Nettle & Bone
Nettle & Bone | T. Kingfisher
With her signature mix of the grim and the delightful, award-winning author T. Kingfisher takes the old bones of fantasy and fairytale and makes them into something entirely new in this enchanting adventure. After years of seeing her sisters suffer at the hands of an abusive prince, Marrathe shy, convent-raised, third-born daughterhas finally realized that no one is coming to their rescue. No one, except for Marra herself. Seeking help from a powerful gravewitch, Marra is offered the tools to kill a princeif she can complete three impossible tasks. But, as is the way in tales of princes, witches, and daughters, the impossible is only the beginning. On her quest, Marra is joined by the gravewitch, a reluctant fairy godmother, a strapping former knight, and a chicken possessed by a demon. Together, the five of them intend to be the hand that closes around the throat of the prince and frees Marra's family and their kingdom from its tyrannous ruler at last. Nettle & Bone is the kind of book that immediately feels like an old friend. Fairytale mythic resonance meets homey pragmatism in this utterly delightful story. It's creepy, funny, heartfelt, and full of fantastic characters I absolutely loved! Melissa Caruso, author of The Tethered Mage

Started this last night which was a huge mistake, because I couldn't put it down. 🥱 Sorry, all the other books I was reading! #WhimsicalReads

Soft pick. Outside my usual reading spectrum. I don't read much fantasy unless it skews more sci-fi. But an enjoyable fairy tale. While not totally my jam, always glad when Litsy gets me to read outside my usual spectrum. And what‘s not love about a bone dog? Enjoyed the feminist take on princess tales. Might join next month! #whimsicalreads @katereadsYA

Marra, in the fairy tale tradition of Rescue by the Sister, sets out with unlikely allies to save her sister from the abusive king who married her.

Wow! I adored this. I loved how all the characters were presented. Marra was so relatable. The world building was just broad enough without being overwhelming. Pacing was great. Fairy tale elements everywhere. Narration was perfect for the tone. My first by Kingfisher, but not the last. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌗

Mara‘s family and kingdom is held hostage by the ruthless king on their northern border, she sets off on a journey to save her sister from his clutches. Mara enlists the help of a dust-wife, a magical woman who can speak to the dead, and they collect other friends to help on their mission along the way.
One of the most unique fantasy books I‘ve read in a long time and it has just enough darkness to make the stakes real.

I meant to share this a few days ago. I started reading Nettle & Bone for the #WhimsicalReads bookclub pick this month. It's pretty good so far! The audiobook version was interesting while I brushed Fancy out and trimmed her feet. She decided to roll in the burs in the yard. 🤦‍♀️ She knows how to work the cute face though. #dogsoflitsy

This was my first T. Kingfisher novel, and I was not disappointed! I‘d probably stick to a 3.5/5 if I were to rate it. Only because some of the conversations didn‘t seem to flow very well to me. I think it‘s because of the accents and stylings by the narrator though. Anyways- super fun story and lovable characters!

#whimsicalreads book club discussion! Okay, all my whimsy litsy loves I have a quick question, and I'd love some follow-up. Currently, we are holding discussions through Fable but I have noticed there is not much interaction, which is perfectly okay we are all super busy in our lives. I like that app because it doesn't give away spoilers when others are not caught up and you can choose what you see as you read along! My question is....cont. below.

KateReadsYA Would you all like it better if I did discussions on Litsy?! I can do quarterly, halfway through or at the end of the month we can hold one big discussion! What do you all think?! @Linsy @ShelleyBooksie @gracielee8 @SamAnne @MrsRoberts96 @joolz_92 @RedxoHearts @Clwojick @Read4life @wanderinglynn @Allylu @AbigailJaneBlog @persephone1408 @KristiAhlers @GirlNamedJesse @BooksNBowls @Liatrek @PageShifter @ozma.of.oz 4w
LitStephanie I do not join Litsy reads if the discussions are not on Litsy. We are all so indundated with social media, and I try to minimize the sites and apps I interact with. I would be more likely to join in if the discussions were on here. Just my two cents. 4w
persephone1408 @KateReadsYA I am on litsy more. I haven't been on fable in a while. Litsy is the only social media I am on. 4w
See All 9 Comments
Read4life I think I would be more active if the discussion was on Litsy. If everyone is good about using the spoiler function it works well. Quarterly, halfway or only at the end all work for me. 🤓 4w
KateReadsYA @LitStephanie @persephone1408 I agree 100 percent with both of you! I only use Litsy and Pinterest for recipes and crafting, so I'd like to keep my social media as small as possible. Thank you for your input. @Read4life thanks so much for letting me know. This definitely helps. 4w
Clwojick I agree! I won‘t be downloading another app, so although I‘ve been reading the monthly pick, I haven‘t bothered to join in on fable. I don‘t do well with “scheduled” reading and tend to read a book start to finish in one go, so I‘d say end of month would work best for me. That way, whether I finished it at the start or towards the end of the month, I‘d be able to join in with my thoughts. 4w
SamAnne Nettle & Bone will be my first read with this group. Hah! I‘ve never even heard of Fable….I‘m up for anything. I recently did the Buddy Read function on StoryGraph. I like that it hid comments based on how far people had read unless they asked to. 4w
Liatrek I really only check Litsy. I have fable but rarely use it 🙂 (edited) 4w
KateReadsYA @Clwojick @SamAnne @Liatrek Thank you all so much for letting me know your opinion on this! I feel like everyone is on the same page that they'd like to keep it through Litsy 🤗 4w

I loved T Kingfisher‘s What Moves the Dead, so I was happy to pick this up for the Sword and Laser‘s February book club. Nettle & Bone is a much different book in tone and subject. This is a fairy tale. Although it includes dark and horrific subjects, the overall tone is light. I am impressed that Kingfisher managed to maintain a lighthearted tone without dismissing the darkness and horror.

I finally tried a T. Kingfisher book and, as I suspected, I loved it! With a couple of deceptively powerful old women, a man burdened with too many muscles and too much honor, a dog built of bones, and a youngest-fairy-tale-sister heroine who saves the day with her knowledge of needlework, what‘s not to love?! I wish I could have spent much more time with these characters, but the plot was both so complex and so neatly contained, I can‘t complain.

Finished this one on Thursday. This was an interesting story. It mentions fairytales and what usually happens in the tales. Marra lives at a nunnery and is very naive. She learns her sister, married to a prince is being abused. So she sets out to save her. She rounds up a group of people and a bone dog and they journey across to try and kill the king.

Tagged book was my absolute favorite and one I definitely expect to see on my end of the year “best of” list. Honorable mentions for True Grit by Charles Portis, Maria Dahvana Headley‘s translation of Beowulf, Robert Kolker‘s Hidden Valley Road, Verspertine by Margaret Rogerson and Little Thieves by Margaret Owen. I‘m envious of anyone who gets to read this for the first time, who gets to meet the fearless Marra & go adventuring with her as she works to save her sister from the clutches of an abusive prince. This is the best sort of fairy tale—dark, full of sly humor, populated by strong, capable, & interesting female characters…not to mention bone dogs & demon possessed chickens. Loved it, loved it, loved it & I‘m already looking forward to a reread.

#2022Book127
This might be one of my new all-time favorite books. It made me laugh out loud, gasp in shock, and even tear up a little at the end. I went into it expecting just a generic fantasy novel, but T. Kingfisher takes all of the best fairy tale tropes and warps them in the best and most unusual ways.

What a disaster. The beginning with the time jumps is very confusing. The writing is amateurish. Worst of all is the main character. She is supposed to be 30, but has zero life skills & experiences and behaves like a 10 years old. She is naïve and doesn‘t understand one bit of the world. This could be a Middle Grade Book.

This one was added to my Spooky October TBR. It was advertised as horror so I thought it would work perfectly. This was not a horror book. It was however a very good fairytale retelling. So was a pleasant surprise. Defiantly recommend this book if you are looking for a quick read reminiscent of old school fairytales. Just do not go into this expecting horror.

I really love this author. ❤️

This is an excellent fairytale… I guess you could say it‘s on the darker side (the good fairytales always are), but there‘s nothing scary, gory, or spicy about it, and it left me with the warm fuzzies. It‘s well-written, magical, and so very funny. I don‘t think I could really be a proper witch now without a demon hen. 🐓

Definitely a walk on the dark side of fairy tales, where everything has a price. MC Marra is essentially, keenly relatable, and there is plenty of creep factor, with a side of wry humour to keep things from being too weighed down. The plot is fast paced and engaging — I stayed up again reading, lol. I should know better…but a definite emphatic pick on this one!

I thoroughly enjoyed the first third of this book. It was dark, and full of magic, the blistered lands had promise and the bone dog (named Bonedog) was wonderful. Then the blistered lands disappeared, and except for the appearance of the dust-wife and her demonic chicken, it devolved into a combination road trip/romance that wasn‘t as much fun. Marta, as a main character is kind of witless which is a shame. Flashes of good story so I kept going.

4¼⭐This was a fun little fantastical romp. It‘s the kind of dark horror that almost any age can get into since it‘s not very adult…and yet, not necessarily YA. I would call this light supernatural horror with dark undertones. It has a menagerie of characters, including a bone dog and a demon chicken. They are all on a quest to save a sister from her abusive husband/would-be king. There‘s humor, heart, and even a tiny smidgen of romance.
