Christie is so good making the unexpected come to life! I thought I had it all figured out around 35% in… those red herrings.

There are little eggs hidden all throughout her book if you are perceptive enough to catch them. However, it wasn't until about the final 10 pages that I started really cluing in to who murdered Roger Ackroyd.

There is so much to enjoy in this book. Quick pacing and short chapters allow the narrative to flow and the read is relatively short. One might think of this as a downside, but Christie does a marvelous job at doling out information, keeping the reader totally engaged. The dialogue is an intelligent mix of serious conversation with witty banter. And the ending, while no longer a surprise, is amazing! #AgathaChristie #PushkinPress #NetGalley

A classic Agatha Christie book, and one of her early books starring Hercule Poirot, interestingly without Hastings at this side. An interesting story with quite a different ending. Definitely recommended.

This is literally the first time I've ever guessed the identity of a killer before reaching the end of a mystery novel (before I'd ever reached the middle, no less). It was a thing I intuited rather than deduced, so I guess I'm most like Caroline out of all the characters 😄 I trusted that Christie would find a way to make the conclusion fit the evidence, and by God she did. After so many other mystery books and shows that rely on obfuscation or..

The_Penniless_Author ..shaggy plotting to conceal what happened, it's such a treat to read an author who gives you every bit of information you need to solve the case, yet creates such an intricate plot that it seems impossible any of the characters could be guilty. She's still the gold standard all these years later.🪙 8mo

Great mystery all around the bush, but didn‘t leave me “wow!” This was an, oh so that‘s how it worked. Let alone I had trouble figuring the murderer because I didn‘t really believe any of them did it. It was so far open, all about truth you can verify. Which is why the closing left me confused. Yes, it makes sense when Poirot states it. The reason of murder is what got me most confused. The whole way of doing it was timed amazingly

Welp. Mind blown. Will not reveal the spoiler, but even when being told I would not guess who the murderer was I did not guess it. Even when it was revealed that said character has been lying about some things, I jokingly said to my boyfriend "I'm going to lose my mind if x is the killer, there's no way." Alas, mind lost. Thoroughly enjoyable and quotable book. The scene where Poirot is introduced is especially memorable.

Thanks for the tag @TheSpineView !!

1. I don't think books themselves have changed that much, but I have access to so many more of them than I used to, through interlibrary loan, ebooks, etc. so sometimes I do feel like the percentage of “good“ books I read is lower than when I was growing up. But also - maybe I'm just pickier?? 😂

I‘m not sure if this is my favorite Hercule Poirot mystery, but it is very good and rightfully makes it on to many ‘must read in your lifetime‘ lists. Agatha Christie is the master of mystery done right — the clues are all there but it‘s quite a strain on the ‘little grey cells‘ to figure out. I also love the humor Poirot adds, although apparently Christie herself did not care for him. 😆

This is almost certainly my favorite Christie novel so far. I won't go into detail about what was so fun about it because I don't think I could say anything without spoiling the solution to the mystery (I am not nearly as adept in my speech as M. Poirot), but I enjoyed this one so much, I'm considering looking up some of the Poirot mysteries I've always ignored on PBS.

Ruthiella The Poirot series starring David Suchet is impeccable . I highly recommend it! 😀 It‘s also fun to note where the script deviate and/or enhances the novel. 2y
