In Such Good Company: Eleven Years of Laughter, Mayhem, and Fun in the Sandbox
In Such Good Company: Eleven Years of Laughter, Mayhem, and Fun in the Sandbox | Carol Burnett
Comedy legend Carol Burnett tells the hilarious behind-the-scenes story of her iconic weekly variety series, "The Carol Burnett Show." Who but Carol Burnett herself has the timing, talent, and wit to pull back the curtain on the Emmy-Award winning show that made television history for eleven glorious seasons? "In Such Good Company" delves into little-known stories of the guests, sketches and antics that made the show legendary, as well as some favorite tales too good not to relive again. Carol lays it all out for us, from the show s original conception to its evolution into one of the most beloved primetime programs of its generation. Written with all the charm and humor fans expect from a masterful entertainer like Carol Burnett, "In Such Good Company" skillfully highlights the elements that made the show so successful in a competitive period when TV variety shows ruled the air waves. Putting the spotlight on everyone from her talented costars to her amazing guest stars the most celebrated and popular entertainers of their day Carol crafts a lively portrait of the talent and creativity that went into every episode. Here are all the topics readers want to know more about, including: how the show almost didn t air due to the misgivings of certain CBS vice presidents; how she discovered and hired Harvey Korman, Vicki Lawrence, Lyle Waggoner, and Tim Conway; anecdotes about guest stars and her close freindships with many of them, including Lucille Ball, Roddy Mcdowell, Jim Nabors, Bernadette Peters, Betty Grable, Steve Lawrence, Eydie Gorme, Gloria Swanson, Rita Hayworth, and Betty White; the people behind the scenes from Bob Mackie, her costume designer and partner in crime, to the wickedly funny cameraman who became a fixture during the show s opening Q&A; and Carol's takes on her favorite sketches and the unpredictable moments that took both the cast and viewers by surprise. This book is Carol's love letter to a golden era in television history through the lens of her brilliant show which won no less than 25 Emmy Awards! Get the best seat in the house as she reminisces about the outrageous tales that made working on the show as much fun as watching it."

Such a great book! Carol Burnett reminisces about her time on the Carol Burnett show. Peppered with interviews and guest speakers, the book covers the show from the first idea to the last episode.
And what I was looking forward to the most: the Curtain Dress from their Gone With the Wind parody. It was just as funny hearing about as it was seeing it.
Burnett is a comedy genius and a great person.

This is not a memoir of Carol Burnetts life - it is a memoir of her show. Very fun listen. I suggest the audiobook, Carol Burnett is narrator and it is like sitting with her as she telis you how the show came about and she relives some of the skits. The show could only happen today if you had the same cast/crew - they were skilled, professional, fun, and seemed to have not only a good work ethic but ⬇

bthegood a real understanding of how fortunate they were to be part of the show and doing work they loved - met May goals 6/6 books read and worked out 4x a week for #BFC21 @wanderinglynn - next month goals remain the same. Make a great day everyone. (edited) 3y

Her show premiered the year before I was born, so I grew up with Harvey Korman, Tim Conway and Vickie Lawrence. I can hear Carol Burnett's voice in my head when I read certain books outloud. So you could say she influenced my career. This was a fun audio book. I'm glad my son was in the room when she did the Tarzan yell.

mandarchy @bthegood I am glad to hear that. So much nostalgia. I don't think many people recognize the elements of vaudeville in entertainment. It seems to have vanished in the 80s. Some of the skits she pulled off would be too long today. It's really interesting. 3y

🎧 I LOVED this audiobook! Audible $6 sale, thank you Libby! Short book, ~8 hours.

If you‘ve seen the Carol Burnett Show & like her you have to LISTEN to this book. She not only narrates but there are actual snippets of interviews of many cast members and guests.

Personal stories about her life, the show, Hollywood stars.

I watched this show in reruns as a kid. This brought back such good memories! I love it!

It‘s was a nice audiobook, but consisted of a lot of repetitive stories from her shows. If you‘re a fan, you‘ll like it, but probably not love it. Highlights were “Went with the Wind” and the behind the scenes with Bob Mackie, and Tim Conway and Mrs. Hwiggins. #memoir

Boy, do I hate to give Carol Burnett a "so-so," but I want to be honest. This book was 60% great. That part was Carol (reading the audio herself) telling behind the scenes stories and how the show came to be, etc.

The other 40% was Carol reliving some of her favorite comedy sketches word for word. She even played all the parts. It was just awkward, and honestly, boring. It was like being told an unfunny "you had to be there to get it" story. ?

I grew up watching the Carol Burnett show & adore her. I saw some interviews about this book & looking for a lighter book to listen to, I checked it out on Overdrive. If you're a fan & tv geek it is a delight hearing it read by Burnett w/pop-ins by some of the cast/crew & hearing details behind memorable sketches like 'Went With the Wind' & her curtain & curtain rod dress. It drags a bit at times in all the details but her charm makes up for it.👍

I finished this audiobook this morning. I love Carol Burnett and have enjoyed the reruns of her show over the years. While the first half of the book would appeal to anyone interested in American pop culture, there were a lot of sketches Burnett discussed in a play by play fashion that got a little old. While her other memoirs may be better, I'm glad to have spent this time with her. She's a treasure.
