This was definitely not what I was expecting but I really enjoyed it. Rowell did a great job of equally making fun of England and America (there really are a ton of hair plug adds in Chicago) without being overbearing. 5⭐️

This book was very different from the first book! The gang goes on a road trip through America. I like how they thought Chicago was near San Diego and they‘re like, but it‘s the same country!

This was interesting. They meet and fight a lot of different magical creatures. I don‘t think I liked it as much as the first one, but it was still enjoyable.

I like these on audio.

peanutnine This one has so much more angst than the first. Definitely whole different vibe 3mo

I really appreciate when I can reread something and give it a higher rating. I love Simon, Baz, Agatha, Penny, and Shepard with my whole heart, and I just want them to be okay. They desperately deserve to be happy, and I also really need them all to go to therapy. Like, immediately.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Second book in the Simon Snow trilogy takes us out of England to the U.S.! They travel to Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, Nevada, and California hitting all states for #RoadTripUSA2022. I really love all these characters and loved watching them grow a little stronger after book one. Their encounter with magic and vampires in the U.S. was very intriguing. Another fun read! On to book 3!

Book number 2 in this trilogy. I can‘t say much without spoil the story. It was ok. I liked more the first book. However, at the time I read this book, I needed something light because the first books read this month where intense. So this book was silly, made me laugh and it was simple and light. I still love Baz but that Penny is so eccentric, and unique😂 3⭐️

What happens AFTER the big bad is defeated — and it‘s not all sunshine and roses. I really loved this exploration of what happens to the hero when heroics are no longer necessary, and the challenge of maintaining and building on relationships once their familiar circumstances have changed. More than coming of age, this is a story of meeting the wider world in all its harsh realities and it‘s beautifully told.

I filled a request for cranberry white chocolate scones while I finished rereading WAYWARD SON on audio. I‘m sad to report it didn‘t resonate with me as strongly as it did the first time, but I‘m pretty sure it‘s a mood thing. I felt the same way about CARRY ON when I recently read it for the third time, and that one WAS just as wonderful the second time through. #audiobaking

What a fun read! The second book in the series is set in the United States, as the characters learn about themselves and their failures. Leaving school gives you a real sense of where you are in your life and the author does a great job of learning to wrestle with what you thought you knew about yourself and reality of the new chapter your life takes after secondary school.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I really enjoyed this one too! 14mo

I‘d give this three and a half stars or so. Great dialogue and fun to see these characters in America for a change of scenery. The adventure itself seemed a bit sluggish, and I started to lose patience with everyone‘s self-doubt and internal struggles. Middle book syndrome, basically.

But! I still enjoy the characters, and I‘m curious about where Rowell will take them in the finale.

I had a lot of fun re-reading this in anticipation of the final book.

It‘s a fun adventure in the US filled with magic and vampires. What‘s not to like?

My heart does kinda tear in two because the two idiots on the cover (Baz and Simon) don‘t know how to communicate in their relationship, but that‘s life (and YA drama, and I‘m here for it, lol)

Alright Soooooo. Apart from the obvious reason of tension between a certain two characters, I liked this book.
The whole route 66 vibe, the exploration of what happens to hero when he doesn't feel like one and the complexity of relationships was amazing.
It's not AS good as Carry on but it's not bad either. I'd give it a solid 4.3/5.
I'm also really excited for the third one coming on July 6th and also very scared cause I hate endings ¯\(°_o)/¯

Our favourite cliqué returns to a story where trouble follows them everywhere and you're literally dying for more. I felt better connected to the characters because of the development of the story. Now that each one of the trio is coming into their own identities, the reader can find one they relate to and it makes for a much better story. I love to read their perspective on America and the plot was definitely page turning. 2/19/2021-2/25/2021

Simon‘s in a bit of a funk after the events of the last book, and Penelope gets the bright idea of an American vacation, check in on her boyfriend, stop in and visit Agatha who isn‘t returning her calls, and a road trip between the two... just what the gang needs! Watching the gang deal with America as tourists, and without the knowledge of the local magical rules was a fun, action filled joy ride.

Lindy Back in the 90‘s, when I still owned a vehicle, it was a truck. (My excuse: I grew up on a farm.) I picked up Guy Gavriel Kay and chauffeured him to the library where he was doing an author reading. He laughed when we got to my vehicle: “I love Alberta! Even the librarians drive trucks!” 1y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Lindy 😂That‘s great! That‘s really a great story. I live in farm country too, and it‘s mostly small family farms so lots of pickup trucks here, lots of farm and yard hauling, and 4-wheel drive for winter. 1y

I loved how realistically she handled this, the big battle ended, but that doesn‘t mean there aren‘t repercussions for everyone. Emotional fallout, depression. Simon lost a lot in the last book, mentors, parental figures, some powers... so I like that she tackled that head on, it makes for the best YA, how to “Carry On” when everything isn‘t what you thought it would be.

There are many ups and downs with this book. This book was defined by the author as a “middle book,“ so the events of this story aren't exactly as satisfying as Carry On. Even though they flowed nicely, I felt less inclined with the events and more the characters. Yet Simon Snow, one of the main characters, didn't shine through enough in this book. Yes, he lost his magic, but his magic doesn't define him! I wanted to read about him more.

keisha + The characters constantly told him that it wasn't his magic that made him important, and that he wasn't useless for losing it. Actually, it was heroic of him to sacrifice it, but the fact that Simon still doesn't seem to be the main focus of the story conflicts me. (I would add a lot more about my thoughts on this book, but there's only so much I can fit) 2y

Fantasy fiction
“Wayward Son“ is a continuation of “Carry On,“ and both books are written by Rainbow Rowell. Because I have been so fascinated with the plot and the characters like Simon, Baz, and Penelope, I wanted to see what happened to them after Carry On. I'm extremely intrigued with their personalities and I'm wondering how they will “carry on“ with their lives as they grow older.

I‘ve read this book before, but I just had to read it again. It‘s one of those books that you could reread a hundred times. Rainbow Rowell is definitely my favourite author-- I can‘t get enough of her writing. I‘m not much of a reader, but I waited impatiently for this book to be released and read it all in one sitting after I got my hands on it. The realistic characters, the different points of view… It‘s so good. (cont.)

jessicawatson This is the book following Carry On, where Simon, the main character, the most powerful mage, finds out he was never meant to be the magical heroic main character. He‘s just a normal guy. His journey ended. He graduated from school, his classmates went their separate ways. Everything was over. Instead of the author trying to drag on the story, she showed us what would‘ve really happened. 2y

Instead of the author trying to drag on the story, she showed us what would‘ve really happened. 2y
jessicawatson Simon gets depressed. His relationship with Baz, his boyfriend, is struggling since he was going to school. He goes to therapy after being in such horrible fights… Slaying dragons and whatnot would be pretty scary. He lives in an apartment with Baz and his best friend, Penny, who realizes she needs to do something about the slump that Simon has gotten himself into and help him and Baz‘s relationship. So, she forces them on a road trip to America. 2y
See All 9 Comments
jessicawatson They use magic for a lot of things they probably shouldn‘t use magic for, such as getting passports and a car for them to use, but they make it work. We follow them across America, a country they know nothing about, other than that Penny‘s boyfriend lives there, and so does Simon‘s ex-girlfriend. 2y
jessicawatson We get to see the characters just being themselves in the normal world and working through real life problems, like relationship issues, instead of all the mythical creature fighting and spell casting from before.
2y
jessicawatson If you like books about magic but still want to closely relate to the characters and the setting, this book is for you. The author‘s writing is just so real-- it always feels like you‘re there. It sucks you in. It‘s written in first person POV (my favourite), but we get the point of view of mostly all the characters in the book. 2y
jessicawatson The way the author switches between characters is one of my favourite things about her writing-- it‘s not awkward at all and makes it so much better. It usually switches every chapter, but sometimes it can even switch back and forth, like three times on one page. 2y
jessicawatson I love how It can add contrast. Like in this book, when we hear Simon‘s inner thoughts about how beautiful the view is, and then hear Baz‘s inner thoughts about how boring America is. The jumping between Simon and Baz is especially fitting, because the fact that they don‘t communicate well is one of the main problems in this book. Seeing their thoughts about each other side by side is really interesting. It‘s a must-read.
2y

I have to give this book a 4/5, I enjoyed the book, but it just wasn't as good as the first. The hidden romance in the first book was very cute, but this book it just seemed like they were screaming at each other all the time. And the adventure wasn't as magical as the first. I still enjoyed the book but just not as much.

I am not usually a fan of YA fantasy, but 🌈 does it in such a fun way, sort of in the same way Grady Hendrix lovingly spoofs 80s horror, that I can‘t help but love Simon and Baz (and Penelope and Agatha). Sign me up for number three!

When I read about Carry On (Harry Potter spin-off book series that characters in another one of her books reads) I had to read it just to see how she pulled it off. It was good.

But Wayward Son was wonderful. Except that it ends on a cliffhanger!?!? (I thought this was a duology)

3 20 year olds, a magician, a vampire, and a no longer magical guy with dragon wings go on a road trip across America. Funny but also poignant. Loved it.
