The Nature of Witches | Rachel Griffin

I really enjoyed this book. At times it could be a little too ya. The magic system was cool. Each witch has a designated season which they are strongest in controlling except Clara, she is an Everwitch & has power through all four seasons but she can't control it. I'm really looking forward to the #SundayBuddyRead discussion @TheBookHippie

In case I need reminded, manga is really not my favorite reading genre, but I completely understand the appeal. Just not for me!

This is the first in the well known Sailor Moon series, so provides the background on the rise of Sailor Moon and her allies, plus the mysterious Tuxedo Mask. The illustrations are fun. #BBRC #TeenAngst #ShojoManga

TheBookHippie I can‘t do it. My niece loves it! 2mo
LibrarianRyan Ohh. Too bad. I love it but I grew up with it so it‘s a bit different for me. 2mo

Interesting adaptation of The Great Gatsby. The illustrations worked very well with the story, and though it‘s been years since I‘ve read the original novel, I think this edition captures the essence of the story. #TeenAngst #GraphicNovelVersionOfANovelAlreadyInExistence #BBRC

LibrarianRyan I think there were 2 different graphic novel editions done. I know I read one of them. i am glad you like it. 2mo

I loved the subject of this book, esp with its relevance for my daughter (there are a lot of dress code battles where we live), and the focus on intersectionality was fantastic. I just didn‘t like the writing in Ruby‘s chapter at all. Not sure if the dual author thing worked well in this one. I would have preferred the whole book from Malena‘s POV.

Told from the perspective of four young adults, this #historicalfiction novel chronicles the final days of WWII and the refugees fleeing the Russian advance. It‘s spellbinding, horrific, and deeply emotional. Sepetys has a way with words and the hook that keeps you reading. I loved this one. #LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead

Charlotte is stuck in NYC on Christmas Eve. As she waits for a flight home to England, she decides she wants to live a “Story.” Enter Anthony. Both have been unceremoniously dumped and decide to spend a crazy Christmas Eve having adventures in the city. For a short book, this took me forever to read. I probably would have appreciated it more if I were the age of the target audience. I did lots of eye rolling. 😂

This is the prequel for the Solo movie. In this Han and Qi'ra go on a job for Lady Proxima to get a data cube, which goes really wrong. They end up with the data cube and every one after them.

LibrarianRyan I wish I had liked that movie. That is what keeps me from reading this. 12mo
BookwormAHN @LibrarianRyan I admit it's grown on me. It just doesn't feel like a Star Wars movie. There's something missing in it 🤷🏼‍♀️ 12mo

Do you remember the age you were when you learned that America was not as perfect as you were raised to believe? I was in 6th grade when I learned that we had concentration camps for Americans of Japanese origins.

Bone Talk centers around three native children of the Philippines on the cusp of American Imperialism. What a great YA/MG book to learn about another culture that was ruined by Americans. Anger, guilt, sadness, fear will be felt.

Butterfinger @Chrissyreadit I think you will like this. 12mo
Butterfinger @Chrissyreadit if you can't find it, Candy Gourlay is a native Filipino so you may find one of hers. 12mo

I loved this book. It's set in Ethiopia where Andromeda is working her first job as a debtera, someone who cleanses houses of the evil eye. It was described as a Jane Eyre retelling but I didn't really see it that way.
Anyone doing the #ReadingAfrica2022 challenge might want to check it out.
