Night of the Mannequins
Night of the Mannequins | Stephen Graham Jones
Stephen Graham Jones returns with Night of the Mannequins, a contemporary horror story where a teen prank goes very wrong and all hell breaks loose: is there a supernatural cause, a psychopath on the loose, or both? Praise for Night of the Mannequins Reading Stephen Graham Jones is like sitting in the corner of a bar with an old friend, and everyone quiets down the moment they start telling a story. Night of the Mannequins is dark and twisted, funny, a little crazy, and unsettling as hell. The opening setup gets way under your skin, and then Jones takes the story somewhere much darker than you imagined. If theres an heir apparent to the kind of no-rules, wild imagination, down home storytelling perfected by Joe R. Lansdale, its this guy right here. Read him.Christopher Golden "Sly, surprising psychic sleight-of-hand, in a tale of teenage madness where the next plastic face might be your own."John Skipp "Wicked and wry, this is a terrific story by one of my favorite writers, Stephen Graham Jones. Tip-top with a twist of dead. The narrator's first person delivery is the most notable aspect of this surprising and creepy tale that nods to popular stalker-killer films of the past, but is so much better than the bulk of those films, and what an ending. You definitely need this."Joe R. Lansdale "Stephen Graham Jones' has one of the most gripping, stream-of-consciousness voices in horror fiction. Night of the Mannequins is propulsive and poignant, capturing the mundane terror of adolescence, and adding that ever-so-essential dab of killer mannequin. You won't put it down." A group of teens finds a mannequin and decides to use it for a prank. The aftermath goes sideways to dark and unexpected places. I really liked that I didn‘t see where this novella was going. It was an entertaining, quick read. #ReadYourEbooks

Ok so to be perfectly honest I wasn't paying enough attention to the first couple of chapters, which i realize now was a big mistake lol. Because halfway through I was like, wait...what just happened?! But kept trucking along because it's only a 3 hour long audio so figured it'd all wrap itself up soon. And it did...so...SPOILER: This book is not actually about mannequins 😂

Enjoyable weird short read. Sawyer & his friends pull a harmless prank (maybe involving said mannequin) on a movie theater attendant who‘s caught them sneaking in unpaid.

As things go it‘s not so harmless and then the story takes off on how they can fix the situation … it lost me for a second … it got me back in the end & even had a laugh or two.

A good choice for a quick Halloween book!!

⭐️⭐️⭐️3/4

1. Do taffy apples count because they are my absolute favorite treat this time of year. Otherwise, I‘m a big fan of peanut butter cups.

2. A favorite spooky read is the tagged novella which surprised me in all sorts of ways (and I don‘t want to say more because no spoilers). Can‘t go wrong with Gaiman‘s The Graveyard Book or Coraline (which is a delightfully creepy read) either.

@TheSpineView

This unfortunately was a no for me. It did reel me in for a little bit, that's the reason it's not getting 1 star. But I felt like it just went down hill. Fast. I was trying not to scream WHY everytime the main character would do something. And I thought the whole thing was obvious. 2/5

Non-mustache-twirling villain monologue? Messed up yet calculating kid navigating fantasy and reality while sublimating fear of loss of social group? Another in the many horror works scapegoating mental illness for murderous tendencies? It's the final girl nod that actually leaves me with the most questions. Definitely not what I thought it would be, but then, I didn't read the back cover. 🤦🏼‍♂️ Small town Texas still scares me all by itself.

This little novella was so interesting and well written. It‘s not that spooky, but what kept me turning pages was the mystery, anecdotes, and the slow reveal of the narrators reliably. For that last reason, it kind of reminded me of the yellow wallpaper, but completely different subjects though.

Overall, a very interesting exercise in writing a different type of narrative, well done.

This is a must read for fans of horror! It‘s dark, it‘s brutal, and it certainly makes you question things! But the biggest question of all you‘ll be asking yourself is, can I trust my friends?

Jones is often hit or miss for me, but this story was excellent!

It's creepy in its own unique way and the use of the mannequins really kept me on edge and hearing things go bump in the night while I was reading it.

It's a short read that I recommend if you want a quick read that will leave you feeling a bit unsettled once you finish.

One weird book about the horror of obsession and a mind out of control. The author weaves a tale of slow self destruction and insanity but leaves just enough room to get you to think maybe everything that is said to be false is actually real.

I wasn't on Litsy this weekend, so posting late:
1) The Stand. It's in my top 5 King. Nobody does epic horror like King.
2) Shanna was the first to go. And by "go" I mean die. And by "die" I mean get killed
As I have stated my unpopular opinion before, Night of the Mannequins was THE Stephen G Jones book of last year. I am also genuinely pleased by all of the new readers that The Only Good Indians converted. #spookysaturday @TheNeverendingTBR

Suet624 And by killed I mean sayonara. 3y

TheNeverendingTBR @vivastory I don't know, I've not decided yet; I prefer my own vision of it and I don't want it tainted by a bad series (if that makes sense) 😝 3y
TheNeverendingTBR @vivastory Same goes for The Dark Tower, I'm glad I never watched that! 3y
vivastory @TheNeverendingTBR That completely makes sense. I think that most books could be adapted with the right budget/creative team, but I think Dark Tower is one series that just can't be adapted. 3y
TheNeverendingTBR @vivastory is have preferred The Dark Tower to be a series and like season one would be The Gunslinger, season two would be The Drawing of the Three and so on.. (also..better casting!!) 3y
vivastory @TheNeverendingTBR That's a good idea! When hbo was looking for material to adapt as their next big sff series after Game of Thrones really caught on, I remember a lot of rumors about Dark Tower. As much as I love what I have seen of West World (I've only watched season 1) I can't help but feel there's a lot of truth to the rumors. 3y
Reggie I agree with your hot take. 3y
vivastory @Reggie Have you read his other novella 3y
Reggie @vivastory I have not. I have that and Final girls just hanging around in my kindle waiting for me. 3y
vivastory @Reggie I haven't read Final Girls, but you're in for a treat with Mapping. Speaking of Final Girls, I was looking at an article of 2021 horror releases & they mentioned Hendrix's next one Final Girls Support Group 3y
Reggie @vivastory hopefully it is the book I expected from Riley Sager‘s title. Yeah, I heard about it and was excited. He hasn‘t failed me yet. And I think you‘ve pointed it out but a lot of male horror writers have been writing some great female characters the past couple years. Not to pat their backs too much but it‘s been nice. 3y

Another novella that went in a completely different direction than I thought it would. Although it‘s strange, there‘s something compelling about this given how short it is. I enjoyed my time reading this even though I was staring at the page wondering if I was reading what I was truly reading at times. Unreliable narrator, a rouge mannequin and murder. How could you go wrong with that?

The main reason for the lukewarm rating is that I really loved some of the author‘s other work and was expecting something more and/or quite different here. That‘s the downside of having lofty expectations going into a book. It took me a very long time to get into this story, but I have to admit the last chapter or two grabbed my attention. If you love slasher movies and stories, you‘ll probably enjoy this story.

Reggie Funny, that‘s how I felt about his new book, The Only Good Indians. It was good but I‘m used to him being stellar. 4y
Andrew65 Well done 👏👏👏 4y
JoeMo @Reggie that‘s one of the things I find interesting about Jones...there‘s heavy disagreement among his fans about his work to include which of his titles are terrible vs good vs great. To me it may be a sign there‘s some more variety in his work compared to many writers. Sometime soon I plan to read Mapping the Interior which seems to be another title that people either love or find boring as heck! 😂 4y

Hoping to start this off tonight as a good way to start off #scarathlon2020 with a short story. Hoping this counts for 15 but might only be worth 5. EDIT: +15 points for book if I read it and 1 point for participation. #teamharkness #screamathon

Addison_Reads If the short story is horror, vampires, monsters, witches, ghosts, zombies, etc...then it counts for 15 for each story that you read. For instance I'm currently reading a short story collection with 11 stories that fit our team themes, so when I finish the book it will be worth 15pts x 11= 165pts. Plus don't forget you get 1pt for each post. #TeamHarkness for the win 🎉 @StayCurious #Scarathon2020 4y
BookishGirl06 @Addison_Reads not sure it‘s any of those but I‘ll finish reading and then decide. (edited) 4y

BookishGirl06 @Addison_Reads I‘m hoping it‘s good. I feel like it might fit supernatural or paranormal. (edited) 4y
Addison_Reads @BookishGirl06 from what I understand as long as it fits one of our themes it counts as 15. If it's more mystery/thriller or true crime, then it's only 5 because that's the other teams themes. 4y
BookishGirl06 @Addison_Reads ah. Sorry if I‘m being annoying right now. I don‘t mean to be lol 4y

I'm not a contrarian. Honest, I'm not. But, my hot take of the year is that Night of the Mannequins is a better book than The Only Good Indian. I will say that I am genuinely delighted by the scores of new readers due to the success of TOGI. In Night of Mannequins a prank in a movie theater amongst HS friends backfires. Sawyer's good intentions for a solution soon spin out of control. I loved this one.

Reggie This is my hot take that I was too ashamed to say in my review of TOGI. He is better at the short form and novellas than at the novel. Even TOGI would have been better broken up. In every anthology he‘s been in this year his story was a stand out for me. Even my favorite book of his, Demon Theory is 3 novellas strung together.(brilliantly might I add.) 4y
vivastory @Reggie For some reason I didn't get a notification & didn't see this comment until just now. Embrace the hot take Reggie! 😂 In all seriousness, I agree. I loved Mongrels, but that was one novel stacked up against all of his other works. I completely agree that TOGI would have worked better as a book of linked stories. 4y

Have to say, Jones is officially one of my new favorite authors. This novella is a fantastic horror story—it‘s a fast read but that doesn‘t mean it‘s any less engrossing. Four friends decide to prank a friend so they bring a mannequin to a theatre where she works. Real funny, right? Yeah, well, it is until the mannequin wakes up & starts killing. Funny, tense, atmospheric...all the things. Great story, wonderful writing, & creepy mannequins.
