Little Book of Hygge: Danish Secrets to Happy Living
Little Book of Hygge: Danish Secrets to Happy Living | Meik Wiking
New York Times BestsellerEmbrace Hygge (pronounced hoo-ga) and become happier with this definitive guide to the Danish philosophy of comfort, togetherness, and well-being.Why are Danes the happiest people in the world? The answer, says Meik Wiking, CEO of the Happiness Research Institute in Copenhagen, is Hygge. Loosely translated, Hygge--pronounced Hoo-ga--is a sense of comfort, togetherness, and well-being. "Hygge is about an atmosphere and an experience," Wiking explains. "It is about being with the people we love. A feeling of home. A feeling that we are safe."Hygge is the sensation you get when you're cuddled up on a sofa, in cozy socks under a soft throw, during a storm. It's that feeling when you're sharing comfort food and easy conversation with loved ones at a candlelit table. It is the warmth of morning light shining just right on a crisp blue-sky day.The Little Book of Hygge introduces you to this cornerstone of Danish life, and offers advice and ideas on incorporating it into your own life, such as: Get comfy. Take a break.Be here now. Turn off the phones.Turn down the lights. Bring out the candles.Build relationships. Spend time with your tribe.Give yourself a break from the demands of healthy living. Cake is most definitely Hygge.Live life today, like there is no coffee tomorrow. From picking the right lighting to organizing a Hygge get-together to dressing hygge, Wiking shows you how to experience more joy and contentment the Danish way.

A lovely little guide to finding joy in every day.

I really quite loved this. I have dealt with depression for most of my life, and this was a welcome little reminder that there is happiness to be found in simple, everyday things. It‘s time with your family, it‘s that extra treat, it‘s surrounding yourself with softness and light and warmth. I‘m going to go spend some time with my nibling tomorrow. 💖 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

My friend gave me this book as a gift knowing that I struggle to get through the cold, rainy, dark winter months in the Netherlands. I like that this book itself creates a cozy atmosphere if you put your mind into it. It likens certain terms such as the Dutch "gezellig" to hygge and organized the sections very nicely to include all parts of the term. Definitely helped me get through winter!

I tried so hard. I wanted so bad to read this book and enjoyably learn something. But I couldn‘t. I think the whole concept of hygge is great. Do I need a book going in depth of it? Noooooo.

I'm going to try to get back into the habit of posting book reviews instead of just marking books as “read“! A very cute little book. I learned a lot about Danish culture/values and I loved the illustrations. My only gripe is that there weren't any creative ideas for cultivating hygge; most of the things mentioned I do already.

I realized last month that the only way I'm going to reach my reading goal for the year is with the help of audiobooks so here's the first of many audio reviews. Hygge (pronounced hyoo-gah) is a Danish concept of finding comfort and joy in simple things. I loved the insight into Danish culture and found the author's voice to be soothing and a huge help with the pronunciation. This was a cute, cozy, quick read that I could see myself revisiting 😌

#NaturaLitsy

Hi 👋
I'm so very excited to start off our very 1st #Midwintersolace event. The aim is to spend the next 20 days in the run-up to solstice in good company, relaxing, connecting & having fun. I'm so thrilled you've joined me & can't wait to get to know you all better.
Please leave a little introduction to yourself below, including how you feel about the holiday season, be honest. This is a space for warmth & support. ❤️❄️🎄⭐️😊☕️❤️

AmandaBlaze I'm closing in on my one year Litsy anniversary in January. I'm also part of LitsyLove, but I'm way behind in letters. My spare time is usually spent at the dojo, or local library. I'm uncertain about the holidays this year. My mom is at a physical rehab care center, and we don't know if she'll be home for Christmas. 1y
BookwormAHN @AmandaBlaze I'm also behind on LitsyLove and I have Christmas cards to do now as well 🤦🏼‍♀️ I hope your mom can make it home for Christmas. I know how it is to spend Christmas in those places from both of my Grandmothers, hugs. 1y
See All 62 Comments
BookwormAHN I will be celebrating both the Solstice and Christmas. The Solstice for me and Christmas with the family. Hopefully it will go smoothly but I have a feeling there is some Pennsylvania Dutch eggnog in my future 😸 1y
AllDebooks @AmandaBlaze I discovered Litsy this year too, so happy I did. I'm sorry to hear your Mom is needing rehab. Hope she makes a good recovery to make it home. 1y
AllDebooks @BookwormAHN December sounds like fun, family time for you. Smoothly or not, it's all about creating great memories 🙂 1y
TheBookHippie I am in year seven of Litsy! (I've been on 6.5 years) I celebrate Hanukkah, Solstice and Christmas as we are a multi-faith house. I spend joyous holidays with chosen family, a night with my brother and his family and hope to all things that are good that I don't have to see any in-laws. That's honest. I actually love the season! My little readers are pure joy this time of year. I try to give them all a golden book! 1y
sebrittainclark Hi there! I really enjoy the holiday season. This will be my 9 month old's first Christmas which is already making everything more wonderful and way, way more exhausting. 1y
julieclair I love the Christmas season, but I definitely have to battle the overwhelm that comes with it. My husband calls it “Christmas Panic”, lol! I love that this group will be a support in my efforts to have a more Hygge holiday season! 1y
BookmarkTavern Hello! I am of two minds over the holiday season. I love the celebrations, giving gifts, decorations, the baking, everything so much! But I also work for the post office and this is our busiest time of year, so I always end up spending less time with my family than I want. I‘m hoping to focus and enjoy the time I have with the people I love. 1y
rockpools Hi. I‘m looking forward to this year‘s holiday season, but…! It‘s my first year back in a public-facing library, so that‘ll be fun (I need to find/create a Christmas jumper by tomorrow 🤶🏼). But my family are split between those who LOVE Christmas and want to go all out, and someone who suffers extreme anxiety around visitors/occasions, and will resist anything festive - so it‘s always a bit fraught and a balancing act 🫤. 1y
IndoorDame Some years I celebrate Hanukkah Christmas and Solstice, some I don‘t don‘t particularly celebrate at all. This season I‘m making attempting to invite the holiday spirit in, but make it about self care and self awareness, not about family parties and dinners with friends, so #midwintersolace couldn‘t have come at a better time 1y
AllDebooks @TheBookHippie Lol, the in-law dodging us honest! 🤣 It is a busy time of year for all. It's important to spend the time with those you love, for enjoyment, not just obligation, imo. 1y
AllDebooks @sebrittainclark oh happy days ahead for you. Having a little one to make it all exciting for is an absolute blessing. Mine are all teens now and not so bothered, unless there's cold, hard cash 🙄 1y
AllDebooks @julieclair I hear you. Reducing the overwhelm side of things was exactly what I had in mind when planning this. 1y
AllDebooks @ozma.of.oz it is an insane time of year. I hope you have relaxing evenings and hang onto your Christmas spirit. I swear if I worked in retail, I would lose my s**t over the Christmas songs day in day out 1y
AllDebooks @rockpools that is a balancing act!!! I think anxiety levels have soared since the pandemic. It does make it difficult to socialise 1y
AllDebooks @IndoorDame that's great to hear. I hope we can all get each other through the hols with sanity intact 🤪 Who knows, sprinkled with a little fun & frivolity too, for good measure 😉 1y
AllDebooks I'm a single parent to 4 teens and it's their year with their Dad, so Christmas will be x 2 this year. One for me and my family, another when my kiddos are home. I do love this time of year and can't wait for them to finish school. I also have my eldest child's birthday, so lots to celebrate 🍾 💗 🎉 1y
wanderinglynn I‘m an attorney in DC & this is my 7th year on Litsy. I mixed feelings about the holiday season. On the one hand, I love the decorations, the feel, the joy, the giving spirit, the lights. On the other, I dislike the crass commercialism, all the ads, and outshines to buy things. I also dislike it getting dark at 5. I‘m single (no kids) so that does make it easier—I can do as little or as much as I wish. 1y
Dilara I've been on Litsy for 2-3 years. I like the idea of Christmas (“hygge“, decorations, quality family time, chocolate on tap 😜) more than its real-life avatar, which involves too much running around and consumerism. I think our Christmasses are low-key, especially compared to what some Americans and Brits get up to, but I live with an anti-Christmas curmudgeon who claims I overdo it. I get most of my Christmas fun online, to avoid setting him off. 1y
bnp I'm single, living near Atlanta, GA USA. I have mixed feelings about this holiday. I usually try to enjoy one concert. I enjoy the light decorations, and wish it wasn't dark before I get home. My father died this spring & due to scheduling issues my family is gathering on New Years, so I am feeling a little lonesome. I won't spend the day alone, I'll be with friends for dinner/afternoon, but . . . 1y
ElizaMarie Hello. I have been so fortunate to have found Litsy (no concept of time, so I don't know how long it's been but a few years at least). I have been using my time to engaging calm, quiet, and rejuvenation. I moved away from my family (so it's just my husband and me some 30 hours north of our family), so our lives are all about our fur babies and us. It's very low drama at home. 1y
ElizaMarie @bnp I am so sorry you are feeling lonesome this holiday season. When I did travel nursing (and spent the holidays alone), I would spend time trying to remember some traditional things I remembered from my childhood. Or ... watching silly cartoon movies. I hope you find something that makes you feel warm and cozy. 1y
ElizaMarie @ozma.of.oz Ooo, I can't imagine how busy you must be this time of year! But... it's like you are a real-life Santa helper! (edited) 1y
AnnR With my current profile, I've been on Litsy since June 2022. I had joined when Litsy first started, but the app for Kindle didn't work well and there wasn't a web version available.

As with most holidays there are parts of the Christmas season I enjoy and others I don't. I think between Halloween and New Year's can be stressful for various reasons. Sometimes I'd like to see less focus on materialism and more focus on chilling-out and being kind.
1y
Blackink_WhitePaper Hi thank you @AllDebooks for this great idea. 💐 it feels good to connect with right minded ppl😍 I am in Litsy from past 3 years. I am from India. Here we don‘t have actual winter / cold ,and no holidays. But we enjoy Christmas time & esp new year. December is my fav month , bday month. I enjoy reading about your winter adventures looking forward to it 😻 1y
AllDebooks @wanderinglynn I agree, the commercialism really makes me queasy. I refuse to buy stuff that no-one needs, or get into debt to make sure everyone has a present. That's not what the holidays are about at all. For me, it's about doing what makes you happy, with people that make you happy and not piling pressure on each other. 1y
AllDebooks @Dilara this did make me giggle. The yin and yang of Christmas spirit, as it were. I sympathise, my Dad is very similar and doesn't bother with any of it. 1y
AllDebooks @bnp I'm so very sorry to hear about your father. That does make for a difficult time. I do believe it's important to acknowledge your grief and his absence. I still do this for my mother and she died 20 years ago now. Just because she's gone, doesn't mean she's forgotten or not present in our thoughts and memories. I hope you have plenty of family and friends to take care of you and each other. x 1y
AllDebooks @ElizaMarie I love the sound of your calm, rejuvenating pastimes. Fur babies are life, very much at the centre of family life. There is nothing more relaxing and calming than snuggling up to a beloved pet imo. 1y
AllDebooks 💯@Ann_Reads one of the main reasons I wanted to do this was because I know how conflicting this season can be for some. Not just all the festivities and obligations but weather, short days, SADS, etc. It's a lot to deal with. It was important to me to reach out and bring a little light and fun to distract from all the other stuff going on. Being kind is my mantra. 💯 agree with you on the materialistic nonsense. 1y
AllDebooks @Blackink_WhitePaper it's been an absolute joy to plan all this. It's certainly kept me busy and out of trouble. Warm weather sounds lovely. Please excuse my ignorance, but do you celebrate anything like a winter or summer solstice in India? So glad you're joining in the celebrations and enjoy the month. 1y
BookmarkTavern @ElizaMarie Seeing the Santa letters come through is definitely one of the highlights of my job. ❤️ 1y
Blackink_WhitePaper @AllDebooks In India we follow lunar & solar calendars. Therefore we have festivals for all the changing seasons. In Jan we ve a festival to celebrate solar cycle transition. Winter esp in NoV & Dec v celebrate Festival of Lights where we use earthen lamps. School holidays falls in summer, (April onwards till June) This is the best part of the year for kids, & coincides with Hindu new year. We stay in South India & blessed with optimum weather😅😇 1y
Catsandbooks Christmas is my favorite season! I love the lights, joy, and magic of it. But it also makes me a bit sad because I'm far away from family and don't have any children. I always try to make the most of the season with my husband and my furbabies and enjoy the traditions we have. I wish we had a child to share it all with though. It's been almost 5 years of trying. I think sometimes I try to plan a lot to distract myself from this missing piece. 1y
AllDebooks @Blackink_WhitePaper celebrating all the seasons seems very apt. I might take that up. I do love Diwali, it's so pretty 😍 1y
AllDebooks @Catsandbooks that does sound tough. Mixed feelings about the holidays do seem to be quite a common thread. X 1y
ElizaMarie @AllDebooks My husband and I just adopted a cute little black kitten. He isn't ready for cuddles yet, but I am hoping that he will join me in bed with the doggies and books soon enough 1y
AllDebooks @ElizaMarie oh I love black cats, bet he's a beauty x 1y
TheBookHippie @Catsandbooks oh my love. I have been there and I‘m sending you all the love in the world!!!!! ♥️♥️♥️♥️ 1y
Bklover Hi! I‘m late joining this but wanted to say hello. I‘m 63 and I am in my 7th year in Litsy. I had my third (and last) child at 41, so I have just very recently become an empty nester (I‘m divorced). I love Christmas, it‘s always been my favorite time of year, but this year‘s tough. I just rejoined Litsylove, and I‘m hoping to get more involved. I‘ll take part in what I can! Litsy has been important to me for a long time! ❤️❤️❤️ 1y
Catsandbooks @TheBookHippie thank you Christine! Sometimes it seems like me having a child is so very far away. 1y
AllDebooks @Bklover hi and welcome x I have mixed feelings about my children leaving. I know it's coming. I'll be sad for them to leave home but equally excited to see what they do with their lives. Are y 1y
AllDebooks 🙄( too soon)...you around others over the holidays? @Bklover 1y
TheBookHippie @Catsandbooks My first child is the result of an assault. I did not have my son until almost 18 years later. I did UIU- IVF-10 years of that-no pregnancies- I had 5 miscarriages, one ectopic pregnancy that almost killed me. It is a very very lonely journey and even though I had that for my journey it in no way says I truly understand yours, but I am and will be thinking of you as it is so unbearably hard to articulate what it is like. hugs. 1y
TheBookHippie @AmandaBlaze I think we are all constantly behind on litsy love, I just keep at it. :) 1y
TheBookHippie @IndoorDame I am definitely cutting waaaaay back I am only doing two outings one to my brother and one to the bookshop. I am too worn out and there are too many germs and I want to enjoy the season. 1y

TheBookHippie @bnp I am so sorry to hear of your loss, grief is seemingly more difficult I feel this time of year. I hope you enjoy your dinner with friends. 1y
TheBookHippie @Blackink_WhitePaper I'm so happy your joined Litsy!! I love hearing your input on reads! 1y
TheBookHippie @BookwormAHN seriously aren't we always behind on Litsy Love??? HA. 1y
IndoorDame @TheBookHippie it‘s hard to find that perfect balance of making sure you look after yourself but still enjoy. It sounds like you‘re finding it though 💙 1y
Catsandbooks @TheBookHippie oh wow I am so sorry your journey was so difficult! Thank you for sharing with me. It is very lonely, even my partner doesn't understand sometimes. Thank you for your love and support! It means a lot! 💕💕💕 1y
Bklover @AllDebooks I will have my daughters and their partners here sometime around Christmas. My son won‘t be here though. It‘s just me, so we try to work everyone‘s families in somewhere. Last year we (for the first time) did no gifts. It was perfectly wonderful and we had a lovely Christmas. This year we are doing gifts again, but very few. I‘ve never spent the Christmas season alone, so my motivation is low! 1y
BookwormAHN @TheBookHippie Yes and the moment we get caught up more letters arrive 😸 1y
AllDebooks @Bklover maybe you could take the time to treat yourself to a few lovely 'gifts', plan a self-indulgent day pampering & doing exactly what you want x 1y

I thought this would be the perfect cozy read for January, and I was disappointed! This book felt like all filler. It was lots of predictable yet unrealistic lists. Yes, I know candles and tea create good atmosphere. No, I cannot take a trip to Copenhagen right now. I read Wintering by Katherine May last January and this did not compare!

The book started out interesting, then started getting repetitive. It could have been much shorter. But I was happy to learn more about hygge. I like the concept and the book inspired me to light more candles. 😊

Book #25 of the year: “The Little Book of Hygge” by Meik Wiking

I READ A HAPPY BOOK! Go, me! Michael got this for me last winter and I finally got around to reading it. It‘s delightful and I loved it. With insights into Danish culture and the science of happiness, Wiking created a warm welcome into hygge for the rest of the world. I look forward to incorporating these guidelines and recipes into my life, and just in time for julehygge!

Such a fun read! Gave many ideas on how to improve the hygge in your home🙂 definitely gonna try a few tips❤️

AkashaVampie Ok a weird question.... but what the hell is Hygge??? Haha 3y
451Degrees @AkashaVampie it‘s hard to define but it‘s like a sense of comfort that‘s influenced by your surroundings and experiences. It‘s very popular in Scandinavian countries. For example a warm and oversized sweater is considered hygge or candles instead of overhead lights! 3y
AkashaVampie @451Degrees oh ok. Thanks sweetie. I have seen the word around before but never got to look it up. I will have to check the book out. 3y
451Degrees @AkashaVampie oh yes of course! It‘s a great read if you‘re looking to make your home space a bit more comfy and welcoming! 3y
AkashaVampie @451Degrees we don't really have people over... we mostly stick to ourselves (and this was before covid too), but it would be fun to try and change things up. 3y

Easy to pick up this book here and there. While I‘ve read most of these concepts about hygge in articles, learning more about the nuances of this tradition, emotion, state of being from a Danish author was well worth my time. At the end of the book, he refers to the Danish welfare state as one of the main reasons that Denmark consistently ranks high on happiness surveys. Makes me want to read the The Almost Nearly Perfect People.

Cortg We promoted a lot of the Hygge concepts at our libraries this winter for teens and adults. There were several counties, including ours, that hosted Meik Wiking in a Zoom presentation in February. It was a big hit. Unfortunately, I was working that day/time. 3y
DogMomIrene @Cortg That sounds amazing! I see me reading more of his books. I‘ve been rotating in different books about happiness, health, or longevity to my reading routine. Helps keep me focused on developing those good habits. Totally see the value in targeting teens and adults as a library. 3y

😲 This tradition for children‘s birthday parties gives some context for the gruesomely vivid details in Nordic and Scandinavian murder mysteries. Not that I haven‘t loved every Nordic and Scandinavian murder mystery that I have read. But wow, cutting the throat of the gingerbread man? I thought decapitating animal cookies was harsh.🤣

A nice reminder to slow down and make the most of what we have in abundance everyday. Be in the now, be content and be grateful.
It‘s a pleasant surprise that I‘ve already embedded many those Hygge drivers in my home and living. What‘s significantly missing is: more cakes in the office (post covid) and work less! 🥲

I personally didn‘t enjoy this. I always have a hard time getting into non-fiction and this was one that i could not continue reading for maybe more than five minutes per session. Maybe I‘ll give it another chance another time. But I don‘t think I‘m in the right headspace at the moment to do that.

It is a good book to learn about different culture & different community. Though few hyggie ideas were impractical to tropical countries, it has many inputs for a happy life. It illustrates the Importance of relationships, journal writing & being with nature. I appreciated the solid scientific evidences mentioned in this book. I listen to this audiobook & author‘s own narration made it a good listen. 3.5🌟

wanderinglynn I‘m curious, what kinds of suggestions are impractical for tropical living? (I live on a sub-tropical island.) (edited) 3y
Blackink_WhitePaper @wanderinglynn I mean sitting by the side of fire, cozy blankets, and things to do during snowy winter. 3y
wanderinglynn Ah, yeah none of that on a tropical or subtropical island. 😆 3y
TheAromaofBooks Sometimes a fake fire is nice... we have a little electric “wood stove“ & you can set it to be just the flames with no heat & somehow it makes a gloomy day feel cozier!! @wanderinglynn 3y

Seemed appropriate for today, with about two feet of snow on the ground and more falling.

I received a lovely mystery package in the post last week, and even though I *thought* I‘d posted on Litsy about it, I most definitely hadn‘t, which was very remiss of me. Thanks for getting it to me so quickly, @Karkar ! I‘m enjoying my first swap very much so far. It‘s a good time of year to get fun mail. #bookcupidswap @candority

Karkar Woo hoo so happy it arrived safely!!! 3y

Nothing like starting the new year with a dose of hygge. The hubs and I are embracing all things hygge this year and it brings such joy and warmth to an otherwise dark and dreary season. Loved all the tips in this book that helped round out a sometimes vague definition of the increasingly popular term.

marleed Such a beautiful pic! 3y
