45 posts | 60 read | 15 to read
Something is amiss at Unseen Unversity, Ankh-Morpork's most prestigious (i.e., only) institution of higher learning. A professor is missingbut a search party is on the way! A bevy of senior wizards will follow the trail wherever it leadseven to the other side of Discworld, where the Last Continent, Fourecks, is under construction. Imagine a magical land where rain is but a myth and the ordinary is strange and the past and present run side by side. experience the terror as you encounter a Mad Dwarf, the Peach Butt, and the dreaded Meat Pie Floater. Feel the passion as the denizens of the Last Continent learn what happens when rain falls and the rivers fill with water (it spoils regattas, for one thing). Thrill to the promise of next year's regatta, in remote, rustic Didjabringabeeralong. It'll be asolutely gujeroo (no worries).

So, I went through another Discworld audiobook last week. I did have some difficulties to follow the Rincewind narrative because it seemed pretty chaotic. It was still funny though, but I don‘t not remember having such peoblems while actually reading it.

deirdrebeecher Yeah this is defo one of the weakest discworld novels.

It's a Discworld novel, so anything's fair game, including all the tropes from Down Under. (No, a trope is not a marsupial.) The Wizards have gone through a portal to Fourecks on the edge of the Rim, and Rincewind has taken the long way around. They'll meet, eventually. On the way, Pratchett skewers all the popular cultural images of Australia, from crocodiles and their hunters, to the beer, the opera hall, and more. It's a grand romp. No worries.

The more Discworld novels I read, the more I enjoy them. This was a great satirisation of Australia, absolutely loved it and had me laughing out loud in parts!

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Finished this one today... my favorite parts might have been Ponder and the god of evolution. 4y
julesG @khooliha I missed those, but am checking right now. I kind of fell into the "it's a Rincewind book" trap. I should try to keep an open mind. 4y
khooliha @julesG I get that - this book is probably why I love Rincewind as much as I do. I don't know how I'd feel about him if I hadn't started with what is basically his ending. 4y
khooliha @Riveted_Reader_Melissa That part is great! Ponder is a lot of fun in this book. 4y
Gezemice I have not gotten around to re-reading this one and I don‘t really recall... I do know that I liked xxxx. I should re-visit. 4y

And the ultimate question becomes: did I latch onto this book because it was a perfect match for me, or did I become the person partially due to reading this book as a teen? For once I'm having a thematically appropriate life.
Either way? No worries.

"Where there's hope there's life, I'll have you know!"
I know a lot of Discworld readers don't like Rincewind, but I have always loved him and, in an Ecksian twist of time, I think my love has sprung backward in time from this book. In my memory he resignedly saved XXXX, but no, he does it because he cares about the people he has meet along the way, he does it in defiance, defending a country against the shade of Death. It's wonderful
#OokBOokClub

khooliha And Death showing up as a friend again is a very sweet nudge. It almost feels like, if Rincewind hadn't been there, Death would have just had another adventure. He certainly wouldn't let a whole continent die. 4y

And don't let it be said that I'm ignoring the other half of the story! The purpose of the business is to be the whole business cuts right to to heart of how beautiful I find the vast complexity and imperfection of biological and ecological systems. This is me getting gooey about my science feelings, written down in someone else's kind, knowing hand.

Death has come by to say hello!! As a friend!!!!!

I think, on a reread, it's sort of obvious that this is destined to be Rincewind's last novel as a lead. Maybe I'm projecting, but it seems a little more reflective, a gentle sort of epilogue.

I am ~really~ in love with the set up of Rincewind's grand quest in this one. In every previous book of his he does things under duress, but this time is quest boils down to “be yourself.“ I don't remember ever seeing him this alone, physically, and the only thing trying to kill him is the environment, sometimes. And it turns out that relatively unstressed Rincewind digs up water for animals and admires pretty birds and just -lives-.
#OokBOokClub

khooliha I have a problem and that problem is this book and how much I love it. 4y

I'm enjoying seeing both Rincewind and Ponder's thought processes, how they're similar and how they both contrast with the rest of the faculty. Rincewind sort of dreads understanding but cannot help it. This is why you're hero material, my dude!

I have started my reread for #OokBOokClub and, looking at this book from decades later, it is truly WILD that I started here. I don't know how welcoming this book is to new comer, except, of course, that it ensnared me entirely. Shout out to this spine, the literally thing that was too intriguing on the library shelf for me to pass up.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Isn‘t that a great feeling? We are coming up to the one I first read (Going Postal), which I read never even knowing it was part of a series. I‘m kind of excited to see how it reads now that I‘ve read all the books that came before. 4y
khooliha @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I remember laughing so often at this book that I confounded my friends, which led to them getting into Discworld too. 4y
khooliha @Riveted_Reader_Melissa And I bet Going Postal is a great starting place! I love Moist so much and I'm excited to revisit him. 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @khooliha I picked it up, just because I liked the back blurb at the bookstore....and it blew my mind at the time. I hadn‘t read anything like it before, I had been a teen reading lots of romance and fantasy, and it was so different from both of those. And honestly, his books are still just so unique. 4y
khooliha @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I have to imagine that one of the things that grabbed my young biologist self was that this fantasy book started referencing evolution pretty quickly. It was a mash up I had not considered possible! Pratchett is so good at writing something unlike anything else, and doing it in such a way that you're left wondering why people haven't been doing it all along. Why -not- more mail delivery/civil service fantasy?! 4y

slategreyskies I‘ve been tagged in these posts since the beginning, but I never got around to reading any of the books. Life got in the way, and I never started. Do these books build on each other? Thinking a lot about Rincewind during this reread (which is deeply unsurprising) and I keep coming back to The Last Continent. Dude is only built for Big Magic, I think. I don't know if he ever takes pride in the frankly incredible things he accomplishes. I got a lotta sympathy for this comedy-only wizard character. #OokBOokClub

Mehso-so

A so-so for Sir Terry? Say it ain't so! But sadly yes. I've never been a Rincewind fan and I read it because I have so few Discworld left. Good not great. Rincewind navigates XXXX and the Australia jokes start to grate. On the other hand the UU faculty are stranded on a mysterious desert island (with a lady!) where poor put-upon Ponder Stibbons has to explain evolution to the Archchancellor and sex to an inquisitive God and that is very funny

MayJasper I share your views on Rincewind. 6y
Moray_Reads @MayJasper I just find him tedious and compared to some of the other characters quite under-developed 6y
MayJasper I agree. I wish the luggage had devoured him sometimes. If I remember he was in the first two books when Discworld was first developing. 6y
Moray_Reads @MayJasper there definitely a big difference between early/later Discworld but Rincewind just seems to stay static. But there were still bits that had me laughing, the rest of the faculty are brilliant. Poor Ponder 6y

Whenever I read a Discworld book by Terry Pratchett, I'm again amazed by the way he manages to transform our world into the Discworld. The Discworld books are probably the ones with the most highlights on my ebook reader.

The wizards somehow end up in Australia (or Ecks Ecks Ecks Ecks as it's called here).Basically this is Pratchett having fun with Australian stereotypes ( a bartender who is a crocodile, called Crocodile Crocodile, towns with names like Dijabringabeeralong and Worralorrasurfa,) There is essentially no plot to this one, and all in all I'd say it's one of the weaker Discworld novels, though I still laughed out loud several times.

Vansa Agreed that the plot is a bit all over the place but I LOVED the references that crop up- I remember something about a " not so jolly swagman on a billabong " or something along those lines and finding it hilarious!! 7y
