Twenty-five scary stays where ghosts check in, but don‘t check out.

This was interesting. Historical backgrounds and paranormal accounts of different hotels around the world.

Kind of an odd book. Boylen isn't that much older than me, but grew up in such a different world, it's hard to make sense of all the pieces of her memoir put together. I found myself questioning, “is this real?“ a lot. But she has a dry, Vonnegut-esque sense of humor, and there's an underlying poignancy that touched me very much. It's interesting as sort of a period piece and heartbreaking as a story about family.

In those days, my friends and I listened to everything--classical, traditional Irish, Javanese gamelan, cool jazz, Indian raga, Frank Zappa, Gregorian chants, Rahsaan Roland Kirk. The only thing completely off our radar was disco, which we assumed appealed exclusively to the stupid. Inevitably, it's disco that people now associate with the era of my adolescence.

Mehso-so

With an unusual premise— 20 years earlier, something strange happened to the 8 houses on Velkwood St— only three 20 year olds survived and the rest seem to have instantly become ghosts & no one can enter the vicinity… except for the three now women. Talitha agrees to return for research… and because the past weighs heavily on her. Part ghost story & part love story, there are some creepy moments but nothing was believable enough to be scary…

Susanita I had one of those phones! 2mo
TorieStorieS @Susanita Hahaha! I have been clearing things out of my dad‘s basement and couldn‘t bring myself to put it in the donation pile! It‘s a little spooky looking so I‘m going to figure out a Halloween spot for it, hahaha! 2mo

Ughhhh. This had so much potential. Talitha Velkwood still reeling from a tragic event 20 yrs ago gets an offer to go back to her haunted street she left. That piece of haunted street that exists in its own reality separate from our own. One only Talitha and 2 other girls can enter. It could have used more characterization, I‘m not a fan of going back and forth between places where nothing really happens or gets moved forward. I did like her 👇🏼

Reggie writing ability to write about and around something without giving it away but that got old real quick. I would like a lesbian to tell me what they think about this book. Loved the ending but didn‘t enjoy the journey. Mehhh 4mo
sarahbarnes This definitely sounds intriguing. Sorry it sounds like it fell short for you. 4mo
Reggie @sarahbarnes AND it won the Bram Stoker award for best novel this year!!! thank you, Sarah. 4mo

LeahBergen Oh, too bad! 4mo
Suet624 It‘s even more disappointing considering it won the award for this year. 4mo
Reggie @LeahBergen it probably didn‘t help that I listened on audio and the girl reading it was fully embodying the character sounding depressed and on Xanax or something. And it was a bright sunshine day and I‘m on vacation. But rainy day Reggie still would have thought meh. lol 4mo
Reggie @Suet624 sometimes Denzel wins the Oscar when you want it to go to Russel and sometimes Russell wins the Oscar‘s when you want it to go to Denzel. 🤷🏽‍♂️ 4mo
Centique I love your comment about what rainy day Reggie would have thought 😝 4mo

stretchkev Yeah this was something I gave up on, thought maybe too early. Now i don't feel so bad.

The Bram Stocker has been kind of meh this year.

Reggie @stretchkev you made the right choice. It was a soft sapphic love story dressed up in a weak, weak, story. I haven‘t read the rest of the nominees. But my hopes aren‘t high after this. 4mo

Ghostbusting! 👻 Wish I would have discovered this in October. Lots of interesting historical background on the supernatural craze of late 19th to mid 20th centuries.

I recall my grandmother saying at one time her family members went to some type of fortune teller/seer, which would have been within that period. Can‘t remember why, but in my mind it‘s connected to something about money hidden within the walls of the house.
