pickAs predicted, this worked because it wasn't REALLY about the wizards OR sports. I loved the tandem journeys of self-discovery Nutt and Glenda went on. Better treatment of 'sharp but homely' and 'dumb but pretty' trope compared to Maskerade, but still could have done without it. By contrast, a GOOD e.g. of prejudice hiding behind fairy tale monster trope turned on its head; individuals realizing their power and NOT abusing it.
Pffft. Every line better than the one before. 🤭 Though, admittedly these days I'd like to see more acceptance and understanding of the range of capabilities of beings who choose to wear make-up.

so-soThis one was a tough one for me to rate, there were parts I loved, and parts that bored me…sorry Pratchett. I loved Nutt, Glenda, Jules, Trev, Madam, and Pepe; I also liked the side parts about Ladyship and our favorite (and only) 😉dictator and the fashion business (which also isn‘t my thing)…. A little Cinderella, a bit of Cyrano de Bergerac… great! ….but boy all the football stuff I found so boring 😂.

so-soI do not understand what this book was trying to do - it has like 3+ threads that it attempts to weave together that, to me, do more to weaken each than strengthen them. Honestly, I think the one that aren't orc stuff would make a fine book on their own (maybe the fashion couldn't sustain its own book). As for Nutt... his story veered to much into model minority stuff for my taste.

so-soTo keep the funding of a VERY specific inheritance, the Wizards must compete to maintain the livelihood to which they have become accustomed. Compete, in a game of football.
The wizard books are not my favorite, so I was excited to meet all these new employees of the University that aren‘t wizards. We get loveable characters while also examining mob mentality, stereotyping The Other, and sports culture. A bit of a slow start for me. 🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑
I've finally started the #OokBOokClub book I am behind on, and at a little over an hour in I have some thoughts:
1) I do not remember these UU downstairs characters beyond Nutt and it's maybe because I don't like any of them? Poor Nutt currently included.
2) I realize this isn't the most important thing, but what does Ridcully's grandpa being from Ankh-Morpork mean for him being from Lancre?

Pratchett is always good for a light and funny read, and I love spending time with the Unseen University wizards. This was a reread.

pickOrganised football with rules comes to AnkhMorpork.
Lots of interesting ideas about the roles sport play and the sub-plots about celebrity and fashion also made this a really good entry to the Discworld series.
although one of the things that really annoyed her about romantic novels, as she had confided to Mr Wobble, was that no one did any cooking in them. After all, cooking was important. Would it hurt to have a pie-making sequence? Would a novel called Pride and Buns be totally out of the question? Even a few tips on how to make fairy cakes would help, and be pretty much in period as well.
Glenda had never bothered much about the adverts in the paper, because they were put there by people who were after your money.

pickI loved this! Hilariously, Pratchett sets this novel mostly at a wizard university, featuring trolls, dwarves, and orcs, but the characters are playing real, regulation football (ie soccer).

I quite like the attitudes of Ankh-Morporkians. Specially in a country where people have been assaulted for not standing up during the National Anthem.
SUCH an evocative description of a live sporting event. Captures exactly how it feels.
It's incredible to me that a book of such extraordinary grace was written after the onset of the Embuggerance. Maybe that was on his mind when he wrote this line.
