Soft pick. This series has been on my radar for a while, and I finally got around to reading the first book. I really like the characters and the world-building was unique. However, it was a bit more gruesome than I generally prefer. Despite that, I see myself picking up book 2 to see where these characters go next - but I'll probably #borrownotbuy

Okay, I think I wasn‘t in the right headspace for this book because the world building was a little overwhelming. It‘s a unique concept and it took a while to wrap my brain around all the details. There‘s a lot of creatures and characters to keep up with, which made some parts hard to understand exactly what was happening. But the ending was really good and I‘m definitely gonna give this series a try! Already got the 2nd book on hold!

BooksNBowls Thanks to @5feet.of.fury for this recommendation for my #12bookschallenge!! I can‘t wait to see how everything unfolds!! 😁 1y
5feet.of.fury The world building is unnecessarily heavy in this one, every creature from every pantheon. It honestly gets better and better as it goes. ❤️ 1y
BooksNBowls @5feet.of.fury yeah 1st books in a series are always a hit or miss! I try not to judge on the 1st one. I‘m loving the dynamic between Curran and Kate tho 😏😏 1y

The 2nd half of the book really picks up. This came out in 07 when Urban Fantasy was still THE genre. But everyone was over werewolves/vampires and there had to be more to it. There is too much happening for a first (short!) book, the world with intricate magical rules, power dynamic of species, werebears, obscure creatures of Slavic origin, knights AND then family dynamics AND love stories. but in the end I was intrigued. Kate‘s cool.

This series gets a lot of love, and I‘m going to persevere. But stacking the world building, with every magical thing from every pantheon and these long as heck chapters are not helping 🥲 I‘m sure it will come together

wanderinglynn Ooh, I hope it does come together for you. This is one of my faves. 1y
5feet.of.fury @wanderinglynn I‘m only on Chapter 3 so 🤞 A lot of people recommended it and I enjoyed book 1 of hidden legacy which I read recently. So I‘m expecting great things, I just gotta struggle through the set up. 1y

This passage was so relatable. I read this book a few years ago but this time around I took my time. It is urban fantasy set in the not so distant future, starts off a little choppy but overall engaging and darkly creative.

1️⃣ Sylphrena (Syl for short) from “The Stormlight Archives”. 🧚🏻‍♀️

2️⃣ Humor! I love a book character that can make me laugh! Urban Fantasy especially has so many snarky characters with laugh-out-loud dialogue like Joanne Baldwin, Harry Dresden, Justine Jones, and from the tagged book, Kate Daniels! I still chuckle when I think of how Kate met the Beast Lord… “Here, kitty, kitty!” 😂🦁

1. I‘m fine with any setting as long as the story is good! 😁 But I do have a special weakness for gothic settings... foggy streets, chilly cemeteries, looming mansions! They make my spooky soul smile! 😱👻

I really wanted to like this one. A book club pick and the universe sounded really interesting, but I had a hard time finding any characters likable :/ Kate‘s character felt super one sided (“I‘m a hardass who‘s never afraid and always joking”) and then the second half of the book pretty much centered exclusively around tactless sexual violence against women. Nothing felt nuanced, or subtle. Bummer since it‘s a series I thought I could get into!

I‘ve been terrible at doing this every day but here is another series I cannot get enough of. The Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews. There is 10 main books, many side stories and side series as well though. The author keeps the series interesting throughout the entire series. While the first book wasn‘t my favorite, I was curious about the next one and then I finished the 10 book series, so this is a review of the series rather than the first book. At first, I thought the waves of magic and tech were contrived but interesting. I loved the different myths the authors touch upon. The main character Kate is tough, independent, an expert fighter. If you like sword fights, magic, and monsters, a fun series.

Day 21 of the #Fallisbooked challenge by @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks and @OriginalCyn620

#tricks makes me think of magic which makes me think of the Kate Daniels series which makes me think of one of the greatest introductions for a character ever in an urban fantasy series, when Kate met Curran!

CURRAN - “What kind of a woman greets the Beast Lord with ‘here, kitty, kitty‘?”

If I am being honest, it took me a while to get into this book. It is setup in an odd "time" where magic rolls through and various creatures mix with people. I felt the authors were a little repetitive, but overall good. Kate Daniels is a straight up shit talker, but thankfully she has sword skills to back it up. The characters are all pretty quirky and I blew right though this book after the first few chapters.

When life, responsibility, and adulting become too much I save my favorites for re-reading and they never disappoint:) Kate is independent, stubborn, and a loner in an Atlanta slowly crumbling from technology back into magical madness.
