A Great Reckoning
A Great Reckoning: A Novel | Louise Penny
147 posts | 125 read | 4 reading | 87 to read
When an intricate old map is found stuffed into the walls of the bistro in Three Pines, it at first seems no more than a curiosity. But the closer the villagers look, the stranger it becomes. Given to Armand Gamache as a gift the first day of his new job, the map eventually leads him to shattering secrets. To an old friend and older adversary. It leads the former Chief of Homicide for the Sûreté du Québec to places even he is afraid to go. But must. And there he finds four young cadets in the Sûreté academy, and a dead professor. And, with the body, a copy of the old, odd map. Everywhere Gamache turns, he sees Amelia Choquet, one of the cadets. Tattooed and pierced. Guarded and angry. Amelia is more likely to be found on the other side of a police line-up. And yet she is in the academy. A protégée of the murdered professor. The focus of the investigation soon turns to Gamache himself and his mysterious relationship with Amelia, and his possible involvement in the crime. The frantic search for answers takes the investigators back to Three Pines and a stained glass window with its own horrific secrets. For both Amelia Choquet and Armand Gamache, the time has come for a great reckoning. #1 New York Times bestselling author Louise Penny pulls back the layers to reveal a brilliant and emotionally powerful truth in her latest spellbinding novel.

I was stuck in my chair for 12 hours today, but fixed that with a whiffle ball game with the kids, and a walk after dinner. I have been switching between Harry Truman and Louise Penny today. Truman to keep my brain active during repetitive work, and Penny for comfort. #litsywalkers #bfcr3

wanderinglynn That‘s a long time to be stuck in a chair. Glad you were able to have some fun! (edited) 5d

Another visit to Three Pines and the warmth and wisdom of Armand Gamache. I found this mystery more satisfying than the last couple have been and I loved the new characters. I hope we'll be seeing them again.
My second book for #cozyinthesun

Librarybelle Love Three Pines and Gamache! 1mo
Amiable I love the individual books themselves, but I especially love the narrative arc that is ongoing across the entire series. I eagerly await each new installment! 1mo
CarolynM @Amiable Yes, the bigger picture gives the series an extra dimension that raises it above most other mystery series. 1mo

Another great visit to Three Pines! I really loved the very last lines. Now I care more about the ongoing storylines than the murder mystery in each book, although that is fun to guess about. Louise Penny really hit her stride in these last few books. I listened to the audiobook and discovered I‘d been pronouncing a lot of these names wrong! (I‘ve seen this series on some lists of cozy mysteries so I‘m counting it for #CozyinTheSun)

ferskner This definitely counts! I think of these as a cozy/police procedural mashup. I'm going to be reading some of them later in the month! 2mo
Librarybelle I adore the Three Pines series! I think of them as a meatier cozy 2mo
MallenNC @ferskner Thanks! I‘m never sure about the ones that feature police/detectives. I‘m hoping to read at least one more of these this month. 2mo
MallenNC @Librarybelle I love this series. A few of the ones in the middle weren‘t my favorite but I‘ve really enjoyed the last few. I saw Louise Penny at an event last week and she was hilarious! 2mo

This is the next book for me in this marvellous series set in #Canada. I was going to say "Don't bother to #GetOutTheMap because you won't find Three Pines on it", but when I read the blurb I saw that the discovery of a map is central to the plot, so my choice is even more appropriate!

I really enjoyed this book about a Canadian police academy, a murder, and a mysterious map, and was excited to find chances to listen (I listened via audiobook). I grew to love the characters, feel engaged with their life choices and searches, and care about what happened to each of them.

Louise Penny's books are always filled with wisdom, morality and life's hard earned lessons. She has created wonderful characters and I'm glad she gave the majority of the residents of Three Pines a rest from being murder suspects.

👍🏾👍🏾 for this ending. I had almost given up thinking I‘d missed the key to an important character identity. As readers have mentioned, this series grows on you as the characters develop.

At first I was disappointed the narrator wasn‘t the one I had become accustomed to, the one with the French accent. He is able to differentiate the characters‘ voices so well, especially Gamache.

As I read, I jotted page #s so as to revisit descriptions, dialogues, etc. On p.179, a stained glass church window becomes a clue. WWI soldiers are depicted & under the window it says “They Were Our Children.” And then the list. No ranks. Just names. In death they were equal. As a history major,I regret that most know little about The Great War.This image “stays” with me even now that I finished the story.

Maria514626 WW1 is horrifyingly fascinating. On another note, welcome to Litsy! 🙋‍♀️ 2y
CMB Thanks for the welcome. That‘s a good way to describe it; it‘s horrifying to imagine experiencing the trenches or the social cost or, if you survived, trying to deal with the aftermath. And, yet, it is fascinating... 2y

Another great book in the Inspector Gamache series, with the familiar, quirky cast of characters in Three Pines you can't help but love. Gamache revisits some old ghosts in his new position as head of the Police Academy, where murder and mystery are at the head of the class.

Rather than review, I thought I would include some cool comments from the author. She sounds like someone I'd like to meet.

Even though I swore I wouldn‘t listen to another Louise Penny in audio after Ralph Cosham died, I found I was missing the comfort of having the Gamache series read to me. Robert Bathurst is no Cosham, but I‘m getting used to it. It‘s great to be back in Three Pines again!

emtobiasz I thought you were giving us a horrible spoiler, but then I realized you meant the audiobook narrator! I'm so sorry to hear of Cosham's death: his narration has been my main entry point to Three Pines as well 💔 2y

I'm becoming a great fan of Louise Penny's Chief Homicide Inspector, Armand Gamache, and the cast of characters that inhabit his world. I love Penny's style, what I might call "gentle" murder mysteries - well written and intriguing with interesting characters, and just enough tension that you find it hard to put the book down. Enjoyable light reading.
