Shout | Laurie Halse Anderson
A searing poetic memoir and call to action from the bestselling and award-winning author of Speak, Laurie Halse Anderson! Bestselling author Laurie Halse Anderson is known for the unflinching way she writes about, and advocates for, survivors of sexual assault. Now, inspired by her fans and enraged by how little in our culture has changed since her groundbreaking novel Speak was first published twenty years ago, she has written a poetry memoir that is as vulnerable as it is rallying, as timely as it is timeless. In free verse, Anderson shares reflections, rants, and calls to action woven between deeply personal stories from her life that she's never written about before. Searing and soul-searching, this important memoir is a denouncement of our society's failures and a love letter to all the people with the courage to say #MeToo and #TimesUp, whether aloud, online, or only in their own hearts. Shout speaks truth to power in a loud, clear voice-- and once you hear it, it is impossible to ignore.

When it came to writing SHOUT, it was a whole lot easier to not have to shape things with fiction and just put it all on the table. Having been graced with the opportunity to talk about sexual violence and what I‘ve been through and listen to the stories of tens of thousands of people, that gave me the confidence that it‘s okay to talk about this. It‘s healing to talk about this and it‘s strengthening.

I believe you, I see you and #metoo.

It feels bad to give a low rating to this book given how personal the subject matter is to the author. I think my biggest issue here is that Laurie Halse Anderson is an incredible storyteller…in PROSE. These poems didn‘t feel poemlike at all, just like she split all her sentences in half and called it a day.

This is an intense memoir in verse, the story of growing up with flawed parents. Of rape, substance abuse, hardship and finding herself. Of becoming an advocate for others.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Damn, Laurie Halse Anderson is a force! This stunning free-verse memoir addresses her debut novel Speak in terms of her own childhood assault. In a series of stories, she expresses vulnerability, bravery, anger, clarity, and frustration. She‘s outraged - as she should be - by how little has changed in the 20+ years since Speak. We have to do better, teach better, and for god‘s sake, LISTEN.

Cinfhen Great review, Again!! #stacked 3y

This is the story of Laurie Halse Anderson‘s life written in verse. Her story of family, hardships, struggles, abuse, rape, substance abuse, survival, living again, finding her voice, speaking up, and becoming an advocate. There‘s so much in this book, I listened to the audiobook which Anderson narrated herself. Definitely a must read for all.

This book is so honest, raw, real and important. So many people have similar experiences of sexual abuse or rape and for them to read another person's story could be an important part of one's healing journey.

I broke my bookshelf challenge because I had to step out and buy a book, I could not stay home any longer so with all of the PPE ready to go, I went to Half Price and here was this book ready for me to read. I love this author, this book comes with a trigger warning for rape but it is wonderful book for those who have read her other books and have met her to say #metoo.

Texreader I‘m so anxious to get out to a bookstore, too. What to do, what to do... I‘ve only braved HEB and Central Market and darned people won‘t wear masks. 4y
freeatlast1137 @Texreader I feel like Half Price had a good policy going for customers: masks required, no more than 18 people inside total (bigger store, I think it's less for a small store) and one way lanes and no more than 30 minutes inside the store. I felt more safe in Half Price than I have since this whole thing started. 4y
Texreader @freeatlast1137 That sounds ideal. Except the 30 minute limit part. I didn‘t know that was possible in a bookstore 😂 4y
freeatlast1137 @Texreader Definitely, the thirty minute limit was hard especially since we haven't been in three months. I kept scrambling around trying to find a book while my husband held onto his new choice after less than 5 minutes of looking. 😅 4y

Readers will dive into the world of Laurie Halse Anderson and how her experiences formed the foundation of the novel Speak. She does not hold back as she explains the rape she endured in high school and the cascade of events her life turned into as a result of it. She also calls out society and how it continues to fail victims of rape.

This #audiobook is amazing. Here's why:

1. Read by the author. ❤
2. It's autobiographical. And she has an amazing story.
3. It's poetry.
4. Not very long.
5. She does voices. And talks in Danish. As needed.
6. She's from Upstate NY. ❤❤ (That last thing may only appeal to me. But it made it extra special from my POV.)

I expected this short book to be a lot better. It‘s a compilation of short vignettes about Anderson‘s life and a lot of other stuff. Problem I had with this one is that the vignettes didn‘t link well together. After a while it felt like reading ranting. Very disappointed in this one as my second read of 2020. I wouldn‘t recommend it.

TheBookHippie As a survivor I was hard pressed to not like it because I think this was therapeutic for her to write it, however I feel like you did in that it doesn‘t flow well and is anger fueled. I hope she is healed. When I read Speak I thought it was brilliant and she was healed I read this and thought maybe not. 🤷🏽‍♀️ 4y
BrownGirlReading @TheBookHippie Exactly! I read Speak to years ago and thought she was healed. It just sounded very angry and rants. The poor pacing doesn‘t help. I haven‘t heard anybody talk about it either 4y
TheBookHippie @BrownGirlReading I think people are afraid to “pan” it in the #metoo era. You‘re the first person I‘ve seen feel like I do. 4y

BrownGirlReading @TheBookHippie I haven‘t seen any reviews at all but I don‘t follow YA readers because I don‘t read very much YA. 4y
TheBookHippie @BrownGirlReading I‘ve only seen good. I read YA IF I think it will help me mentor “my” kids or help me with explaining things, an old white hippie being the sole mentor of young black men and women, along with Hispanic and Pakistani kids and all races but mostly no white is something I take very seriously. I take their lead- but sometimes a book can bridge the gap. They forever are teaching me -which is my life‘s greatest joy. 4y
Charityann I agree! I thought I would like it better based on some of the author‘s other works. I‘m glad to see I‘m not the only one disappointed by it. 4y
BrownGirlReading @Charityann It‘s really a shame because it could have been so good. 4y

This memoir told through poems had some quotes that really resonated with me. Overall, the book made me feel so uncomfortable, which considering the subject matter, it should, that it ultimately brought down my rating. Ireserve 5 stars for books I want to reread, and I never want to touch this book again. I'm glad that Anderson continues to share her voice, and I recommend this to fans of The Poet X.
