make me happy. That makes it 5-star worthy to me. (edited) 4y
MsMelissa Oh, and I pay no attention to what Rowling says after the fact. It‘s better that way 😂 4y
RobStark92 @Book_Fiend_Melissa I see so you rate the book on a more subjective standard than objective. Which is totally fine !! What I might dislike about a certain book might be the reason others love it and vice versa. And I‘m not sure there is a review about any book that is entirely objective. If I rated the series in terms of the message behind it and speaking to readers I might give it 5 stars as well. 4y
MsMelissa Oh, and you might find this odd, but I‘m way less harsh on books that fall within the fantasy genre. I‘ve probably rated more fantasy books five stars than any other genre, probably because it‘s my escapist genre and I‘m only looking for entertainment. Historical fiction is my favourite genre, but I‘m super critical of it. Way more so than other stuff I read. 4y
MsMelissa @RobStark92 exactly! Don‘t get me wrong, if I love a book but it‘s badly written it‘s not getting five stars. But if I love a book and I‘m happy with the way it‘s written, even if it‘s not perfect, I could still give it five stars. 4y
RobStark92 @Book_Fiend_Melissa absolutely with the fantasy genre more liberties can be taken because (as the name suggests) anything can and will happen. If I read historical fiction one of my focus of judging it is how historical it actually is and was it something that could have actually happened. Different genres need to be reviewed differently. 4y
MsMelissa It is interesting to know how people decide what ratings to give books. I think, overall, I‘m pretty stingy with five-star ratings. Other people seem to give them out on everything they read (although I see much less of that on Litsy). I mean not every book is a good book. 4y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm I was a holdout for a long time with Harry Potter and didn‘t start reading the series until I was in High School. Granted that‘s not an “adult” point of view, but I wasn‘t sucked in as a kid. But it still sucked me in. I think I would agree with both points that if you look at it objectively, it‘s only maybe 4⭐️s at best, but the feeling it gave many readers/cultural phenomenon it triggered merit weight. I also ignore Rowling post-HPatDH. 😅🤣😂 4y
RobStark92 @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm Rowling reached the epitome of disrespect for fans, her series, and the genre after Hallows when she slapped her name on the cursed child and called it canon. I‘m not even to critical on the f. Beasts series, but cursed child is entirely unforgivable 4y
rwmg I loved the early HP books, the later more bloated ones not so much. And was very disappointed that the overall message was racism is evil. True, but I was expecting something bit more cosmic after all that worldbuilding. 4y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm I admit, I haven‘t been shown sufficient evidence of a good story to peak my interest in anything that followed the core series. 😅 4y
Reggie I was waiting tables in my 20‘s and these women on July 21,2007, who were my regulars asked me what I was gonna do later that day. I told them the literary 2nd coming of Christ was happening and I was gonna go get the last Harry Potter. An hour after they left, they came back with the book for me. I was a music major for a bit and our professor said if you love music maybe you won‘t love this class as we pick it apart. What I remember is the joy 4y
Reggie of reading about such a world. One time, Harry is at the Ministry of Magic and all the windows are showing hurricane weather because the custodial staff was on strike. Little details like that were great. The whole series is about love and self sacrifice. About being kind. Sometimes you really don‘t know what is going on with someone- when we see Neville at St.Mungoes hospital visiting his parents- and Snape and his whole revelation-😭. I 4y
Reggie just really liked them. This probably does nothing to convince you but reading those books are part of my happy reading memories. 4y
Reggie Also, there ‘s a lot about what can weigh on someone‘s mind. Like when Mrs. Weasley is cleaning that closet and, I forget what it‘s called but that creature that shows your deepest fears comes out and she keeps seeing different members of her family dead. There was a lot of ingenuity in here. 4y
Reggie That‘s it I swear, lol. 4y
RobStark92 @Reggie you‘re good reply away friend and feel free to blow this thread up that‘s why I posted it. I definitely agree that there are some truly marvelous gems of fantasy in the wizarding world, and Snape is perhaps the best written characters I‘ve read in YA in and one of the best in fantasy as a whole, both in concept and in execution, and that there are some really good characters such as Molly and her fight with the boggart BUT... 4y
RobStark92 @Reggie overall we follow one of the most least interesting and shallow characters in the wizarding world as our main and almost exclusive POV. Not to mention that the series is weighed down heavily with inconsistencies and plot conveniences to advance the narrative, and Voldemort, a wizard who is supposed to match Dumbledore in brilliance, is just incredibly stupid and shallow at times. There are some more issues I have but those should suffice.. 4y
RobStark92 @Reggie so in the end we have some very mediocre pebbles and rocks barely adequate to break a window mixed in with some truly marvelous gems of fantasy and character work, all set in a world that could have been soooo much more. there are 5 Star ingredients, but also 1 -3 star ingredients. But I like you waited eagerly for book 7, which was dedicated to us who stuck with harry until the end. I grew up with it and it will always be a part of me 4y
RobStark92 @rwmg I think there are more messages than racism is bad, love triumphs over evil (which isn‘t necessarily the case outside of a religious context which I won‘t discuss here 😂) death is nothing to be afraid of, the value of friendship and things like that. I feel the world could have been soooo much more than messages though. And I actually enjoyed the last books. It‘s not a series I hate, but not a five star series.. 4y
Bklover I‘m with @Reggie Harry Potter books to me are a place to visit full of magic and escape. I was in my 30‘s when they came out, and I was immediately captivated. I return to these books again and again and they always bring me joy. What better measure of a good book is there but joy? 4y
Sweetkokoro Im on the opposite spectrum with HP, I was 10 when the first book was published and I read it based on my friend loving them. I never made it past book 4, I never even finished book 4 haha. They were boring to me and it‘s a series I just have no intentions of ever trying to reread. I seen the movies I know the story, but the books just fell flat for me as a kid, I just didn‘t care for the world Or characters. 4y
Sweetkokoro The only thing that I did like was the school houses, I liked the breakdown of personality traits placing you in a particular house, it was fun and fascinating learning the differences between the 4. 4y
Reggie @Bklover yay! Hi five! 4y

After a long day of work it‘s nice to know you‘re coming home to a good book!!
Also: everybody responded so politely to my picture of my pet rat Dumplin I thought it was unfair that my other rat isn‘t getting as much attention 😠 so here‘s her sweet sister Noodle. She‘s the lazy one 😂

Catherine_Willoughby Cute pic but I have been a Cat person. Been giving a few of his cousins as "gifts" over the year. *sorry* ? 4y
RobStark92 @Catherine_Willoughby animals eat animals it‘s part of the circle of life I don‘t judge how the circle flows I‘m part of it myself but you keep that cat away from me and my pets 😂😂😂 4y

Catherine_Willoughby @RobStark92 lol. Don't worry don't current own a cat. My Dog loves all. I wish he would bark away the crows, pigeons and sparrows eating my grass seeds. He just like to watch in the shade! 4y
RobStark92 @Catherine_Willoughby I love dogs too we used to have pugs they were lazy as well though all they did was lay around and pant until they saw food 😂😂😂 4y
blank Love her! 🐭❤ 4y
MsMelissa Hey Noodle!! 👋🏻 4y
dylanisreading She‘s adorable! I‘m reading Summer Knight too. 4y
RobStark92 @Book_Fiend_Melissa Noodle says, “Squeak Peeps Squeak!” 4y
RobStark92 @Bianca I‘m about a hundred pages in I‘m excited a lot of people told me this is where the series takes off lol not sure what they mean by that for me it took off in the beginning. Are you enjoying it? 4y
shadowspeak17 Aww, so cute! ❤️ 4y
Lesanne I‘m glad they have a buddy! 4y
Darklunarose Noodle is adorable! We have 6 rattie girls and they really make amazing companions. 4y
AmyG I love her name. 💕 4y
RainyDayReading Noodle and Dumplin 🤣 I love their names! 4y
Seekingtardis I love noodle!! Rats are such loving cuddlers!! 4y
RobStark92 @shadowspeak17 she sure is, she‘s a lazy one though!! 4y
RobStark92 @Darklunarose I only have two they are a handful enough as it is!! I can barely keep these two in line and they don‘t listen to a darn thing I say 😂 4y
RobStark92 @Seekingtardis she loves you back 😇😇 4y
RobStark92 @RainyDayReading yeah when I got them I was trying to figure out what to name them and that night I had dumplings for dinner and the night before I had noodles so I guess that‘s how it came about 😂😂😂 4y
RainyDayReading @RobStark92 That is an awesome way to name them 🤣 4y
MynameisSnow Awwww I used to have dumbo eared rats and they were so sweet and intelligent!! Pixie was Grey hooded, Beans was Brown, Peanut was Albino, and Dixie was Brown and White. We had an enormous floor to ceiling cage for them, and we used to like setting up obstacle courses for them to figure out. Soooo smart! (edited) 4y
Darklunarose @RobStark92 listening isn‘t a strong point that for sure! The girls were rescues. We ended up taking mama too as they didn‘t think she would get a home as she draws blood...she doesn‘t anymore and is a darling. But listening? Not a chance! 4y

MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm I LOVE the positivity here! I‘ve essentially stopped using FB because I just can‘t take it anymore and I‘m so grateful there‘s a social media outlet I can still come to and connect with the world. Looking forward to your video! 👍 4y
RobStark92 @Lucy_Anywhere I have not. I‘m open to it though, I think when I finish the broken empire trilogy I might read book of the ancestor sometime down the road. For me it just depends on how this trilogy ends. Because I have incredibly mixed feelings about the second book. 4y

sharread So cute 💚💛 4y
RobStark92 @sharread she sure is thanks 😊 4y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @RobStark92 I bet! 😅 I used to volunteer at a small animal shelter and we always had to be extra careful to not leave anything within reach of their cage (fleece blankets, trash bags, etc.) because no sooner would we look away then they‘d have it pulled halfway into the cage and shredded to bits. 😂🤣😂 4y
RobStark92 @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm you should see what they did to some of my books😂😂 it doesn‘t bother me that much cause books are meant to be read and acquire wear and tear, but now I only buy ebooks 😂😂😂 4y
AmyG Too cute ❤️ 4y
RobStark92 @AmyG she‘s gonna be all arrogant when I get home from work and show her all these comments lol I‘m not gonna be able to tell her nothing !!! 4y
AmyG Ha! All the cute animals get ALL the attention. 4y
RobStark92 @AmyG yeah they get plenty of it unless I‘m at work or in the living room they are out of their cage either running around tearing from stuff up, nibbling on me while I‘m trying to read, or napping somewhere under my blankets 😇 4y
MsMelissa She‘s cute! I had a pet rat when I was a kid. Her name was Pinkie and she was awesome - very social and loved to just hang out 😊 4y
RobStark92 @Book_Fiend_Melissa My girls are named noodle and dumplin :). They are very social and smart and they love to eat 4y

AutumnRLS Can't wait for the new Dresden stuff. It's getting really good reviews from the people who have gotten to see it. I'm reading Brief Cases now. Can't wait until my preorder arrives on Tuesday! 4y
RobStark92 @AutumnRLS I‘m not that far in. I didn‘t get into Dresden files until June. I wanna get caught up but I never read more than 2 books of any series in a row, my ADHD kicks in then 😂!! All I can say is everybody who told me to skip the first few books and dive in to “where it gets good” was WRONG WRONG WRONG!! 4y
RobStark92 @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm when I named them Dumplin was the chunky one and noodle was the skinny one, but now Dumplin is the skinny one and noodle is the chunky one but I haven‘t change their names. I‘m not sure they would know the difference either way though 😂😂😂 4y

Pickpick

A delightfully disgusting tale of an anti Robin Hood, his not so merry men, as they pillage, plunder, and murder their way to fame.
Jorg is out for revenge against the man who murdered his mother and brother. A true psychopath, we see how his experiences as a child shaped him to be the scoundrel he is today Necromancers and ghosts too!
Points off for lack of direction and plot armor. 15/20! See my YouTube video. https://youtu.be/FXSIoQp2zj0

MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm Appreciate the notification tag! As usual, I left my comment over on YouTube so you‘re more likely to be noticed by their ridiculous algorithm. 😅 4y
RobStark92 @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm I don‘t no nuthin bout their algorithms lol but I certainly appreciate the feedback and the comment :) 4y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @RobStark92 Every like and comment counts towards whether you‘re considered relevant enough to recommend. People can like your videos all day, but if they‘re not commenting on YouTube, you‘re missing out on “points” basically. It also matters whether people watch your videos to the end or not. There‘s all sorts of graphs in the analytics tab to tell you whether people are watching your full vid or are cutting out part way. 😊👍 4y
MsMelissa Nicely done! The way you describe the protagonist makes me question how I could actually liked this book 😂 4y
RobStark92 @Book_Fiend_Melissa I mean you don‘t have to necessarily “like” Jorg to enjoy the book 😂😂, I certainly wouldn‘t want to be friends with him! I feel though that in terms of accomplishing his objective Mr. Lawrence pulled it off very well. There‘s plenty of POV characters who are despicable I think he just takes it one step further 4y
RobStark92 @Book_Fiend_Melissa Also thank you so much for watching and giving me your feedback. Also I do not disagree with you at all this guy is totally disgusting! I could see how that would be offputting for a lot of people 4y
MsMelissa Thankfully I don‘t have to like characters to enjoy a book. @TrishB had warned me about Jorg, so I knew going in he was no Prince Charming. 4y
TrishB Not had chance to watch yet and sitting in bed now so prob. tomorrow. Jorg is definitely the best anti hero I‘ve ever read. @Book_Fiend_Melissa has anyone got to the end of the trilogy yet? No spoilers, but it‘s one of the best endings to a fantasy series. And , while we‘re here....Mark is a great author to follow on fb and regularly interacts with readers. 4y
RobStark92 @TrishB OK that‘s fine ha ha I just tagged you because we have been talking about it throughout my reading experience. And I‘m on book 2 now, and honestly it‘s kind of depths, but I think it‘ll pick up at least once I can tell where all this is heading to. And I‘ve heard mixed things about the ending, but if what you say is true I definitely have something to look forward to!! 4y
Jovy Loved your review! Your take on Jorg is spot on. The intro with the music was a nice touch 👍🏻 4y
Jovy @TrishB I am on the last book and am slowing it down because I don‘t want it to end! Your comment is making me want to finish it NOW. 😂 4y
TrishB @Jovy you may disagree! You‘ll either love or hate it, but I find that‘s usually the way it is with fantasy series. 4y
Jovy @Trishb That is true. We shall see!!🤞🏻 4y

Does anyone I‘m following or anyone of my followers also have ADD or ADHD and would like to share some tips or discuss your struggle with being a book lover but also not being able to sit still and read for long periods of time?
I‘ve struggled with this since I was child, and I‘m not ashamed of it or uncomfortable with it. But I‘d love to talk about it with others!
#Awareness

Addison_Reads I think this is an excellent idea. My nephew struggles with this now at 15, so I'm interested to see some techniques others use. He likes to switch to a graphic novel when he's having a hard time focusing on a bigger book. He says the graphics help him and then when he goes back to the book he says it's easier to concentrate. 4y
SiameseCatsRead I medicate. But I also find that switching back and forth between a few books and print and audio helps. Also, setting a timer. 20 minutes reading. 4y
RobStark92 @Addison_Reads For me graphic novels are the same way as regular books. It‘s hard for me to stay concentrated on them as well, there‘s always something in the background grabbing my attention and trying to get me to look away from the book. This is funny, because it when I was a kid my teacher would actually hand me a book to keep me from distracting class, because she understood what was going on and knew it was not my fault 4y
RobStark92 @kelly_anne me and my doctor both came to the decision that the usual pharmaceutical ADHD medicine might not be the best option for me, so I try more natural things such as tea, CBD, essential oils and things like that. That being said it‘s still a chemical thing. But that was a decision me and my doctor made. There‘s nothing wrong with medication. Maybe I should try reading two or three different books. I usually stick with one. 4y
RobStark92 @Addison_Reads I found that dimming the lights and having music with headphones really helps weed out any other unwanted distractions 4y

Do any of my new Litsy friends have a Booktube / YouTube channel and want to engage in a free exchange of ideas, basically I‘m trying to steal your ideas 😂 no I‘m playing but but for real I just started one and really am looking for some advice on how to edit, gain subscribers, etc. etc.
Thanks friends 😇😇😇

RobStark92 @Literary_Siren tell her I‘ll share her videos if she shares mine 😂😂😂 not but for real I‘d love to chat and find out how to get more involved in booktube :) 4y

RainyDayReading I used to, but my computer only has the absolute basic editing software so I gave up on making videos after a year or so 😅 there‘s lots of great ‘intro to booktube‘ videos floating around if you do a general search. Readathons are a great way to get more involved. Have fun with your channel! 4y
RobStark92 @RainyDayReading I do everything from my iPhone with iMovie lol I‘m going to wait until I actually have a following to buy editing software :) but I‘ll look into the intro videos for sure !! Thanks for the info, and I love readathons :) 4y
abookishbutterfly @wanderinglynn Thank you! I actually have been very inactive there. I‘m not sure it is the right platform for me. I‘m enjoying just doing Bookstagram and blog type posts for my Facebook page a lot more. 4y
wanderinglynn @Butterflyamore but your videos are really good. So maybe y‘all can exchange tips and tricks. 4y

Prince of Thorns | Mark Lawrence

I‘m not gonna lie this Jorg guy kinda nasty lol 😂 I think I‘m gonna enjoy this

BehindthePages Jorg is one of my all time favorite characters 😅 4y
RobStark92 @BehindthePages I‘m only a hundred pages in, he seems legit though 😂 seems like he has some minor personality issues but don‘t we all 😂 4y
MsMelissa He‘s awful! But his story was still compelling. 4y
See All 10 Comments
RobStark92 @Book_Fiend_Melissa oh come now sure he‘s a bit crude but I‘m sure deep down he has some redeeming qualities 4y
MsMelissa Ha ha! Nope, I don‘t think he does. This reminds me that I need to read book two of this trilogy. I‘ll see if he‘s still as bad. 4y
RobStark92 @Book_Fiend_Melissa I‘ll be doing a review of the whole series one at a time I‘ll keep you posted :) they seem like quick reads I might have part one finished today 😇😁 4y
phantomx It's been so long since I've read Prince of Thorns, and Jorg is quite *cough cough* a character. I definitely have to finish this trilogy before the end of this summer. 4y
Lesanne One of the most interesting characters I‘ve ever read. 4y
RobStark92 @Lesanne seems like a very nice chap indeed 😂 haha really I‘m impressed, I‘m already halfway in it‘s a quick read. I‘m gonna like this one! 4y
RobStark92 @phantomx yeah he‘s quite despicable I‘m really interested if he‘s gonna get a evil dictator h*tler like arc like I have NO clue where this is going and I love it 4y

Last Argument of Kings - But Not My Last First Law Video https://youtu.be/0ofmHZjBDzE

Lucy_Anywhere This is a great trilogy! His Shattered Sea trilogy is also well worth a read if you haven‘t read it yet 4y
RobStark92 @Lucy_Anywhere I‘ve heard really good things about shattered sea, I don‘t normally read YA though :( but I may take a look at it when I get caught up with all the first law books :) 4y

Pickpick

Finished this one yesterday. Very solid, consistent wrap up to the series. Not too many surprises here, which means the story was well thought out and planned.
Character work is excellent. Personal favorites are Logen and Glokta!!
Writing style, not my favorite. Very simplistic, straight to the point prose. I like prose to be flowery and lyrical.
Overall 17/20. My YouTube video: https://youtu.be/0ofmHZjBDzE

Twainy Have you or will you read the First Law World & The Age Of Madness trilogies? 🖤 4y
RobStark92 @Twainy I have not but I certainly will 😍😇 I have A Little Hatred on my kindle but tell me, are the standalones a MUST before beginning age of madness? I plan on reading the stand alone novels but I already have a little hatred on my kindle 4y
Twainy I thought he wrote in trilogies 😆 all set in the First Law world. You could skip the trilogy & short stories between The First Law & Age of Madness “trilogies”. You won‘t miss that much and you‘ll see some characters from the first 3 books are still around. 4y
See All 7 Comments
RobStark92 @Twainy I‘m ok with them being a trilogy as well all my favorite booktubers call them the standalones because they follow different POV characters and aren‘t as tightly knit together as the “trilogies” but I haven‘t read them yet, I‘ve heard others who called them the “Standalone trilogy” as well 😂 so I‘m fine either way. Best served cold sounds really good though I love a good revenge story. 4y
Twainy That‘s about right. All one world. The 2nd “trilogy” just fills in more. I‘m looking forward to Age of Madness 2. 4y
RobStark92 @Twainy I‘ve heard A Little Hatred is the best. I‘m really looking forward to it. I know the industrial revolution thingy starts I wonder if the series will end with technology ? You know like a progression into sci-fi. If he does that 💣 that would break me 4y
Twainy I did love A Little Hatred! 4y

But now for a brief moment grace has been shown from the LORD our God, to leave us an escaped remnant and to give us a peg in His holy place, that our God may enlighten our eyes and grant us a little reviving in our bondage. - Ezekiel 9:8

I‘m not overly religious or even mildly conservative when it comes to Christianity, but I read this verse today and thought it was encouraging.

Welllllll I finally got through First Law 1-3 and man things got wild. Saw a bit coming honestly and the series has flaws but awesome characters. Stay tuned for my review tomorrow or Sunday.
Now, I‘m starting this!! I‘ve heard the protagonist is a nasty guy? Like how nasty are we talking? Glokta nasty? Joffrey nasty? Bring on the Grimdark !! #Fantasy #Grimdark #PrinceOfThorns #BrokenEmpire #Reading #Book #Tea

OnlyYoo I love morally grey characters. I picked this book up too! 4y
Karkar This sounds good! 4y
RobStark92 @OnlyYoo love morally grey characters you say? Then have you read “First Law”? 😇😇😇 4y

RobStark92 @Karkar I know I know I know I‘m super excited 😊 4y
OnlyYoo Not yet but I definitely mean to! Idk what it‘s about but I feel like it has very The Last of Us Vibes which is one of my fav video games 4y
TrishB He is very funny though too..... 4y
RobStark92 @OnlyYoo I just finished the first trilogy, and there‘s some standalones, and A second trilogy which has one book out so far. I‘m going to take a break, and then read the standalones. Think Game of Thrones with a less flowery prose, and less world building. For anyone who likes him more simplistic stick writing style and focus on characters. I‘ll be making a video soon of book three and why you should read. Ill keep you posted with a link :) 4y
RobStark92 @TrishB all right I love a villain with a good sense of humor :) starting Page one now :)) 4y
Jovy I love Abercrombie! I‘m also new to Mark Lawrence and Jorg is similar to Glokta in my opinion. Welcome to Litsy! 📚 4y
RobStark92 @Jovy thanks for the warm welcome. I posted some reviews of first law on YouTube if you‘d like to take a look at them on my channel. 4y
RobStark92 @Jovy also this is my first Mark Lawrence book. I‘m liking it so far 4y
Jovy @RobStark92 I did check out your channel, great review! 4y

Everybody so nice here on Litsy, makes me want to delete Facebook 😂

MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm I second that! Technically I‘ve deleted FB from my life as I avoid it and come here instead. Completely getting rid of it is still rather tempting. 😅👍 4y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Yes!! I rarely get on Facebook anymore!! 4y
RainyDayReading I still have FB but barely use it. I mostly just check the Litsy group page when the app is being buggy to see if anyone else is having the same problem. Litsy is a much nicer place than FB anyway! 4y

Karkar Oh right now Facebook is bad. Everyone arguing about masks, if COVID-19 is real - 😱😱😱😱 much better here 📚📚📚❤️❤️❤️ 4y
WhatWouldJaneDo Cause book people are the best people! 4y
OnlyYoo I feel you. This is really the only other social medial platform I use. Everyone here seems so genuine 4y
Texreader It‘s wonderful here. So glad you have joined us! 4y
Birdsong28 Yes I totally agree with you about Facebook. I hardly go on there now. It is so toxic. 4y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I look at FB here and there for funny pictures. Add a pic on occasion so the family knows I'm still alive & well. Once I get to conspiracy theorists or the keyboard politicians, I close it up. 4y
Nevermore88 Welcome to Litsy! 4y
Bklover Definitely agree about Facebook! So glad you‘ve found Litsy. It‘s wonderful! I never get tired of it📚📚📚 4y
CaliforniaCay This is definitely a very positive, welcoming community. Welcome 🥳 4y

Grave Peril | Jim Butcher

Hey new book friends, I just posted a video doing a review on the Dresden files, Grave Peril. If you have time please watch it, and also if you have a little more time, let me know how I can improve. I‘m finally learning how to edit better and use texts and things like that. Hope y‘all enjoy and here‘s the link:

MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm Watched it and commented over on YouTube. 🤘😆🤘 4y

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Great job!!! 🎉🎊 4y
RobStark92 @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks well thank you very much I really appreciate hearing that :) I feel like I‘m making progress with my videos every time I learn a little bit more but still don‘t really know what the heck I‘m doing 😂😂😂 4y
PurpleyPumpkin Welcome to Litsy! And congrats on starting a YouTube channel. 👍🏽Making videos is a bit daunting for me. 😬I‘ll definitely check it out soon. 4y
RobStark92 @PurpleyPumpkin Thanks a bunch! Appreciate those kind words! It‘s definitely an adjustment, and I‘m doing it all from my iPhone, but hopefully improvement will continue as it has been. 4y
PurpleyPumpkin I‘m sure it‘ll be great. Looking forward to it! 4y
KathyWheeler I‘m waiting for the latest Dresden Files book to come out. (edited) 4y
RobStark92 @KathyWheeler I‘m not that far in yet :) I‘m really excited though the first three have been very promising! 4y
Texreader I enjoyed your video and think there‘s a lot of potential! I‘d recommend scripting it, so there‘s not so many “really”s in it. What about adding some still screens with headers (I.e., to make “chapters” to set off the different things you‘ll be describing about the book or author or series) and quotes from the book? If you can find some royalty-free images to use, that‘d be cool to emphasize some of the parts of the book you described. 👍🏻 4y
RobStark92 @Texreader I‘ve tried scripting before. I used to do a lot of public speaking and I tried scripting and it always just came across as if I was just reading :S I suppose outlining might do well. And yes, you‘re right I should definitely use some quotes I‘ll write that down for next time. And headers would be good as well. I‘m still getting used to editing and I‘m just using iMovie for now lol but thanks a bunch for the advice I‘ll take it to heart! 4y
Texreader @RobStark92 I use outlines too. I think your coverage of topics was great, so headers would be a nice way to break it up. I used to do a lot in iMovie. I think you are going to really enjoy it!! 4y
KathyWheeler @RobStark92 I‘ve enjoyed them all -/ including the graphic novels. If you like audiobooks, James Marsters does a fantastic job of embodying Harry. 4y
RobStark92 @KathyWheeler I have the audiobook as well and yes James Marstees is an incredible narrator!! I‘m not much into graphic novels, which is weird because all my friends think that someone like me would be into them, but I might get them eventually just to have around 4y
KathyWheeler @RobStark92 I read them because I‘d read all the books but still missed Harry. 😊 4y

Pickpick

I‘ll say I loved it. I‘m really enjoying reading the Dresden files and really getting into it. Harry Dresden is such a strong main protagonist, and the side characters like Michael and the rest. Good inclusion of Christian elements without being hateful. Vampires, ghosts, demons and a whole lot more. A few minor issues. Minor issues with writing style. Below link to my YouTube video.

Laughterhp I should start reading this series again. I got to book 7 and stopped. I loved these books though! 4y
RobStark92 @Laughterhp And once I get to book 7, I‘ll get back to you and we can discuss it! Until then no spoilers haha :) can‘t wait to see how far it goes 4y
Laughterhp I know! Don‘t worry! I had to look up and see which book in the series this one was 😂😂 4y
