Paying Guests | Sarah Waters
The volcanically sexy ("USA Today") bestseller about a widow and her daughter who take a young couple into their home in 1920s London. It is 1922, and London is tense. Ex-servicemen are disillusioned; the out-of-work and the hungry are demanding change. And in South London, in a genteel Camberwell villa a large, silent house now bereft of brothers, husband, and even servants life is about to be transformed, as impoverished widow Mrs. Wray and her spinster daughter, Frances, are obliged to take in lodgers. With the arrival of Lilian and Leonard Barber, a modern young couple of the clerk class, the routines of the house will be shaken up in unexpected ways. Little do the Wrays know just how profoundly their new tenants will alter the course of Frances s life or, as passions mount and frustration gathers, how far-reaching, and how devastating, the disturbances will be. Short-listed for the Man Booker Prize three times, Sarah Waters has earned a reputation as one of our greatest writers of historical fiction."

Hey, if you love the idea of deeply convincing historical fiction about the lives of ordinary British women just after WWI, which veers slowly into a gorgeous lesbian romance, and (I haven‘t reached this part yet, but according to the reviews) then transforms into a murder mystery—well, you will adore this magnificent novel as much as I do. I‘m only halfway through, so don‘t tell me how it ends!

Carolyn11215 I love Sarah Waters‘ books! Fingersmith one of my all time faves! 2mo

I‘m impressed by Sarah Waters‘ range as a writer. Sure, like Fingersmith, this book was suspenseful and almost horror-like in its close perspective and there were elements of lesbian romance in a historical context. But it certainly stands on its own as a riveting story and impassioned character study. I didn‘t love this book, but listening to Juliet Stevenson‘s narration was a delight. Waters‘ writing is gorgeous and her dialogue is excellent.

saresmoore To be honest, I could have done with a few more twists. I was just certain that it would turn out that Leonard was having an affair with Charlie (nope). The ending was a bit of a disappointment, too. 5mo
Susannah I totally agree with you. I was disappointed, but the construction of her story and development of her characters are just so good! 5mo
readordierachel Juliet Stevenson could narrate the phone book and I would listen. 5mo

I got new headphones and they‘ve changed the audiobook experience utterly. This is me #audiocooking while listening to a particularly blushing part of the tagged book. I had to put down my peeler! 😳

Moray, you are absolutely right—Juliet Stevenson is a brilliant narrator. I‘ve become lost in the story!

Lindy Headphones make a big difference. I‘m getting by with a pair that only works on one side and it‘s not as immersive as two ears full. 5mo
saresmoore @Lindy I figured I just wasn‘t an audio person, but the difference is pretty incredible. I had been using a pair of outsized old earbuds that gave me a headache. Perhaps new headphones will be a holiday gift for you, this year? 5mo

merelybookish A good audiobook can make laundry fun! 5mo
saresmoore @LauraBeth Oh, good. I assumed as much, but in my house, there‘s a lot of insubordination going on in the form of one very forgetful husband. 5mo
saresmoore @merelybookish It‘s true! I think of how productive I could be with audiobooks if I could just get rid of my needy children... 😆 5mo

saresmoore @Cathythoughts I loved Fingersmith! The Little Stranger will be next. The audio is very, erm, emphatic? Lively? Immersive? Which is great, but really intensifies this already rather intense book. Not just the sexy bits, but many of the scenes are very vivid and almost gory. I think I like it! 😅 5mo

I‘ve been thinking a lot about language and its relationship to detail and violence. Both The Paying Guests and Angela Carter‘s “The Bloody Chamber” depict violence and gore at a microscopic level of detail, but that close eye seems inextricable from the lush, twisty prose with which both stories are told.

rachelsbrittain I've really got to read both of these-- especially since The Paying Guests is still sitting on my shelf 😅 9mo

Zelma I recently read these two back to back. Both excellent (though I felt like The Paying Guests started strong and faltered as it went on). 9mo
Mollyegutman @Zelma I don‘t think I know a single person who‘s happy with the ending! I wonder if that‘s the point, though? Maybe the shift in genre in the second half—I think it moved from a romance to something more like a thriller—makes us look at the women differently, too. I love that book almost doesn‘t *allow* us to like them by the end. What do you think? 9mo
Zelma @Mollyegutman interesting take on that. I can see the switch in genre but I felt like it got too repetitive. I just got bored, to be honest. I was fine with the romance taking a backseat/fizzling; I just think the courtroom scenes weren‘t as strong as the domestic ones. 9mo
Mollyegutman @Zelma oh, huh! I could see that. 9mo

Mehso-so

I am giving this a so-so because of the second half of the book which drags on and on and because of the the ending. The first half, however, is excellent! The attraction between the two main characters is palpable, the description of the house, the endless chores, the dull life that Frances is trapped in, it's wonderfully written. Sadly, the second half was just a rushing through it to see how it ends.

Hmmmmm, I am going to give this a pick because once the death finally happened, it was intriguing. I nearly bailed when the MC relationship got all “twee”, erotic is fine, but not twee. This is my first Waters novel and I enjoyed her style of writing and character development. It reminded me a little of Wharton. However, I did not enjoy this ending, but then again I feel like I‘m a tough customer in that respect. 3⭐️

Soubhiville I‘m listening to this now. My favorite by her is Tipping the Velvet. I like it so far, 4 hours in to 22 altogether! 1y
Tamra @Soubhiville it is a long one! I didn‘t realize it until today when I wanted to know how it ends! I listened at higher speed, probably 1.5. Juliet Stevens is an amazing narrator! She & Emma Thompson must come from the same area/class bc their intonation & accents are very similar when speaking for Frances. (edited) 1y

This book was beautifully written, and once things started happening, I could not stop listening. But it took 8 hours into the the 21 hour audiobook for something interesting to happen. This was almost a bail because I was so bored. I also have trouble with books that have no likeable characters. Everyone in this book was a pretty crappy person, who didn't have to have the consequences of their shitty behaviors.

Not my favorite Sarah Waters, but still a good read. The internal turmoil and drama between the two main women of the story is quietly devastating & a thread of tension runs through the plot. It‘s the ‘20s after the Great War, & the impoverished Wrays must take in paying lodgers into their once grand home. Spinster Frances & her widowed mother rent out to the lower class Barbers. Frances & Lillian Barber become close, with unforeseen consequences

JazzFeathers I'm still unsure whether l want to read this. I would like to try Waters, but l'm not sure this is the book l want to try 🤔 1y

Pickpick

Loved it loved it loved it - its going to be one of my contenders for favourite book of 2017! Sarah Waters tells amazing stories with such wonderful language - she keeps the story going and adds such a richness to everything. There are so many parts of the story that can play out in my head in such detail, I feel I've seen a film of it!

Mehso-so

A book where I‘ve sped read the first half and then only enjoyed the second half a bit when all the excitement started. Her English prose was just too lengthy for me with dragging plots. Definitely not my cup of tea. Finished it to find out the ending which was kinda lacklustre

🏝📚This book just reminds me of sitting on the beach and around the pool in Menorca on my hols last year - thought I‘d read loads but this is the only book I read! #emojinov

Moray_Reads It's a long one for a holiday/beach read! 2y
MrsMalaprop One of the only Sarah Waters I have yet to read... 2y
youneverarrived @Moray_Reads yeah it took me the full week to finish it! 2y
youneverarrived @MrsMalaprop it‘s good but for me it‘s my least favourite of all her books. 2y

#stranger
#awesomeautumnbooks

Two books from my TBR so not completely sure if the prompt is accurate but from the book descriptions, it seems that strangers walk into the main characters lives and nothing is the same again.

AmyG The Paying Guests is very good. 2y

Loving the print on my first book sleeve! But wishing that I'd thought to get one that closes at the top - any suggestions on good places to order one from? #booksleeve

rubyslippersreads I ❤️❤️❤️ the two I got from @bookgogo, and one of the big reasons is that they close at the top. (edited) 2y
Captivatedbybooks Love it!!! 2y
TheLibrarian Love that print! ❤️ 2y
Aims42 I got mine from @BookBeau and I love it so far. It however doesn't close at the top so probably not much help there 😕 (edited) 2y
BookGoGo Thank you @rubyslippersreads for the tag! All of my #BookGoGo have a Velcro tab which is placed so even if it's a big book it still closes easily 👍🏻 2y
vicgreentoriafield Love the sleeve! Who makes this one? The fabric is amazing 2y
swishandflick @vicgreentoriafield I got it from DesignsbyMBoutique on Etsy 😄 2y
mrozzz This one is beautiful though!! 2y
swishandflick @mrozzz Right?! I love it!! I think at this point I'm wondering what took me so long and looking for an excuse to buy another 😂 2y

I had a truly fun month of reading in July. So many wins. I almost wonder how I'll ever top those books in August. 🌞🌞
