The Fair Fight
The Fair Fight: A Novel | Anna Freeman
80 posts | 68 read | 145 to read
NAMED A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR BY BOOKPAGE AND LIBRARY JOURNALThe Crimson Petal and the White meets Fight Club: A page-turning novel set in the world of female pugilists and their patrons in late eighteenth-century England. Moving from a filthy brothel to a fine manor house, from the world of street fighters to the world of champions, The Fair Fight is a vivid, propulsive historical novel announcing the arrival of a dynamic new talent. Born in a brothel, Ruth doesnt expect much for herself beyond abuse. While her sisters beauty affords a certain degree of comfort, Ruths harsh looks set her on a path of drudgery. That is until she meets pugilist patron George Dryer and discovers her true callingfighting bare knuckles in the prize rings of Bristol. Manor-born Charlotte has a different cross to bear. Scarred by smallpox, stifled by her social and romantic options, and trapped in twisted power games with her wastrel brother, she is desperate for an escape. After a disastrous, life-changing fight sidelines Ruth, the two women meet, and it alters the perspectives of both of them. When Charlotte presents Ruth with an extraordinary proposition, Ruth pushes dainty Charlotte to enter the ring herself and learn the power of her own strength. A gripping, page-turning story about people struggling to transcend the circumstances into which they were born and fighting for their own places in society, The Fair Fight is a raucous, intoxicating tale of courage, reinvention, and fighting ones way to the top. From the Hardcover edition.

1- Charles Dickens The Christmas Carole. We read is aloud every Christmas - it marks the start of our Christmas holidays.
2- The tagged book ... it‘s quite under the radar and a brilliant historical story involving female wrestlers and its gritty, well told and a real page turner.

Historical fiction is a genre that I don't typically read, & I was reminded of the strengths of the genre while immersed in Freeman's novel. Narrated in first person POV by a handful of characters & frequently reexamining the same incidents, I greatly enjoyed this book. I won't be able to squeeze in anymore #NewYearWhoDis titles before the month ends, but plan on reading Say Nothing next month. I loved the 3 I read this month. @Mitch @monalyisha

vivastory Side note: The other day I answered a post about a song that would match a book. Frequently while reading Fair Fight one of my favorite songs randomly popped into my head: Joan Jett's Bad Reputation 3y

Started another #NewYearWhoDis selection today & am about halfway through. Set in late 18th century England, this is more than just a story about a woman pugilist (although I'm sold on that concept alone). Flawed characters, slang, pandemics, class repressions & yes, some of the greatest boxing scenes since Raging Bull.

A well plotted story set in eighteenth century Bristol, of female fighters, brothels, dockyards and slave traders. Fuelled by female anger and desperation, it's brutal and completely took me to the sawdust floored yards with blood and teeth flying in amongst spit and wagers. What I really loved was the use of language - as we duck fibs and despise the culls it adds brilliantly to the drama.

Bailedbailed

I decided to bail when I found myself skimming. I had hoped that when I got to Charlotte‘s POV my interest would be revived, but I really don‘t like her either. I would read a whole book about Ruth if that were an option!

I‘m disappointed to be bailing on my second #NewYearWhoDis book 😐 @Sarz @monalyisha

monalyisha Bummer! I know @readordierachel loved this one so I had high hopes! 5y
Sarz Don't feel bad about bailing. Life's too short to read books you're not enjoying! Sorry you haven't had much luck with my suggested picks. I'm still making my way through your list, by the way - I had to get two of them through interlibrary loans and it is taking forever! I reserved them in mid-December. I've never used that system before though, so I don't know if this is usual. 5y
Clare-Dragonfly @Sarz I did love The One Hundred Nights of Hero, and in fact I got the previous/companion book from the library yesterday! I got a book through ILL once and it only took a couple of weeks. 🤔 I still have 11 weeks, according to Libby, for the ebook of 5y
readordierachel I did love it @monalyisha ! But I totally agree that it needed more Ruth. She was the best character! 5y

I really enjoyed this one! It's fun and entertaining, and the characters of Ruth and Charlotte are pretty endearing. What annoyed me though was that it took about 300 pages to get passed the events referred to in the blurb, but then the "devastating consequences" were rushed through in the final 100 pages.

This book was absolutely lovely. I fell in love with the two female POVs, Ruth and Charlotte and when they finally meet, the storyline quickened and held me captive until the very end. The third POV. George furthered the story but didn't hold up solidly to the ladies. This was a book about the WOMEN, and the men around them who influenced their lives. This didn't have a happy fairy tale ending but instead was raw and realistic. ⭐⭐⭐⭐ and 1/2 stars.

Daisey I felt very much the same about this one. Great review! 6y

Wildly entertaining. Fantastic characters, some truly exciting fight scenes, and excellent writing. I'm way into all the slang terms for hands/fists: "paws," "fives," "maulers"! This book kept surprising me & I loved it.

The audiobook is solid but has 3 separate narrators, one for each POV. Since the stories overlap they end up doing a voice for each character. The differences in their styles took me out of it a bit. I plan to reread in print.

I'm not sure what to say about this book. It's brutal, unexpected and I really really enjoyed it. Ruth grows up in a brothel, from where she's drawn into the world of female prize-fighting. Perry & Charlotte lose their family to the pox. And George gets by in his own way. With themes of dependency, poverty, class, unlikely friendships, making your own family & boxing, this made for an unusual but kind of wonderful read. Also kick-ass embroidery!

rockpools If you're listening to the Katy Sobel audio, Ruth and Charlotte's sections are just wonderful (& include genuine Bristol accents rather than generic pirate), but I might borrow a print copy for George's bits!

There was a lot more to this book than I thought there was going to be! I loved getting more than one POV in each situation--truly amazing how differently people remember things. The female characters had this amazing ability to be likeable and not timid and a little strong while still being historically realistic. The contrast between the classes was done really well and throughout. I do wish there had been more of the boxing/fighting scenes.

Such a fantastic read, and an unexpected conclusion. Loved it so much, I'm going to read it with my peepers next. It's definitely a great production by Audible, too. The actors never failed to deliver every line in this book, managing to keep me planted in the author's world the entire time. I only wish more pages were devoted to the sport of lady boxing in such a genteel era. Perhaps a sequel will bring more info about these brave brawlers.

Cinfhen What ya in the mood for? Loved All Involved & North Water...Alive was very good too, but it took me awhile to read it... 7y
Reviewsbylola I have no idea, other than fast and engaging! @Cinfhen 7y
Reviewsbylola Haha, it definitely won't be that! I don't have the time, but I hope to read it soon! @Laalaleighh 7y
Reviewsbylola That's a possibility! @Mdargusch 7y
Cinfhen I thought All Involved was fast & engaging but I'm afraid I've over hyped it to you 😬if you hate it at least the end papers are cool 😎 (edited) 7y
Laalaleighh @Reviewsbylola lol I don't blame you. It's intimidating. 7y
