A stand-alone fantasy tale from Seanan McGuire's Alex-award winning Wayward Children series, which began in the Alex, Hugo, Nebula, and Locus Award-winning, World Fantasy Award finalist, Tiptree Honor List Every Heart a Doorway This fourth entry and prequel tells the story of Lundy, a very serious young girl who would rather study and dream than become a respectable housewife and live up to the expectations of the world around her. As well she should. When she finds a doorway to a world founded on logic and reason, riddles and lies, she thinks she's found her paradise. Alas, everything costs at the goblin market, and when her time there is drawing to a close, she makes the kind of bargain that never plays out well. Fourth, and definitely last, book of #24in48 done. These novellas continue to be unlike any other fantasy books I‘ve ever read. They‘re just so well-written and atmospheric. Loved it and sad that the next one isn‘t out until January.

There has not been one book in this series that I haven't loved. Although the books are on the shorter side, they pack a big punch. I could just wrap myself up in the prose. Not to mention every cover of this series is amazing. I must own them all someday!! 😍

Each book in this series has been so different & I love it! I felt really sorry for Lundy & could appreciate why she made the choices she did. I did feel the story was a little rushed in places, but I‘ve had this issue with every book. I guess it‘s expected when you read a novella & when you love a series so much & want to know every detail possible!

I wonder what we will learn about next in this series? 🤔

I really enjoyed this story of Lundy‘s goblin market world. McGuire is just so good with the details of these worlds. As per usual in this series, most of the action takes place off stage, but I didn‘t mind. I listened to this, which was excellent, but I think I need to read the physical book to understand the ending a little better.

I love The Wayward Children series. They are fairytale retellings about children who have doors open to them to fantasy worlds. These worlds are not all fantasy at all, but are usually what the child needs at the time. What makes these novellas special is that Seanan McGuire is able to use these fantastical storylines to get at some deep truths about our lives. That‘s special.
Read for #scallywagathon

So true! Why do we lose this remarkable originality as we age?

GingerAntics Part of the reason is all these bloody standardised tests. They certainly don‘t standardise education or intelligence, but they do a great job of making our children standardised and just like everyone else. 2mo

At home sick today - I have a strange pain in my side, and I‘m not sure yet whether it‘s an ovarian cyst or my appendix, so I‘m basically waiting to see if I get any other symptoms or get better! In the meantime, I‘ve decided to participate in the tail end of the #Scallywagathon! This book is for prompt 4: low tide (less than 200 pages).

The beginning is giving me Harry Potter vibes, which is unusual for Seanan

Well that was just as delightful as a chocolate layer cake covered in ganache. (Think I‘m hungry)

I gave it 5 stars for the writing and the characters and Seanan‘s gorgeous imagination, but i do agree with another commenter that there was little action in this one. If you like dark fairytales interwoven with the real world try the series - it starts with Every Heat A Doorway

Reggie Awww, Paula☝🏽 that‘s such a cute story!!! The vampire short story book I‘m reading contains a story by Seanan and even though I don‘t think it‘s a vampire story, I‘ll be damned if she didn‘t write the two most beautiful paragraphs about growing into adolescence that made me tear up. 2mo

2.5/5 ?
Started well, ending was heartbreaking but nothing much happened in the middle, apart from sermonising on "fair value". The whole thing was half-assed and the ending, though impactful, didn't really make up for the dullness of the rest of the book.
I'm starting to think that probably nothing will top the first two books in the series.

4th book in the Wayward Series completed. This was a quick read, a good breather from the heavy going novels I have been reading. It was good to find out more about Lundy and what “fair value” means, amidst sacrifice, broken promises, lost youth, & consequences of indecision. This seemed like a choppy read, alternating from one world to the next, never really providing details, just skimming the surface - yet it worked! #WomenReadWomen2019

I loved this story! I loved exploring Lundy's background and I understand the pull she felt to remain a part of both worlds. The writing here is strong and the characters are entertaining.
I have an interesting relationship with this series. I absolutely loved books 2 & 4 but didn't think much of 1 & 3. Which I think completely suits my personality - the worlds of logic and reason appeal to me but not nonsense. That's amazing writing!

Ohhhh, I loved this. Fourth in the Wayward Children series, this one gives us Lundy‘s portal story. And so far with this series, I like the portal stories best. McGuire builds a compelling world of logic and bargains, “fair value” and feathers—not the Goblin Market or the sister relationship I anticipated, but a world all its own. This may supplant Down Among the Sticks and Bones as my favorite of the series—but I can‘t quite decide yet!

I've enjoyed each Wayward Children novella more than the last, and IN AN ABSENT DREAM is no exception. All its conventional adventures happen off screen while the text concerns itself with the mechanics of encountering, navigating, and loving a magical world with firm (yet often whimsical) rules. It's beautifully done and very much in line with what I want portal fantasy to do at this point in its existence.

I wasn‘t so sure about “The Wayward Children” series initially. For much of the first book, McGuire‘s writing seemed *too* ostentatiously quirky. It reminded me of “The Magicians” (Grossman) & “Fairyland” (Valente) but I didn‘t like it nearly as much. It grew on me, though — & kept on growing. The second book & this one are my favorites. I liked this so much...until it abruptly ended! I‘ll miss The Goblin Market & it‘s wildly unstable inhabitants.

I FINALLY finished reading for book club(s), which means I can start this baby!

I‘m at the part where Moon deposits the protagonist, Katherine Victoria Lundy, at The Archivist‘s abode, so she can learn the rules of her new world (The Goblin Market). One rule is: “Names have power,” so Katherine must keep her true name a secret & choose a new one. She goes with “Lundy,” which is, disappointingly, just her last name.

What would you call yourself?

monalyisha I might want something that could double as my name back in “the real world.” Maybe “Lane” (like “path” or “way,” & also one of my favorite “Gilmore Girls” characters). Or “Elspeth,” which has always sounded to me a little like it should be how you say “spell” in Pig Latin. 😆✨ But I‘m also intrigued by choosing a name that‘s just a straight-up NOUN. 5mo
ravenlee It‘s a little like choosing an online avatar, isn‘t it? But you can‘t use your own name as part of it. 5mo
monalyisha @ravenlee I was thinking that! But with a specific mood/bent to it. My husband‘s online fantasy-game avatar is “Kuurth.” 😅 (edited) 5mo

greenhairdontcare @monalyisha Done & done! I think part of it is because I‘m a kinder teacher & have worked with young children for 16 years. There are A LOT of names that I associate with the children I work/worked with. I‘m also not that imaginative when it comes to names. 🤣 5mo
monalyisha @greenhairdontcare Yes! I work with kids, too. One bonus, though, is that you know the name trends ahead of time & won‘t accidentally & unknowingly fall into naming your child the same thing as everyone else! 5mo
Emilymdxn I answer to ‘Hippo‘ because it‘s what my boyfriend calls me (it sounds like a body shaming comment but it‘s a reference to a comic about being brave we shared when I was anxious, so it‘s sweet I promise!) and I‘ve always loved the name Eadwacer but never had the chance to use it. It‘s an untranslatable Anglo Saxon word that‘s part of my favourite piece of writing of all time so would love to ‘claim it‘ as my name 5mo

This quote highlights one of the aspects of the Wayward Children series that speaks to me. I find myself gravitating towards stories where the world isn't sunshine and rainbows, kids learn early that life isn't fair, and endings are messy.
