Dangerous Alliance: An Austentacious Romance
Dangerous Alliance: An Austentacious Romance | Jennieke Cohen
The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue meets Jane Austen in this witty, winking historical romance with a dash of mystery!Lady Victoria Aston has everything she could want: an older sister happily wed, the future of her family estate secure, and ample opportunity to while her time away in the fields around her home. But now Vicky must marry--or find herself and her family destitute. Armed only with the wisdom she has gained from her beloved novels by Jane Austen, she enters society's treacherous season.Sadly, Miss Austen has little to say about Vicky's exact circumstances: whether the roguish Mr. Carmichael is indeed a scoundrel, if her former best friend, Tom Sherborne, is out for her dowry or for her heart, or even how to fend off the attentions of the foppish Mr. Silby, he of the unfortunate fashion sensibility. Most unfortunately of all, Vicky's books are silent on the topic of the mysterious accidents cropping up around her...ones that could prevent her from surviving until her wedding day.

Despite not being much of a fan of romance novels in general, I love a fun Regency romance that is light on the "bodice-ripping" and heavy on the slow burn. These characters were sweet and the story was heart-warming. I would definitely recommend to anyone who likes historical romances and a friends-to-lovers trope.

I don‘t read much YA but slap “An Austentacious Romance” on the cover and apparently I‘m a goner. 😂 Started last night.

Happy New Year!!! Do you have any #bookish #resolutions

I have a couple (besides read more)

1) Do more bookish cooking recipes
2) Read only the books I am interested in. Don‘t waste my time reading a book I don‘t like DNFing a book isn‘t the end of the world
3) Be more active in the bookish community and make friends
3) visit more bookstores
4) Shopping small business for books and #bookish merch

Set in 1817 England, this follows Lady Victoria Aston, a fan of Austen novels, as she strives to quickly find an eligible bachelor (hopefully one she likes) to wed and save her family‘s estate from her dastardly brother-in-law who has abused her sister and refused to end the marriage. Enter Tom Sherborne, her former neighbor and childhood friend who deserted her at 14 for unknown reasons. While this was OK, I didn‘t get enough depth on the 🔻

robinb characters, and the plot line was all too familiar. Not bad, it‘s just that I‘ve read better. 3.25/5⭐️ 2y

Not a Pride and Prejudice Retelling but Plucky heroine who loves Jane Austen must save the family estate. Good adventure with lots of discussion of Jane and her novels.

Cute and romantic, though not much of a mystery, this proper romance is a very quick read. The heavy, surface level Austen references, I could‘ve done without. It seems strange to me that Cohen wrote an almost exact duplicate Catherine Morland character without ever mentioning Northanger Abbey. A relaxing way to spend an afternoon.

I love the classic regency era novels, and so does Victoria, the heroine of this story. It took a while to get to the excitement and romance, much like those classic stories, but I loved it. So much deceit and mystery!

I have read farrrrrr too many Jane Austen retellings this month for someone who didn't like Jane Austen's books

CocoReads That‘s funny-I don‘t like her either. I don‘t mind the movies but reading her is excruciating. #unpopularopinion 2y

Dangerous Alliance added a little twist to the genre by rooting it in an Austenian world where our MC, Victoria, is trying to make her romantic decisions based upon what she thinks Jane Austen's heroines would do. Overall, it's a good & quick read. The Austen thread is a little thinner than what was advertised but the story still works. If you're looking for something a little lighter to see you through a few days then you might consider this.

This book had a 200 page slow start, however, once the main plot and conflict began the book kicked it up a notch in pacing. I enjoyed the characters, especially Carmichael and Tom with their rivalry and wanting to protect Vicky from each other. Lol Overall it was an enjoyable book and I loved the Jane Austen references, especially when it was focused on Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy from "Pride and Prejudice"! ?

Damn...this is a perfect period piece for me when I need a break. Good old love triangle but NOT with a pair of brothers (I'm as shocked as you). I love the sisters. I want to reach through the book and high five their father so damn much. A period piece where dad isn't sexist as fuck... *chefs kiss*

PurpleTulipGirl The father isn‘t sexist? Is that allowed? 3y

3.5/5

This is a YA Regency era romance, about a heroine loves Jane Austen's novels. I thought it was very fun. The main character seems a little immature, until you consider that she's a 17 year who has to find a husband as quickly as possible, and a little immaturity makes sense.

It was fun to listen to and surprisingly informative about Regency era divorces.

1. The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern, Dangerous Alliance by Jennieke Cohan, and Faker by Sarah Smith

2. Both

3. The last one was an incredible short story by @rachelsbrittain that hasn't been published yet. If you haven't read her short stories yet you should because they're great. Links to the two published in 2019 in a comment because I'm out of characters.

Tragedy and scandal has befallen our heroine's family and she must marry quickly to save her family's estate. It sounds like a pretty simple Jane Austen-style novel, but I was continually delighted and surprised at the twistiness of the plot. There's a mystery, lots of action, along with the (of course) potential romance. I also went down the google rabbit hole more than a few times. (I watched many videos of glass armonica players!)

I mean...it‘s good. I enjoyed it. Did it need to be 420 pages? Nope. Do I feel like she danced around throwing suspicion at the wrong people for a reason? Yes. Tom I liked. Even Carmichael I liked. Victoria does need to grow up but again she‘s like 18. Althea made me roll my eyes so hard...not because of her experiences but because she wouldn‘t just talk to her sister about she was salty with her. Overall a good read.

The novel is a work of historical fiction that operates in a world that aims to be Austen‘s own (no surprise), while managing to modernize a few elements, including the protagonist. Lady Victoria has much more gumption than her Austen predecessors, and I like her for it. As I‘m not a huge Austen fan, I didn‘t expect to like this as much as I did; the book was headed towards 5 stars until a rushed part weakened the story, its style, & pacing. #BOTM

I must admit this was nearly a bail.

I felt the characters were flat and several were one-dimensional. Since character is one of Austen‘s strengths, I was disappointed.

The plot descended into high melodrama by the end, which seems more Bronte than Austen.

Writing an Austen inspired book, especially one set in her period, is a huge challenge and I congratulate the author for taking it on.

Other Austen fans may love it, but it wasn‘t for me.
