I never read this book as a child, but I wish I had! It‘s lovely and cozy! The Melandy children are just the sort of adventurous and self-sufficient people that young readers would find interesting, and there is plenty for the adult reader to enjoy too. I also loved the urban setting.

One of my favorite books from childhood-though I read a paperback with a 1970s cover update instead of this cool original edition. 😀 It follows each of the Melendey children as they spend a special afternoon in NYC.

LeahBergen Ooooo! I haven‘t read this. Stacked! 3y

Ruthiella @LeahBergen You might like it! If you do, there are three more books, but they all take place in ? Upstate NY? Vermont? I‘m not sure. 3y

batsy I love this one! This cover is just lovely. 3y
Ruthiella @batsy luckily the original illustrations, of which the cover is an example, were in my paperback copy as a kid. Enright was also the illustrator. 3y
TheKidUpstairs Love this! 3y
Ruthiella @TheKidUpstairs It‘s a favorite! Only slightly dated, however! 3y
Centique @Ruthiella this is one of my favourite childhood books. I wish I had a nice old edition. I might have to go scour Abebooks! 3y
Ruthiella @Centique I wish someone would offer a reprint of the original covers! 😀 3y
Centique @Ruthiella yes! I looked and looked for one of these but they‘re as rare as hens teeth. I‘m sure my library had this cover back in the day though. 🧐 3y

We didn't listen to the tagged book at the beach, but we listened on the way to and from. The way Enright tells the story of the storeroom is pretty intense...intense enough to hold the interest of my increasingly jaded teen and tween.

TheAromaofBooks Oh I loved these books when I was growing up! Haven't read them in a long time, though. 4y
ImperfectCJ @TheAromaofBooks I didn't know about them until I found them for my children. We read them a few years ago, and they're among several we're revisiting during lunchtime and drives. I'm really enjoying visiting the Melendy children again! 4y

1. I prefer silence. If the house is noisy I may listen to rain sounds with my headphones.
2. I have a cat, Hilly. She is very much a lap kitty BUT...she has discovered this one, long heating vent and now spends alot of her time sitting on it.
3. I love eating chocolate when reading but try not to do too much of that. I always have my water bottle with me.

I tag anyone who would like to post their answers!

#selfcareaaturday @Bianca

AlaMich My Maddie used to do that. Sure, Maddie, it‘s not like anyone else in the house might like some heat. 😻 4y
Lindy My cat Frida has been spending a lot of time on the heat register too, with all four paws touching it underneath her body. 😊 4y

Happy Saturday! I thought I would share some questions to learn more about y‘all. I hope you can practice some self care today.

-Sometimes I listen to music without lyrics—classical, jazz, or instrumental. Sometimes I just need a continuous background noise.
-I have a Lab rescue who loves to be wherever I am, and my housemate‘s friendly cats sometimes keep me company.
-Chocolate, fruit. Tea or water.
#selfcaresaturday

DrJAdMerricksson Hmm. Sometimes I listen to instrumental music, often movie soundtracks. Occasionally I'll have something comfortingly familiar on TV as background noise. I have SPD- sensory processing disorder. I use those to block trigger sounds. My two kitties looovvee to best in my lap when I read. Usually drink water or tea. Often read while I eat a meal too. 4y
Alora Loved this Q&A! Thank you for making this! 💜😻 4y

I have never forgotten that I first read about “petites fours” in this book when Miranda (Randy) has tea with Mrs. Oliphant.

🍰 “Francois arranged the feast before them. Petites fours turned out to be the most wonderful little cakes in frilled paper collars: pink, and pale yellow, and chocolate, with silver peppermint buttons on top.”

Fairly sure this is why I majored in French! 🇫🇷 #riotreads #icecreamsweettreats

Niallism Mr Kipling‘s ‘French Fancies‘ are petit fours, and they will melt your heart while they‘re melting your teeth. 6y

DrJAdMerricksson 😆😆😆 we have the same major and minor. Anth and psych. My primary foci were North American archaeology and forensic anth, but I had a fair amount of cultural in there too. 6y
JackOBotts @DrJAdMerricksson 🙌🏼 So fun to find a “study buddy”! 🤗 My University also offered Biological Antrho & Anatomy, but there wasn‘t much required crossover between the two programs. Did you get to do fieldwork as an undergrad on site? Where? Fascinating. 6y
DrJAdMerricksson @JackOBotts I helped on a few small projects close by. More of my hands-on work was in forensics. Our professor was attached to the GBI and we helped with some of that work. And our final was to analyze a cold case from the GBI, and present our findings. 6y

Enjoyed very much my revisiting of the Melendys. In this one, the first of the series, they are living in NYC in the 1940s. As I recall it, later books have them living in the country. I plan on getting the rest of the books very soon 😊!

TheWordJar I loved this book as a kid, and recently got to introduce it to my kids. They immediately wanted to go out on adventures on their own. (I can't remember the name of the girl who got a manicure, but she was always my favorite!) 7y
BethwithBooks I just picked this up at a booksale! I never read t as a kid but it still felt familiar somehow 7y

#TBT ! How many of you read the Melendy Family as a kid? I did, over and over! But it was a omnibus copy from the library and currently that edition is selling for upwards of $250 😱. I was pleased to find the first installment (above) on book outlet for just $1.99. Hate the new cover versions but at least the original illustrations are still there. I remember crushing on Rush Melendy 😊.

Betty Me too!!! I read them as separate books; no omnibus back in my day 7y
ValerieAndBooks @Betty good memories, right? I was surprised at how much I remembered as I was reading. 7y

This book, and the 3 books that follow it, are my favorite books from childhood. I've lost count of how many times I've read them. When people ask me what I want to be when I grow up, I tell them, "A modern day Elizabeth Enright."
