Another solid entry in the series. Definitely benefits from having read Glass Houses first, although I was able to follow events despite having read Glass Houses over a year ago. The drugs storyline may be a bit dark for those who like their mysteries cozier, but the character interactions have a richness that offsets the darkness.

Bookwormjillk I was just thinking I should re-read both of those 2mo

As usual I enjoyed visiting Three Pines very much. This one has a good mystery as well as some interesting developments in the ongoing story. I wonder how she will handle them going forward.

#BookReport Apart from bailing on The Arsonist, this was all I read this week - too much pre-Christmas socialising.

#WeeklyForecast Not sure what I'll pack. It's going to be stinking hot for a few days where I'll be so there should plenty of reading time.

Cinfhen Most people are wishing to fly somewhere warm for the holidays and you‘re “complaining” about the heat. I‘m just fascinated by that. It‘s really kind of neat. So how did bookclub go, since you bailed?? Did the others enjoy? 2mo
CarolynM @Cinfhen Tomorrow I am driving 8 hours to my parents' house in Adelaide where the forecast temperatures for the next 4 days are 40, 42, 41 and 44 (minimum of 27 on Thursday night). It will be fine, but it would be nicer to be home where it won't be as hot as that and we have a little pool😁 The book group liked the book more than I did. 2mo
BarbaraBB That is so hot. I can‘t imagine how to be productive in those temperatures. You can‘t do much more than keep calm and read I guess? 2mo
See All 21 Comments
BarbaraBB Also - I sent you a little something that, according to my track & trace, arrived in Australia on December 3rd. Ever since I received no updates. Let‘s hope it didn‘t melt 🥵😉 2mo
CarolynM @BarbaraBB I really is. I don't mind a day or 2 over 40 but it wears you down when it goes on longer than that. As for productivity, it's ok inside with industrial strength air-con, not usually so great after a couple of days with ordinary domestic air-con, though. 2mo
CarolynM @BarbaraBB Thank you, that's really sweet of you. Melbourne won't be as hot as Adelaide. My last parcel to you dropped off the tracking radar after arriving in the Netherlands and then took a couple of weeks to reach you. Maybe our respective customs people are suspicious of each other😂 2mo
BarbaraBB Okay, that is good to know. I‘ll be patient for a few more weeks. Strange though - considering that so many Dutch have emigrated to Australia and there will be so many parcels travelling between our countries, I think. 🙏 2mo
BarbaraBB Good luck with the heat, I hope you‘ll be back in the ‘cool‘ Melbourne region soon. Have a safe trip 😘 2mo
Cinfhen Whoa!!! Those are HIGH temps!!!!! I‘d probably be a little kvetchy too😜 (edited) 2mo
LeeRHarry @Cinfhen that‘s a great word! 😊 2mo
LeeRHarry Stay cool! I‘m keeping my fingers crossed for cool - ish weather ie 25C over Christmas 🤞 2mo
CarolynM Thanks @LeeRHarry 😘 Here's hoping for a couple of moderate weeks before the next heatwave. 2mo
CarolynM Thanks @BarbaraBB 😘 2mo
Cinfhen It‘s a great word @LeeRHarry because let‘s face it... we all get that way sometimes 😂😂 2mo
Cinfhen Safe travels, Carolyn ❤️enjoy family time 2mo
CarolynM Thanks @Cinfhen 😘 2mo
Centique Oh man that is HOT. I hope you have good air con and lots of icy drinks! 🍸🥂🧊 2mo
CarolynM @Centique All good so long as the power stays on😬 2mo
Freespirit Have a lovely holiday @CarolynM Stay cool xxx 2mo
CarolynM @Freespirit Thanks Sally. Super hot over night last night (minimum of 33, I think😬) after a blisteringly hot day and very hot today too, but the cool change has come through now. Sounds like tomorrow will be pretty bad over your way. Hope you can keep cool and you're safe from the fires😘 2mo
Freespirit The fires have moved on from near us but are burning around the Blue Mts where my family live. It's relentless with this heat. Not a drop of rain in sight😥 Hope you have a lovely Christmas break 😘😘 2mo

Louise Penny is a gem! I love listening to her books on tape. This one follows the three pines clan as they investigate a mysterious inheritance, Royal lineage and a murder. Meanwhile, inspector Gamache is also tracking down a dangerous street drug before it kills half of Montreal. Grab a mug of cocoa and some cookies to snuggle up with this cozy mystery.

CherylRussell One of my favorite series!🙂 2mo

First read of this Louise Penny. I read it in French (would have prefer to read it in English) but it was a great book. Not the kind I read often but I really enjoyed the intrigue.

#TeamSlaughter @Clwojick #ScaryScavengerHunt Finished this mystery set in Three Pines and part of the Armand Gamache series. Armand, Myrna and Bernard are made the liquidators of the will of a cleaning woman known as the “Baroness”. Seemingly they have no connection with her prior to her death. Also, the drugs that escaped from the sting operation of the previous book are on the streets ready to kill. Points for #Mystery and #PartofaSeries

To quote the author herself:

“My books are about terror. That brooding terror curled deep down inside us. But more than that, more than murder, more than all the rancid emotions and actions, my books are about goodness. And kindness. About choices. About friendship and belonging. And love. Enduring love.

If you take only one thing away from any of my books I'd like it to be this:

Goodness exists.” ❤️🌲🌲🌲

This #audiobook brought back memories of the Canadian winters—brrrrr! The humorous banter between the characters is a delight. The book addresses multiple themes, including the opioid crisis. There are some sections that drag a little; but overall, it‘s a solid addition to this excellent series.

So excited to be getting back into this series. My only problem was that it had been so long since I read the last one, I‘d forgotten how it ended. I‘m glad I don‘t have to wait long for the next. I can‘t believe how fast she keeps churning these out, it‘s awesome! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

One of the better ones in this series, though I‘m not happy with the villain (or the way the villain was described in the book, over and over) or a potential couple in the future of the series. Meanwhile, the mysteries aren‘t bad, and Gamache isn‘t so filled with ponderous philosophical bullshit as usual, so 2.5 ⭐️.

Louise Penney didn't think she'd be able to continue to write Gamache books after her husband died - Gamache was modelled after him - she wrote this lovely reflection about how and why she managed to keep writing. She goes on to say "They're not do much about death, as life. And the consequences of the choices we make."
I love this!

Bibliogeekery These books do strike such a chord with me around yearning for community and kindness. Interesting thing to achieve in a murder mystery series but it's true! 13mo

As always, I‘m happy to be back in the world of Three Pines and Inspector Gamache! This is one of my top favorite series‘ I‘ve ever read, and this next installment doesn‘t disappoint. It digs into not just the crimes but the histories and feelings of the people involved. Not quite as deep as some of the others, but carries the story along nicely.

If you‘re going to begin this series, read in order to get the full depth of the series.

Just finished this latest in the Gamache series. I give it 3.5 ⭐. Gamache has to recover the carfentanil that was lost from last book, before it hits the street. In the meantime Myrna, gamache and a new person, Benedict, are named as liquidators of a will, though they dont really know the woman who died. Lots of beautiful prose, but I had an idea of how the plots would resolve, which normally I don't with her books. Recommend.
