A Dead Djinn in Cairo
A Dead Djinn in Cairo: A Tor.Com Original | P. Djeli Clark
18 posts | 13 read | 26 to read
Egypt, 1912. In an alternate Cairo infused with the otherworldly, the Ministry of Alchemy, Enchantments and Supernatural Entities investigate disturbances between the mortal and the (possibly) divine. What starts off as an odd suicide case for Special Investigator Fatma el-Sha’arawi leads her through the city’s underbelly as she encounters rampaging ghouls, saucy assassins, clockwork angels, and plot that could unravel time itself, in P. Djèlí Clark's Tor.Com Original, A Dead Djinn in Cairo. At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

Trying to finish one more book this evening so not posting my June wrap up yet, but figured I could do a quick post on some of the LGBTQ books I read this month.

As Casey McQustin posted in her insta story today, Pride month isn't the only good time to read LGBTQ books by *any means* but it does give us a good excuse to celebrate these books and authors!

Such a great short story about an alternate Cairo in the early 1900s where the Egyptian Ministry of Alchemy, Enchantments, & Supernatural Entities manages the supernatural djinn & angels living in the city alongside humans. Read this in anticipation of The Haunting of Tram Car 015 since it's sort of a prequel. I've loved everything I've read by Clark so far & definitely recommend this one:

This book is set in the same universe as The Haunting of Tram Car 015, a world I really love! This is actually the first story in the series, so I‘ve gone a bit backwards, but it didn‘t make *too* much of a difference. I really love Clark‘s writing and hope he sets more stories in this alternate history version of Cairo.

Ashley_Nicoletto I love this author. Did you read this one? It was fantastic. 5mo
DGRachel I downloaded this yesterday because I love the title. Looking forward to reading it! 5mo
Angitron @Ashley_Nicoletto I just started reading it the other day, right after I finished Dead Djinn in Cairo. It was like “Whelp, loved this...let‘s do another one.” 😂 Loving it so far! He‘s such a fantastic world builder! 5mo
Angitron @DGRachel Hope you enjoy it! 😊 5mo

A companion story set before the events (and referenced in) in The Haunting of Tram Car 105 except with Fatma el-Sha‘arawi as the lead investigator in a baffling case with the fate of the world hanging in the balance! Heady stuff for a story with less than 50 pages! I can only imagine how epic a full length novel would be.

CoffeeK8 Which would you recommend reading first? 6mo
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @CoffeeK8, they stand alone but I‘d recommend starting with this one - as some of the characters appear in the next story 6mo

A well constructed novella, great pace of action. We get to know the main character and the supporting ones as the action and story are evolving. Good mythology. I'm really looking for Fatma's next investigation. #booked2019 #booked2019winter #femaledetective

Cinfhen Sounds like a fascinating setting - tagging my cohosts @BarbaraTheBibliophage @4thhouseontheleft 7mo

Fantasy and historical fiction are both genres that require a lot of worldbuilding. What do you think of how fantasy worldbuilding and historical worldbuilding are used together here? How does it compare to stories that build a world out of one or the other rather than both? #litereads

A Dead Djinn in Cairo is filled with fantasy elements that are distinctly inspired by the mythos in Middle Eastern and North African countries. What do you think of how Clark used these elements in this story and adapted them for this fantasy setting? #litereads

Modern history isn't the most common area of Egyptian history seen in western cultures. What do you think of how Clark used 1912 in Egypt as his setting for A Dead Djinn in Cairo? How do you think that setting specifically benefits this story? #litereads

Fatma el-Sha‘arawi is an investigator for Egypt‘s Ministry of Alchemy, Enchantments & Supernatural Entities in a steampunk 19th century Cairo filled with supernatural creatures. I really hope there are more and longer books featuring this character. This one is short, fun, and just a little reminiscent of Lovecraft. I loved the world building in it.

Thanks to everyone who entered my #LiLNugGiveaway!

It was a tough call, but Moxie & I went with @Grrlbrarian & her recommendation of the tagged novella, “A Dead Djinn in Cairo.” Three phrases cinched the deal: “alchemy”, “enchantments”, & “supernatural entities.” SOLD.

@Grrlbrarian The book I‘ve chosen from your TBR is one I‘ve been meaning to read, too! We should try to get our ish together & read it at the same time! 😉

Congrats! 🎉

Donald.Elbert Congratulations! Woot woot! 1y
monalyisha @Grrlbrarian I‘ll tag you when your prize goes out, which I imagine will be within the week. 🤗📬 Oh! And I always almost forget this part: email me with your address. 😅 monalyisha@gmail.com (edited) 1y

For my #LilNugGiveaway entry, I recommend Dead Djinn in Cairo. It‘s TEENY - 46 pages - but delivers a full & fascinating world. Fatma el-Sha‘awari is a special investigator for the Ministry of Alchemy, Enchantments, & Supernatural Entities who must work out who drained a djinn of blood in colonial alt-Cairo. Plenty of paranormal personae, Fatma is a strong savvy detective, and you‘ll only regret how quickly you‘ve read it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ And congrats!

monalyisha OH, this looks *right* up my alley! Thanks for entering. 🤗 1y
JulietteGF Hi @Grrlbrarian and @monalyisha I sent to you both a private message on Instagram concerning a package I received... Litsy has no private message function, so that's the only way of contacting you both I could think of... 14mo
monalyisha Soo... @Grrlbrarian I‘m a hot mess & I DID actually mix up the two packages I sent out. I can‘t believe I actually did that. I thought I was just being neurotic worrying about it. 🙄 Anyway...you should be getting the #shortstoryswap package that‘s meant for @JulietteGF & she got your #LilNugGiveaway. She said she‘s willing to fwd you the correct package. Any chance you could do the same? Maybe I can Venmo you the postage amount? God, I suck. 😂😭 14mo

Grrlbrarian Sure, I‘d be happy to resend the package to @JulietteGF No problem. And you do NOT suck! Just happy to get such lovely bookmail! Thanks again! 14mo
JulietteGF @Grrlbrarian Hi, I have sent you a private message on Instagram, I thought it would be easier to exchange our addresses there. 14mo
Grrlbrarian Thanks, @JulietteGF Will do! 14mo
CSeydel @monalyisha oh no this is awful but I can‘t help laughing... I‘m sorry. I have this same feeling of panic every time I ship two packages at once that I‘ve somehow mixed them up. 14mo
monalyisha @Cseydel I still can‘t believe (and yet can believe 🤦‍♀️) that I mixed them up. Thankfully, both @JulietteGF & @Grrlbrarian have been super cool about it & have agreed to ship each other the packages that were meant for each of them. I‘m quietly mortified. 😂 (edited) 14mo
CSeydel @monalyisha I remember you actually mentioning in your post after you mailed them something about “if I didn‘t mix them up” and I thought to myself “boy I know that feeling!” I‘m so sorry for you but I can totally relate. 14mo
monalyisha @Cseydel I wonder how many times I‘ll obsessively check & recheck the address of the next thing I send. 😏 (edited) 14mo
