The Matzah Ball
The Matzah Ball: A Novel | Jean Meltzer
Oy! to the world Rachel Rubenstein-Goldblatt is a nice Jewish girl with a shameful secret: she loves Christmas. For a decade shes hidden her career as a Christmas romance novelist from her family. Her talent has made her a bestseller even as her chronic illness has always kept the kind of love she writes about out of reach. But when her diversity-conscious publisher insists she write a Hanukkah romance, her well of inspiration suddenly runs dry. Hanukkahs not magical. Its not merry. Its not Christmas. Desperate not to lose her contract, Rachels determined to find her muse at the Matzah Ball, a Jewish music celebration on the last night of Hanukkah, even if it means working with her summer camp archenemyJacob Greenberg. Though Rachel and Jacob havent seen each other since they were kids, their grudge still glows brighter than a menorah. But as they spend more time together, Rachel finds herself drawn to Hanukkahand Jacobin a way she never expected. Maybe this holiday of lights will be the spark she needed to set her heart ablaze.

Yesterday‘s library #bookhaul - bottom for #YABuddyRead, two seasonal reads, and an accidental find (it‘s supposed to be for kiddo‘s history studies, but it‘s beyond her grade level - but it coincides nicely with the most recent #SheSaid book so I just have to read it myself!).

3 STARS - This was a sweet without the saucy holiday RomCom that had great representation of the Jewish faith and a deeper element involving chronic illness. I had a hard time getting on board with a few plot choices but I loved learning more about the Jewish faith & getting a better understanding of what it's like to live with chronic illness.

I loved the characters and the initial complication, I got a bit thrown by the business model of the hero‘s company (that is… not how social media revenue works), and I was a bit concerned that some of the hijinks well into the book would cause me to tap out from second hand embarrassment (I do better with rom than romcom) - but I stuck it out, and the author stuck the HEA. Would recommend!

I needed something fun and frothy, and this fit the bill. There were some things that didn't work, or didn't quite make sense, but if you don't think about it too much it works as a fun diversion!

I thoroughly enjoyed this charming rom com starring Rachel Rubenstein-Goldblatt, a nice Jewish girl who is obsessed with Christmas. Not a big deal, except her father is a well-respected rabbi. And she lives a secret double life as Margot Cross, a prominent author of over twenty Christmas romance novels and four made-for-TV movies. But now her publisher wants her to write a Hannukah romance, but Rachel is not enamored with Hannukah.

I've been requesting eARCs of holiday books since July so this is your first warning. This is an actual Hanukkah romance with a heroine who also has a chronic illness.

Rachel Rubenstein-Goldblatt is the daughter of a prominent rabbi but has secretly made a living from a career based on loving Christmas and writing Christmas romance novels and rom-coms. ↘️

ReadingEnvy Her publisher wants her to use her lived experience to write a "more diverse" romance and in the process she reconnects with a boy from Jewish summer camp, her first kiss, of course.↘️ 1mo
ReadingEnvy At first I was a bit skeptical, was this author just throwing a bunch of Jewish stuff in to a typical romance? But I think she pulls it off for reasons I'll leave for the reader to discover. It went deeper and was more personal to the author than I might have expected, and that makes a difference. #romantsy 1mo

This felt so much like a Hallmark holiday special (if Hallmark actually had any specials about Hannukah that aren't actually about Christmas). It's cute and cheesey and full of holiday spirit. Despite growing up with family using Yiddish words, I could have used a glossary, so there was definitely some googling of terms.

It's lovely to have a Jewish romance. I liked this one but didn't love it. 3.5💖

Sweet and not at all spicy, just about as wholesome as it gets! I rarely read romance, but I requested a copy of this because it was refreshing to see a holiday romance that wasn‘t Christmas! The heroine having Chronic Fatigue syndrome gave this a nice little twist, and the enemies to lovers trope with all the usual misunderstandings worked fine, I would just have preferred a bit more heat! But I‘m not sure that‘s a thing in holiday romances?🤷‍♀️

EvieBee Yay! I currently have this out from the library on Kindle. Can‘t wait to read. 2mo

1/5⭐ Adults oddly stuck acting like they're 12 & constantly reminiscing on that age; nonsensical, unrealistic, boundary-breaking decisions/dialogue; conflict based on lack of communication; a book with Jewish characters whose entire intro revolves around bashing Jewish holidays in favor of idolizing Christmas; constant thoughts about people's appearances no real person would have...no thanks.

Lauredhel @4thhouseontheleft I do like the way these challenges have me digging through my giant TBR and library listing instead of just picking up the next book in a series that I already know. And also love how they're not super prescriptive about genre. (edited) 2mo

Reading this for my VERY LAST #booked2021 prompt! It's great so far except for sometimes wanting to slap the hero upside the head. He seems redeemable, though. Great Jewish and disabled rep.

Lauredhel @Cinfhen my final verdict is mixed, unfortunately. I liked the Jewish and disability rep, but the boundary pushing tweaked me a fair bit. I would read her again though. 2mo

Gah! It was a mistake to start this just before bed because I just could not stop reading! But it was worth the late night; this is so darn cute! It was like an adorable Hallmark holiday movie and I had all the feels; I laughed, I cried, and everything in between. Also, the author included some great info in ME and lots of cultural info for me to learn more about Judaism.
