The Crow Trap
The Crow Trap | Ann Cleeves
Three very different women come together at isolated Baikie's Cottage on the North Pennines, to complete an environmental survey. Three women who each know the meaning of betrayal... Rachael, the team leader, is still reeling after a double betrayal by her lover and boss, Peter Kemp. Anne, a botanist, sees the survey as a chance to indulge in a little deception of her own. And then there is Grace, a strange, uncommunicative young woman, hiding plenty of her own secrets. Rachael is the first to arrive at the cottage, where she discovers the body of her friend, Bella Furness. Bella, it appears, has committed suicide - a verdict Rachael refuses to accept. When another death occurs, a fourth woman enters the picture - the unconventional Detective Inspector Vera Stanhope...

Very different from what I expected. Not so much about the mystery itself, but more about strong character building. An enjoyable read, and most likely a good pick for people who enjoy a whodunnit, but without the gruesome details and fast paced action.

Tove_Reads @eadieb @Andrew65 The library added the new ebooks. Naturally Ritual is there, but not Last Girl. Tried to purchase it on Kindle, but it keeps on telling me I need to change region. I have the right region set, so I have no clue what‘s going on 🤷🏼‍♀️ You two should just go ahead and read it. 1mo

Finally starting the Vera series! It was a bit of a slow burner for me at first, especially because the reprint edition has huge margins and the book feels so much longer. But I liked how Cleeves set up the stories of each woman, and I like Vera as a protagonist. (I prefer her to Jimmy Perez, to be honest...) Looking forward to more.

This didn‘t work well as a chaser for a much more fast-paced mystery. It is rather plodding and character development goes on for chapters and chapters —and after all that I didn‘t care about the characters anyway. About midway through, a solid detective character named Vera Stanhope emerged. She is certainly fascinating and funny enough to carry a series, and I understand that the series improves a lot.

Andrew65 It does improve a lot. I felt it was strange how long it took the key character to arrive in this book, and she appeared in a strange way. (edited) 10mo
jillrhudy @Andrew65 it *was* weird. I liked that she was unconventional (plain and sloppy and even rude) but she barged into a funeral like a witch out of the woods in a fairy tale or something. Given what she became by the end when she FINALLY became the narrative focus, it just didn‘t work. 10mo
Andrew65 @jillrhudy I agree. There was a big gap between this book and the second book in the series (6 years) so I do wonder when she wrote this one whether she expected it to become a series. I do enjoy the series, and have just read the latest one (The Seagull - book 8) which I think is the best one. Whilst I do enjoy the series I do prefer her Shetlands Series, which is a favourite. 10mo

jillrhudy @Andrew65 that‘s also a TV series, I believe. 10mo
Aimeesue @jillrhudy @andrew65 The series is rather brilliant. Brenda Blethyn plays Vera. ❤️ 10mo
Andrew65 @Aimeesue @jillrhudy I agree, I think Brenda Blethyn is Vera for me, much more than the character in the book. There is also a tv series for her Shetland Series starring Douglas Henshaw but only seen clips of the series. 10mo
Aimeesue @Andrew65 Jimmy Perez! The Shetland series is very good, too. Oddly enough, I‘ve never read the books. 10mo
Andrew65 @Aimeesue I love the Shetlands Series of books, my favourites! Love that island feel of them and Jimmy Perez is such a great character! You feel his angst! 10mo

Solid crime novel with a lot of environmental aspects. It felt more like a stand alone novel until the last 1/3 when it started to introduce the detective and her backstory -- that piece felt a little clunky.

Needed something a little lighter after all the memoirs I‘ve been reading lately. Spent the day in my PJs and read and napped. Finished this early this morning. Great read. Clever writing. Made even better by the fact I see the character of Vera from the TV series. Now what to read next? 😊

I have been a stalwart fan of the tv series Vera, which is based on the books by Ann Cleeves. However, I‘d never read any of the books so thought I‘d start at the beginning with this one. The book is SO MUCH DIFFERENT from the tv version! It is much more layered with more characters and a more intricate plot. Strange thing though - both the book and the tv show are good! It was like two completely different but still satisfying experiences!

I thoroughly enjoyed this slow-paced, atmospheric mystery. Just like the show Vera, it‘s almost 💯% character study and lush landscape. I alternated between the audiobook and physical book when I couldn‘t listen. Can‘t wait to get to next book in the series. Hoping to visit Northumberland later this year! 🦉🦉🦉🦉#OctoberReads

Choosing three characters that describe me was hard.In the end I think these 3 show different parts of my whole. Vera Stanhope for her attitude, refusal to quit & her idgaf approach to her looks,Giles from Buffy for his love of books, his words of wisdom & his caring & Sibyl Stone from The Family Stone for her snark, her love of her family & her enjoyment in torturing them constantly! And all 3 for their utter commitment in protecting those they love.

This book was ok. I try not to judge first books in a series too harshly because there is usually so much backstory the author tries to tell while moving the plot along. Vera doesn't even show up until a third of the way through the book. But I will try more in the series.

Heyporkchop I DNF this which was a bummer because it seemed like it would be something I'd love!!!! 3y
Gulfskye @Heyporkchop This book took me forever to finish. When Vera finally shows up she is just so unlikable and none of the other characters made me care about them but 3/4s in the pace picked up, I started to get a "feel" for Vera and finished. I do plan to try the 2nd book. 3y
