The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents
The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents | Terry Pratchett
One rat, popping up here and there, squeaking loudly, and taking a bath in the cream, could be a plague all by himself. After a few days of this, it was amazing how glad people were to see the kid with his magical rat pipe. And they were amazing when the rats followed hint out of town. They'd have been really amazed if they'd ever found out that the rats and the piper met up with a cat somewhere outside of town and solemnly counted out the money. The Amazing Maurice runs the perfect Pied Piper scam. This streetwise alley cat knows the value of cold, hard cash and can talk his way into and out of anything. But when Maurice and his cohorts decide to con the town of Bad Blinitz, it will take more than fast talking to survive the danger that awaits. For this is a town where food is scarce and rats are hated, where cellars are lined with deadly traps, and where a terrifying evil lurks beneath the hunger-stricken streets.... Set in Terry Pratchett's widely popular Discworld, this masterfully crafted, gripping read is both compelling and funny. When one of the world's most acclaimed fantasy writers turns a classic fairy tale on its head, no one will ever look at the Pied Piper -- or rats -- the same way again!

This was ok. Not as humourous as I remember of the other (few) books I‘ve read by Pratchett. I hate footnotes, though, and even more so in fiction, but Pratchett uses them. Luckily, there were not many in this book

Pratchett was not afraid to put the tough questions, the concept of corruption/fraud and the messy complexity of (functioning?) society in front of a younger audience. For the fellow vegans and the animal lovers: there are some rough spots. Maurice is a less sympathetic conman than Moist was in Going Postal, but he redeems himself marvelously. Malicia is a work in progress. The climax was action-packed, then moving, and the resolution was clever.

For all that this is the first 'for young adults' Discworld book I've read, it's not pulling any punches.

Another standalone funny and really great Terry Pratchett novel that I enjoyed quite a lot. I've seen comments that it is really not a Discworld novel at all but The City Watch was mentioned so that is good enough for me to make it part of Discworld. A pick!
As a side note, when I submitted my November bookspin list I had Last Light on it but as soon as I started it I found out it was not my kinda read so replaced it with this one.

Hey #OokBookClub! Did you know that The Amazing Maurice was going to be a movie? I didn't either until just now. Maurice will be voiced by Hugh Laurie, which I think is perfect. Nobody does exasperation better! 😄

IMDB lists it as “in production“ so I'll bet this is coming out in 2022.

The Discworld's version of the Pied Piper of Hamlin was unexpectedly creepy and at one point did bring a tear to my eye.

GingerAntics I seem to be in the minority with this one, in that I loved this book. I thought it was adorable. It seems most people think it‘s not as good as the rest of the Discworld books. 4y
See All 15 Comments
julesG I think it's a solid YA book set on Discworld. Pratchett did a good job writing YA. 4y
GingerAntics @julesG yes this is certainly for a younger audience than the previous discworld books. From some of the reviews I‘ve read here and elsewhere, people didn‘t like that or maybe they weren‘t expecting a MG/YA book. Maybe I had the advantage going in knowing that. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I certainly would have loved this story as a kid. I loved it now, honestly. 4y
jenniferw88 This is one of the few I've read 😂! Definitely suitable for children - I think I was a young teenager when I read it. It was either a Christmas or birthday present - it would have been chosen because of the cat! 😂 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I loved it....and I would have loved it as a child too. If only someone had gifted it to me then, it made me think of The Secret of NIMH. 4y
khooliha My brother has a kid who's only 2 at this point, but I'm already planning on giving her a copy of this book. I think this book is great! I think the themes it gets into are really great for kids. 4y
BookmarkTavern @Riveted_Reader_Melissa NIMH! That‘s what this reminded me of! I haven‘t read that story in a while. Thanks! 4y
BookmarkTavern This was one of the few Pratchett books I haven‘t read. I was a little surprised by how much I loved it. I think my favorite part of it was that most of the narration was non-human. I think that was a brilliant twist on this story. 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @ozma.of.oz You‘re welcome! One of my childhood favorites. I loved the movie too. 4y
DrexEdit I enjoyed this one very much! I‘m thinking of changing my Litsy handle to Dangerous Beans. 😄👍 4y
julesG @DrexEdit That would be cool. 😁 4y
gossamerchild @DrexEdit I love that idea! 4y
gossamerchild I'm not really sure why I didn't enjoy this one that much. I feel like I would've loved it when I was younger. I think maybe because this felt more like a parable or a fable, and those aren't my favorite modes of storytelling. The mice were brilliant though! 4y

A retelling of The Pied Piper of Hamelin, mostly from the perspectives of a cat and the rats, all with Pratchett‘s witty humor and insights into human nature.

For being YA, I think this showcases Pratchett‘s talents beautifully. He uses rats (!) to show us what humanity & community & growth can mean. This one I hadn‘t read, and I was not expecting to get so damn emotional over a bunch of rats.

This is definitely going to be a reread. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

Didn't do my normal dumb posting for #OokBOokClub as I read this because I decided to read it in a day because it definitely takes place in just one day. It's good! I like the learning to be people part showing up in the book for kids - it can be a frustrating, tricky thing to learn and it'd be good to have some rats to be there with you for the process.

This book is an absolute blast. It‘s set in Discworld, but it‘s a much different view of Discworld than we usually get. This is another Pratchett favourite for me. This is pretty much Pratchett‘s take on the talking animals adventure story. He just does it way better because he‘s not trying to be cute, he‘s trying to tell a good story (and he does).

GingerAntics I had a hard time holding myself back on this one, too. I had plenty of time to read a chapter a night and still be done with an extra day to spare, but that timeline didn‘t last long at all. #TerryPratchett #TheAmazingMauriceAndHisEducatedRodents #OokBOokClub #Discworld #SirTerryPratchett @julesG 4y

The educated rodents were great, as always Pratchett can tell us so much about the human condition, even when he‘s writing about amazing rodents instead of humans... but a girl who wants to make everything into a story from her books and a cat developing *gasp* feelings for others just pushed this one over the top for me. Hard to believe this was his first YA Discworld novels. He did a great job writing a story for both children & adults.

julesG Like what you did with the picture and cover. 😁 4y

My fiancé asked me to pick out an #audiobook for our road trip this weekend, and of course I spent hours last night poking around my library‘s catalog and got paralyzed by choice ? I ended up checking out these two from #Hoopla: a stand-alone Discworld novel and a nonfiction history of a woman who made monsters for Hollywood movies. I‘m open to suggestions though!

TieDyeDude The Lady from the Black Lagoon (in audio) has so far been my favorite book this year! 5y

This one is classed as "YA" Discworld, which is a bit odd as it doesn't seem any more or less adult than Pratchett's usual stuff. It's great, anyway. Maurice is a cat, and together with his rat associates has been running the Pied Piper scam in various towns on the Discworld. We also get Malicia Grim, grandniece of the famous fairytale-writing Grim Sisters and excerpts from the adventures of Mr Bunnsy and his friends of Furry Bottom. Great.
