Morning Star
Morning Star: Book III of The Red Rising Trilogy | Pierce Brown
Red Rising thrilled readers and announced the presence of a talented new author. Golden Sonchanged the game and took the story of Darrow to the next level. Now comes the exhilarating conclusion to the Red Rising Trilogy: Morning Star.Darrow would have lived in peace, but his enemies brought him war. The Gold overlords demanded his obedience, hanged his wife, and enslaved his people. But Darrow is determined to fight back. Risking everything to transform himself and breach Gold society, Darrow has battled to survive the cutthroat rivalries that breed Societys mightiest warriors, climbed the ranks, and waited patiently to unleash the revolution that will tear the hierarchy apart from within. Finally, the time has come. But devotion to honor and hunger for vengeance run deep on both sides. Darrow and his comrades-in-arms face powerful enemies without scruple or mercy. Among them are some Darrow once considered friends. To win, Darrow will need to inspire those shackled in darkness to break their chains, unmake the world their cruel masters have built, and claim a destiny too long deniedand too glorious to surrender.Advance praise for Morning Star Multilayered and seething with characters who exist in a shadow world between history and myth, much as in Frank Herberts Dune . . . an ambitious and satisfying conclusion to a monumental saga.Kirkus Reviews Praise for Pierce Brown and the Red Rising Trilogy Red Rising [A] spectacular adventure . . . one heart-pounding ride . . . Every action seems to flow into the next.NPR In a word, Golden Son is stunning. It took all summer, but we finally finished listening to this audiobook on our drive home from a weekend out of town. This was a reread for me, but first time listening to the whole series on audio; last year I introduced my boyfriend to the series starting with the first book, and after a year we finally made it through the original trilogy. I have not read the subsequent books, so we will start Iron Gold on our next road trip.

Happy Sunday everyone! Took about an hour‘s drive out of town to hike Twin Peaks trail in Chugach State Park. Great views of Eklutna Lake (in the background), the last of the summer wildflowers, and lots of blueberries above the tree line. The drive allowed us to listen to more of our shared audiobook (tagged). Only about 4 hours left, so hoping to finish this book before the end of the summer.

CarPlay has made audiobook listening on road trips so much easier. After two road trips in two weeks, we‘ve made it about 2/3 through the audiobook. Still hoping to finish before the end of the summer. We have more driving planned in July. +4 hours for #LittenListen.

View from our drive down to the Kenai Peninsula for camping on Friday. Chugach Mountains to the left, Turnagain Arm to the right, and Kenai Mountains in the background.

bthegood I will be in that area in August - with my nephews - looking forward to seeing that beautiful scenery - enjoy your trips. 11mo

It‘s been awhile since we listened to our audiobook, but driving to visit my parents for Father‘s Day gave us the opportunity to fit in about 4.5 hours of listening this weekend. Added to my #LittenListen count too. We are about halfway through now, and hopefully will finish after a few more road trips this summer.

ReaperOfTerrasen I don‘t know about you, but I‘m still patiently (sort of) waiting for the final Red Rising book...or at least any information on it. 11mo
Kimberlone @ReaperOfTerrasen I‘ve only read the original trilogy (when they were first released). Working on listening to the audiobooks again now with my bf. I do have the two more recent ones in the queue (I have them both physical and audio), but just haven‘t gotten to them yet. I hope that pierce brown creates a new world when he finishes this series. I love his writing and would like to read an entirely new story with new characters. 11mo

Didn‘t get a *ton* of reading done this weekend, since the weather was so nice, and my boyfriend and I spent a weekend out of town. We stayed in a yurt in Talkeetna, AK and ended up with way better weather than we were expecting. The skies were clear enough on Friday that we had amazing views of The Great One (Denali).

I did read ~30 pages of Bleak House, and we listened to ~6 hours of Morning Star during our drive.

#SeriesRead2021 @TheSpineView

I'm still loving my re-read of this series so I can finally read book 5. 💙

Brown once again delivers a stellar story full of heart, complex characters, and non-stop action. The betrayals in this addition still caught me off guard even though I knew they were coming.

I can't wait to start book 4! 😀

I am afraid to say it but book number one did not live up to book number 3. That is to say I did not hate this book. It brought the threads of the story to a nice and convenient conclusion but I was not surprised by any of it and I picked it about 200 pages out and frankly that does not for a good read make! I will have to hear some fantastic things about the next trilogy for me to continue with it. 3/5 stars.

This turned out to be such a fantastic conclusion to this trilogy! So many twists and turns, and truly unexpected gambits. Ruthless strategy and headstrong ideals clash in ways that make me bow to Pierce Brown's terrifying mind.

Definitely going to try and get a copy of Iron Gold at some point in the near future.

wordslinger42 It's been quite a time since I read this trilogy, but I remember not liking Morning Star as much as the first two books. If I remember right, I think I found it really difficult to connect with the main character in the third book 2y
InLibrisVeritas @wordslinger42 I can definitely see how that would be an issue. For me personally this series is all about the insane strategies they come up with, and the side characters like Sevros and Ragnar. Darrow is hit and miss for me most of the time. 2y
wordslinger42 @InLibrisVeritas Haha yes, the way Pierce Brown's mind works as far as the strategies and plot twists is impressive! I just have a hard time sticking with a series if I don't care about the MC. It's definitely made me hesitant to try Iron Gold (especially when I can't get it from the library right now!) 2y

I am currently trying to pin down my TBR for the next 7 days. I am thinking either Manga or library books. I am a mood reader so this TBR thing is new to me, but I am enjoying the change up.

Do you have TBRs or are you a mood reader?

I loved rereading this series. It was so different to see the story unfold after knowing the ending. I‘d forgotten some things, but knowing which characters were lost or survived, who betrayed who, etc. just made it a whole new experience. It‘s a dark story, but there is so much joy to be found in the relationships and loyalty between the characters. I know I‘ll return to these books again.

Wow! Taken me two weekends but what a big and wonderful story. So may things I could mention but can‘t leave any spoilers. I strongly urge people to read this brilliant trilogy, but do allow a good chunk of time to read the books so that you can savour and get lost in the story and world Pierce Brown has created. Best read of the year. ❤️
Now up to 17hours 39 minutes in the #24B4Monday Readathon.

Dragonfairykats There's actually 5 books. 3y
Andrew65 Was it originally planned as a trilogy? Thanks for alerting me to that. 😊 Do you know if more are planned or will 5 books be the end of the Red Rising story? (edited) 3y
DGRachel Morning Star is the end of the original trilogy. There is a second trilogy that starts 10 years after the events of MS. The first book is Iron Gold, the second (Dark Age) releases on July 30th. 3y
See All 17 Comments
DGRachel The scope of the second trilogy is even bigger than the first as Pierce switches from exclusively Darrow‘s first person POV to multiple POV chapters (four in Iron Gold and I think 5 or 6 in Dark Age but I don‘t know for sure yet). No idea when book three will come out. Dark Age was delayed more than a year. I preordered it in Oct/Nov 2017... 3y
DGRachel Dark Age is also the longest of the five books so far, according to Pierce. It‘s going to be a beast of a book and it‘s going to emotionally destroy the fandom. I am simultaneously terrified and excited. 3y
TrishB I haven‘t started the second set yet, I have Iron Gold, maybe I‘ll start when Dark Age is released! @DGRachel 3y
