The Haunting of Ashburn House
The Haunting of Ashburn House | Darcy Coates
71 posts | 64 read | 103 to read
People whisper rumors about a family slaughtered at Ashburn House. They say its old owner, Edith, went mad in the building, and that restless ghosts walk the halls at night. When Adrienne arrives on the gothic houses doorstep, all she has is a suitcase, twenty dollars, and her pet cat. She doesnt know why her estranged Aunt Edith bequeathed Ashburn to her, but its a lifeline she cant afford to refuse. Adrienne doesnt believe in ghosts, but its hard to rationalize what she sees. Strange messages have been etched into the wallpaper. Furniture moves when she leaves the room. And a grave hidden in the forest hints at a terrible, unforgivable secret. Something twisted and evil lives in her house, and Adrienne must race to unravel the decades-old mystery before she becomes Ashburns latest victim. Fans of The Conjuring and Stephen Kings The Shining will love this chilling novel.

I consider this novel a slow burn of suspense. I didn't find it scary but definitely interesting. 3 💫💫💫 It's predictable, the main character inherits a house from a long lost relative and it comes with surprises. #BookSpinBingo #20in4 @TheAromaofBooks @Andrew65

Oh man I LOVED this book! It was everything I wanted from a spooky book. Mystery, likeable characters, intrigued. Just enough spookiness that I was gripped but not terrified. I will definitely read more from this author! #horror #mystery #thriller #atmospheric

*OUABC Halloween 2020 Scary Pick*

This was a highly anticipated read for me. It reminded me of Danielle Vega‘s writing; I felt the spookiness from the first page. This played out like a movie for me. I‘m looking forward to reading more of Darcy‘s books in the future, especially around fall/Halloween time

The Haunting of Ashburn House by Darcy Coates

I LOVE haunted house stories! But sometimes they have have more swearing than I can handle. So I loved that this one was thoroughly creepy while still being a pleasant read. I‘ll definitely be reading more from this author.

I forgot to do this one too!
This book was not what I expected and I loved it. The main character and set up is similar to that of Blackwood Manor; A girl gets a cool scary house and is isolated. After that, it's a different story. Coates again manages to take away your safety nets and make this a truly scary story.

Nov #BookSpinBingo @TheAromaofBooks Book was in my tbr so I'm glad I read it. It was from ok to so-so. Adrianne will inherit this house where some strange things happened since she arrived. Why are these things happening? What is her relation with Edith? Is Adrianne in danger? There are spooky, creepy and gross scenes which I liked but there are parts that reminded me "Thriller" from Michael Jackson which don't scare me, I laughed instead. 3.4⭐️

Gissy Love the gifts in this box, specially the book Dracul, wow a second book in the box; and, those keys😍Love them!! As someone said here in Litsy, they are good items for next Halloween decorations! 1y

I save spooky #audiobooks to listen to this time of the year- and while this one is a fast and engaging listen, it just wasn‘t as spooky as I had hoped. Adrienne unexpectedly inherits the creepy house in a small town- & it isn‘t long before she‘s seeing messages carved into the walls and eerie happenings in the surrounding woods. Wolfgang the cat is the hungry hero here, & there are a few unexpected turns to the plot. #AudioColoring

daisyheadmaesie Ohh, what‘s Once Upon A Bookclub? Is it a subscription? 1y
CocoReads @daisyheadmaesie it is a subscription. They have adult and young adult options. You get a book and usually 3-5 wrapped gifts that you open on certain pages. A few times a year they give you the option of ordering special boxes (for October they had both spooky and sweet ones—I ordered both still waiting for my sweet box). Right now regular monthly boxes are experiencing huge shipping delays 👇 1y
See All 6 Comments
CocoReads Because they use a fulfillment center to shop them and it‘s not working well but they‘re hoping to move to a bigger space and start shipping everything in house. So my regular October box won‘t be shipping until November but I‘m enjoying it anyway. You also have the option of skipping a month as long as you let them know by the billing date. 1y
daisyheadmaesie Cool! I‘m gonna check them out! Thanks for the info. :) 1y

I'm concerned for our main character's sodium levels because it feels like ALL she does is eat instant noodles. This is skippable...just...boring and predictable with a flat main character who exists at the same level of complexity as a lot of C Horror movie victims. The cat's great though...

Third book of that I read from the author. The first time I thought-oooo creepy. Probably due to there being a cat involved. Wolfgang, you fluffy beastie. Again, simple linear read. Girl in bad spot financially, inherited house. Moves in, scary stuff happens. Cat. Scary stuff comes to light-Fin. I say this is a easy starter for scary stories.

abookishbutterfly @Godpants I totally understand. I don‘t do many scary books. I almost think I need to though.

This book was a fun read, I just wasn‘t much of a fan of the protagonist. The writing wasn‘t the greatest, and I struggled real hard with the internal monologue BUT when the scary parts happened, I was definitely freaking out and was super glad I finished it in the day.

I‘d probably try another of her books, but I‘m not rushing to do so any time soon.

I have to share a funny story with you all.
So I got on Litsy one morning and the first post I saw was about Darcy Coates‘ books. I didn‘t look very hard at the post. I just glanced.
Later that day I went to Barnes & Noble to read my current book. I wasn‘t looking for a specific book. I literally went there to find a comfy chair and read. I glanced over at the shelves and who‘s books did I see? Darcy Coates.
So of course I bought one. 😂

Another Darcy Coates book, another haunted house. A young woman inherits her great aunt‘s house. There are no mirrors, creepy paintings, and stories of a gruesome murder. She is isolated there without a phone and of course some strange things start happening. I appreciated that she took care of herself-yay for girl power. Not my favorite by the author but entertaining as always. I love reading about things that go bump in the night.

I‘ve decided not to judge based on how scary the story is but by how well the story and characters are written.
