This is the memoir Mantel wrote back in 2003. This focuses mainly on her childhood and I loved those parts, learning more about her childhood and family situation. There‘s also some parts about her growing up and her 20s, all her experiences with pain due to endometriosis.

What a book! Suspense building up on every page. And it‘s all so sad. One year ago on Halloween 5 kids in a car slam into a tree. 3 of them are killed. Now it‘s Halloween again and their ghosts are back, just for one day. Floating around and watching their surviving friends, a parent, the cop involved. I did and did not know what to expect and that was exactly what I got. Another (completely different) winner by O‘Nan. Not for the weak of heart.

Cinfhen Sounds FANTASTIC! #stacked 🤩S looks less pleased 😂 9mo
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen Haha he finds this business of me always taking photos of my books pretty childish 😂 9mo

A death of a cadet at a military academy sends Brunetti into a world of secrets and corruption. Leon‘s frequent theme of Justice and the definition of it plays a big role. Humor is also interlaced in the narrative. Another good entry in the series. #192025 #2003

This third and final book in the Arthur of the Seeing Stone trilogy was a weak pick for me. This historical fiction novel follows young crusader Arthur de Caldicot, while the parallel story of King Arthur plays out in his seeing stone. I liked the premise but didn't care for the writing style.

When @TheBookHippie chose Babar for last month‘s #childrensclassicread2023, I couldn‘t resist picking up this one too. Such fun! An unused railroad station in Celesteville is transformed into an art museum to house the King and Queen‘s vast collection of art that features elephants! The paintings and sculptures resemble famous ones from the likes of Rousseau to Seurat and Da Vinci to Cassatt! A celebration of the appreciation of art! #192025 #2003

This is the beautiful, sad story of 15-year-old Kambili, set in #Nigeria. She is the daughter of a wealthy and fanatical religious man who physically and emotionally abuses his family if they don‘t live up to his Catholic standards. During a sleepover with her free-spirited aunt Kambili starts thinking of her own identity - with all consequences. Recommended!

I really struggled with this. The humor tone is way different than mine, & some of the disparaging remarks about midwesterners were cringeworthy (I‘m not from the US Midwest, but I still felt uncomfortable). I also did not really connect with the MC. Yet, when my cozy mystery group discussed this a few days ago, some of the members absolutely loved it. Just goes to show how one book can spark so many different opinions! #2003 #19822022 #Challenge

I learned so much about the Chicago World's Fair, the architects involved in creating it, and the community support for the fair. I learned about Ferris and his wheel, and the influences of the fair on people such as Frank Lloyd Wright and Walt Disney. Interwoven with the story of the Chicago World's Fair, however is the story of serial killer H.H. Holmes. #nonfiction #historicaldrama #truecrime #ReadingThroughTheYears192021 #192021 #2003

KathyWheeler When I bought this book, I bought it for the H.H. Holmes part of the story; however, I ended up actually being more interested in the architecture parts of the book. 5y
Lcsmcat My book group all loved this one, but were pretty evenly divided over which part they liked better. I liked both parts. 😀 5y
