The Flatshare
The Flatshare: A Novel | Beth O'Leary
Tiffy and Leon share an apartment. Tiffy and Leon have never met. After a bad breakup, Tiffy Moore needs a place to live. Fast. And cheap. But the apartments in her budget have her wondering if astonishingly colored mold on the walls counts as art. Desperation makes her open minded, so she answers an ad for a flatshare. Leon, a night shift worker, will take the apartment during the day, and Tiffy can have it nights and weekends. Hell only ever be there when shes at the office. In fact, theyll never even have to meet. Tiffy and Leon start writing each other notes first about what day is garbage day, and politely establishing what leftovers are up for grabs, and the evergreen question of whether the toilet seat should stay up or down. Even though they are opposites, they soon become friends. And then maybe more. But falling in love with your roommate is probably a terrible idea...especially if you've never met. What if your roommate is your soul mate? A joyful, quirky romantic comedy, Beth O'Leary's The Flatshare is a feel-good novel about finding love in the most unexpected of ways.

It took me a while to get into this, but once I did it was immersive. I didn‘t want to put it down; I just wanted to read it all as quickly as possible. This isn‘t a romance, or at least that‘s not the most important part. Both characters have issues to work through but they‘re so good for each other, and the friend crew is awesome. I even loved the side stories. TW below, pretty significant.

ravenlee Gaslighting and severe emotional abuse, with some threatening violent moments toward the end (no physical abuse) 2w

Okay, I LOVED this book! I could not adore Tiffy and Leon‘s character more. I‘m going through withdrawals now that I‘m done and what I wouldn‘t give to go back in time and read it for the first time! A perfect light-hearted but beautifully written story that covers important topics.

Sweet story about a man and a woman who share a flat, but he only stays there during days while she stays there on nights and weekends (due to work schedules). It was a cute, romantic story.. but it seems I‘m one of the outliers who thought it was a little dull at times and dragged on. Still enjoyed it though!

2/100 (set a pretty lofty goal for myself 🤦‍♀️)

Tiffy and Leon share an apartment... but have never met. Due to work schedules and unfortunate situations, both find themselves in need of a roommate. While only communicating through notes, they become friends and support each other through difficulties. You root the whole time for these two. The story takes its time, but still a good pace. Witty banner with awesome secondary characters as well

Inspired by all of your year-end posts, I just tallied my 2021 numbers. It turns out that I read 85 books! Even though I read 195 or 196 books in 2020, I‘m counting 85 as a win because of a 6-month-long reading slump in the summer and fall. Lots of life changes this year (long job search, new job, move to a new state, bought a house, etc) plus the pandemic, but books and Litsy are my happy place. Here are my top 12 reads of this tough year. 💗

LiteraryinLawrence Tagged is my favorite, or at least in the top 3 of the year. Anxious People was right up there too. 5mo
BennettBookworm One of my faves of the year, too!! 5mo
Kempii I just finished Apples Never Fall and really liked it. I heard the book got some flack for being too long, but I enjoyed it all the way through. It was my favorite book by Liane Moriarty, which was a pleasant surprise. 5mo

Took me a while to get into this one. But my Libby loan was about to expire so I had to up my game. Have to admit the constant back and forth between narrators was a little hard to get used to. Overall, it was a fun romance and entertaining while I finished knitting my mittens.

A really heartwarming romance with some surprisingly hard hitting moments. It all came together to make me NEED this couple together in my bones. One of the healthiest relationships I think I‘ve read in a novel which made me a little teary at times - 2 people in difficult situations helping, respecting and entertaining each other in whatever circumstances. My favourite part which is actually making me cry rn in the comments with a spoiler warning

Emilymdxn My respectful king Leon understanding Tiffy‘s trauma around being interrogated and put on the spot by her abusive ex so he asks her to marry him in a letter telling her to take as long as she wants to think about it and find him whenever, including speaking to her friends who support her to get their blessing. Actually crying 7mo

One works nights, the other works days. They only communicate through post-its left around their tiny shared apartment. This was cute, but the side stories about her ex and his brother are intense. I'm all for romances celebrating the love between broke people who gotta shack up!

I really enjoyed this book with reservations. It made me smile real big and made me feel for our MCs. It dealt super well with surviving emotional abuse and it had so many great sub plots that really gave it substance! I loved that the author kept the notes going throughout the entirety of the story, it really worked well. Morality wise though? I‘d have to rate it a 1 star. It has quite a bit of cursing and sexual themes. No I‘m screen sex tho.

I‘m not a huge fan when it‘s from two character points of view but here it works. Very engaging. The dialogue is written in a format I‘m not used to but once you get into the story it doesn‘t detract from the reader‘s experience. I could feel Tiffy‘s anxiety when her ex showed up. Really good portrayal recovering from an emotionally abusive relationship. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I honestly love this author. She writes the best characters, fun romance, but also adds heavier topics with a good balance of addressing tough issues without overwhelming the fun side of the story. I really enjoyed this. I listened on audio and it had excellent narration. It is a romance but there is more to it as there is depth. One of the main characters is a hospice nurse and there is compassion. The two main characters are dealing with some hard things, but at the same time there is humor, bright colors and great friends. My second read by this author and I have enjoyed them both!

I loved this book more than I expected. It starts as an endearing and innocent little love story. What follows is a portrayal of abusive relationships that rings painfully true without being overly heavy or dark. It captures the sadness, self-questioning, gaslighting, trauma, and terror that escaping an abusive relationship can bring. For escapees left scarred by such relationships, this book gives us hope for better days and caring partners.
