Oh my! This fresh spin on a murder mystery was so much fun! Finlay Donovan is down to earth, smart, and relatable. I found myself rooting for her from page one. Fast, action packed, and funny dark comedy/mystery with a touch of romance and a large serving of grrl power. I‘m starting book 2 today!

I almost ditched this mystery twice, but I am glad I kept going. The ending had me wanting to read the next in the series. Finlay is a single mom and struggling author who is mistaken for a hired killer. Twice the plot became so implausible that I came close to not finishing. I enjoyed the characters and the madcap tone, so I kept going. This is great fun as long as you can suspend your disbelief.

KathyWheeler I had an issue with the implausibility of it too but decided to just go with it. Both books were a lot of fun. (edited) 1mo

A solid fast paced crime and women lead story. What a ride!! It had it all with sophisticated plot twists with a back drop of a down to earth Finely Donavan, a a regular mother/gilded wife/reliable friend/romantic partner who is struggling as a new single mom and author. The cheeky approach to regular life and a surprising series of adventures kept this plot racing. Easy to read and engaging.

OMG, y‘all this book is so good. Finlay is a character all moms will totally relate to I swear. A struggling writer, newly divorced and behind on her deadline. She meets with her agent and one misunderstood conversation later, Finlay finds herself as a contract killer. With laughs and quirky characters aplenty this is a read I‘m glad I picked up. Off to read the next book in this series. #springread #impulseread

This book has an outlandish plot, but a likable MC and an ancillary character (ex-husband‘s girlfriend) you love to hate makes this an enjoyable listen. I honestly wasn‘t sure about reading book #2 and then there was the Epilogue. What a great hook for the next book! I‘m all in!!!

Oh, this was a nice distraction! A zany misadventure with a recently divorced mom of young children “killing it” in more than one way! I can see why this is getting so much love and I‘m glad I gave it a go even though the description didn‘t really appeal to me. I see the comparisons to the Stephanie Plum series and though that‘s not my jam, this one worked for me! There seems to be more meat here and I can see it being a movie.

This book is so much fun! It's certainly not probable (almost in the vein of a slapstick Melissa McCarthy-style action/comedy movie). Mistaken identity meets murder for hire with a comedic twist. My advice would be to just suspend disbelief and enjoy 😂

I‘m in a funk.

There‘s a position at work that‘s come available that I NEVER thought would be open. It‘s a dream. And I‘m not eligible for it. I‘m processing it as a loss, going through the stages of grief.

With all of the excitement of the blizzard we‘re getting this weekend, I should be filled with complicated (yet suppressed) New England glee! Such a shame. All this to say: I‘m setting down my current (tagged) read. I need pure escapism.

monalyisha Also, I‘m sorry if I‘ve been a rather absent #NYWD host this past week! I know I say that it should run itself after the matches are announced — and it does! — but I prefer to check-in more & be more engaged. I‘m just tapped. You‘re all fabulous, model participants! ✨ 5mo
Soubhiville Sending hugs. It‘s hard to see something you want just out of reach. 5mo
Amiable Is it a position that you could be eligible for a few years down the road? Something to look forward to in the future? Sometimes that helps with the feeling of loss right now. 5mo
See All 35 Comments
squirrelbrain Ugh, that‘s so frustrating. 🤗 Hugs 🤗 5mo
RaeLovesToRead Sorry to hear that 😔 Really hope you feel better soon and can enjoy some reading escapism 💕 5mo
DGRachel I‘m so sorry. I hope you are able to find some good escapism. {{hugs}} 5mo
monalyisha @Amiable Maybe! It would depend on if the person who fills it leaves. And on whether I truly need my Master‘s to be eligible. I have *feelings* about the degree, about classist barriers, about a lot of things. I started going back to school & was miserable. I took 3 classes, aced them all, & was wildly unimpressed. I was receiving tuition reimbursement through previous employment, which isn‘t an option anymore. I‘m upset personally & societally. 5mo
monalyisha Thanks, @Soubhiville. That *is* the crux of it. It‘s true what they say: reading really does build empathy! 😅 And the reasons it‘s just out of reach feel so false & artificially constructed. I *know* I‘d be great. 5mo
monalyisha Thanks, @squirrelbrain, @RaeLovesToRead, @DGRachel! Just having a hard time getting to that “acceptance” point. 5mo
wanderinglynn Is it only the requirement for a masters degree that makes you not eligible? That‘s super frustrating. Is there any way you could market your experience in lieu of a masters? I see that a lot in job notices. I would think if you‘re an internal candidate, they would want you. I say apply & show your interest. The worst they say is no but at least they will know of your interest. I‘m rooting for you! And sending hugs for the frustration. 5mo
DGRachel I understand the grief and frustration of not having the “right” degree and having experience ignored. I applied for a job a few years ago with a company whose mission was amazing, only to have the CFO tell me, it‘s truly amazing what you‘ve accomplished without this specific degree, but no one here has the time to fill in your knowledge gaps (as if I‘d known their specific procedures if only I‘d gotten a finance degree 20 yrs ago. 🥺 5mo
DGRachel Anywho…this isn‘t about me - just I understand. Grieve. Be sad. Be angry. But don‘t let it define your worth and as clichéd as is sounds, if it‘s meant for you, it will be for you. I agree with “apply anyway”. The worst they can say is no (and I hate no), but you‘ll never know if you don‘t try. Sending love and hugs. 5mo
monalyisha Thanks, @wanderinglynn & @DGRachel! And I‘m sorry & grateful to hear about your particular experience, Rachel. It‘s not just about the degree, Lynn. But it‘s a huge factor. It‘s a lot to explain. 😅 I‘m a part of the interviewing process. And selection process. I was just promoted to Youth Services Specialist & Young Adult Coordinator. I was told that if my new position had already existed, it would have req‘d a degree…but they created it FOR me. 5mo
monalyisha @wanderinglynn Now, the Children‘s Librarian position is unexpectedly open. Our Director is retiring so there‘s some shifting taking place. The current Children‘s Librarian is moving on to become our Assistant Director. I didn‘t think she‘d ever leave her current position. She lives in town. She has young kids. And she LOVES being the Children‘s Librarian. But this admin position was offered to her, & she‘s a single mom. So, she accepted. (edited) 5mo
monalyisha @wanderinglynn The new person won‘t be my supervisor (though the current Children‘s Librarian was; she‘s staying on as Head of the Department). And I saw in the job posting that the person will only be making $2 more per hour than what I make. But I can‘t have that job because it‘s degreed. Though it‘s my dream. Teen Services are valuable & I‘m gonna rock it…but it‘s not my forte. I‘d rather be the Children‘s Librarian & not have my duties split. (edited) 5mo
monalyisha @wanderinglynn But I‘ve explicitly been told that I‘m not eligible because it‘s a degreed position. Yesterday, I was handed a few applications of note. 3/4 don‘t have their degrees. 2 are working toward it. 1 has it. 1 has a few years experience AS a Children‘s Librarian without it. So, she has experience in areas where I‘m just learning the ropes with my new promotion (budgeting for a department, collection development). 5mo
monalyisha @wanderinglynn I just expected the candidates to be MUCH more qualified than I am…not just marginally. It stings. I need to find out if the experience I‘m gaining now will be enough if the position opens again in a few years or if I really need that degree. The candidates who are working toward the degree? I don‘t consider them better fits than I would be. They‘re still going to have to learn the skills I‘d have to learn. & I have 14 years of exp. (edited) 5mo
monalyisha @wanderinglynn Anyway, I know they love, & respect, & value me but there‘s also some academic elitism going on, & it sucks. …I‘m glad I‘m a part of the interview process. The new person & I are going to be working closely in tandem. And I‘m grateful to have been included. But it‘s hard when I would have taken the job for myself. I‘m finding it very difficult. (edited) 5mo
monalyisha @wanderinglynn I also suspect that a small part of them not wanting to consider me is BECAUSE they just created this new position for me. (I was FT Circ when I was hired a couple of years ago, though most of my previous decade+ library experience was in Children‘s. When I started here, Children‘s was a dept of 1; they MADE room for me in the dept. that didn‘t exist b/c I‘m *good* at what I do). I think they‘re like, “We reorganized our structure.” (edited) 5mo
monalyisha @wanderinglynn “We had to petition the board. It would be too hard to change, to rewind what we‘ve done.” It‘s obviously not the whole story…but I think it‘s a factor. And though, again, I‘m grateful that the restructuring happened *for me* in the first place…it does feel unfair that it would be a(n unspoken) factor now. I think a lot of this is bad timing. 5mo
DaveGreen7777 Awww, I‘m sorry you weren‘t eligible. ☹️ Hope things start falling in place for you better soon! 5mo
RebL I work in an academic setting & had a similar experience in 2021. Yes to all you say here. It‘s okay, you‘ll be okay, & it sucks. 5mo
monalyisha @RebL It‘s comforting - and sad! again, rage against the machine! - to hear that I‘m not alone. 5mo
shortsarahrose That really sucks 😕 I know it probably wouldn‘t change anything, but if you have a good relationship with your boss, it might be worth taking to them about how you feel. I know - easier said then done. The librarian position I want at my current library has been vacant for a year (early retirement) and I‘ve been anxiously waiting to see if I‘ll be eligible to apply if/when they decide to hire someone to fill it 😬 5mo
sarahbellum As a fellow librarian, I really feel you and understand your situation. I managed to get promoted after an unexpected reorg a few years into my job. Never thought it was going to happen before that. If this sudden opportunity can happen once, it can happen again and hopefully when your circumstances better align. Being part of the search committee is a huge advantage you can use in the future! Sending virtual hugs and good thoughts your way 💖 5mo
monalyisha @shortsarahrose Fingers crossed for you! I‘m definitely going to talk to my director. She‘s been a huge advocate for me & I‘m sorry that she‘s leaving (though she FULLY deserves her retirement!). I don‘t want to appear ungrateful for what she‘s done for me thus far, and I have a lot of conflicting feelings…but I think I need to be upfront (as I‘ve been up until now) & I need to know what‘s what for the future. 5mo
monalyisha @sarahbellum Thank you! I think my biggest fear is that it *won‘t* happen again — that this is the singular shot & I‘m not ready. It‘s a great place & I‘m afraid whoever they hire will see it as the same shining jewel that I do & never want to leave. If they‘re vastly more qualified than I am, fine. I hate it - 😅 - but so be it. If they‘re *a smidge* more qualified than me (or just more wealthy?)…that‘s a hard thing to be fine with. 5mo
monalyisha @sarahbellum And congrats on your professional success! ✨ I‘ve really felt seen & valued up until this point, & have been getting promotions & raises to match — but I also started below my qualifications and skill level. So, oof. It‘s a lot. 5mo
sarahbellum A scarcity mindset will have us convinced that there‘s only one shot or one way, but with the director retiring, there will be a lot of moving parts for awhile and it‘s so hard to say what your library and job will look like even 6 months from now. I‘m so glad to hear you feel valued at work and I hope that continues! Oof is right! Careers are a marathon and not a sprint 😅 5mo
sarahbellum And thank you! I‘m the head of collection development at a medical library. My position isn‘t perfect (they never are!) and there‘s lots of room for growth, but it‘s really satisfying to see professional progress 5mo
MeganAnn Adding my hugs to those above. Hope you find some great escapist reads that help. 💖 5mo
wanderinglynn Thank you for sharing. That was helpful in understanding. I think it‘s a positive sign they‘re including you in the interview process. They clearly value you. And I second @sarahbellum – you never know what will happen in the future. Keep being awesome & open and you will find other amazing opportunities. Sometimes when I‘ve lost out on a job I really wanted, something even more awesome that I didn‘t expect happened. {hugs} 💜 5mo
Chelsea.Poole Oh wow this is tough. Glad you shared it with us. I can definitely understand how you are in a bit of a situation between feeling grateful for what you have and knowing your dream job (that you‘d be perfect for!) is right there! It sounds like you‘re valued at your library and maybe they need to know your feelings about the position. If nothing else, for your own peace of mind, knowing you put it all out on the table. 5mo
monalyisha @Chelsea.Poole @wanderinflynn Thanks for listening! I‘m glad I shared it, too. Writing it out has definitely helped me to process, & think about my next step(s). (edited) 5mo
Amiable @monalyisha I totally get it. I'm offended right there with you. My job requires a master's degree. Which I have. But it's in something that is totally not related in any way, shape or form to the job itself. And I got it nearly 30 years ago, so the technical skills I learned then are not even relevant anymore. But it didn't matter. I just needed “a“ master's. I find that ridiculous. 5mo

I‘m trying to not show the same books I featured in my top 21. Here is my favorite read of April. This book was a lot of fun and great on audio.

I had trouble with this book. I listened to the story via audiobook. I did like the narrator, but didn‘t find any of the characters especially likable. I also didn‘t find the plot very believable. I kept listening out of curiosity to see what would happen at the end. I can‘t say the end was very surprising.
