Just released our episode on The Turn of the Screw. I enjoyed it. Peter thought the writing was a little antiquated and got bored. What do you all think? Oh, and to those who've read it, do you think the ghosts are real or just in the governesses' mind?
https://anchor.fm/peter-murphy8

Blueberry I definitely liked the miniseries based on it last year better. The Haunting of Bly Manor. 2w
Therewillbebooks @Blueberry I've been curious about that adaptation. I'll check it out 2w
Vansa This is one of my favourite novellas.Haunting and atmospheric,he writes so evocatively you feel her stress and fear.As for if the ghosts are real,I'm paraphrasing Dumbledore, if course they're all in her head, but does that make them any less real?Henry James is a genius 2w
Therewillbebooks @Vansa I like that interpretation! 2w
batsy I feel like I'm one of the few who loves this so it's great to read your take, @Vansa ! Perfectly summed up. 2w

So many things left for the reader to decide on one‘s own. Not sure if I‘m a fan of that or not. Probably better if read with a friend or two. I listened to the audiobook and Emma Thompson did a marvelous job of it.

The Turn of the Screw | Henry James

Also, I was once an abused, mentally ill kid whom adults were always harshly chastising and declaring a Problem, for reasons I had no capacity to understand. So I appreciate this story deeply at the level where it's about how adults project their fears and insecurities, often violently, onto the children over whom they have power. About how provisionally "innocence" is assumed in children. About how the nuclear family fails us all.

blurb
Bertha_Mason
The Turn of the Screw | Henry James

This story is giving me so many different (and not necessarily mutually exclusive) interpretive ideas. I want to read as many different critical works on it as possible now, to see what other readers have thought and seen in it. Trust Henry James to bring out the English lit major in me again. 😂

blurb
Bertha_Mason
The Turn of the Screw | Henry James

I don't think the ghosts are after the children at all; I think Quint wants to fuck the governess and Miss Jessel is jealous.
I think the governess knows this on some level, and, feeling her own "innocence" under threat, transfers this fear to the children's "innocence," because a threat to them is easier to face. Partly because it's less scary, and partly because she'd understandably rather feel like a protector than like a potential victim.

blurb
Bertha_Mason
The Turn of the Screw | Henry James

Whether the ghosts are real or not, I'm pretty sure the governess is having a psychotic break. She sounds like me when I'm having psychotic symptoms--she never tries to help us follow any of the logical leaps she takes from the actually reasonable (given her situation and the information she has) premise that there are ghosts in the house. It's interesting that this story seems to deal in a realist way with psychosis, IN a world that has ghosts.

I really appreciated what this book was able to do. I found it to be less a ghost story and more of a tale of how one woman's "madness" affected those in her orbit. A big focus on where madness and spirituality overlap. Great atmosphere. Glad I finally read this one!

When I first read this book many years ago, I liked it; I still like the story. However, this reread made me remember why I rarely finish James‘ books. He is truly an author who prefers to use 100 words when one will do, and his sentence structure is so convoluted that it‘s easy to get lost. I really do prefer the movies of his novels over the books they‘re based on.

Texreader I couldn‘t agree more with your description of his writing style. I barely made it through this book. 7mo

What did I just read?
So....a woman goes to take care of two children who have lost their parents and are staying with their uncle who doesn't want to be bothered. After that? Well after that is to be determined by the reader. Maybe some ghosts? Maybe naughty kids? Maybe crazy people? Who knows!
I'm glad to have read it and know what the story is but I probably wouldn't recommend this to anyone.

Koffeejazzandbooks I couldnt get into this book...the movie was better lol 7mo

I really have no idea what happened in this novella. Ghosts? Madness? More to the point, I don‘t really care. I was expecting much more. This was my first James. I might get to Daisy Miller at some point but I‘m in no hurry.

Most interesting thing was that I requested this from the library, only to find it on my own shelves. Whoops. I have no memory of buying it, but it looks to be from the Centenary Book Bazaar. 🤷🏻‍♀️

ravenlee That‘s funny, @Buchbeeg - you bought it and it ended up on my shelves! 😆 I have to say I‘m glad I paid a whopping $0.50 for this, as I don‘t expect to get more than that out of it. 8mo
Ruthiella I liked Daisy Miller but was also confounded by The Turn of the Screw. He‘s not easy to read for sure! 8mo
ravenlee @Clare-Dragonfly I know! My mom kept telling me it was such a creepy story, but I didn‘t even get that. It was just...ambiguous. Pretty sure a modern author couldn‘t get a story like this published. It would need more atmosphere or something more definite at the end. 8mo

Considering this book isn't usually my genre, I thoroughly enjoyed it!
I liked the eerie atmosphere, especially when it came to the appearances of the two strange figures, I do wish there was more detail and background information, however considering this was a short story I found it easy to understand. I love how the plot went, and the ending was so unexpected, though maybe the whole plot wasn't exactly logical, it was definitely very freaky!

I really wanted to like this because I‘ve enjoyed the adaptations, but something about James‘ style made this so hard to read. I usually don‘t have a problem reading things from the 19th century. James‘ sentence structure is very convoluted and it‘s often difficult to figure out what exactly the characters are talking about. I get that the point is to make you question the narrator, but there‘s mystery and then there‘s obfuscation.

I picked up this book after finishing The Haunting of Bly Manor on Netflix. I found the audiobook and let's be honest - Emma Thompson got me through. Turns out this is one of my least fave tropes ; “are all these creepy things really happening, or is the lady just GOING CRAZY..“ Also the entire climax of the novel happens on the last 5 pages, and then BOOP we're done. What?? We are better at telling stories than150 years ago, so good for us.

Texreader I agree completely with your review. It‘s really not a good story. And it‘s a good example why I try to avoid classics. So I‘m always surprised when I read something like Bram Stoker‘s Dracula and it feels so modern! So they don‘t all have to be written so poorly, so why were they? 12mo
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Agreed. I tried this one twice, thinking it was just me. 🤦‍♀️ 12mo
LitStephanie @Texreader I don't know about modern, with all the talk of Mina's man brain, haha, but it is definitely scarier than Turn of the Screw! I am not big into this one, either. I think, though, at the time, it probably seemed very original and just hasn't aged well. 12mo
Texreader @LitStephanie Ha! Truth about the reference to Mina! But I see those sort of misogynistic descriptions from writers nowadays, too. All that said, I‘d sure like my time back for listening to Turn of the Screw! 🤣 12mo

I just finished watching this Netflix miniseries. I‘m not sure what I think of it as a modern adaptation, it took the story to SUCH a different place than the original, but I did really enjoy watching it. It was genuinely creepy but didn‘t keep me up at night. And the acting was good so I was interested the characters, even the many unlikable ones.

I was a bit nervous about this modern retelling of the turning of the screw - its a hard book to film and im very loyal to the 2009 version with Michelle Dockery - but I like this and wholeheartedly recommend it for #scarathlon2020. They‘ve made a fair amount of changes to the plot but I never mind that when it‘s done well, and the acting is really good.

This book is an exemplar of why I don‘t read pre-1900 books. The writing feels wordy, flowery, overdone (and why I love Dracula—because it doesn‘t). Unfortunately, that makes the story hard to follow and the “scare” not terribly scary. Emma Thompson, however, is an exemplary narrator. 16 points #scarathlon #teamslaughter

I had mixed feelings about this one. Such a great story with just the right amount of creep factor for me, but I think I would have liked it better in print. The narration got mixed reviews and I found it to be wildly overreacted at a few points which was distracting.
