1. I prefer hardcover when possible, but trade paperbacks are great too
2. According to my storygraph stats, 25% nonfiction, 75% fiction 🙂
3. I enjoy historical fiction, but science fiction has been my favorite genre since I was a kid
4. More recent, with the occasional classic
5. COFFEE (I'm drinking some right now)
6. Physical, definitely
7. Print. It takes me forever to finish an audio book

It‘s been a few years since I‘ve seen the movie Slumdog Millionaire which was adapted from this book, but this may be one of those rare cases where the movie is better than the book. The main character is a poor waiter who goes through so many horrible things—incest, rape, torture—that end up providing him with answers to win 1 billion rupees on a game show.Even though it ends happily it was still difficult to read so I can see why much was changed

sarahbellum I‘m currently reading this and have about 100 pages to go. I feel the same way- this poor kid! 2y
Karisa I remember seeing Slumdog Millionaire with friends when it came out and loving it. One of the friends who had read the book said the same thing at that time. Sometimes the movie is better! (I think Crazy Rich Asians is better as a movie too. 😶😬🤣) 2y
Blueberry I LOVE this book. And it helped me understand the movie which I saw first. 2y

Do you read to turn your mind off or to turn your mind on? Or both? Discuss.

Magpiegem To turn my mind off of other things, especially at night. But when I flew internationally I would read to keep my. Brain alert on long quiet night flights 3y
suvata @Magpiegem that makes sense. I think I usually read to turn my mind off. Novels tend to do that. Non-fiction tends to turn my mind on. But there are always exceptions to the rule. 3y
wanderinglynn For me, it depends on the book & my purpose for reading. 3y
See All 11 Comments
julesG Both! Or rather, even if I read to turn my mind off, my mind switches on and then starts picking the plot/writing/accuracy/consistency/... apart. 3y
Soubhiville I hadn‘t ever thought of it in quite this way. I read to entertain myself sometimes, to quiet thoughts of the day before bed (I guess that could be turning off), and to fill myself up and educate, which I suppose could be turning on. Interesting question. 3y
TheAromaofBooks I do both, but I definitely trend more towards off!! I do enjoy nonfiction and learning things, but especially if life is busy or stressful, I head for fluff or some suspense!! 3y
suvata Obviously, there are no correct answers. I just heard someone pose that question and thought it was interesting. Just something to ponder. Loved all your perspectives. 3y
Smrloomis Hmm I think I read to focus my mind - either for fun or to add something to it. If I don‘t, there‘s constant chatter going on up there 🤨😂 3y
Deblovestoread I read to unwind or escape (off) mostly, but also read to learn and grow (on). On/off depends on the book in my hands. 3y
kspenmoll I read to escape( mysteries) but I also read to immerse myself in others‘ perspectives, learn about the world, history, science, biography, spirituality etc etc!!!! Learn & grow. 3y
suvata @kspenmoll Me too. I love learning about other cultures and traditions. 3y

This is the book that Slumdog Millionaire is based on. I haven't seen the movie, and I'm pretty sure the version of the book I read (audiobook) was heavily abridged, but I liked it. I really enjoyed the 'twist' but thought more could have been done with it. I'm eager to read the paperback (or watch the movie) to see whether it's the same.

This is my pick for #SetinIndia for #booked2020

Finding it hard to concentrate - but read for a couple of hours in bed last night. A quick read, but I found it quite sad - though to be honest I‘m finding most things sad at the moment.
Cindy is this ok to use for #panasianauthor ?

Cinfhen Hmmmmm, I honestly don‘t know. Maybe my cohosts know the answer..... or Google to the rescue!!! @barbarathebibliophage @4thhouseontheright (edited) 5y
Cinfhen If the mood ever strikes, watch the film!!!!! It‘s actually uplifting as compared to the book, which I too found sad 😢 5y

Starting something lighthearted and fun (I hope!) I need to get this working from home stuff sorted. Started at 6.45am and have just logged off at 5.45pm. My daughter made lunch and I didn‘t stop.
It‘s not healthy. Look after yourselves people ❤️

Kalalalatja Take care Trish! Don‘t overwork yourself ❤️ 5y

MicheleinPhilly As someone who works from home all of the time I can‘t stress enough how important it is to stick to a “normal” work schedule with a lunch and coffee/tea breaks. The work will still be there. Look after you. 😘 5y
TrishB @Kalalalatja @Cathythoughts I need to be stricter! 😘 5y
TrishB @Cinfhen I picked the wrong book again!! Of course I haven‘t seen the film 😁 5y

TrishB @MicheleinPhilly I need to do this soon as I‘m also building up unrealistic expectations for myself and everyone else. Thank you friend 😘 5y
Itchyfeetreader I find working from home really tough for more than the odd day . I have a team in India and any boss and peers are in the US - it‘s much easier for the day to stretch in both directions at home! Given this looks to be long haul o need to find a better routine 5y
TrishB @Itchyfeetreader that‘s why it‘s difficult as I‘m working with partners round the world- as someone finishes, someone else gets going! Definitely need a better routine. 5y
CarolynM Echoing @MicheleinPhilly You MUST schedule breaks. And set a finishing time which you stick to unless there is a good reason to go over. Working from home can be wonderfully freeing and flexible, but only if your mind set is right. Good luck.😘 (edited) 5y
LeahBergen Oh, no! Don‘t go at it so hard. Take care of yourself! 😘😘😘 5y
erzascarletbookgasm Do look after yourself! ❤️ Best of luck working out a routine that‘s best for you. 5y
TrishB @CarolynM @LeahBergen @erzascarletbookgasm I‘m trying 🤞🏻🤞🏻 had a half hour lunch break today! Everything is so urgent it‘s really hard! 5y
Caroline2 Oh no Trish. Make sure you take care of yourself too!! 5y
TrishB @Caroline2 doing my best ❤️😘 thank you (it‘s not good enough yet!) 5y
Centique Oh you poor thing! Teachers and academic staff are so frantic 💕💕 My hubs work from home is intense too. I usually do 15 hours a week for him but that‘s hard now with the kids home. (Not complaining, just getting used to it) I‘ve got a plan today to get the grandparents (who are stuck in their retirement village apartment and not supposed to leave at all) to do some activities with the kids over Skype which I think will help all of us. Kia kaha💕 5y
TrishB @Centique it‘s exhausting for everyone. I‘m grateful I still have a job and getting paid. But I know it‘s no fun for anyone. You take care Paula 😘 5y

This was a uniquely formatted book. The winning contestant on a quiz show is arrested for cheating and he explains how he managed to answer the questions by relating different scenes of his life. The glimpses of extreme poverty and the powerlessness accompanying it will take your breath away. I have watched the movie but did not find them all that similar (from what I remember of the movie, anyways).

#timbittunes #startedfromthebottom made me think of my favorite ‘rags to riches‘ tale. Set in India, it‘s a story of a young man who becomes the biggest quiz show winner in history, only to be sent to jail on accusations that he cheated. We see flashbacks of his life explaining to the police how he knew the answers to the questions.
A story of destiny, luck, and determination.
Also one of the few times a movie adaptation gets it right!

Another quarter of #pop18 reads!

Prompts from right to left: made into a movie | set at sea | real person | favorite prompt 2016 | decade I was born | twins characters | nordic noir | mentioned in another book | childhood classic | true crime | fascinating country | mental health | grief | ugly cover

I am at 30 books now, so I must be able to finish this year‘s Pop Sugar Challenge!

Reviewsbylola Great job!! You‘re ahead of the game! 6y
BarbaraBB @Reviewsbylola Yeah well it‘s really fun I think. How are you going? 6y
Reviewsbylola I‘ve been sticking with the timeline and spreading the prompts out pretty well. I‘m excited for all six of the quarter 3 prompts so maybe I‘ll wrap them up before the last day. 😂😂 Steampunk had me procrastinating in quarter 2! 6y

BarbaraBB @Reviewsbylola Ah, you are referring to Booked2018. There I stick to the timeline as well. I meant Pop18, I thought you were doing that challenge as well? 😘 6y
Reviewsbylola Oh crap, hahaha I am. Got them totally confused for a second. 😂 I have 15 prompts left for that one, so not too bad!! 6y
Reviewsbylola I have most of the 15 picked out and waiting. I‘m probably most nervous about Nordic noir because I already bailed on that prompt before with Smilla‘s Sense of Snow. Now I‘m trying 6y
emilyhaldi I should probably see how I am faring with this challenge!! 6y
BarbaraBB @Reviewsbylola Roseanne sounds good. If not, the tagged one is a real good thriller. I know what you mean about Smilla! 6y

BarbaraBB @Reviewsbylola ‘watching paint dry ?‘! The first few chapters were okay and then it went on an on and on and on... I started another book by Høeg that was even more boring. I bailed on that one and won‘t try him again! 6y

Ram Mohammed Thomas is arrested for winning a quiz show. For how could a poor, uneducated boy like him possibly know the answers to all those difficult questions? Because he got wise living in the slums of India. And because he kept having faith in other people and kept listening to their stories. A lovely story of hope and destiny.

I just couldn‘t stop! I loved this book and while it was the same premise as the film some major changes were made. Both are excellent. Ram who lives on the streets of Mumbai has just won 1 billion rupees by successfully answering trivia questions on a TV program. ~ ⭐️⭐️⭐️ .5 ~ Slumdog Millionaire was highly entertaining. Ram‘s stories were full of drama, escapes, love interest, brutality, poverty, cleverness and street smarts. Ram treated others with compassion and kindness. The level of poverty struck me; the marginalized are often disregarded. I gained a different perspective. Through Ram‘s voice, India came to life for me. And yet, for most of the story, I felt ambivalent.

2017 #3 Novel (India) Audio This was the basis for the movie Slumdog Millionaire and it is obvious from the start that, like Richard Matteson's I am Legend, that the book and movie adaptations are similar only in the plot ideas. I think both are wonderful in their own right. brilliantly read and interesting in its own right.
