Force of Nature
Force of Nature: by the author of the Sunday Times top ten bestseller, The Dry | Jane Harper
The gripping new novel from the author of the Sunday Times top ten bestseller, Waterstones Thriller of the Month, Sunday Times Crime Book of the Month, and Simon Mayo Radio 2 Book Club Choice, The Dry. FIVE WENT OUT. FOUR CAME BACK... Is Alice here? Did she make it? Is she safe? In the chaos, in the night, it was impossible to say which of the four had asked after Alice's welfare. Later, when everything got worse, each would insist it had been them. Five women reluctantly pick up their backpacks and start walking along the muddy track. Only four come out the other side. The hike through the rugged landscape is meant to take the office colleagues out of their air-conditioned comfort zone and teach resilience and team building. At least that is what the corporate retreat website advertises. Federal Police Agent Aaron Falk has a particularly keen interest in the whereabouts of the missing bushwalker. Alice Russell is the whistleblower in his latest case - and Alice knew secrets. About the company she worked for and the people she worked with. Far from the hike encouraging teamwork, the women tell Falk a tale of suspicion, violence and disintegrating trust. And as he delves into the disappearance, it seems some dangers may run far deeper than anyone knew.

Jane Harper's writing pulls me in and makes me feel as though I'm experiencing the story with the characters and I just love that! The characters felt very real to me and the alternating chapters with multiple POVs worked well. I really hope there will be more Aaron Falk books in the future.

Another great novel by Jane Harper. This is the second Aaron Falk book and hopefully not the last. Harpers ability to tease a mystery out slowly over the course of a novel is astounding. This book held my interest from start to finish. Now we have to wait for the next one in this series ‘sigh‘

Five coworkers go on a corporate team building hiking trip. Only four come out. The missing woman also happens to be the whistleblower in an ongoing federal investigation. While it had completely different pacing from The Dry, I enjoyed it just as much. I really like Jane Harper's writing style. The alternating chapters between the investigation and what happened leading up to the incident are great, and the characters are flawed, yet relatable.

This book switches back and forth between a corporate team-building trip during which Alice Russell has come up missing, and the investigation into her disappearance. I thought that this was less of a twisty mystery than a character study of how the women react when things go so very wrong in the wilderness, though Aaron Falk‘s investigation moves things along with plenty of red herrings.

I enjoyed this. Five women head out into the bush on a corporate team-building exercise, which turns out even worse than it sounds. Chapters alternate between the women‘s story and Aaron and Carmen, detectives with an professional interest in finding missing Alice. I particularly liked the backstories, the fact that their home lives were as messy as their work lives, & the sense of place. Only gripe - that cover is NOT where they got lost - is it?

I really liked The Dry which was the first in the Aaron Falk series but enjoyed this second book even more. Five women go on a team building excursion in Australia‘s Giralong Ranges but only four return. Is the fifth woman lost in the wilderness or did something more sinister happen to her? This was a fast paced read with lots of twists and turns and was my letter F selection for #litsyatoz2019.

I absolutely love Jane Harper! The 1st book in the #AaronFalk series was Falk‘s personal story along with the greater mystery, whereas the 2nd in the series is a general mystery, but pleasantly still has a lot of character development for Aaron. I loved the reveals of the mystery and were excellently paced. I hope Harper writes another Falk book one day.

Okay, Jane Harper is officially a favorite of mine. I really liked “The Dry,” but I think this one was even better. I am always weary of books that alternate chapters between past and present, because it can be cumbersome to follow along, but this was really well done. 4 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

BookishMarginalia I really enjoyed it too 6mo
candority I know The Dry and Force of Nature focus on one detective. I don‘t typically like detective/cop-focused mysteries, but I‘ve heard really good things about these books! How detective-focused are they? And should I read them in order? 6mo
avgeyer @candority while Falk is the lead in both, the books go far beyond focusing on him. These didn‘t read like typical detective books for me. The Dry has a lot of backstory to it. And he almost feels like a side character in Force of Nature because of how the story is told. I say give them a shot! And yes read them in order, there are some things in Force of Nature that refer back to The Dry! 6mo
BookishMarginalia @candority I would go in order just for the principle of the thing, but from what I remember, they are not really connected, so either way works, unless you‘re a stickler for avoiding any and all spoilers (I‘m not) — @avgeyer and I disagree 🤷🏻‍♀️ (edited) 6mo

Second (after "The Dry") in Harper's series featuring Australian federal agent Aaron Falk. In this one Falk is investigating finances of a corrupt corporation when his key informant goes missing on a team-building retreat. The story isn't as personal as the first so stakes feel lower, and its organization feels gimmicky. Still, I liked it and will read the next.
