Force of Nature
Force of Nature: by the author of the Sunday Times top ten bestseller, The Dry | Jane Harper
The gripping new novel from the author of the Sunday Times top ten bestseller, Waterstones Thriller of the Month, Sunday Times Crime Book of the Month, and Simon Mayo Radio 2 Book Club Choice, The Dry. FIVE WENT OUT. FOUR CAME BACK... Is Alice here? Did she make it? Is she safe? In the chaos, in the night, it was impossible to say which of the four had asked after Alice's welfare. Later, when everything got worse, each would insist it had been them. Five women reluctantly pick up their backpacks and start walking along the muddy track. Only four come out the other side. The hike through the rugged landscape is meant to take the office colleagues out of their air-conditioned comfort zone and teach resilience and team building. At least that is what the corporate retreat website advertises. Federal Police Agent Aaron Falk has a particularly keen interest in the whereabouts of the missing bushwalker. Alice Russell is the whistleblower in his latest case - and Alice knew secrets. About the company she worked for and the people she worked with. Far from the hike encouraging teamwork, the women tell Falk a tale of suspicion, violence and disintegrating trust. And as he delves into the disappearance, it seems some dangers may run far deeper than anyone knew.

This was a great book, better than The Dry I think. Anything can happen when a group of people get lost in the woods and panic.

I‘ve been doing pretty good at picking interesting audiobooks that I don‘t want to stop listening to.

I really liked the Dry and this one was a good mystery too. I typically only listen when I exercise, but found myself doing other things so I could listen!

#2019Book68
Five women walked into the woods for a company retreat. Only four of them came back out. This is how Force of Nature begins, and the suspense never really lets up until the end. The best part, though, is the ever-present feeling of claustrophobia, as though someone just might be watching from the darkness between the trees.

BridgetteM Sounds amazing! Stacked it. :) 3mo

Not my usual kind of book but when I saw this in the library last week I recognised it from Litsy and decided to give it a go. I enjoyed it. Aaron Falk's an interesting character, I didn't guess the plot, and it turned out to be a quick read for all its 450 pages: it grabbed me by the hand and pulled me along at a cracking pace!

This mystery takes place at a wilderness retreat, which I think counts as #camping. I‘ve camped out once in my life and it rained the entire time so I was miserable. This book doesn‘t make wilderness retreats seem attractive either, since this one includes a murder! I liked this book, but not quite as much as The Dry. #LetsTravelAugust

The next book in Harper‘s Aaron Falk series did not disappoint. Just like The Dry, Harper creates a strong sense of atmosphere. You can feel the trees and the darkness around you. I hope she continues with the series. #LitsyAtoZ #F

I didn't like it as much as The Dry, but still a very good mystery. I hope there are more Aaron Falk books in the future! These are my only two highlights...replace Alice with Katie, and you've got a good description of my sister. The second quote means a lot to me because of my dad's recent death. My family doesn't use the word 'love' often, or even know how to show it well, but it was there. The quote is reassuring during a difficult time.

My 2nd Aaron Faulk book. He's involved in an investigation where the woman who is assisting him on the inside goes missing while on an "experience" in the outback. Well written, great detail, very readable. I'm getting to like Faulk a little more, he staring to become more comfortable in his skin

Five coworkers go on a corporate team building hiking trip. Only four come out. The missing woman also happens to be the whistleblower in an ongoing federal investigation. While it had completely different pacing from The Dry, I enjoyed it just as much. I really like Jane Harper's writing style. The alternating chapters between the investigation and what happened leading up to the incident are great, and the characters are flawed, yet relatable.

This book switches back and forth between a corporate team-building trip during which Alice Russell has come up missing, and the investigation into her disappearance. I thought that this was less of a twisty mystery than a character study of how the women react when things go so very wrong in the wilderness, though Aaron Falk‘s investigation moves things along with plenty of red herrings.

I enjoyed this. Five women head out into the bush on a corporate team-building exercise, which turns out even worse than it sounds. Chapters alternate between the women‘s story and Aaron and Carmen, detectives with an professional interest in finding missing Alice. I particularly liked the backstories, the fact that their home lives were as messy as their work lives, & the sense of place. Only gripe - that cover is NOT where they got lost - is it?

I absolutely love Jane Harper! The 1st book in the #AaronFalk series was Falk‘s personal story along with the greater mystery, whereas the 2nd in the series is a general mystery, but pleasantly still has a lot of character development for Aaron. I loved the reveals of the mystery and were excellently paced. I hope Harper writes another Falk book one day.
