David Copperfield, Chapter 1. #readlong #buddyread with me (and @Ruthiella and whenever else wants to be tagged!)

What would tell a new author who brings you a manuscript that is written in the first person but describes things the narrator couldn‘t possibly know (like the circumstances of his own birth)?

More questions on Chapter One in the comments!

Yossarian David claims, despite being born late Friday night, he had never seen “Ghosts or Spirits.” But what about the elms who were “giants who were whispering secrets . . . tossing their arms about . . . too wicked for their peace of mind”? What about Mr. Chillip who walked “as softly as the ghost in Hamlet”? What about Miss Betsey Trotwood, who “vanished like a discontented fairy”? Does he see ghosts and spirits everywhere?
18h
Yossarian Miss Betsey Trotwood is presented as both a strong, independent woman who escaped from a horrible marriage and as a total asshole who abandons her family. Are we supposed to respect her or hate her?
18h
Yossarian David Copperfield, Sr., we learn, was “double my mother‘s age,” as mom was not yet twenty. What are we supposed to make of this age gap?
18h
See All 11 Comments
Yossarian Pegotty and Mrs. Copperfield have the same Christian name, but what is it?
18h
Yossarian Anything else you want to talk about? The caul auction? “Handsome is that handsome does”? The 105 pound residual annuity? There‘s a lot here for 11 pages! 18h
Ruthiella I‘ll get back to you asap! I‘ve yet to read the first page! I‘ve not read it, but I know Tristam Shandy also starts with the protagonist‘s birth which he couldn‘t possibly know. Also note that allegedly David Copperfield is Dickens‘ most autobiographical novels. Interesting how the father was killed off early when IRL Dickens‘ father didn‘t die but was rather feckless and unsuccessful. 16h
Yossarian @Ruthiella I try to avoid playing Freud, although killing your father in literature seems like a relatively safer manifestation of an Oedipal complex. 13h
Ruthiella Dickens is one of the few authors where I do know a bit about his personal life. And I‘ve read this book before, so I have the benefit of knowing what‘s coming (vaguely) - in this case the step-father. (edited) 9h
Ruthiella Speaking of which, the age gap between the parents, while not uncommon for the era allows for (i) a natural death of the father and (ii) the mother to be young enough to remarry and bear more children. 9h
Yossarian @Ruthiella I got “double her age” and “not yet twenty,” so at the oldest they were married at 19 and 38 and he died at 39. I don‘t know what was considered a “natural death” back then, but I know Dickens believed into spontaneous human combustion in Bleak House, so his biology may have needed some refreshing. 8h
Yossarian As for step-fathers, I‘m starting to get that idea from Chapter 2. 8h

If anyone cares to join me as a #readalong or #buddyread, I just picked up David Copperfield, which I have never read before (although I‘ve read and liked other Dickens) and plan to read a chapter a day for 64 days in preparation for Kingsolver‘s Demon Copperhead, which is supposed to be based on it and comes out in about two months.

Join me!

Ruthiella When are you starting? I‘d love to reread David Copperfield! 1d
Yossarian I just read Chapter One today and I‘m going to post about it tomorrow! Jump on whenever you can. I‘m a slow reader! 1d

My current #audiobook

I figured to get through this chunkster of a classic that I should listen to it. Glad to hear Simon Vance was the narrator!!!

Eight years ago I tried reading this book and only got like 50 pages in. Now I feel I‘ll be able to finish it.

Ruthiella Simon Vance is such a great narrator! 👍 2mo
CrowCAH @Ruthiella agree! He does a great job with the Temeraire series, the Aubrey/Maturin series, and the Dune original six books!!! Plus many others, but those are some I‘ve listened to. 2mo

The ugliest edition of David Copperfield ever. But I finally finished last week after 41 hours of reading over three months. Only my second Dickens and I‘m really happy to have it read. Too much to sum here. But it felt very personal, also an author in complete control. A zillion iconic characters, always entertaining.

GingerAntics That is a very odd cover art choice for David Copperfield. 4mo
Graywacke @GingerAntics 1981 design 🙂 4mo
Texreader My Audio stopped at chapter 18. 😒 I‘m looking forward to finishing it someday. And I agree about that cover. 🤨 4mo

Graywacke @Texreader i saw your post on that and was hoping you had a fix. Big bummer. 4mo
Graywacke @GingerAntics at least it hasn‘t age well. 4mo
GingerAntics @Graywacke it would be weird if one day it became a popular edition because the cover was suddenly great. lol 4mo

Help needed! I‘m using the Apple Books app to listen to this audiobook but it‘s just stopped. Nothing has worked to get it going again. And I could find no support from Apple. This is the first time I‘ve used the app. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get the audio up and running?

Awk_Word_Smith Are you on an Apple or Android device? I‘m more familiar with Apple. 5mo
Awk_Word_Smith @Texreader There‘s a couple of things to try. It may be a space issue. If your phone is nearly full, deleting data could correct the issue. It may be an app cache issue, in which case the only way to get rid of app cache is to delete the app and reinstall it. 5mo
Texreader @Awk_Word_Smith I‘ll bet it‘s space. Ok. I‘ll work on that. Thanks a million!!! I‘ll let you know if it works 5mo

#Two4Tuesday on Wednesday…

1. Yes, I usually have one or two that I slowly read throughout the year.
2. Tagged. I‘ve read several Dickens, but have never gotten to this one.

Thanks for the tag @Eggs

#twofortuesday Thanks @TheSpineView for the tag!

1) Yes but I tend to be skeptical. So many are boring (such as Turn of the Screw) or written in archaic dense language. But when I love them, I really love them (❤️ Dracula and Dickens‘ Christmas Carol, for example). I‘m currently reading 2 classics, tagged and Roots.

2) I read Evangeline by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow in middle school, I think, and I loved it. I want to read it again someday.

#sharreadreadathon wrap-up In loving memory RIP

David Copperfield has arrived at Salem House to attend school in London. He is befuddled and embarrassed at having to wear a placard that reads:

“TAKE CARE OF HIM. HE BITES.”

Dickens is a brilliant writer (his subtle social commentary is priceless), and I continue to love his humor.

5⭐️ The famous opening paragraph sold this novel to me, and I‘m not disappointed. I love the plot and the mix of characters; the inserted humour in bleak narratives is something that only a masterful writer like Dickens could produce effortlessly. Afterall, this is Dickens‘ favorite child 😻 I wonder how much truth is reflected in this story.

Reading update 1 for the #sharreadreadathon:

I‘m glad I started this one today. It‘s humorous, which I need given the mostly bleak topics I‘m otherwise reading. Also, I am sort of doing a #buddylisten with my daughter @arielmonsen She‘s busy at college and I go back to work tomorrow. It‘ll be a long read.

I‘ve not listened much yet. Aunt Betsy is insisting that David Copperfield is going to be born a girl. #chunksterchallenge2022

I can't believe it's the last day of January!! On the right is my ongoing #BookSpin list for the year comprised of some classics/random books I've been meaning to read but never actually pick up. I'm still plugging away through the tagged book, which was January's pick, and at a chapter-a-day should finish sometime in February. Catch-22 replaces Copperfield in slot 8. On the left is the list I'll use for my Bingo board, comprised of my February ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) TBR/“assignments,“ including a space for whatever book gets picked from the list on the right 😂 Like most of my life, it sounds more complicated than it actually is LOL

Still plenty of time to make up February lists!! The numbers will be drawn Wednesday morning. And as a reminder, I'm not tracking books for the end-of-the-year giveaway - if you want to participate in that aspect, you will need to keep track of your own completion/DNFs⬇
7mo
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) and submit them via the Google form. You can update that form as you go along, or all at once at the end of the year, whatever works for you!! The link is here - https://forms.gle/X57ePKzuHpsqLjE5A

You all have read some fantastic (and not-so-great 😆) books this month!!! I love to see it!! I'll be back on the 2nd with February's numbers!!!

I saw that @rockpools had an “Almost a Chunkster“ category on her #BookSpin list and it inspired me to spontaneously create a new 2022 challenge! 😂 I have SO MANY books of this length on my TBR! One of my big goals for this year is knock some of these little-loved mid-range books off my list. They aren't quick & snappy like short books & they don't come with the feeling of accomplishment of their longer brethren - so I'm here to create a space ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) to celebrate those almost-a-chunksters!! Feel free to join in and tag me as you read/finish books of this size. I'm going to try and get through at least 15 of them this year!! Let's give those slightly-longer-than-comfortable books some love!! 😆

David Copperfield, master of relatable chapter titles 😂

Also, I'm not sure how old my specific edition is as I can't find a date anywhere, but I do know that Ethel owned it in 1900, so it's at least 122 years old - which is honestly kind of crazy!! While I have come to appreciate the convenience of ebooks, there is still something so magical about reading a physical book that has been handled, read, loved (& possibly hated haha) for over ⬇

31 Mar - 12 Apr 2021 (audiobook)
Dickens is, of course, a great writer...BUT I really detested so many of these characters: Dora was an annoying twit; David‘s mother was weak and conceited; Aunt Betsy was completely nuts; Heep was a caricature of a villain; and David himself was quite obtuse. Only Agnes, Trattles and the Peggottys had any real sense. The narration made Uriah Heep more cringeworthy, although Armitage was otherwise very good

I love Dickens in all his loquacious glory, so of course I loved this! We get the full range of Dickens‘ artistry with the English language, a wide array of memorable characters, and a healthy dose of Dickens‘ insightful social commentary. Since this is a first person narrative, it isn‘t as overt as in his other novels, but it is there. ⬇️

CindyMyLifeIsLit I felt a thrill on seeing Uriah Heep‘s name—it‘s familiar through countless allusions, but this was my first meeting with that unctuous dastard! David‘s taste in women leaves something to be desired (not a fan of dimwit Dora!), but other than that—highly recommended! 2y

Whether I shall turn out to be the hero of my own life, or whether that station will be held by anybody else, these pages must show. To begin my life with the beginning of my life, I record that I was born (as I have been informed and believe) on a Friday, at twelve o‘clock at night.

I included the second sentence as well, just because it is so well-known!

Dickens does a great job grasping the reader into the story but the mid section of the book tends to lag a bit and could have been more concise. At times I found myself putting the novel down to take a break from the conglomeration of wordiness in the story. It was all worth it in the end though as Dickens does an articulate job recalling the earlier pieces of the book and bringing the past and future in unison together.

282Mikado Although I am a bit more critical of the "wordiness", yours is a good review. 2y

Probably my favorite book of all time and one I‘ve read more than any other. It‘s been almost 20 years since I last read it, so it felt like a good time. I had forgotten about so many little things! Such wonderful characters in this book!

#MagicalMay #Babies

I‘m reading DC, so I immediately thought of Mrs. Micawber. “He presented me to Mrs. Micawber, a thin and faded lady, not at all young, who was sitting in the parlor . . . with a baby at her breast. This baby was one of twins; and I may remark here that I hardly ever, in all my experience of the family, saw both the twins detached from Mrs. Micawber at the same time. One of them was always taking refreshment” (142). 😂

#7days7books Day 3

Presenting books that changed me or left a deep impression on me

AvidReader25 My favorite Dickens! 2y
nanuska_153 @AvidReader25 I love both Tale of Two Cities and David Copperfield, but I felt a real connection with David Copperfield, I was heartbroken when I finished the book because I felt like I was losing a friend 2y
AvidReader25 @nanuska_153 It did! I need to reread it soon. 2y
nanuska_153 @AvidReader25 same here, wanted to reread it this year but I'm very unsuccessfully trying to reduce the amount of books on my TBR pile and don't know if I'll be able to do many rereads this year. Maybe if I manage to stop buying books for a couple of months 😅 2y
