Tipping The Velvet | Sarah Waters
Piercing the shadows of the naked stage was a single shaft of rosy limelight, and in the centre of this was a girl: the most marvellous girl - I knew it at once! - that I had ever seen. A saucy, sensuous and multi-layered historical romance, Tipping the Velvet follows the glittering career of Nan King - oyster girl turned music-hall star turned rent boy turned East End 'tom'.

Fun fact: I did not know what ‘tipping the velvet‘ meant until this book. Yay for learning new things! 😂

Loved this book from start to finish. In retrospect, this is not surprising as I do enjoy a good Dickens-esque, sprawling Victorian London drama. This is that, plus a lesbian coming-of-age story. 🙌🏻

Excellent writing and a wonderful cast of supporting characters. Nan is not always a likable heroine, but she‘s so entertaining.

What a beautiful and delightful story of how heartach, strife and personal choices can influence who you become. This was a delightfully queer story that was at times a bit slow but overall enjoyable. Sarah Waters is magnificent in her work i highly recommend!

I have been trying to finish this book for over a month and it usually takes me less than a week to finish a book. I can't read more than a few pages before I get bored. I realky enjoyed Waters', The Paying Guests, but this one just isnt't grabbing me the same way. I feel very indifferent about the MC, Nancy. That is never a good sign for me.

Liked, but didn‘t love. The book‘s descriptive power is its strength as well as its weakness. I felt really sucked into each of the settings, but I needed a more compelling plot to pull me along. At almost 500 pages, it‘s a little too long. She could have sacrificed one of the subplots for the sake of a tighter narrative.

I did really enjoy it - I just wanted more from it. This was her debut, so I may give The Fingersmith a try.

Emilymdxn I liked this one a lot but prefer Fingersmith for sure I thought it had a tighter plot 3mo

Liked it but the end felt contrived to me. I read an interview with her that said this is not really based on any historical record (of the LGBTQ community in Victorian London). Glad I read it, but the ending fell flat for me.

I suppose I was due to be disappointed by a Sarah Waters novel. Based on the description and the author, I was sure I would love this book but...eh. I didn‘t feel any connection to the characters and considered abandoning the book before I finished it. Ultimately, there was enough to keep me reading until the end, but not nearly enough for me to recommend it.

The main thread is life, love/romance and exploring sex between women in 1890‘s. What I liked about this story is setting. Late Victorian London is depicted in a very vivid and colorful, vibrant manner. What I didn‘t like is a little frivolous depiction of a main protagonist - Nancy. She is without any deeper characterization, and because of that - her responses in a different situations are quite unconvincing. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

I‘m still not sure how I feel about this book. I enjoyed the Victorian setting, but I also found many aspects of the women‘s ability to find each other and freedom to express themselves rather unbelievable. I didn‘t like the main character through much of the story, but in the end I did believe she was finally realizing her mistakes and making better choices. Overall, it‘s another book I can appreciate reading due to the #1001books list.

#BookMail Today was just one book delivered for a change! This is the 20th Anniversary Edition of this iconic novel, which believe it or not, I‘ve never read. Always meant to, especially after watching the miniseries 15 years ago. It‘s the story of Nan, a woman in Victorian England who falls in love with another woman. Moving from Whitstable to London, it‘s one of the most famous historical LGBTQ stories to be written.

It took me a while to get into this book, for me the chapters were a little lengthy. I‘m the sort who likes to bookmark at the end of a chapter. However, when the story gets going it does so with force! It‘s well written & lets just say it - ridiculously raunchy! I found myself in a love hate relationship with Nancy, for every time I felt sorry for her, there was another when I thought she got what she deserved. I‘d say it‘s well worth a read.

posierope Never read this one but have the BBC adaptation on DVD. Maybe should give the book a look in! 1y

I liked but didn‘t love this, I think because I didn‘t like the main character, Nancy. Another character says of her “All you have eyes and thoughts for is yourself; yourself, and the women you have...” which sums up how I felt about her. An interesting look into hidden parts of Victorian life though, although I don‘t know how much is based on historical fact. I do enjoy Sarah Waters‘ writing, but enjoyed The Paying Guests more than this.

I loved Waters‘ The Paying Guests—that novel had mystery and suspense mixed in with the romance. This one doesn‘t—yes there are great scenes of 1890s London, but romance is one of my least-favorite genres, so this fell a little flat for me. #1001books #reading1001 #lgbtfiction #historicalfiction #literaryfiction #romance #englishfiction

For a story that was FAR more sexually explicit than I was expecting, the book itself was very slow-moving and generally boring. Much of the time, the writing was lovely, but the mundane details never ceased. If I had been a Nancy/Nan fan, or if the book had been 100 pages shorter, I might‘ve felt differently. Clever title, though. 😉

AlaMich Velvet is my favorite Sarah Waters, Fingersmith second. And for those who like Fingersmith, there is a Korean movie adaptation which is awesome called The Handmaiden. 2y

#bookhaul from a few days ago. Treated myself to this gorgeous 20th anniversary edition of Tipping the Velvet ❤️ it‘s one of my favourite books and I don‘t own it so when I saw this edition was coming out I knew I had to get it. Time for a re-read soon.

Cinfhen Lovely 😊 great haul 2y
batsy It's a beautiful edition! I was excited when I saw it, too :) Her books have unfortunately been given some pretty ordinary covers thus far... 2y
emilyhaldi Pretty!! I've been meaning to read that for so long.... 2y

So after spending the last 6 hours driving around making deliveries, and of course listening to something good the whole time (Bonk by Mary Roach is an excellent audio companion), I'm back at home with another amazing candle and settling in with some Sarah Waters. 8 hours down, 16 more to go. #24in48readathon #24in48 @24in48

Since my attention span is about that of a two year old, I've already switched books. Settling in now for some snuggles with the pup, amazing candle smells & light, and liquid gold in my fav Margaret Atwood mug (she has her own coffee y'all!) Ahhhhh - the perfect hygge kind of morning. #24in48 #24in48readathon @24in48 #hyggelife #candles #coffee #atwoodblend

CuriousG And if any of you are as candle obsessed as I am right now, that tree & owl are 100 % beeswax candles and burn beautifully. I've burned one owl already and very literally not a drop of wax dripped down until the very end when there was no outer shell left to hold it in. Check out @ladygreenbeeswax on Instagram - she also makes skull candles. Skulls!!!!! 💀☠💀 2y
tpixie Cool! I was just going to say I have green tree candles that I put out for Xmas similar to your yellow one. I like the yellow!! 2y
tpixie I just ordered a votive! 2y

Bibliogeekery Gorgeous photo!! One of my favourite books! 💕 #queerbooks 2y
CuriousG @tpixie I LOVE her beeswax candles. I have scent sensitivities even when only pure essential oils are used, so I appreciate having the subtlety of the beeswax smell, and none of the mess of cheap candles. 🔥 2y
CuriousG @Bibliogeekery I'm about 100 pages in and love it so far. 2y
tpixie My nose doesn‘t like most candles either! Can‘t wait! 2y

Pickpick

I honestly can‘t believe I haven‘t read this yet. I was lucky to spot it on Netgalley as the 20th anniversary edition, so thought the time to read it was now! Glad I did - such a good story. And how far we‘ve come as a society in even the last 100 years! There‘s further to go, of course (sadly), but I hope we‘ll get there (sharpish!!).

Tamra I have yet to read her work! 2y
Clare_Riley @Tamra this is my second (The Night Watch). I need to read more! I think I might have at least one other (probably two) on my bookshelves. I need to work through my Netgalley ‘pile‘ before I start on the shelves 😆 What a problem to have!😂 2y
