#lesserknownbook #booked2021 @Cinfhen @BarbaraTheBibliophage @4thhouseontheleft
I saw this had won the Petrona prize + then saw no one had reviewed it here so fits this thread. Set in 1852 Sweden it uses the real preacher Lars levi laestadius in a crime context as he uses forensic techniques to investigate the murders of women in the parish where he preaches. With his Sami apprentice jussi, he runs up against the local sherriff who with local ⬇️

andrew61 Well to do southern swedes resent both the preachers charismatic practices, the movement south of northerners such as jussi, and the real development of a religious fundamental movement disavowing alcohol. 2y
andrew61 This was a really well drawn historical crime story with a unique take on the holmesian maverick investigator but with a fascinating true story behind it which had me looking up about the true story of this man and his impact on a part of the world I knew nothing about. 2y

Cathythoughts Yes , sounds interesting! And I always love your beer & snacks … now I want some 🤣 2y
EvieBee Andrew, thanks a bunch. I just requested a copy from the library because it sounds like it‘s in my wheelhouse. 2y
andrew61 @youneverarrived very Katie, reminded me of burial rites by hannah Kent if you've read that. 2y
andrew61 @Cathythoughts yes I've realised most of my photos seem to involve alcohol and food 🤣 2y
andrew61 @EvieBee hope you enjoy and look forward to your comments. 2y
youneverarrived Oh I loved Burial Rites, one of my favourite books. 2y
andrew61 @youneverarrived be interested to hear your thoughts should you get to it Katie and it has had some positive reviews on good reads. I loved burial rites as well. 2y

Definitely an appropriate Halloween read, with spooky stories based in places I'm somewhat familiar with! And with just 34 ratings and six reviews on Goodreads, I'd say it definitely qualifies as a #lesserknownbook for #Booked2021!

“I used to think there would be a blinding flash of light someday, and then I would be wise and calm and would know how to cope with everything. Now I see that whatever I‘m like, I‘m pretty well stuck with it for life.”

Stacey is growing older and taking care of everyone around her takes its toll. Shouldn‘t there be something more? Set in the 1960s, in many ways it feels so similar to living and aging and motherhood right now. Thought provoking.

BarbaraBB Looking forward to discuss more of it with my fellow #Manawakans. (edited) 3y
Cinfhen Nice review 💜sounds like a quiet but powerful novel 3y

BarbaraBB @Cinfhen Thanks. It is. 3y
batsy Oof, that quote! 💔 I still haven't started 🙈 Nice review and I'm glad it was a pick for you! 3y
merelybookish Hard relate to that quote! 😐Hoping to start today! 3y
Cinfhen I got a package notification today!!! PO is closed today & tomorrow for YK hopefully I‘ll get to it on Friday 😊Thanks so much xx 3y
Cathythoughts Great quote ! I don‘t agree though 😁 3y
Megabooks That quote! Great review. 3y
vivastory Great review! I'm glad it worked so well for you. Laurence's work is filled with wonderful, if uncomfortable, insights. I think you'd really like Jest of God. It follows her sister Rachel. A very different character, but equally memorable. 3y
LeahBergen Lovely review! I haven‘t started yet either, @batsy 😬 3y
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen That took forever again! Glad it made it! Have a good Yom Kippur, hopefully no migraine 🤞🏽💜 (edited) 3y
BarbaraBB @merelybookish @Cathythoughts I am glad you don‘t agree, it‘s better. I sometimes do agree though 🤷🏻‍♀️ 3y
BarbaraBB @vivastory I will read it for sure. She really has her way with getting under your skin. 3y
merelybookish Oh I must have misspoke. I absolutely relate to this quote and much of Stacey's thinking (the ambivalence, harsh inner critic, etc 3y
BarbaraBB @merelybookish I probably misunderstood with my not so good English! 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Lovely review and picture. 3y

Two recently published reads that I did book tours for and thought were excellent. Each is a #LesserKnownBook that deserves some more love and hype. I‘ll tag Deer Season below.

#FallTreasures #Day13 #LesserKnownBook

I got a bit off track last week with the daily prompts (just busy with life), but getting back to it starting today!

Mark Twain is one of my favorite authors, and while he is very much appreciated, this book is super underrated and not nearly as well known as his novels about Tom & Huck. This book is Twain‘s memoir of his years after Life on the Mississippi, when he traveled through the American West.

Saknicole Mark Twain all day every day! That‘s my motto 😂 3y
