Mehso-so

So I actually loved a lot of this - Emma is quite the character, and I found the film to really bring it all to life for me! The reason I've rated it so-so is that the pacing was a bit slow for me and I found it to drag at points. That said, I am putting some of this down to this being my 4th Jane Austen in a row, so I'm going to read something else for a bit before reading the last 2 of her books!💫

Next up: Purple Prose: Bisexuality In Britain!

KathyWheeler I‘m reading Emma right now and it is a little slow. What I‘ve done though is read until I‘m not in the mood, put it down (sometimes for months), and pick it back up again when I‘m in the mood. It‘s taken me about two years to get half way through, but I don‘t get bored and I don‘t forget what‘s happened. 5mo
Moll I like that; good approach! 5mo

It‘s been a lifetime since I‘ve read any Jane Austen.. I loved the development of Emma‘s character , all the gossip & intrigue. I enjoyed the formality of the writing , the language being so proper… a nice change from all our modern slang & a pleasure to read. Thankyou @sprainedbrain for the daily updates , they were perfect & kept the reading moving along nicely. Looking forward to reading Persuasion with you #Pemberlittens

"Have you anything to send or say, besides the 'love,' which nobody carries?" I love Mr. Knightley's occasional quips like this. Really, why do we all feel compelled to "send our love" or even "tell her hello" when it doesn't really mean anything? Chapter 45. #pemberlittens

SamAnne I know! This might be my favorite Austen. 7mo

#MayCharacters - Meddles: How could such a word be used to describe this fabulous individual? Much better served by words like caring, curious and clever. Yes, she gets it all wrong on Harriet‘s behalf thus ‘meddling‘ gets the upper hand. But she means well. She hopes to find an upgrade husband for Harriet thus sweet ‘matchmaker‘ is to my liking (although her selection skills need some drastic improvement🥴). I like her as she is...endearing Emma!

Nute @ChaoticMissAdventures I like this version as well, but my mind‘s eye always sees Gwyneth Paltrow as Emma! Have you watched that version? 8mo
Nute @rubyslippersreads Sometimes I don‘t even know what my own mouth is saying!!!😆🤣 8mo
ChaoticMissAdventures @Nute I have a completely irrational dislike of Paltrow. So much so the only movies I have seen with her in them are the Marvel movies where she barely appears 😆 8mo
Nute @ChaoticMissAdventures I have read about other folks feeling the same way about her. I wonder what it is? Is it acting related? Oh, Shawna, I am laughing at how you described it...”a completely irrational dislike.”😂 If you can ever get passed it...this version is well worth a watch. 8mo
ChaoticMissAdventures @Nute for me it is a visceral reaction to her smug white face. 😆 And the more she does her Goop stuff the more annoyed I get with her whole person. But yes it would be nice to get over it to watch her Emma. I am so glad you enjoyed it! 8mo

In the battle between Knightley and Mrs. Weston over Emma's faults and virtues, he makes one concession: he has "seldom seen a face or figure more pleasing." Or as Josh in Clueless might say, "You know you're gorgeous, alright?" #PemberLittens

I love Emma - the novel and the character! I'm so happy to dive into this reread! The characters in this one are so vivid, and flawed, and I adore them. Mr. and Mrs. Elton are fabulously cringe-worthy(2nd only to Mr. Collins), and Mr. Knightly and Emma's banter is everything. Emma has always been one of my favorite Austens. #pemberlittens

I recently watched the 2020 film adaptation of Emma, and I'm positively baffled by all of the glowing reviews I've seen! I've always agreed with #JaneAusten that Emma is a heroine that only she, the author, would like, and this director seemed hell-bent on playing up all of Emma's worst attributes without much growth. I'm revisiting the source material now to compare. What did you think of this adaptation, #PemberLittens? #AugustAuthors

I must admit, it took me a bit of time to get into this book, it‘s slower-paced than I‘m used to (I haven‘t read much Austen, to my discredit). But by the end I found myself quite interested and wondering who would end up with whom and how they would all take it. A charming mix of characters. I definitely want to read more of Jane Austen‘s books because this one was an enjoyable read!

My third read of this one and though it‘s not my favorite Austen (Persuasion!), it‘s still a comfort read for me. I want to smack Emma at times, but I love that there‘s room for character growth and learning from her mistakes. I think Austen put a lot of herself into this character, especially her beliefs about marriage. Can‘t wait to see the new film version!

Finally got to see Emma tonight (I‘ve been waiting for this movie for like forever it feels like 😂). It‘s an absolute delightful confection of a film. Well cast. Beautifully shot. Emma has never been my fave Austen heroine, but this adaptation makes me like her a little bit more. Absolutely recommended for Austen fans - and anyone who wants to see a fun period piece. 😃 #onlyslightlybookrelatedpost

MrBook Looking forward to this one! 2y
MaureenMc I often feel in the minority because I adore Emma. 😊 Looking forward to seeing this adaptation. 2y

I‘m loving the look of these word cloud editions. Emma was so fun. I wanted to read it before seeing the movie and I‘m so glad I did. Not sure why I haven‘t read this before now. Loved it. Now to see the movie. 5 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Karkar I think I might be in love with those spines. 📚📚❤️📚 2y

It‘s a book...it‘s a play...and now, Littens, it‘s a musical! Well, maybe it‘s been one before, I can‘t be entirely sure the one I saw tonight was the very first musical adaptation of what is really my least favorite Austen book. Rest assured, Emma is as obnoxious and terrible on stage as she is in print! The musical itself was quite enjoyable and made for a fun Saturday night.

Cinfhen I just read this book....I didn‘t think EMMA was horrid, maybe misunderstood/ confused/ “clueless” 😜 2y
TracyReadsBooks @Cinfhen She is all of those things! The actress who played Emma was fantastic and did a good job portraying her youth and self-assuredness along with her good intentions. I must say, however, the woman who played Harriet Smith absolutely stole the show! 2y
Cinfhen Harriet is a gem 2y

Finished Emma is time for the movie premier! While I do love the comedy of CONSTANT errors contained within this story I do not believe than any amount of re-reads will ever make me like the main character.
