The Map of Salt and Stars
The Map of Salt and Stars: A Novel | Jennifer Zeynab Joukhadar
This rich, moving, and lyrical debut novel is to Syria what The Kite Runner was to Afghanistan; the story of two girls living eight hundred years apart—a modern-day Syrian refugee seeking safety and a medieval adventurer apprenticed to a legendary mapmaker—places today’s headlines in the sweep of history, where the pain of exile and the triumph of courage echo again and again. It is the summer of 2011, and Nour has just lost her father to cancer. Her mother, a cartographer who creates unusual, hand-painted maps, decides to move Nour and her sisters from New York City back to Syria to be closer to their family. But the country Nour’s mother once knew is changing, and it isn’t long before protests and shelling threaten their quiet Homs neighborhood. When a shell destroys Nour’s house and almost takes her life, she and her family are forced to choose: stay and risk more violence or flee as refugees across seven countries of the Middle East and North Africa in search of safety. As their journey becomes more and more challenging, Nour’s idea of home becomes a dream she struggles to remember and a hope she cannot live without. More than eight hundred years earlier, Rawiya, sixteen and a widow’s daughter, knows she must do something to help her impoverished mother. Restless and longing to see the world, she leaves home to seek her fortune. Disguising herself as a boy named Rami, she becomes an apprentice to al-Idrisi, who has been commissioned by King Roger II of Sicily to create a map of the world. In his employ, Rawiya embarks on an epic journey across the Middle East and the north of Africa where she encounters ferocious mythical beasts, epic battles, and real historical figures. A deep immersion into the richly varied cultures of the Middle East and North Africa, The Map of Salt and Stars follows the journeys of Nour and Rawiya as they travel along identical paths across the region eight hundred years apart, braving the unknown beside their companions as they are pulled by the promise of reaching home at last.

I loved this story. There is so much going on. A legend of a girl centuries ago, a modern refugee story, the trials of travel and trust while female. Above all, the magic of family and our histories.

This is a great option for #readharder2019 task 18 too.

A beautifully written book from the perspective of a child, alternating with a folk tale her father told her. The girl and her family are refugees.

The Map of Salt and Stars is important (so important) right now in understanding the crisis in Syria and in understanding why so many people cannot stay in their countries and must flee. Nour‘s story is told alongside a fable that was passed down their family and it ultimately all comes together in the end. A beautifully written and important book!

How come people only ever have one language for grief?.... Mama used to say stories were how Baba made sense of things. He had to untangle the world's knots, she said. Now, thirty thousand feet above him, I am trying to untangle the knot he left in me. He said one day I'd tell our story back to him. But my words are wild country, and I don't have a map.

This was exquisite. A beautiful and complex novel that really brings to life the struggles of Syrian refugees. The story was action-packed and I could not put this down. I believe this a debut novel and I am excited to see what she writes next.

Moved back to Syria with her family, they end as refugees after their house is bombed and Nour almost dies. 800yrs ago 16yr old Rawiya must do something to support her widowed mother, disguising herself as a boy, she becomes apprenticed to the royal mapmaker. A solid debut about a refugee family fleeing from Syria in 2011, and all they have to give up along the way. I enjoyed this book, but not as much as I had thought I would. I had some problems with the plot, but overall I thought this was worth reading. Certainly should leave you with more compassion for the horrors endured by refuges when leaving their homeland.

Can‘t stop thinking about this book. 💗

“I don‘t get how you can draw a map without the blank parts.”

“Some people are born knowing they have to fill those places in. They are born with a wound, and they know from the beginning that if they don‘t find the story that belongs to them, that wound will never heal. Others take a long time to figure that out.”

12yo Nour sees the world through synesthesia, observing her sisters & mother after the loss of her father in 2011 prompts a move to Syria from New York (the only culture/language she knew). The girl‘s wisdom & the war-torn story both reminded me of the masterful writing of Bianca Marais who also paints an intricate story. Add in the adventure from Tomi Adeyemi with “banal” travel of Orhan Pamuk‘s— and you get Joukhadar, who has serious chops.

I was delighted to learn I have tomorrow off so I wanted to celebrate the holiday. But it took 5 stops at other bars post-work to find a place I can settle in to a chair in a room that is a dull enough roar for me not to want to pull my hair out.

Here‘s a query for you Littens: is it crazy to think I could establish a bar/bookshop designed for introverts/bookworms and be successful? Would you go out to a bar alone to read/drink & talk quietly?

Rachbb3 It's the best idea I've ever heard!! 👍🏼👍🏼❤ 13mo

Slajaunie Yes! 13mo
Billypar I've had this dilemma- it seems like an issue with crowded and loud versus dim. The first kind are impossible, but reading by tea light wears on the eyes, no matter how quiet and cozy. I would love a bar designed specially for reading. 13mo
Melissa_J Honestly, if I‘m looking for quiet I would just stay home rather than go to a bar, even one designed for introverted bookworms. That said, I would definitely go to a literary themed bar quiet or not. 13mo
SomedayAlmost Yes! Wine and quiet! My extensive research into my personal demographic suggests that mothers of kids under 10 appreciate wine and quiet reading time! 13mo
JHSiess Truthfully, I wouldn't go out. My kids are grown, my house is quiet. I have a lovely patio & lots of wine because I live in wine country -- last I heard, there are app. 85 wineries in Lodi! 🍇🍇🍇🍷🍷🍷 But it's a lovely idea & if I needed an escape, I'd be a customer! 13mo

Bookcation74 Yes! And it should have a patio! I hate that most places get pissy about a table for one on the patio 😡 13mo
Hollie I would definitely love to go to a place like that. I keep saying when I win the lottery I‘d open a bookstore/bar because we are a 3 1/2 hour drive one way to the nearest bookstore 👎🏻 13mo
KateFulfordAuthor Isn‘t that what a lot of bookstores do now anyway? Quiet reading spaces etc. 13mo
mrozzz @Billypar Yes! If I find a place that is actually quiet but has no light, I‘ll pull up an ebook usually. But it‘d be great to find a place that checks all the boxes 13mo
mrozzz @Melissa_J That‘s fair, of course. 🙂 I‘d want to create a space for people who want to go out on their own, or with a small group and actually hear others without shouting and not be overwhelmed by rowdy crowds. 13mo
mrozzz @JHSiess That‘s heavenly! I‘m jealous. Happy to hear you might check it out if the idea came to life 🤗 13mo
mrozzz @Leftcoastzen I just looked it up and I wish I wasn‘t so far from AZ!! 13mo
mrozzz @QuietlyLaura I would definitely offer plenty of caffeinated drinks, mocktails, and a delectable menu of small bites. And literary events 😊 13mo
LazyDays Yes!!🎉🎉😊😊 13mo
mrozzz @Bookcation74 DEFINITELY a patio!! And plenty of seating options catered to people who came alone! I‘m tired of feeling guilty for taking up a table for 4 when I‘m on my own 13mo
mrozzz @Hollie Yes!! I would definitely quit my job and pursue it if I happen to win the lottery. It can‘t be fun being so far away 😫 13mo
mrozzz @KateFulfordAuthor A few stores have cafes attached but they‘re not open late. Most bookstores don‘t have any seating, and if they do the chairs are uncomfortable & minimal 13mo
KateFulfordAuthor @mrozzz Mel: If you‘re seriously considering this as a proposition, I‘d test it out in a low risk way. At the risk of stating the obvious (!), look to find a venue that could be filled at a time when its otherwise empty (e.g. a cafe that isn‘t open at night), locate a few book clubs who need a venue that is interesting, a mobile food supplier and then broker a deal so that you make a bit of money and learn what works or not ... 13mo
mrozzz I‘m seriously considering, but not for a few years. This is great advice 💡😄 Thank you!! @KateFulfordAuthor I‘m often at Emma Straub‘s Brooklyn store (it just turned 1!) so I might try picking their brains as well. I mostly think I can‘t be the only one who feels a huge hole in nightlife options. I also play a lot of pool so that‘s a fun alternative, but I‘d love to be able to go out & be surrounded by books and other likeminded bookish people. 13mo
