Fledgling: A Novel | Octavia E. Butler
Fledgling, Octavia Butlers last novel, is the story of an apparently young, amnesiac girl whose alarmingly un-human needs and abilities lead her to a startling conclusion: she is in fact a genetically modified, 53-year-old vampire. Forced to discover what she can about her stolen former life, she must at the same time learn who wantedand still wantsto destroy her and those she cares for, and how she can save herself. Fledgling is a captivating novel that tests the limits of "otherness" and questions what it means to be truly human. From the Hardcover edition.

Brilliant use of the vampire thriller format to address issues of xenophobia and racism, as well as to propose relationship alternatives to the nuclear family. A compelling #audiobook narrated by Tracey Leigh. #LGBTQ #ownvoices #genesplicing

The main character, Shori, is part vampire (Ina), part human, but other Ina question her "Ina-ness" because she has human DNA. I love stories that twist our traditional understanding of folklore and use supernatural elements to explore the question of what it means to be human. I need to read more Octavia Butler!

Octavia Butler‘s last book before she passed in 2006, “Fledgling” is just as interesting and clever as the rest of her work. I love how she was able to twist vampire-lore in compelling ways. Honestly, her vampires, the Ina, make much more sense than the traditional mythology of vampires. 🧛‍♂️🧛‍♀️

A gorgeously written vampire story that kept me up way past my bedtime.

A young girl wakes in a cave with no memory of who she is or how she got there, but with a powerful hunger that only blood can satisfy.

In her creative twist on vampire legends, Butler explores the need for connection, the use and misuse of power, and the toxicity of racism. And though there‘s nothing too graphic, it‘s sexier than I expected.

Highly recommended!

This was good, just not what I wanted. I‘ll take my vampires by way of Salem‘s Lot Thank you very much. Shori, an 11yo looking, 53yo vampire wakes up amnesiac in a cave. We come to find out her families have been murdered. This would make a great supernatural episode of Law and Order SVU because we go quickly from a crime to courtroom drama because the vampires have their own form of trial by council which one vampire suggests is better than 👇🏼

Reggie human trials because it is based on truth rather than tricks and tomfoolery but then the vampire trial almost immediately devolves into tricks, tomfoolery, AND an extra murder. So anyways, it was good just not what I expected. (edited) 9mo

AmyG I have trouble with Buer‘s books. And yes, give me a SK vampire any day of the week. 9mo
MaleficentBookDragon @RamsFan1963 I agreed. I have a fundamental problem with Twilight or Vampire Diaries type vampires. So, you're 200 years old, yet a 16 year old girl is your soulmate? Super pervy and creepy to me. I prefer my vampires to be SK or like the ones in Blade or 9mo
Reggie @RamsFan1963 yes, evil, vicious, and dangerous, please. Here they were just racist. And it was suggested they might be alien which totally took me out of the vampire game. 9mo
Reggie @AmyG I loved, loved, loved, Kindred by her. Salem‘s Lot is my favorite Stephen King. Small town taken out by the most evil vampires....loved it. Lol 9mo
Reggie @MaleficentBookDragon well in here, there‘s a lot of discomfort in reading about the 11yo looking girl and how she picks her human symbionts. 9mo
AmyG Ha! I had so much trouble with Kindred. Drove me nuts. Yet I find Salem‘s lot totally believeable...and I loved the movie with David Soul. It‘s one of my favorites of SK. (edited) 9mo

It was good. I loved the main character, the history and culture of the Ina, and the story itself. I struggled with the sexuality of the main character (visibly a child but actually 53 years old) because of my own experiences and that made it too difficult to really fall into the book. If you like vampires, read it. It‘s worth it. But a heads up that it can be challenging to CSA survivors.

I wanted so much to love this mother of Afrofuturism. This was the book in her oeuvre whose premise spoke the most to me in terms of a more subtle weaving of the black experience into a conventional spec fic theme. It is certainly a brilliant take on vampires and she definitely shows her worldbuilding abilities. But why, WHY the gratuitous pedophiliac theme?!? I can think of a dozen other ways to explore the theme of sexual power dynamics.

I have mixed feelings on this. Was it an interesting take on vampires? For sure. Was I invested in the story and characters? Mostly. Was it disturbing to have the main character look like a child and act like an adult? At times. Did I get incredibly bothered by all the typos and grammar errors? YES. My first experience with Octavia; I‘ll definitely give her work another go, but I wasn‘t crazy about this. I expected more. #bowie #catsoflitsy

Reggie Please, please, please, try Kindred. It‘s my favorite of hers. 13mo

I really liked Kindred and so I had added a bunch of Octavia Butler to my TBR - figured Halloween season was the best time to tackle her vampire novel but YIKES y‘all this was... not good. The pacing is all over the place, the characters are flat as hell, and I don‘t care if the squick factor with Shori‘s age/appearance is ~supposed to make us uncomfortable~ it‘s not something I‘m okay with having portrayed as acceptable.

Palimpsest Hmm, I‘m curious about how a director might tackle the intimate scenes in a movie adaptation of Fledgling because even though she is ancient her body physically looks like she‘s ten. I had to read this for a science fiction and gender class and I actually found that disturbing. (edited) 2y
Liatrek @Palimpsest Yes, I agree that would be a struggle but I loved that books take on vampires and I think it's one of those aspect that could be removed and not impact the story. 2y
Palimpsest @Liatrek it‘s not to say that I didn‘t like the book because I did. Shori was awesome and I thought it was original. I think that it would impact the story somewhat as being with her partners was how she fed and thrived and it also showed the calming effect she had on them as well. It was symbiotic. I agree with you that it would make an intriguing film! (edited) 2y

I was really excited for this as I loved Kindred soooo much, but it didn‘t quite do it for me. Some thrilling moments and an interesting examination of racism, and miscegenation among other things, but the pacing was very uneven due to all the exposition and character set up. The next book in the series might have been much better if Butler hadn‘t sadly died 😢 This makes two books down from #MountTBR this year. Too bad I also bought two books 😳

This was Butler‘s last novel and it was the beginning of something special. This was such an interesting and in depth look at a society of vampires known as Ina, whose history goes back thousands of years. I thought there was great world building and great character development. This isnt my favorite Butler novel but I did really enjoy and am glad I read it! I wish there were more.

I really, really loved the concept of this book and had high hopes that it would be great but instead it was just okay.

The main issue I had with Fledgling was it read like a prequel to a longer series. It read as if Butler was doing an exercise in creating a unique vampire community and was fleshing it out by telling the origin story of a young vampire. There was just a lot of background explanation. Which was interesting but not engaging.

TheNextBook Starting now! I‘ll keep you posted. 2y

Since, I've started listening to audiobooks I've been curious about how long it takes me to read a book (in hours and minutes). So I've started to time my reading. Does anyone else keep track of this.
