This was a super quick read but I wasn‘t in the edge of my seat (a sign of a good thriller) and I found the characters weren‘t really deep enough for me. There were a couple of good, unexpected twists, but I felt that the very last chapter was a bit of an unnecessary stretch. Not bad but not great.

As usual I‘m already reading a pile of other books but when I spotted the latest Philippa Gregory I couldn‘t resist... I love her books so much. It fascinates me to see how the royal family used to live and how brutal and restrictive their lives were. And I am fascinated by women‘s roles through history & even in present day, shaping the history to come.

Hi all, I know I‘ve been MIA! Popping back in because I miss talking all things books 📚 Just finished this and I loved it. Historical fiction is usually a win for me, particularly when they feature female characters as I find it fascinating to see how we women have lived in the past and just how far we have come, how different our lives are now. A beautifully written weave of fact & fiction, I was hooked!

Having spent the end of the week moving back into our flat and 13 hours at work today I'm confident that my attempt at the #7in7readathon has gone totally out the window! But hey, it was a good effort.

This evening I have no idea where my backpack containing the outstanding items on my readathon are & my other half is asleep so I can't look properly (we haven't unpacked) so a glass of red & a reread of Tiger Eyes it is. Ctd in comments...

charissharpe I absolutely LOVE Tiger Eyes, it's one of my all time favourite books. I fell in love with Davey & her story as a teenager & learnt of by heart my first Spanish sentence from this book... my vocabulary has diversified slightly since then, as well as saying "when the lizards run" I can now ask for a glass of white wine with ice in ? 3.5/5 ⭐️ this is hands down one of the oddest books I've ever read. It would help to have a better grasp of scientific, linguistic & mathematical theory in order to read this than I have, but with a mind that happily believes in things that don't exist and very odd characters it was a fun read. It did take me a while to get into it though.

Two of my #7in7readathon down, 5 to go! Back to The Little Prince now amidst packing to move!

quietlycuriouskate Very nice! I'd love to set up a little free library outside my house but the local kids would surely trash it. (Seriously, they fight on the drive and film it on their phones.) 7y
charissharpe @River_Voice I think it would be similar if I tried it where I live too, although luckily no fighting & filming kids here! 3⭐️ an odd assortment of characters lead this book, their lives are all entwined and they're all incredibly self-centred, perhaps a realistic portrait of what we are like as a society these days?

I'm not sure that I particularly liked or cared for any of the characters, i kept reading as I was intrigued as to how it would play out, but for me not a pick.

Lunch time reading... feeling a little drowsy now after a big lunch but I have work at 4pm so no napping for me!

I am loving this book already, it's already causing various questions to bubble up in my mind. Can you imagine having to read books in secret? To have to sneakily listen to your favourite music? 5⭐️ read. I very much enjoyed this book. Told entirely by the main character as he reflects back on his choices over the past few years, including a relationship that has never left him and how torn he felt between his home (Pakistan) & his developing life in the US. Beautiful writing, Lahore became real to me off the page and an ending you expect just as you arrive there. Wholeheartedly recommend!

After a bout of serious reading whilst away my brain has been struggling a little & ive been book hopping with a few different reads. About to start Reading Lolita in Tehran which I'm looking forward to, and I'm back to work now so I'll be reading a little over the evenings after work. Do you ever find that sometimes you're too scattered to concentrate on any one book?

#diversereads

Leniverse Frequently. A lot of the books I like to read are a bit exhausting, either due to writing style or content. A chapter or two will do, and then I need something different. 7y
charissharpe @Leniverse I think that's it, I've got a few non-fiction books on the go and they tend to be one or two chapters at a time kinda books. 7y
Leniverse I make sure to always have some short stories and fast paced reads on hand for "refreshment" and I also do buddy reads of a few chapters a week. That way I end up not just reading a lot more books, but I find I get through the slow/difficult ones at a faster and steadier rate too. It just becomes a rhythm, to think one book at breakfast, another at afternoon, and a third for bedtime. 7y
See All 10 Comments
charissharpe @Leniverse very organised! But it sounds as though it works for you. I might have to try a buddy read. 7y
Leniverse Not quite as organised as it sounds. I still sometimes end up with half read books displaced for a couple of months, and frequently find myself with 8 books to juggle instead of 3. 😆 7y

Today has been an interesting day. The wind is so strong it's shaking our pod and we've watched numerous families pack up their tents and go home. I found myself in conversation with Rita Banerji on Twitter this morning having only recently come across her via The War on Women #smallworld. I've learned about women using social media to highlight their charity causes or advocacy roles and I've snorted to myself at the sexism we... (ctd in comments)

charissharpe ...inflict upon ourselves via women's magazines. Why shouldn't we age gracefully? Why shouldn't we be able to drive? Why on Earth should wearing high heels to work be a company policy? Why should women have to fight to overturn a legal ruling that it's okay to rape them if their their rapist marries them after? Thanks to the rain I've soaked up a lot today. #womensrights #equalitymatters 7y

I was excited about this book and liked the premise. It started off interestingly enough but it didn't quite go the way I thought that it might. I was disappointed to read that the author essentially expected us to all behave like men once the power activated and I disliked the choice to mirror Saudi Arabia's current conditions. It's thought-provoking though. 3/5 ⭐️

#scifi #sciencefiction

catebutler I read a lot of physical books, but I do enjoy my eBooks when I travel. Enjoy your reading! 7y
charissharpe @catebutler me too, I often only take my kindle. But we're staying in a pod on a campsite where you have to pay for wifi, so I might just use the kindle app on my phone too, that way I can carry on with The Hobbit readalong on my kindle or phone & have another book on the go on the other 😂 we're taking a few physical books too. 7y
Texreader ❤️ Pillars!! Just finished rewatching the miniseries. I so enjoy your posts on Litsy! Glad you are here!! 7y

Leniverse Why do you need wifi to use your kindle? I only need wifi to download books, and I have enough books on my kindle to last the rest of the year! 7y
charissharpe @Texreader thank you so much Karen, I'm very much enjoying Litsy, such a lovely community 😊 7y
charissharpe @Leniverse I have the kindle app on my iPad rather than an actual kindle, it doesn't let me switch books unless I'm in wifi mode 😒 7y
charissharpe @Texreader ps. I didn't know there was a mini series to watch? 7y
catebutler I think that's a good idea! It sounds like you definitely are a prepared packer. I'll be doing the same in a couple of weeks. It is quite the challenge to decide which books to pack and how many. The idea of running out of reading material is quite a scary thought! 😅 7y
Texreader @conversationswithcharis It was on Starz (which I don't get) years ago. I bought the DVD set as soon as it was out. It has a younger Eddie Redmayne and Haley Atwell. I also got the set for World Without End but haven't watched it in years. 7y
charissharpe @catebutler on my last trip away I did run out of books, I had to make do with a magazine! 😩😜 7y
charissharpe @Texreader I'll have to look it up x 7y

This will be me really soon... today is my last day at work & then I'm on holiday! We're off to Dorset & it will probably rain so somehow I don't think I'll look quite as glam as the lady in this pic (found via Pinterest) 😂 but I really don't mind!

Taking The Pillars of the Earth, The Bad-Ass Librarians of Timbuktu and The Stars Are Legion books with me to read & am hoping to keep up with #lotrchapteraday & The War on Women on my kindle 📖

Texreader Sounds like wonderful me-time 7y
Texreader Didn't mean to put a spoiler tab on that! Late here... 7y

Texreader 3:30 check in! Why can't I just sleep!?!? 7y

I'm off to work for the evening but wish I was still curled up with a book... started Cold Earth by Ann Cleves today to counteract the heaviness of my non-fiction reading list! Saving the rest of The Pillars of the Earth for the drive down to Dorset on Saturday (just under half to go!) 📚

The War on Women | Sue Lloyd Roberts

Just read another chapter of The War on Women, on honour killings. Prevalent in Pakistan, the Kurdish region of Turkey and still taking place in Jordan, it also happens here in England. Made even more poignant with the recent news of the death of 19 years old Celine Dookhan in London in an alleged honour killing after she (an Indian Muslim) began a relationship with an Arab man.

zsuzsanna_reads Also this: women are sold as slaves by ISIS at slave markets and on instant messaging apps. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/jul/25/slaves-of-isis-the-long-walk-of-th... 7y
quietlycuriouskate I will read this book but not yet; I need to work on defusing a few psyche-bombs first. 7y
charissharpe @zsuzsanna_reads I have no words, that article has just made me cry, I feel so helpless. Thank you for sharing the link x 7y
charissharpe @River_Voice yes, it is an upsetting book, I'm glad I'm reading it but it does make me feel small and helpless. All I feel I can do is share the stories I come across so that these women's stories are not hidden away 😔 7y

Pickpick

I absolutely love this book, it's the second time I've read it. In turns laugh out loud hilarious and in others, sad, it is the real life story of Simon Dawson & his wife Debbie moving to Exmoor from London & starting their own smallholding.
Warning: don't read if you're vegan.

GarthRanzz Oh this is going right onto my stack! Sounds like The Good Life! 7y
charissharpe @GarthRanzz it's brilliant, I loved it 👍 7y
GarthRanzz Just ordered a copy from Abe Books! Can't wait for it to come in. 7y

After escaping the wood elves in barrels and floating along the river forever Bilbo & the dwarves end up spending two weeks in Lake Town, feasting & feted although poor Bilbo has a terrible cold. A short chapter today & the urge to keep reading... 😳

Panpan

I read this book ages ago & rediscovered it recently in my kindle library and really couldn't remember it at all so decided to reread. It's really really predictable and a bit OTT in the "they're so hot for each other but know they shouldn't be" vein. I won't be finishing it, for me it's a pan.

I didn't buy the next in the series which should have given me a clue...
