The Fair Fight
The Fair Fight: A Novel | Anna Freeman
72 posts | 59 read | 131 to read
NAMED A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR BY BOOKPAGE AND LIBRARY JOURNALThe Crimson Petal and the White meets Fight Club: A page-turning novel set in the world of female pugilists and their patrons in late eighteenth-century England. Moving from a filthy brothel to a fine manor house, from the world of street fighters to the world of champions, The Fair Fight is a vivid, propulsive historical novel announcing the arrival of a dynamic new talent. Born in a brothel, Ruth doesnt expect much for herself beyond abuse. While her sisters beauty affords a certain degree of comfort, Ruths harsh looks set her on a path of drudgery. That is until she meets pugilist patron George Dryer and discovers her true callingfighting bare knuckles in the prize rings of Bristol. Manor-born Charlotte has a different cross to bear. Scarred by smallpox, stifled by her social and romantic options, and trapped in twisted power games with her wastrel brother, she is desperate for an escape. After a disastrous, life-changing fight sidelines Ruth, the two women meet, and it alters the perspectives of both of them. When Charlotte presents Ruth with an extraordinary proposition, Ruth pushes dainty Charlotte to enter the ring herself and learn the power of her own strength. A gripping, page-turning story about people struggling to transcend the circumstances into which they were born and fighting for their own places in society, The Fair Fight is a raucous, intoxicating tale of courage, reinvention, and fighting ones way to the top. From the Hardcover edition.

Bailedbailed

I decided to bail when I found myself skimming. I had hoped that when I got to Charlotte‘s POV my interest would be revived, but I really don‘t like her either. I would read a whole book about Ruth if that were an option!

I‘m disappointed to be bailing on my second #NewYearWhoDis book 😐 @Sarz @monalyisha

monalyisha Bummer! I know @readordierachel loved this one so I had high hopes! 9mo
Sarz Don't feel bad about bailing. Life's too short to read books you're not enjoying! Sorry you haven't had much luck with my suggested picks. I'm still making my way through your list, by the way - I had to get two of them through interlibrary loans and it is taking forever! I reserved them in mid-December. I've never used that system before though, so I don't know if this is usual. 9mo
Clare-Dragonfly @Sarz I did love The One Hundred Nights of Hero, and in fact I got the previous/companion book from the library yesterday! I got a book through ILL once and it only took a couple of weeks. 🤔 I still have 11 weeks, according to Libby, for the ebook of 9mo
readordierachel I did love it @monalyisha ! But I totally agree that it needed more Ruth. She was the best character! 9mo

I was very much enjoying this #NewYearWhoDis book until suddenly Ruth‘s POV stopped! I think I would be much more into George‘s section if I weren‘t missing Ruth. I hope we return to her. @Sarz @monalyisha

monalyisha Ohhh... this one‘s on my personal TBR. Looking forward to seeing more of your thoughts! 9mo

I‘ve catalogued the first two big stacks by the bed (pictured earlier today) in LibraryThing and bagged most of them to go to the lakehouse. The books pictured are either from our trip to The Strand this summer or I snagged them from my husband‘s big boxes of free books. He used to edit a sci-fi newsletter and still gets brand spanking new review copies. I picked these from his stacks to give away. Can you imagine?

I immensely enjoyed this book about women boxers in Victorian England. I can't say I have ever read a book like this one. Told from 3 POV's, each one unique and fascinating. Ruth, scrappy, tough, and resourceful, was by far my favorite. Thanks for the recommendation, @LoverofLit.

I really enjoyed this one! It's fun and entertaining, and the characters of Ruth and Charlotte are pretty endearing. What annoyed me though was that it took about 300 pages to get passed the events referred to in the blurb, but then the "devastating consequences" were rushed through in the final 100 pages.

This book was absolutely lovely. I fell in love with the two female POVs, Ruth and Charlotte and when they finally meet, the storyline quickened and held me captive until the very end. The third POV. George furthered the story but didn't hold up solidly to the ladies. This was a book about the WOMEN, and the men around them who influenced their lives. This didn't have a happy fairy tale ending but instead was raw and realistic. ⭐⭐⭐⭐ and 1/2 stars.

Daisey I felt very much the same about this one. Great review! 2y

I'm not digging the second POV storyline as much as the first but Ruth was so solid and kickass, that I can understand why. I still do have a fondness for George Bowden, though I have a feeling his loyalties may be misguided. We shall see!

Wildly entertaining. Fantastic characters, some truly exciting fight scenes, and excellent writing. I'm way into all the slang terms for hands/fists: "paws," "fives," "maulers"! This book kept surprising me & I loved it.

The audiobook is solid but has 3 separate narrators, one for each POV. Since the stories overlap they end up doing a voice for each character. The differences in their styles took me out of it a bit. I plan to reread in print.

I'm not sure what to say about this book. It's brutal, unexpected and I really really enjoyed it. Ruth grows up in a brothel, from where she's drawn into the world of female prize-fighting. Perry & Charlotte lose their family to the pox. And George gets by in his own way. With themes of dependency, poverty, class, unlikely friendships, making your own family & boxing, this made for an unusual but kind of wonderful read. Also kick-ass embroidery!

RachelO If you're listening to the Katy Sobel audio, Ruth and Charlotte's sections are just wonderful (& include genuine Bristol accents rather than generic pirate), but I might borrow a print copy for George's bits!

This was my Olympic sport for #Booked2018 & (I think) my last category this quarter. @Cinfhen @BarbaraTheBibliophage @4thhouseontheleft

There was a lot more to this book than I thought there was going to be! I loved getting more than one POV in each situation--truly amazing how differently people remember things. The female characters had this amazing ability to be likeable and not timid and a little strong while still being historically realistic. The contrast between the classes was done really well and throughout. I do wish there had been more of the boxing/fighting scenes.

Such a fantastic read, and an unexpected conclusion. Loved it so much, I'm going to read it with my peepers next. It's definitely a great production by Audible, too. The actors never failed to deliver every line in this book, managing to keep me planted in the author's world the entire time. I only wish more pages were devoted to the sport of lady boxing in such a genteel era. Perhaps a sequel will bring more info about these brave brawlers.

I loved it! I love the confluence of story lines and character. Ruth doesn't need to be softened to be valuable to her husband or Charlotte, and the noblest man is also the lowest born. I wasn't always certain where the novel was going, but I was always interested in the journey. I loved all three narrators, particularly the women!
