The Hollow of Fear
The Hollow of Fear | Sherry Thomas
Charlotte Holmes, Lady Sherlock, returns in the Victorian-set mystery series from the USA Today bestselling author of A Conspiracy in Belgravia and A Study in Scarlet Women, an NPR Best Book of 2016. Under the cover of "Sherlock Holmes, consulting detective," Charlotte Holmes puts her extraordinary powers of deduction to good use. Aided by the capable Mrs. Watson, Charlotte draws those in need to her and makes it her business to know what other people don't. When her dear friend Lord Ingram stands accused of the murder of his estranged wife, Charlotte goes under disguise to help prove his innocence to Scotland Yard.

#ReadAway2024 #SeriesLove2024

I finished Book 3 in the Lady Sherlock series a couple of days ago & I‘m midway through Book 4. Not going to give many details because I think half the fun of these books is not knowing much going into them. (BTW this series is definitely a read-in-order one—otherwise you‘ll get lost.) This is my favorite of the three—the story is compelling with great twists & there‘s plenty of Holmes & Ash time. I ❤️ their banter.

Mahalo @Eggs for the #WondrousWednesday tag! 🤗

1️⃣ All time: Elizabeth Bennet, P&P. Lately Charlotte Holmes from tagged book/series

2️⃣ All time: Inigo Montoya & Fezzik, The Princess Bride. Lately Lord Ingram (Ash) from tagged book/series.

3️⃣ Currently obsessed with the Lady Sherlock series- tagged book is one of my current reads. Also listening to The Boy Who Cried Bear (new) Haven‘s Rock series + Litsy readalongs.

Have you played yet?

Eggs I read Enola Holmes series last summer - is this a different sister of Sherlock? 1mo
DebinHawaii @Eggs Actually she‘s a “disgraced” member of the ton who assumes the name of Sherlock Holmes & solves crime & sometimes acts as his sister. It‘s great! Start with this one 1mo
Eggs @DebinHawaii Thanks for the info 🥰 I hope to start this series this year😊 1mo

Good golly this was one hell of a ride. I think this is my favorite in the series so far. Seeing charlotte in so many disguises was a highlight, as was the structure of the plot - so well done- and the growth of the character of inspector Treadles. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is a “pick, but” book. I love the characters and it was a fascinating mystery with lots of twists and turns that I didn‘t expect. However, it had been a while since I read the previous book in the series, and it wasn‘t until I was halfway through that I felt I had a grasp on all the characters and the backstory. I‘ll probably read the next one relatively soon so it doesn‘t happen again.

My neighbour took pity on me and came round with a super power power drill. I now have a ceiling hook on the balcony and one in my bedroom.

Reading in the hammock-seat is on!!!

So looking forward to enjoying some me-time and the last days of the #NutsInMay swaying in this seat.

@Andrew65

Ruthiella I thought all Germans owned a drill! There‘s so much DIY required in every apartment. 😆 3y
Cathythoughts Very nice ! 3y
julesG @Ruthiella I have a drill. But it just didn't have enough power for the nasty concrete that makes up the ceiling. I had to drill with a drill bit with half an inch in diameter. That's a job for a professional power drill. My neighbour is an electrician and brought the power drill from his job, which did the job in no time. 3y

I‘m really glad I was out of audiobooks to listen to and this series was available on audio!

This is the 3rd book in the series and it was so good! I got a little annoyed by the back and forth between the gossipy ladies at one point so I had to take a day break.

But I didn‘t see any of the mystery coming. I was very surprised. If I wasn‘t paying close enough attention I would have gotten confused by going back in time, but luckily I caught it

kspenmoll This is a great series! (edited) 3y

I‘ve been meaning to continue on with this series since I discovered it a few years ago. It was hard to get into the 3rd book, since it‘s been so long since I read the first two, and it‘s impossible to find a good summary of the second book anywhere on the internet. Overall, loved the character development and the interplay between the main cast of characters. But the mystery plot was way too convoluted for me to be invested in that component.

One of my unofficial goals of the year is to make progress on some of the many series I‘ve started. I‘m enjoying this gender swapped Sherlock Holmes a lot. Charlotte Holmes is a fun character. I like the pacing of the mystery along with the continuing parts of the series. Even Inspector Treddles gets some character growth in this one!

This is the third book in Sherry Thomas‘s Lady Sherlock series — another cozy mystery set in Victorian England. Charlotte Holmes returns, under the cover of "Sherlock Holmes, consulting detective”. Charlotte puts her extraordinary powers of deduction (it runs in the family) to good use, aided by the capable Mrs. Watson.

Another excellent update! This series is without a doubt my favorite Sherlock retelling. I‘m a huge Sherlock Holmes fan. I‘ve read and own all the originals. I also love the rewrites, and modernizations, and other adjacent works, but this series is something else. It is unique and perfect. I admire Charlotte, and adore her sister Livia who is prominently featured. I can‘t wait to start the next one! #sherlock #retelling

Wow, this third outing in the series had A LOT going on. When Charlotte‘s friend, Lord Ingram, is accused of/set up for the murder of his estranged wife, she must wade through a twisty bog of motives, revenge and hidden agendas to save his life. What I love most about this series is that in Charlotte we have a very complicated and unique heroine, who is by turns frustrating to the reader but also admired for her originality both as a woman and 🔻

robinb a detective. She keeps me enthralled with her brilliant mind, but exasperated at times with her idiosyncrasies. My only complaint was that the timeline towards the end was out of order and a little disorienting. And I was disappointed in not seeing more of the by-play between Charlotte and Ingram as their relationship took a different turn. 3y
robinb However I suppose what we did see is in keeping with their complex characters.
Thoroughly enjoyed and looking forward to the next one! 4.5/5⭐️

Book 69
I'm a sucker for Sherlock Holmes AND for stories inspired by him.

This is a fun twist where the main characters are Gender Swapped. I have particularly enjoyed that Ms Thomas does a good job showing the lack of freedom women had during that time period, being only the property of father or husband rather than their own person. A passing mention of women's votes was in this story too. Very enjoyable and I'm looking forward to the next.

Such a brilliant series - love Lady Sherlock! This book has all the key ingredients - cross dressing disguises, fake moustaches, manor house murders, female wit with a sprinkle of sexy, delicious french pastries and good humour. My one criticism (which was actually a comfort!) - is this feels more like a second part of the previous book in the series - as it's all connected to that story, rather than a new story. Minor quibble - love these books!

iread2much I love these books too! Such fun to read and really good writing highlighting how hard it was (and sadly still is) for a woman to use her genius and live her own life 4y

This series...I can't quite tell if I like it or if I'm just "meh" about it. I like that it's a gender-swapped Sherlock Holmes. I like that it's a Victorian woman carving out her own rules and life in a seriously restrictive time. And I like the traditional Sherlockian elements that are woven throughout. I just don't know that I like the mysteries. Which, when you're reading a book that's supposed to be about a mystery, is kind of the point.

This #audiobook served as something to listen to during a night of insomnia. For some reason, I can‘t quite get into this series. The plot in this one was so convoluted that it was very difficult to follow. At one point, I wondered why the author had chosen to base it on the Sherlock books. The parallels don‘t seem compelling enough to warrant it. Why not simply invent a new late-19th-century sleuth?
