The Flight Attendant
The Flight Attendant: A Novel | Chris Bohjalian
From the New York Times bestselling author of The Guest Room, a powerful story about the ways an entire life can change in one night: A flight attendant wakes up in the wrong hotel, in the wrong bed, with a dead man - and no idea what happened. Cassandra Bowden is no stranger to hungover mornings. She's a binge drinker, her job with the airline making it easy to find adventure, and the occasional blackouts seem to be inevitable. She lives with them, and the accompanying self-loathing. When she awakes in a Dubai hotel room, she tries to piece the previous night back together, already counting the minutes until she has to catch her crew shuttle to the airport. She quietly slides out of bed, careful not to aggravate her already pounding head, and looks at the man she spent the night with. She sees his dark hair. His utter stillness. And blood, a slick, still wet pool on the crisp white sheets. Afraid to call the police - she's a single woman alone in a hotel room far from home - Cassie begins to lie. She lies as she joins the other flight attendants and pilots in the van. She lies on the way to Paris as she works the first class cabin. She lies to the FBI agents in New York who meet her at the gate. Soon it's too late to come clean-or face the truth about what really happened back in Dubai. Could she have killed him? If not, who did? Set amid the captivating world of those whose lives unfold at forty thousand feet, The Flight Attendant unveils a spellbinding story of memory, of the giddy pleasures of alcohol and the devastating consequences of addiction, and of murder far from home.

Good but a bit overrated. Kind of redundant with character having the same thoughts over and over, i.e. could I have done this?

***My review for this book is on the comment area. A 6 part of a satire I wrote as an example of the reasons why I didn't like the book. Just for FUN! 😂
My personal opinion. 🙂👍 ⭐ 1 star
*If you're reading this, read the first 6 comments below to fully understand.
There's a word limit. I can't post the full text in the description. My apologies

WJCintron PART ONE:
I grab my bottle of water resting over the mahogany table to my left, and take a long sip from it. A refreshing one, that washes all my thirst away along with the procrastination I've been carrying like a chip on my shoulder for the last couple of weeks. I sit on a desk chair, allowing my body to fill every diameter, inch and empty space available for my body to rest. My skin, adhering to the cold leather of its tapestry.
5mo
WJCintron PART TWO:
No, I'm not naked, but the shorts I'm wearing allow me to enjoy the soothing breeze coming from the air conditioner working at full blast. It may be fighting against the three-digit weather outside. I guess Autumn is still on lockdown...
Funny how this is a gamer's chair, which I've never used for the specific purpose it was manufactured.
5mo
WJCintron PART THREE:
You may ask why, and the reason behind it, is the simple fact that it has a longer measurement on the back rest which protects my back as well as my neck. I finally look up at the screen. My laptop rests over my thighs. The heat emerging from it, somehow contrasting with the cool texture of the cushion underneath my legs. Then, I focus on the illuminated monitor in front of me and write the last three letter acronym of my review.
(edited) 5mo
See All 9 Comments
WJCintron PART FOUR:
The DNF acronym, blunt in nature, appears to stare at me as the text cursor blinks non stop right beside it. Somehow inciting me to elaborate the meaning of each and every letter. I could care less, so I let my creativity run loose, thinking of tons of words that could follow those letters, like: Do Not Forget, Do Not Fail, Do Not... Until the F bomb reaches my tongue and I'm forced to remember the primal motive of this message.
5mo
WJCintron PART FIVE:
I need to get the frustration out of my chest. Immediately, I regroup and slide the cursor over the bright blue # 4267B2 color of the 'Post' button on the bottom of the pop up window. I let it linger for a couple of seconds, checking it twice, but never ever minding if I'm being naughty or nice. Then I cringe, while stabbing the hell out of the keyboard with a single press of my index finger.
5mo
WJCintron PART SIX:
For a millisecond, the screen goes blank, until the message appears triumphantly in front of me. I feel much better now. I shared my opinion. My precious personal opinion. My eyes sparkling as they stare at the beautiful one yellow star rating below the title.

“The prettiest of them all!“ I exclaim and reach for a better book to read.
(edited) 5mo
WJCintron THOUGHTS:
GOOD GOD!
YES! This is a satire. I'm narrating what I did while writing a review for the book. TOO Wordy, and to me an unlikeable MC. I couldn't bear almost 12hrs or extensive descriptions. Not my cup of tea. BAIL!
(edited) 5mo
Traci1 It's hard to like a character who is just one big bad decision after another. 5mo
WJCintron @Traci1 Yup! She was so unlikeable! An alcoholic, promiscuous brat. Not like Beth, The Queen's Gambit's MC. She also was an alcoholic, drug addict and stubborn character. But you fall in love with her and root for her. Walter Tevis did an amazing job bleeding her out. 😃 5mo

Book 95🎧
12hr listen and kept me interested the whole time👏🏻
I won‘t lie, I wanted to shake the main character silly sometimes😂 Not my typical thriller choice but I very much enjoyed it!

A flight attendant and a passenger get a little too friendly, then things take a bloody turn🩸Is anyone really who they say they are?

WJCintron Sounds like fun!! Thanks for sharing, I think I'll listen to it soon! 😀 🙏 5mo

Fast paced mystery/thriller with an unreliable narrator. I found myself caught up in the story and curious about where things would end.

Although this isn't my favorite by Bohjalian, it was still a great escape for a few hours. Now I'll have to try out the TV series.

An alcoholic flight attendant wakes up in a hotel room in Dubai next to a dead man who's obviously been murdered. That's how this compelling psychological thriller begins. It's definitely a slower burn, and that didn't bother me at all.

Recommend if you like the trope of the somewhat unlikable character (or at least one who makes poor decisions consistently) finding themself in an unlikely, dangerous situation that they must navigate.

OutAndAbout We really enjoyed the HBO Max series based on this one! 9mo

Just okay. I get a little frustrated with self-destructive characters but it wasn‘t just that which kept me from fully enjoying this book. I guess it didn‘t quite feel like a mystery or a thriller to me. It also seemed to progress slowly and then speed up at the very end so the pacing could have been better. Not a bad read but I‘m glad I didn‘t spend money on it and waited for the library hold.I won‘t be watching the show. Just not for me 😐

AlaMich I‘m watching the show right now. It got off to an interesting start, but it‘s kind of a mess now. Subplots that have zero to do with anything, and the main plot is pretty confusing. 11mo

Compelling story of an alcoholic flight attendant who inadvertently gets caught up in foreign intrigue when she wakes up in a strange hotel room and the man she slept with is dead. I seem to have a habit lately of reading books about people I don‘t like.

Just found out this is now a series on HBO Max, with Kaley Cuoco playing Cassie. Too bad I don‘t have it.

Jan 2021 - read before I watch / general fiction with a little mystery thrown in - Not sure I will watch the show based on the book. Entertaining story, disliked the characters but I think you‘re supposed to, and generally had it figured out. Friend who suggested the TV series was blindside by the twist. The book had it laid out.

I would never have picked this book for myself. I read this for #LMPBC and thought it was marvelous. The MC is a total mess. An alcoholic with a pension for self destructive behavior. When she wakes up in a hotel in the UAE next to a guy, who was a pick up in a long line of pick ups, that is now dead, it all comes to a head. 4⭐

TheLudicReader Have you watched the series? 12mo
TheSpineView @TheLudicReader No. I didn't even know there was a series. 12mo
TheLudicReader @TheSpineView , yep, in Canada it‘s on Crave, but it was an HBO production. 6 or 8 episodes and really well done, but I haven‘t read the book. 12mo

It was pretty good. Definitely a different concept and I appreciated that the main character was an alcoholic-you don‘t see women portrayed that way very often. Just watched the series on HBO Mac and it was pretty good too. Different than the book, but I liked the differences.

This was between a “pick” and “so-so” for me. The premise was great, the setting intriguing, and the characters dysfunctional enough to be interesting. There were even a couple of great plot twists that kept it suspenseful. However, the story got bogged down in a few places and could not hold my attention. Also thought that the story was a bit anticlimactic. I guess I expected more. This is a flight I would not be sad if I missed. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Jillylovesbooks I haven‘t had a chance to read the book, but I did catch the series based on it on HBO. My understanding is that some changes were made from the book that improved the story. I enjoyed the series. 12mo

Just finished the book on audio and am in the midst of watching the series. Seems to be an unpopular opinion here, but I didn‘t love this book and am not particularly loving the series either, though I will follow through to the end. An intriguing base story line, but too convoluted with the spy element and I just really don‘t like the main character at all. I generally like Chris Bohjalian, but this one missed the mark for me.

swishandflick I read this when it first came out and wasn't a fan either! I think I'm just completely over plots that hinge on the memory of someone who is constantly blackout drunk. 13mo
Bookish.SAM I really disliked the book too! But I watched the series and while it was still a little convoluted (and I was constantly trying to remember back to what the heck happened in the book) I did end up liking the series better than the book. 13mo
