After watching Pink‘s TED Talk years ago, I enthusiastically added Drive to my list of books to read. This book was such a disappointment. Watch the talk and read the first chapter. Then bail before his incessant jargon rehashing studies other researchers have conducted numbs your mind.

MyBookSwapClub Oh..I've just started now! Was it too much research? 1y
ocdIrene @MyBookSwapClub If I remember correctly, he did focus a lot on research, but it was his repeating it that was annoying. Rehash after rehash with little new research. I do wonder if I noticed more repetition because I listened to the audiobook. I‘ve noticed that when authors repeat certain words or phrases a lot, it annoys me more in audiobook format. I think my eyes just scan right over the repetitions if I‘m reading print. 1y

This latest Scalzi novel did nothing for me. Even Wil Wheaton‘s entertaining narration could not save this reading experience. While the opening chapters pulled me back into Chris‘ world, I just could not get into this murder mystery. Maybe it was the sports angle or the corporate greed. Maybe it was the mix of characters. I did like the cat. For the last few chapters, I found myself not truly paying attention. Total meh.

When I heard that Dan Rather was publishing a series of essays on patriotism, I got a little giddy. OK, maybe a lot giddy! His unwavering faith in the power & spirit of individual Americans truly inspires. As an idealistic pessimist anything too sugary annoys me. His practical analysis strikes a subtle balance between criticism of aspects of our society, past and present, and celebration of American ideals. He gives the reader plenty to ponder.

Such a great listen! I loved the world building, all of the characters, and the vast majority of the plotting. A YA book that explores immortality without a single stinking vampire nearby! And integrates my fear of the Cloud into an AI consciousness that truly seems terrifying and oddly comforting as well. The ending leaves me wanting more. I will be reading the sequel, but not right away. Ive heard Thunderhead does end with a huge cliffhanger.

I‘m a few hours into this ten-hour plus audiobook. Some seriously screwed up world building that has me totally hooked! I had so many things this weekend that I needed to do that required me to concentrate, but every mindless moment was spent listening to this story. Can‘t wait to find more mindless moments!

Whee! What a fun thriller / mystery. Short choppy sentences. Cliffhanger endings at the end of chapters. Serious suspense that just doesn‘t stop. I loved this style of book when I was a kid reading under the covers with a flashlight past bedtime. The one downside was the awful narrator for the audiobook. Sounded Siri-esque. Otherwise, a solid popcorn read.

Interesting story about growing up in Iraq from 1959 to late 70s. You feel the author‘s heartbreak when she returns to Iraq in the 80s with much drastically change. Feel her frustration with stereotypes too. Specific pages are dedicated to traditions in Iraq. At the end, she shares fond memories of her childhood there as well. While she covers horrific events, the overall message focuses on one person mourning the country of her childhood.

Loved this sequel to Sunny Side Up where Sunny & whole family are coping with Dale‘s absence. Almost no focus on her academics during first year of middle school. I assume Sunny is one of those average kids who makes good grades, but flies under teacher radar. Instead we see family dynamic rich with 1970s pop culture: Brady Bunch, flag twirling, Steve Austin, and Gilligan‘s Island. Sunny learns how to cope with situations you have no control over.

Meh. The gritty world and fast pacing kept me reading. Girl cage fighting. Giant killer worms! A prison escape. All exciting plot devices. Unfortunately, I just didn‘t like most of the characters. Even though Saba was a kick butt female main character, her whining got on my nerves along with her country twang. Plus she was so incredibly mean to her little sister. I don‘t see me finishing this trilogy.

Author Becca Ludlum. Thin guide. 100 pages. If you know anyone who would want to start a blog, but would be overwhelmed by the process, especially the numerous choices you have to make, then this guide breaks down the steps into actionable steps. If you‘ve blogged, even a little, there won‘t be much here that will help you. You‘ve probably encountered the issues here and researched answers.

Rosario Dawson‘s performance had me liking Jaxx. Not an easy feat since Jaxx is basically Mark Watney except a female Saudi Arabian criminal porter who loves to narrate about welding. The pacing of the plot, even when convoluted, kept me listening. I finished this audiobook much faster than others I‘ve read, so that does say something about the fun factor here for me.

Teafiend Ha. Some other reviewers said the same. I‘ve just finished it but loved it. I haven‘t read The Martian (or seen the movie) so I don‘t think I was biased by the characters. 2y

Perfect book to hand to anyone who says graphic novels are fluffy silly super hero stories with no substance. Ten-year-old Sunny spends a summer with grandpa in FL because her parents are trying to help her older brother with his substance abuse problem. In flashbacks we see Sunny keeping her brother‘s secret. Has Sunny learned to speak up? That some secrets should not be kept? Great book for upper elementary and middle school kiddos.

If you like film noir, this adaptation is for you. Most of the art is black & white with intentional splashes of red and a few other colors. Story begins in 1918 moving through the Roaring 20s and Great Depression in the Big Apple of NYC. Phelan cleverly uses this urban setting to tell Snow White's story and explore class relationships. Snow's relationship with the "dwarfs" here is much more meaningful than the Disneyfied version.

I read this book & made six of the 101 recipes. Pups definitely preferred the recipes that included simmered chicken livers. While they scarfed up most of the food, the time spent preparing & cooking was just too great. I doubled every recipe; most would last for one day of meals plus one more breakfast for both dogs. Not sustainable long-term for an average dog mom. I've decided to cook for the pups a few times a month to add some variety.

Space opera snark! Scalzi's wicked humor read by Wil Wheaton enhances the political intrigue centered around the altering transportation system in this world. Three POV characters narrate. Two of these characters had interesting interactions & thoughts. The third character, Kiva, was so mouthy & "in your face" I couldn't decide how I felt about her. Curious to see where Scalzi takes this series. Not my favorite Scalzi, but enjoyable nonetheless.

Dr. Royal's almost conversational writing style makes this book a joy to read. She mixes her advice for wild health with various anecdotes from her years working with zoo animals, wild animals, and pets. Many stories are tear jerkers so have tissues nearby if you're prone to the waterworks. Her thoughts on euthanasia are particularly helpful and comforting. I don't know anyone who hasn't struggled with that decision.

Awkward writing. Like the author has never spoken to a kid. At one point, she has one factory making irons, texts, and pistols. I don't know a kid who wouldn't be distracted by the mishmash of that factory! Only people who don't bother to read the whole book would think it's pure propaganda. Definitions clearly favor communism, but the trials, which are examples, highlight cons. The point? History is open to suggestions. We need solutions. Think.

Lmstraubie I love The Three Questions (and pretty much all of Jon Muth's books). 📚💕 3y
ocdIrene @Lmstraubie I just read it...because kids book. WOW! I will be re-reading more thoughtfully over Spring Break. I suspect I'll be checking out more of his books. 3y

Look what came in the mail today! 🎉🎉🎉

Can't wait to pass out the bookmarks to my students. The certificate is actually the last page of the activity book that came with this kit. And the timing is perfect because Spring Break is next week. I'll have several kiddos who will give this a try over their break.

Lmstraubie Thanks to you I got mine a few days ago. I'm presenting the challenge to all my 3rd & 4th graders this week. 😊 3y
mjdowens I got mine last week! I gave a few things to someone I work with for her daughter. I then set it up in our break room. I think I saw only one button left today👏👏 3y
ocdIrene @Lmstraubie Whee! I love that their materials are for kids...no matter their age and including the young at heart. I need to see if they have an email newsletter...hmmm... 3y

ocdIrene @mjdowens That's awesome! I wonder how many people are thinking, "Well, I don't want to take the last button..." Someone will cave? 3y
CocoReads Awesome! 3y
mjdowens I never thought about that. I was too busy to check to see if it was gone. If not, guess it will end up pinned to my cubicle wall🤗🤗 3y

I know many of you are fellow bloggers. Anyone participating in the April #atozchallenge?

🤔Thinking about giving it a shot this year. If any of you participate, please let me know. Leave your blog URL in the comments. There's an intriguing Bingo card to encourage people to visit various types of blogs & comment. I would love to support other Littens taking part. 26 posts in a month?😬 Cracking some knuckles time!
