Dominicana: A Novel | Angie Cruz

I have been eagerly waiting for a new book from Angie Cruz. So glad the time has come. Edwidge Danticat, author of Brother Im Dying and Breath, Eyes, Memory Gorgeous writing, gorgeous story. Sandra Cisneros, author of The House on Mango Street An essential read for our times. Cristina Garcia, author of Dreaming in Cuban Fifteen-year-old Ana Cancion never dreamed of moving to America, the way the girls she grew up with in the Dominican countryside did. But when Juan Ruiz proposes and promises to take her to New York City, she has to say yes. It doesnt matter that he is twice her age, that there is no love between them. Their marriage is an opportunity for her entire close-knit family to eventually immigrate. So on New Years Day, 1965, Ana leaves behind everything she knows and becomes Ana Ruiz, a wife confined to a cold six-floor walk-up in Washington Heights. Lonely and miserable, Ana hatches a reckless plan to escape. But at the bus terminal, she is stopped by Cesar, Juans free-spirited younger brother, who convinces her to stay. As the Dominican Republic slides into political turmoil, Juan returns to protect his familys assets, leaving Cesar to take care of Ana. Suddenly, Ana is free to take English lessons at a local church, lie on the beach at Coney Island, see a movie at Radio City Music Hall, go dancing with Cesar, and imagine the possibility of a different kind of life in America. When Juan returns, Ana must decide once again between her heart and her duty to her family.

Great book, about a young female Dominican immigrant in New York. The audio has an excellent author interview at the end. The book is based on the author‘s mom‘s experience, who thought she was so ordinary and boring. (Anything but!) Also, interesting to see the racial tensions between multiple groups, all while important movements are ongoing (in the 60s). Definitely worth the read.

Read this in one sitting today. It opened my eyes to a culture I admittedly know little about and broke my heart wide open. There are no quotation marks which I normally HATE but I soon didn‘t care. In addition to following Ana‘s journey in the U.S., we spend a lot of time in post-Trujillo period in the Dominican Republic, another subject I was woefully uneducated about. Because of that this is my #politicalintrigue pick for #booked2019. 5 HUGE ⭐️

It really bothered me that the author didn‘t use quotation marks. I know that doesn‘t bother some readers, but I felt like it disturbed the flow for me. It was an interesting story, but it never really wowed me.

A little torn—I love a story about a young immigrant trying to make her way in a new place & make a life for herself within the strict confines she finds herself in. Ana is brave and bold and admirable in many ways. But the writing style felt a little...young? Granted, she‘s 15, but it felt a bit too simple. And I was a little uncomfortable with how different identities are portrayed. Still a quick & enjoyable read, with some NY nostalgia. 3/5 ⭐️

I‘ve trained all my life. Pretend, pretend, pretend. Pretend the whippings didn‘t hurt. Pretend I was listening. Pretend to care about the stories Juan told me and that I loved him. Pretend that I was happy about leaving my house in Los Guayacanes.

To hell with pretending. Yes, I say. Yes.

I was contacted by Good Morning America to do a video book review for their pick of the month, Dominicana by Angie Cruz. My footage didn‘t end up being used, but regardless I will still advocate for this book! It is such a strong read, it‘s a rollercoaster of emotions that had me crying at the very end. This is a must read, especially for today‘s social issues around immigration.

I love that this cover is so simple and yet has these couple little details that draw your eye. Also I do love me a book about a woman escaping a shitty dude, and I‘ve heard many rave reviews about it. #nowreading

Being Dominican I feared this book was not going to speak to me, because even though I am familiar with the story it was not my family‘s experience.

But it spoke to me in so many ways. It gave me a glimpse of what my Mom‘s life could‘ve been if my grandparents, who were farmers just like Ana‘s parents, had chosen a different path for their daughter. 5⭐️ #BOTM

Being a Latina, I‘m well aware of our culture, so there wasn‘t anything new to me in this book. I had classmates come back married over spring break. Had friend‘s parents tell them education was a waste. They just needed a husband. The book was perfectly fine. I just wasn‘t surprised by it at all.

I picked this as my #botm because I decided I‘m going to read more women of color (sorry old white dudes, but you had your time. Still love you jerks) I wasn‘t sure about this book at first, but fell in love with Ana and her story, there was drama, romance, politics and history all mixed with some delicious sounding Dominican food. By the last chapter, I didn‘t want her story to end.

It seems impossible, but it has already been a week since I took a house cat to the face! It has been a long seven days of doctor visits, hot compresses, and Bacitracin, but I am feeling so much better, and to celebrate, I am throwing myself a weekend readathon. So Pelvis is seen here modeling the latest in what I hope to read. What are you reading this weekend? 📚❤️📚

Loved this book!! Hooked me right in. Ana, a 15 yo Dominican girl, marries 32 yo-she immigrates to Washington Heights-it is a story of survival and strength. Inspired by author‘s mother. Mid 1960s.

Xena tolerated being a bookrest, I‘m shocked.
I‘m really enjoying this book, although, I‘m finding historical inconsistencies-e.g. there was no NYPresbyterian in the 60s. Columbia Presbyterian and NY Hospital were separate entities until sometime in the 90s, or early aughts, can‘t remember, precisely. Still, Im enjoying Ana‘s story.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! The writing was lyrical and richly descriptive, though the author did not utilize quotation marks, which may discourage some readers. The characters came alive and the story was completely believable; indeed I bet a similar story plays out in the lives of many real immigrants every day. Cruz's use of actual historical events adds even more to the feeling that this is a true story about a real young woman.

I captured the graffiti this time, which bodes well for my reading experience of this book! After much consideration, I went with this one. I liked the description and the reviewer‘s reaction to it. It was a tough choice between this and The Reckless Oath We Made, but I was jonesing for some historical fiction and a good protagonist.
