My goal this tear is to get through at least 1/4 of my tbr list!!! But the problem is I keep finding others and adding to the list quicker than ticking them off 😁😁😁😁

sblbooks I know the feeling. 2w
Curiouser_and_curiouser Ha! Me too!! Often browsing titles is what I do inbetween (or instead of) reading actual books! My TBR is way to big for my time left on this earth, lol. 2w

I have read nearly everything Philippa Gregory has written, especially in this series and time period. But this one was hard to push through. Slow moving, annoying repetition in the character development... meh.

Do you listen to audiobooks? If so, do you count them as “reading”? I only listened to two books in December, but they were both enjoyable. 🤓

DGRachel Yes and yes. 😊 13mo
Laura317 I listen to audiobooks all the time while I‘m tidying the house or driving. I count them as books. 13mo
Schnoebs Yes, especially because the vast majority of the time I follow along with the hard copy 13mo

Birdsong28 Yes. I wouldn't get through half as many if I didn't. Also I have been able to listen to the Outlander series without having to worry about space as they are #chunksters 13mo
Slajaunie Yes indeed! I drive to work and they are my only saving grace. They are a type of “reading”. You are enjoying the written word read aloud much like young children do. 13mo
Susanita Oh heck yeah. The input is different, but it‘s working the same part of your brain, or something like that. 13mo
Penny_LiteraryHoarders Yes, of course listening to audiobooks is reading! I love them! 13mo
RavenLovelyReads @Laura317 That‘s the best time to listen! 13mo
RavenLovelyReads @Schnoebs yes!!! Best of both worlds!! I do that as much as I can too! 😊 13mo
RavenLovelyReads @Birdsong28 wow!! Maybe I‘ll try doing that with that series. Those books are monsters! 😇 13mo
RavenLovelyReads @Slajaunie Agree!! It‘s a treat when the reader is fun to listen to 🤓 13mo
RavenLovelyReads @Susanita Really??? That‘s great to know!! 😄 13mo
CouronneDhiver I count them into my reading numbers... about half the time, I read along with the print copy in hand 13mo

I love Philippa Gregory. I‘ve read/listened to her books for a few years now, but this book is difficult to listen to! These ladies make one bad decision after another... I just want to climb into the story and ask “have you learned nothing about the queen?!? You really think marrying without her permission is a good idea?!? Really?!?!” Grrrr!! So frustrating!

I have only read one or two other Philippa Gregory books and thought they were so-so but I really enjoyed this one! Maybe it was because the characters were more familiar, or because I could relate better to the characters, but either way, I thought it was great!

First Philippa Gregory I have read for ages and really enjoyed the story of the unfortunate Grey sisters. As ever whilst she takes a fair amount of literary license it is always interesting to see the forgotten player of history - especially the women. I also enjoyed the more critical assessment of Elizabeth here (which may not be to everyone‘s tastes)

I really enjoyed this book, I devoured it in a matter of days. I'm a sucker for all things Tudor-related. This book is written from the perspective of the 3 Grey sisters, Jane, Katherine, and Mary after Edward VI dies young and leaves the throne of England empty and the battles the sister fight to survive in the vicous and fickle royal courts. (Note, it helps a lot if you already have basic Tudor knowledge, if not, it could be a bit confusing.)

Disappointing. All 3 main characters were extremely unlikable. The way they each attacked and hated Queen Elizabeth I was annoying and not well done. They all just repeated the same phrase over and over. Got old fast. Though I have enjoyed so many of Gregory‘s books, I wouldn‘t recommend this.

This one is going back on the TBR stack despite being halfway through and enjoying it. I have so many books I want to read right now and I intend to read the Plantagenet and Tudor books in order from start to finish during summer break and so will be reading this then and may as well just wait rather than reread it so soon. I‘ll finish watching The Duchess and then it‘s off to sleep. #booklover #bookblogger #historicalfiction #tudors #bibliophile

My TBR is turning into a mountain and fast. I‘m feeling overwhelmed and crowded under as my TBR has never been this big before! How do you manage your TBR? I don‘t know whether to reshelve in order to be read or make a reading journal list of an order to read them all, whether to make smaller TBR piles or what!? What do you do? Advice needed. #booklover #bookblogger #bibliophile #bookaddict #mounttbr

StephanieGeiser I have a pile in order of deadlines on my nightstand so I know what needs to be read next. 2y
jfalkens I started a tbr jar for my to-read and to-read incomplete series, I don't always use it tho. I try not to stress over the size of it and instead enjoy what I'm reading. If I'm not enjoying a book tho I have no issues bailing and starting something else. 2y
See All 20 Comments
TrishB I just have physical piles everywhere and hundreds on my kindle and none in any order! Love it like that 💜 2y
Sophoclessweetheart @jfalkens It‘s never been a thing that bothered me before but after donating away all my read books that I won‘t read again I‘m left with two bookcases full of books I need to read. 😅 I have no issues either though with bailing on a book I‘m not enjoying or get bored of. Hah! 2y
Sophoclessweetheart @TrishB I have OCD so that would drive me to madness. I have to have them all clean and neat and shelved evenly and any that don‘t fit have to go 😳 2y
TrishB All my actual read books are categorised and shelved, but my tbr is definitely in the organic side.... 2y
jfalkens @Wanderingwithwords I have two over-flowing tbr bookcases too. I definitely found that bailing with a book I'm not feeling definitely helps thin down the numbers, as well as not keeping books you aren't going to read again. Otherwise I try not to stress and still get new books 😆 The upside is I rarely worry about running out of books to read 😂 2y
Centique I make a mini list on my phone just for the year ahead - I can cross some off, move them around, have a theme for the year etc. The full TBR is too big to play with like that for me! And yes, bail and delete as much as you need 😊 It should be enjoyable more than a chore 👍 2y
StephanieGeiser @Wanderingwithwords LOL yes! Deadlines like when they are due back to the library or when I have to mail them for one of the Litsy book clubs I‘m in. 2y
ReadingRuby I wrote them all on little pieces of paper and put them in a jar to be picked from to choose my next read. The only problem is I keep buying new books and want to read them instead of what I pick from the jar.... 2y
Sophoclessweetheart @TrishB Organic! 😹 Love That. 2y
Sophoclessweetheart @jfalkens That is an upside I always look at. And it‘s relieving to know I‘m not the only one with so many books. 😹 2y
Sophoclessweetheart @Centique This is the best advice I‘ve had. Bail and delete, don‘t stress, make the list smaller. Thank you so much! 💛💛 2y
Sophoclessweetheart @StephanieGeiser Ahh! Yes. That makes sense. All my books are my own though. No deadlines lol x 2y
wanderinglynn My tbr are several stacks on the floor around my desk (which would probably drive you nuts based on your earlier comment). The tbr stacks don‘t stress me because I look at books like good friends - you can never have too many. 😀 2y
Sophoclessweetheart @ReadingRuby I would do the same but I‘d buy more and want to read those too. And a lot of the time I have stuff I need to read for uni so they‘d have to come first and also I worry having a TBR jar would make it feel like a chore x 2y
Sophoclessweetheart @wanderinglynn Aww! What a very wonderful way of looking at it! I‘ve been looking more like the old favourites are friends and the rest are strangers I need to meet right away lol 😹😹 I should try to look at them all like that. X 2y
wanderinglynn And I agree with @Centique - reading is about pleasure. I used to feel guilty for bailing on a book, but now, I bail when when not enjoying it. Life‘s too short & there are too many tbrs to waste time forcing myself to get through 1 book. Bail & delete as needed. 2y
Sophoclessweetheart @wanderinglynn It‘s marvellous advice, thank you sweetie x 2y

Sophoclessweetheart @TrishB amazing choices! I don‘t know all that much about Eleanor of Aquitaine but I‘m eager to learn more about her! Boudica is fierce! X 2y
Weaponxgirl @TrishB Boudicca is wonderful and a local gal to me 😍 I love any fierce woman of history but Frida Khalo and Ida b Welles are also fave women who inspire me 2y
umbrellagirl St Margaret of Scotland, wife of Malcolm III. Her son, David I, is also a favourite but he isn‘t a lady. 2y
rubyslippersreads Anne of Cleves, because she got the best deal of any of Henry VIII's wives. One of my favorite historical novels is (edited) 2y
Sophoclessweetheart @Weaponxgirl Ooh! Some more recent women. Love that. I don‘t know very much about either though. Really cool that Boudica is local for you x 2y
Sophoclessweetheart @umbrellagirl Fascinating. I actually have never heard of either of those. How embarrassing. 😅 I‘ll certainly look them both up x 2y
Sophoclessweetheart @rubyslippersreads Oh! Fun choice. I find all of Henry VIII‘s wives interesting but I‘d say she‘s certainly one I know least about. X 2y
rubyslippersreads @Wanderingwithwords I don't think the novel is very historically accurate, but it's very satisfying. 😊 2y
TrishB @Weaponxgirl great choices 👍🏻 2y
TrishB @umbrellagirl anything you recommend for Margaret books? 2y
TrishB Read this trilogy for Eleanor - this is the first one. Or Sharon Penman 👍🏻 2y
Sophoclessweetheart @rubyslippersreads I‘ll be sure to grab a copy and make sure to pay more attention to Anne Of Cleves in my Studies from now on x 2y
Sophoclessweetheart @TrishB I‘ve heard a lot about this trilogy. I‘ll have to study a bit more about her then give it a try. 💛 2y
umbrellagirl @TrishB Susan King has written a novel about her, Queen Hereafter. She did one about Lady MacBeth as well. For non-fiction/biography, there‘s one by Alan Wilson. 2y
TrishB It‘s awesome 👍🏻 2y
TrishB @umbrellagirl have saved that book in my notes - sounds good thanks 👍🏻 2y
Itchyfeetreader Sticking with the British Royal family I am with @TrishB on Eleanor and I also have a soft spot for the lesser discussed British queen, Queen Anne. More generally this year I had planned to read more about some of the ordinary women who have been influential in history but have failed miserably so far! 2y
Sophoclessweetheart @Itchyfeetreader Most of my favourite women of history aren‘t royal. Though these responses would suggest that the royal women are most popular. Hah x 2y
Itchyfeetreader @Wanderingwithwords I think maybe just the most regularly appearing in both biography and literature :-) 2y
Sophoclessweetheart @Itchyfeetreader Definitely so! It‘s gravely unfortunate how little research has been done on so many amazing persons and events throughout history. 2y

As usual I‘m already reading a pile of other books but when I spotted the latest Philippa Gregory I couldn‘t resist... I love her books so much. It fascinates me to see how the royal family used to live and how brutal and restrictive their lives were. And I am fascinated by women‘s roles through history & even in present day, shaping the history to come.

So I‘ve finished The Last Tudor, which means I‘ve also finished Philippa Gregory‘s Plantagenet/Tudor series 😥 I enjoyed The Last Tudor, although I wouldn‘t say it was the strongest in the series. The first third that focused on Jane Grey the 9 days Queen was the strongest, but it was interesting to learn about her sisters in the others parts. God those times were cruel!

Anything Tudor means #PowerandthePassion . I loved this recent one by Gregory, which chronicles the Grey sisters - Jane was queen for 9 days before Mary Tudor took the throne! Each sister has their own ambition, but it‘s really the family that propels them to the sisters‘ positions in court. The more I read about the Grey sisters, the more saddened I am, especially for Jane. Family do not always have the best intentions in mind. #MarchIntoOz

Finished this audiobook today & I‘m sad because it is probably going to be the last in this series & I‘ve really enjoyed all of them!! This one is about the Grey sisters, the granddaughters of Henry theVIIIs sister, who are cousins to Queen Elizabeth & should be in line for the throne. Instead 1 after another they all end up prisoners of the Queen. By the end of this book I was not a fan of Elizabeth!!

Last book of 2017, and I think this is one of the best books by Gregory. Gregory looks at the Grey sisters - Jane Grey was Queen of England for 9 days, before Queen Mary overthrew her rule. Full of historical information on the period, I got so caught up in the story of the three women that I didn‘t realize how much time had passed! A great read, especially if you like British royal histories and fiction.

And, that made 89 books this year!

My #library closes Saturday for the holidays so I had to stop in and stock up 😝 I got halfway home and realized I had accidentally picked up The Bear and the Nightingale- which I already own and am currently reading. Oops. #bookhaul

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Sometime our library eyes are just too big! Sadly I understand, I‘ve done something very similar before! 2y
Christine11 Hiddensee sounds really interesting! I keep almost buying it ! 😊 2y

About to take a wet walk. #audiowalking

brilliantglow It's wet here today too. Rain is clearing out all of our snow. 2y
Reecaspieces @brilliantglow we very seldom get snow...glad you had something pretty to look at. 2y
brilliantglow It's only pretty out in the country. In the city it's just a grey salty messy of mush lol 2y

Reecaspieces @brilliantglow oh...I bet that is true. 2y
brilliantglow Lol so true. And then as soon as there is the smallest amount of snow everyone forgets how to drive in it and the roads become death traps since no-one slows down to account for the slippery conditions on the roads. It's honestly the worst. And I love going out snow shoeing or cross country skiing etc. But it's just awful in the city. 2y
Reecaspieces @brilliantglow down here...everyone panics and gets milk and bread..😂 2y
brilliantglow I have seen that. 😂😂😂 school buses being cancelled for a light dusting of snow. It's so funny for us because buses don't get cancelled even if we have 2 feet of snow. The exception is if ploughs haven't been out yet or if it's coupled with freezing rain but even then it's no guarentee. Truth be told though we are obviously more prepared to deal with those conditions 2y
Reecaspieces @brilliantglow yep...our whole town shuts down. Pretty funny. 2y

I adore Philippa Gregory and The Last Tudor certainly didn‘t disappoint. At times it felt like I was reading a soap opera but it‘s all based on true events which is so insane to think about. I would recommend all her Tudor novels.

Hurricane Irma knocked out the power and left most of the city under a curfew all day, so I'm drinking all the white wine and diving into one of my favorite author's latest novels!

Jane, as portrayed by the author, got on my nerves a bit, but after reading this, I'm totally on her side. Poor Jane (her fictional life is as tough as her real life). #teamjanegrey

Ummm...context clues tell me the young Jane Grey really doesn't like her cousin Elizabeth...

SusanInTiburon Judging not judging 😂 2y

This didn't disappoint. As excellent a read as all her other Tudor books. Though I usually know how these stories will end, I always find myself cheering for the main characters, hopeful for something different.
