The Nature of Witches
The Nature of Witches | Rachel Griffin
139 posts | 54 read | 1 reading | 58 to read
Practical Magic meets Twister in this debut contemporary fantasy standalone about heartbreaking power, the terror of our collapsing atmosphere, and the ways we unknowingly change our fate. For centuries, witches have maintained the climate, their power from the sun peaking in the season of their birth. But now their control is faltering as the atmosphere becomes more erratic. All hope lies with Clara, an Everwitch whose rare magic is tied to every season. In Autumn, Clara wants nothing to do with her power. It's wild and volatile, and the price of her magic--losing the ones she loves--is too high, despite the need to control the increasingly dangerous weather. In Winter, the world is on the precipice of disaster. Fires burn, storms rage, and Clara accepts that she's the only one who can make a difference. In Spring, she falls for Sang, the witch training her. As her magic grows, so do her feelings, until she's terrified Sang will be the next one she loses. In Summer, Clara must choose between her power and her happiness, her duty and the people she loves...before she loses Sang, her magic, and thrusts the world into chaos.

I burned out on YA tropes a few years ago and have avoided them as much as possible, so I was prepared to hate this book club pick before I even started. It has many of the things I dislike-a whiny, misunderstood teen protagonist, a sickly sweet romance, the savior who just wants to be normal, and sociopathic adults in positions of authority. But, I ended up enjoying the story and watching our heroine come into her own. Grumble, grumble. 😂

5feet.of.fury Same!!! “I just want to be normal” 🙄 😂 11mo

Just like the last book I read, this had great worldbuilding but the rest didn‘t really work for me. I found the characters in this one frustrating and infuriating at times. (Sang is great though. A+++ love interest.) The plot also felt a little thin. I really think the information leading up to the critical revelation could have been fleshed out more.

Not a great start to my year or #AuldLangSpine reading! 😕 @MoonWitch94 @monalyisha

monalyisha @Clare-Dragonfly Fingers crossed for your next choice! 1y
MoonWitch94 TBH I totally understand where your coming from and don‘t entirely disagree. It had excellent potential to be a 5 star read for me, for all the reasons you listed, it wasn‘t. I still liked it enough to be a pick, though. What are you picking next? Also, you live in Philly/Philly area?!?! I think we are not very far part! 😀 1y
Clare-Dragonfly @MoonWitch94 I plan to try Beheld next! No, sadly, I‘m not in Philly anymore! I grew up there (and volunteered, then worked, at the library) and now live in Maryland. But Philly library cards don‘t expire so I have that one and my Maryland card both in Libby! I can have soooo many holds this way 😁 1y
MoonWitch94 @Clare-Dragonfly My favorite from my list is this one! It was my only 5 star read last year. If you don‘t get to it in January, you should at least put it on your TBR. 1y
Clare-Dragonfly @MoonWitch94 I probably won‘t get to it in January but I‘ll definitely be sure to read it this year! Thanks for telling me which is your top favorite! I am not sure I can pick one 😆 1y

I really enjoyed this witchy coming-of-age YA novel. Clara is an Everwitch, whose power is at maximum strength year round, unlike other witches who only have maximum power in their birth season. The downside of having this power is that her magic is difficult to control, and seeks to harm those whom she loves best. I enjoyed watching her try to learn how to master this power, while also dealing with self doubt and fear. ⬇️

julieclair The descriptions of how the witches used their magic, particularly in relation to the natural world, were enchanting. Great pick for October's #SundayBuddyRead , @TheBookHippie ! #Scarathlon #TeamSlaughter @Clwojick #Pointsathon @GHABI4ROSES @DieAReader #31by31 @catsandbooks 1y

Read for #SundayBuddyRead 🧙🏻‍♀️🪄✨Witchy YA book that addresses climate change in a unique way. Clara is a rare “Ever”-a witch who gets her power from all the seasons & that great power has caused her devastating loss, making her want to deplete herself of it. There‘s romance & angst & global weather issues & it‘s a good October read. Kindle tells me there were 799 #ScarathonWordSearch words, so an extra 7990 points for #TeamMonsterMash + ⬇️

Your thoughts?
I‘m glad we read this, it‘s far better than I anticipated and I can see it helping teens, so it‘s a win, however for me it was just a nice October read. 🎃

What stood out to you?

Also I‘m not satisfied with the not really answers on her parents death… you?!

AmyG I am not a big YA fan so I am happy this is finished. I was grateful it was a quick read. It wasn‘t terrible. 1y
Sargar114 I enjoyed it more than I expected. I love the theme and overall message. Some of the story got quite angsty which might resonate better with the target audience. Overall a good read. I could see it being a cheesy movie or show. 1y
Cazxxx I enjoyed it. I love anything with magic and witches lol. I liked the elemental magic but I did find it a little too YA in parts. Overall it was a nice witchy read and good as an audiobook! 1y

TheBookHippie @Cazxxx it was a nice October read for sure! 1y
mcctrish I love @AmyG “it wasn‘t terrible” 🤣😘 I kept wanting it to be more ( and yes, what happened to her parents?) but I did enjoy it for a number of things, witches, magic, the climate connection. I‘m not a horror fan so this is my October read jam. I did really love the cover 1y
DanaManiac I wish there was more info on her parents. It was a good book overall. Also, I‘m definitely a summer. What about everyone else?? 1y
TheBookHippie @DanaManiac oh gosh I forgot to post that!!! Just a sec! 1y
DebinHawaii I liked it angst, 🧀 & all. I dabble in YA at times. so that doesn‘t bother me. It was a great October pick & got me some big WordSearch points for #Scarathon2022 too.🤗 I agree about more info on the parents & I also wanted more about Alice‘s life & what happened to her. 1y
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii I agree on the word search!! Jumped my points way up! 1y
BookwormAHN I definitely wanted more details on that. 1y
kspenmoll I enjoyed this book as I read it not from my point of view necessarily but what the how the teens work would embrace it 1y
kspenmoll Christine, as always your photos & graphics are gorgeous! 😘 1y
peanutnine I really enjoyed this. I read a lot of YA so the angst didn't bother me. Definitely wanted more backstory about the parents and Alice though 1y
TheBookHippie @kspenmoll ♥️🎃♥️ 1y
julieclair I enjoyed this book! Like @mcctrish , I'm not a horror fan, so something witchy works great for me as an October read. 1y
TheBookHippie @julieclair I so agree with that!!!! 1y
mollyrotondo I really liked this one. It was different from other witch stories I‘ve read. I thought the issues on climate change and witch powers were woven together very very well. I was very satisfied with this pick 😆 1y

Our Earth is tired let her rest.

I do like the climate change theme it‘s a little much at times but in my experience this is the top thing YA aged readers are concerned about if they‘re in activism.

Thoughts?

AmyG I think young people who are active ARE concerned about climate change. And also Roe vs Wade being overturned. (edited) 1y
TheBookHippie @AmyG agreed!! 1y
Sargar114 It‘s a great theme for YA since this mostly affects them. (Not that it doesn‘t have current effects; but this is the world we‘re leaving) 1y
See All 17 Comments
AllDebooks I don't usually read YA lit but this was good. The theme was contemporary and would hopefully reach more kids. The nature descriptions were exemplary. I enjoyed these the most. 1y
TheBookHippie @AllDebooks it will be such a joy in the English classroom -it‘s a great find, I liked the nature as well. 1y
mcctrish I think this is a great find in the YA genre! My therapist says her younger clients are seriously sick over the environment and really if I have days when I feel like I can‘t handle my lack of control over public education in Ontario god help them stressing over that GIANT problem 😢😢😢 1y
DanaManiac I think this was a great way to cover topics of interest in a way that many young people may find relatable without being “preachy” 1y
DebinHawaii The climate change problem was a good aspect of the book. @AllDebooks Yes, the nature descriptions & the quotes were all gorgeous writing & my favorite parts! 🍃🍂 (edited) 1y
DebinHawaii @TheBookHippie Gorgeous graphic too. You have been spot-on as usual for this book! 💜 1y
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii I love to do it, it‘s a lot of fun -I probably stress over it more than necessary ..😂. 1y
BookwormAHN I think part of the problem is that more young people are concerned than anyone else. 1y
TheBookHippie @BookwormAHN 💯💯💯💯 1y
kspenmoll Climate change is something teens worry about- 1y
julieclair Teens would definitely relate to the climate change theme. I think this theme gives the book an extra boost of relevance to their lives. 1y
mollyrotondo I loved the climate change story because it fit so perfectly with witches. Witches are connected to nature so why wouldn‘t they be of help to the climate change problem? And it is a good topic to hook kids as well. 1y

Was the magic possessive before or out of control? Is there a message love yourself you‘re all the magic you need?

Magic Dream Elixir she used it before she went to the eclipse.
Sang.
Nice love story? Too smultzy or just right for YA?

AmyG Sort of a coming-of-age witch story, I guess. Clara grew up, learned much about herself. Again, not a book for me. 1y
Sargar114 It was a nice YA romance. It‘d be nice to have her realize that without having a love interest…but since that was a big part of the story, it‘s fine. I don‘t think it takes away from the message of loving yourself. 1y
mcctrish @Sargar114 I agree, I was a bit ( I know I‘m repeating myself 🤣🤣) the boyfriend doesn‘t fix all the loss Clara has endured but I did like his character. Magical coming of age story is right @AmyG 1y
See All 9 Comments
DanaManiac @Sargar114 Yes, I agree. The story would have been great if she had friends or even herself a the source and inspiration. I wish the love part was more of a footnote. 1y
DebinHawaii Yes, a good YA romance/coming of age with overall good messages. The magic in the end reminded me slightly of a big undisciplined puppy with Labrador energy—it wanted to be close to people without recognizing its size & strength. The “reset” & Clara learning to control it was like getting it some obedience training. 🐶😆 1y
BookwormAHN It was a nice ya romance but if it hadn't been ya I think I would have liked it better. 1y
kspenmoll @DebinHawaii Your analogy made me laugh😂. YA coming of age & romancy. 1y
julieclair @DebinHawaii Perfect analogy! 😂 I think the romance was necessary, because Clara needed to learn that it was possible for her to have love in her life without her magic destroying it. 1y
mollyrotondo @DebinHawaii that was perfect! I thought about it similarly but definitely didn‘t know how to articulate it as well. I think Clara had loved and lost so many times at such a young age that a love story that actually worked was an important step for her. If she never loved and lost and needed Sang to help her love herself then it would have been problematic. 1y

This is your life you have to chose how you want to live it.
Word.
Best advice ever.
Clara‘s decision to stop yet another climate disaster?

The eclipse…
She was always going to end up there?
It reset her magic. Her eyes golden not bright blue?
Her actions made everyone stronger.
Lesson or trite?

Regarding activism -I always say all our pieces make a moving mosaic beautiful all together - same thing. ♥️

AmyG Climate change will only work if we all work together. (edited) 1y
Sargar114 What @AmyG said. Also a good lesson for life in general. 1y
Sargar114 It‘s interesting how instead of running away from her problems in this instance she ran towards them head on and when push came to shove (as we all kind of expected) she didn‘t really want to lose her magic or abilities as that was part of who she was and ultimately made her stronger. I think that was the bigger message versus the reset of her powers (which was a little stilly but meh YA) 1y
See All 15 Comments
TheBookHippie @Sargar114 Be who you are. And yes we all knew she was going to do it. The silly doesn‘t bother me in YA too much, but we know what happens in adult fiction … I throw the book 😂😱😵‍💫🤷🏻‍♀️ 1y
Sargar114 @TheBookHippie that‘s true! Lol! Yeah a little extra drama in YA is to be expected and sometimes the way to connect to teens 1y
mcctrish Great pic! It ended well and yes @Sargar114 it was a bit silly here‘s hoping the work together part resonates with the YA audience and not the hiding in the woods 1y
DanaManiac I do like that the eclipse resetting her magic also made everyone stronger ONLY because they are facing a disaster. Otherwise, it did feel a bit too gushy. I don‘t want Mr. Burrows to benefit 😂😂 1y
DebinHawaii @DanaManiac Hah! Same! I still have Burrows anger & issues. I‘d like Clara or someone to hit him in the nose again, just because he is still a giant asshat! 😆 1y
TheBookHippie @DanaManiac @DebinHawaii oh he needs a good comeuppance. 😂 1y
BookwormAHN @AmyG exactly 💯 1y
kspenmoll @DebinHawaii Yup, punch him in the nose again. Be who you are & embrace it is hard for teens who@are so attuned to their peers. 1y
julieclair Her actions making everyone stronger were good positive reinforcement for her that she had done the right thing. But yes, a bit on the trite side. Sigh... YA.... 1y
julieclair I thought the eye color change was interesting. Symbolic of the new person she had become, at peace with her magic. 1y
mollyrotondo We knew the eclipse was going to be a thing lol I‘m glad she walked into the mission instead of running away. And I‘m glad it was a reset for her because she needs this to show her how strong she is since she had so much doubt. I think it was a well done YA conclusion. 1y

Mr Harts wife, the book, the time he used of his life for her so Mr Heart?
Too on the nose?
He seems to be the only one who was on her side?
Was the wife angry you think?
Was Clara his life?

AmyG I just saw him as a very kind soul who truly cared about Clara. 1y
Sargar114 I don‘t think there‘s any way for Mrs Hart to know that Clara had a hand in his death so if she‘s angry it may be at the situation but not at her. She seems to be going through her own grieving process and probably came across these notes and rightfully thought they could be to good use and in a way honor her husband‘s memory. 1y
mcctrish She just seems kind. Mr Hart‘s notes just lead back to things I was saying sections ago, Clara isn‘t 8. She‘s almost an adult and the adults involved in her education and training need to involve her in what they are doing aka what they want her to do. Debrief after each class- what worked, what didn‘t, where should we take this, what did Alice say ( that‘s if her book hadn‘t been hidden) the fact that Clara will start writing shows she‘s 🤔 1y
See All 8 Comments
DebinHawaii I believe the wife was being kind; knowing how important Clara was to her husband & wanting her to have the notebook. 1y
BookwormAHN I also think the wife was being kind. 1y
kspenmoll I think the wife was being kind. 1y
julieclair I think the wife was being kind, and Mr. Hart was a fabulous, dedicated educator. 1y
mollyrotondo So I‘m on a Buffy the Vampire Slayer kick right now lol and Mr Hart reminds me of Giles. Sees Clara as a daughter and really wanted to find answers for her. I think his wife wanted to help too especially to honor her husband. 1y

#SUNDAYBUDDYREAD

Would you love me if I wasn‘t a witch?
Isn‘t that do you love me for me?
Not all love lasts forever.
Is this teaching YA readers of YA age good lessons/examples?

The wildflower field they make together
Swoon or gag
😂🙃🌹🌷🌻🌼🌸🌺🪷
Use your creative gifts to express emotions ?

AmyG I am not much of a YA fan. I skimmed this. Yes, it was sweet and romantic but not my jam. 1y
Sargar114 It doesn‘t seem like a terrible lesson. If being a witch were superficial things like looks, money, popularity etc then yeah it‘s important to care about a person for who not what they are. I liked the flower field, it was a unique spin on that part of the love story even if a little cheesy. 1y
mcctrish I liked the flower field and what each flower stood for but considering what Clara was saying ( would you love me if I wasn‘t a witch) and an eclipse was coming up, that is a cry for help. Paige did know what was going on and I do love her lack of filter sometimes. It wasn‘t happening on her watch. 1y
See All 12 Comments
TheBookHippie @mcctrish lack of filter is my middle name I think 😱🤦🏻‍♀️ so I agree …I loved her forthrightness! 1y
DanaManiac I think it‘s a good lesson, especially at a time in life where many are altering themselves to fit in. I did enjoy the flower field. It was cheesy, but that‘s my jam! 😂 1y
DebinHawaii I love the symbolism of flowers, so I liked the field & how they communicated(& sometimes I like a little 🧀) 😉 I believe we all want to be loved unconditionally by someone & for Clara with so many in her life wanting & *needing* her power when it was such a cause of so much pain & guilt & a burden to her, I can see why the question & need for being loved without it was so important to her. 1y
BookwormAHN Some of it was a little cheesy as ya's can be. 1y
kspenmoll Swoon loved the flower field & how they buried their feelings there & communicated their emotions thru plants. 1y
julieclair Do you love me for me - such a common question for teens to ask. I think it's good for them to have a positive example - Sang would love her even if her powers were stripped. And the flower field... I absolutely loved it! I am a hopeless romantic. 🌷🌸🌹🌺🌻 1y
TheBookHippie @julieclair ♥️♥️♥️♥️ 1y
mollyrotondo 😂 so the flower field was cheesy but also very witchy so I‘ll accept it 😂 I mean I believe communication is very important and if this was their best way of communicating while they sorted out their feelings then fine lol 1y
mollyrotondo I definitely thought this was a good way to show “love me for me”. Young people and adults too can worry if they are loved for who they are or for what they provide others. There are plenty of users out there of all ages. I think it was important for Clara and teens to know they are loved unconditionally. 1y

The pain of love is almost inverse to the joy of it.
Clara realising she cannot keep Sang safe from harm.
Isn‘t that all of us ?
Love hard because this all, it ends.
Difficult for everyone yes?

Was Sang what she needed or was it how he helped her be herself? Will readers see the difference ?

AmyG Like life itself, one can‘t dwell on what ifs. Same with love. I thought Sang heped Clara grow into herself. I think he was a turning point for her. 1y
Sargar114 Sang was a great balance for her. His calmness to her intensity. A good relationship isn‘t about what your similarities are, but about how your differences make each other better. Clara definitely had that with Sang. Love and life is hard and can hurt you, but Clara in her immaturity couldn‘t handle that and tried to run away not even letting the other person (Sang or Paige) have a say. (edited) 1y
TheBookHippie @Sargar114 😂 most people to Mr BookHippie and me, “We can‘t believe your married to each other and that you‘re married at all, you don‘t believe in it..” we‘re polar opposites in a lot of things and two different belief systems 🙃 so I agree with you. We‘re also together longer than the lives of people questioning us, so there is that. 🙃🙃🙃 (edited) 1y
See All 16 Comments
TheBookHippie @AmyG He definitely spurned her growth, his calm to her out of control. 1y
AllDebooks Sang really was a turning point @AmyG he really did bring balande to her life 1y
AllDebooks @TheBookHippie congratulations on your longevity beating the naysayers. Don't listen. I never understand the need to judge, instead of letting people be. X 1y
mcctrish Clara had a family, lost it, had a best friend, lost her, had a girlfriend, walked away from her, had a teacher and lost him. I think this is a level of loss and grief that is insurmountable individually. Since this is YA why is the message not getting help/support? Sang does care and his role is great, supportive, not judgemental, demonstrating risk taking but still …. 1y
TheBookHippie @mcctrish I imagine realistically the author must know kids don‘t seek it or agree to it, they don‘t trust it overall .. at least in the decades I‘ve experienced here. They prefer groups of same situation/experience which is of course help -but one on one is a hard sell. Sadly. 1y
TheBookHippie @mcctrish it was A LOT. Which is what I liked and appreciated. I know so many teens that will feel seen reading this. 1y
DanaManiac I think that Sang helped her grow into herself. I‘m glad that she had the space to come to the realization of her love for him. 1y
mcctrish That is very good news @TheBookHippie about being seen 🙏🏻 1y
DebinHawaii I think as a Spring, Sang‘s powers were nurturing & helping this grow & blossom & that translated into his relationship with Clara. Although she ultimately took a risk & found her own way through, his support & balance to her intensity helped her get there. Yin & yang. ☯️ 1y
kspenmoll Sang helped Clara so much. He clearly reached her with his belief in her & his Spring powers of nurturing. 1y
julieclair Clara is feeling all the teenage feels of the joy AND the pain of love. And unlike other teens, doing it with a power that can kill those she loves. What unbelievable pressure. She needed Sang's calming influence, which allowed her to settle enough to finally begin growing into her real self. 1y
mollyrotondo I see what you did there @TheBookHippie Will people read it as her needing a man to help her find herself? 😂 I think Sang and Paige near the end made her finally feel like she was more than just her power. They really didn‘t try to use her and they were the only ones alive in this story that saw her and not just her power. I think Sang was more the influence because Clara thought Paige blamed her for their friend‘s death. 1y
TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo 😂♥️✊🏼 1y

There‘s enough light for everyone.
Never let anyone feel about what you can do.

Good for adults as well as teens to remember?

Ring of fire
(I‘m old enough to sing Johnny Cash )🙃

What was Paige up to?
Or was it just fun?
What caused the lightening to go awry?
What do you think of Paige now?

AmyG I think Paige was mad and hurt by Clara. They‘re all teens. I get it. 1y
Sargar114 It just seemed like a dumb teenage game but with dangerous consequences. I don‘t think there was any ill intent by Clara or even Sang, they just wanted her to have fun. I was actually kind of angry at Clara for not trusting her instinct to participate…but I do get it finally getting to be involved can be real tough. 1y
mcctrish The game was a recipe for disaster, of course, because Clara felt she had control of her magic. But she still didn‘t respect it. 1y
See All 11 Comments
DanaManiac I think it was just supposed to be fun, especially since it seems like Clara was more fearful of hurting people she loved than they were fearful of being hurt by her. 1y
DebinHawaii I think it was meant to be fun with no I‘ll intent on Paige‘s part. It seemed like a silly thing teens would do, not thinking about the consequences which is pretty normal. I am good with Paige. I can understand her hurt & she ultimately helped Clara & pushed her to grow. 1y
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii I think it‘s a good way to show don‘t judge, you don‘t know what that person is thinking/feeling or gone through. It‘s a fun character. Teen angst is hard. 1y
BookwormAHN I wonder if Paige was trying to cause trouble for Clara and Sang or if she was just that irresponsible. 1y
kspenmoll I think it was fun; paige etc. did not expect ring to get out of control- as @DebinHawaii said, teens are impulsive, don‘t think@of consequences, their brains are developed enough. I think Paige‘s hurt ran deep but she also helped Clara by showing her belief in her. (edited) 1y
julieclair I think the ring of fire was a bit of typical teenage fun. Playing a potentially dangerous game without believing any harm would really come of it. Teens mostly believe they are invincible. 🦸‍♀️I don't think Paige had any ill intent. I did like the way Paige supported Clara in the end. Paige matured quite a bit from the beginning to the end of the book. 1y
mcctrish @julieclair she really did 1y
mollyrotondo For as much as I liked this book, having another moment for Clara to doubt herself was a bit frustrating lol but I like Paige and I don‘t think she was up to anything by suggesting they play. 1y

Good mornin! I was apparently tired I slept hours later than usual! 🙃😅

You are allowed to love yourself.
Think Clara hated who or what she was or that she was 🙃?
Is that one of the themes -as this is YA ? Love yourself.

AmyG I think she didn‘t want to be an Ever-with all the responsibility and power that came with it. She didn‘t choose this and fought it. 1y
Sargar114 I do think she struggled with “how she was born” and something she had no control of. Being a YA I can see how a teenager might relate to this message; don‘t necessarily love how it was ultimately resolved. But I did like the support she had on her journey to help her through and I think that would be important for a young person to see and make a point to look for in their own lives. 1y
AllDebooks I think it would be a difficult responsibility for anyone to deal with. She fought against it initially but acceptance brought her greater control and respect for her powers. Lots of positive messages for YA re acceptance of self, support networks and communication 1y
See All 10 Comments
mcctrish I don‘t think she thought she was worthy of love and everyone around her not knowing what to do with her and her powers just compounded that. Part of me wondered why she didn‘t have a friend in each season that she bonded with, thus creating a tribe 🤷🏻‍♀️ 1y
DanaManiac I do think she hated her power. I think that would be a normal feeling, given what happened to the people that she loved. 1y
DebinHawaii I agree with what has been said; she didn‘t love herself & feared & didn‘t want her power . Once she began to understand & accept it, she could finally begin to feel her self worth, begin to love herself & open herself up to others. 1y
BookwormAHN I think this was definitely a ya trope and one that has gotten a little old. 1y
kspenmoll Agree with @BookwormAHN this is a YA trope. That being said, she hated herself because her power killed those she loved. So she hated her power too. 1y
julieclair I think she resented her power, and was afraid of it, because of all the harm it had done. I liked the way her true friends kept emphasizing to her that it was the power that had done harm, and not she herself. 1y
mollyrotondo I think fear was controlling Clara. Her power killed her parents when she was so young that of course she would be afraid. But I feel like the adults in her life did not help in anyway. No one really knew what her power could do they instead just used her and made her feel like she had to be at everyone‘s service. But I think she finally learns to not be afraid and embrace her ability. 1y

Overall I enjoyed this audiobook although it was a little YA at times. The elemental magic was really cool and I liked the journey of the young mc as she navigates her world and figures things out

#OminousOctober
Finishing this up tonight for tomorrows #SundayBuddyRead discussion and came across this #dusk quote.

“The sun gives up her place in the sky, and dusk settles over the vast field with a heathered shade of blue that makes everything feel peaceful. “

Not particularly ominous but beautiful and evocative.

I really enjoyed this book. At times it could be a little too ya. The magic system was cool. Each witch has a designated season which they are strongest in controlling except Clara, she is an Everwitch & has power through all four seasons but she can't control it. I'm really looking forward to the #SundayBuddyRead discussion @TheBookHippie

So enjoyed this YA novel that combines the forces of nature & the power of magic. Witches are trying to get the attention of shaders(non witch humans)in hopes of making them see the dire consequences of climate change. Shaders need to change their ways & work with the witches to,if possible, reverse some of climate change‘s present & future effects. Our group discusses this tomorrow. #sundaybuddyread #outstandingoctober #20in4 #litsylovereads

Clara, the MC in this witchy YA novel, carries a lot of #guilt for the deaths of people she cares about that have resulted from her magical powers.

Looking forward to finishing this #SundayBuddyRead up this weekend. It‘s a good pick for #TeamMonsterMash points too. 🧙🏻‍♀️🪄✨🐈‍⬛👻🎃

A unique look at YA fantasy. Witches are sorted by the seasons and the type of power they have. Clara is a once in a generation witch called an Ever, someone who encompasses the powers of all the seasons. She is working to control this strong but dangerous power that has already affected her loved ones to try and help the world fight climate change. It gets quite angsty, but if you can put up with that, it‘s a worthwhile read. #sundaybuddyread

We get to finish!!!!!

What do you think now?

Next week we will say which witch we think we‘d be…

AmyG I think I am happy to just finish this book. 🤣 1y
TheBookHippie @AmyG 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 I‘m very excited for Novembers read! 1y
DanaManiac I‘m excited to see how it ends! I have a feeling we will end in Autumn so that she can see if her and Sang will make it! 🥰 1y
See All 10 Comments
Sargar114 Yay! I‘m with @AmyG It started strong but kinda started going downhill quickly. I love the concept of the weather control, but got real angsty. 1y
mcctrish I feel like it flips between being a compelling story and reverting back to standard YA. I think Sang is more than a run of the mill love interest. He isn‘t a school peer, he is older and has his passion. I think he will still be ‘it‘ for Clara 1y
TheBookHippie @mcctrish I agree with that synopsis ! 1y
DebinHawaii I am looking forward to hopefully having some of my unanswered questions about the parents & Alice answered. I think it‘s a good book for the season, but yes, I‘m excited for November‘s pick! 1y
mollyrotondo I have very much enjoyed this one. It did something different with witches that isn‘t focused on enough in stories. Everything was written very tightly. I do hope we learn more about Alice. But this was definitely a win for me lol 1y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I'm curious enough to finish, but I find this book just OK. The magic is very one dimensional and the weather theme seems a bit preachy. I either need a bit more about Alice and her magic or another sub-plot, maybe. I just feel like there's something missing. 1y
