Umbrella Academy Volume 1: Apocalypse Suite
Umbrella Academy Volume 1: Apocalypse Suite | Gerard Way
In an inexplicable worldwide event, forty-seven extraordinary children were spontaneously born to women who'd previously shown no signs of pregnancy. Millionaire inventor Reginald Hargreeves adopted seven of the children; when asked why, his only explanation was, "To save the world." These seven children form the Umbrella Academy, a dysfunctional family of superheroes with bizarre powers. Their first adventure at the age of ten pits them against an erratic and deadly Eiffel Tower, piloted by the fearsome zombie-robot Gustave Eiffel. Nearly a decade later, the team disbands, but when Hargreeves unexpectedly dies, these disgruntled siblings reunite just in time to save the world once again. • This volume collects the first six-issue series, as well as out-of-print short stories and an expanded sketchbook section featuring work by Gabriel Bá, James Jean, and Gerard Way. • "Flawless…stylish, imaginative."-Newsarama • Listed as one of the Top Ten Great Graphic Novels for Teens by the Young Adult Library Service Association (YALSA). • Amazon.com's #1 Graphic Novel of 2008! • A New York Times bestseller!

I am usually not drawn to this genre, but the show looked fascinating. I wanted to read the series of graphic novels before diving into the show. These books are amazing. The show differs slightly, but that was great too. It was awesome moving out of my element and digging into these! I preordered the next one! (The pic is from Volume 1.)

#bfc #bfcr2 week 1 check-in

goals - 5000 steps 4/7 days! And one of the low days included a gym workout, so 5/7 is a pretty good start! Need to work on shelving the frantic schedule at work so I take time for a little mental health this next week. I'll start by meditating now... Right after I scroll through litsy 😉

All my walks were audiowalks, and I finished the tagged graphic novel. 👍💃🏻

Is it horrible to say I liked the TV show better? I know its a rare instance when you think the movie/show is better than the actual book, but in this case it happened. I‘m not saying the comics were bad but there didn‘t seem like a lot of questions were answered; especially in the first volume. But its a really creative idea and the art was great so I‘m looking forward to how the story continues in vol 3. Vol 1: 3/5🌟 Vol 2: 4/5🌟

TheLibrarian I really enjoyed the show but haven't started the comics yet. 1mo
cobwebmoth I agree. The comics are decent, but I feel like the show is more enjoyable. 1mo
ofclumsywords @cobwebmoth I‘m so relieved!! I thought I was one of the only with the unpopular opinion, I‘ve heard nothing but good things about the comics 1mo
ofclumsywords @TheLibrarian the show was absolutely amazing and it went into so much more depth with the character backgrounds! I can‘t wait for season two. 1mo

I am reading Umbrella Academy Vol. 1:Apocalypse Suite for the “When Marnie Was There”- “chosen family” prompt for the Ghibliathon. It‘s a readathon that is Studio Ghibliathon themed and I am so exited about this theme and readthon!! Anyone else doing this prompt? Have you read this series? How do you think it compares to the Netflix show?

I've never ventured into the graphic novel / Comic section of my library before! So I was pleasantly shocked to see that my library has these two sitting there, waiting for me😆 Read them both in one sitting and really liked them. Still prefer the Netflix series more 😁🙈 Can't wait for season 2!

I didn‘t enjoy this like others have. It was alright, but it certainly didn‘t feel special. It was a pretty normal superhero story, nothing very memorable in my opinion. I don‘t know if I‘ll continue this series. I read this by my husband wants us to watch the Netflix series. I read this on my iPad via #hoopla

I don't read graphic novels usually but I was intrigued after watching Umbrella Academy on Netflix. I enjoyed reading this much more than I expected to. The addition of the short stories at the end was a fun surprise. While this graphic novel differs very slighty from the screen adaption, it doesn't change the overall plot. I plan to buy the next volumes, as well, after enjoying this one.

I haven't watch the show yet but I've heard so many great things about it and I think I set my expectations really high for this one. In the end this comic book feel a little flat for me because there was so much going on and it made it hard for me to connect with any of the characters.
I still plan to check out the show with equally high expectations.

Tashreads I really enjoyed the show! 3mo
rretzler I‘ve watched about half of the show and am enjoying it. I read one of the comics and it was just so-so. I loved comics when I was younger but most of them fall flat with me these days. I think perhaps in most comics (as opposed to graphic novels), there doesn‘t seem to be any real characterization. The pictures don‘t seem to tell as much of the story as words can. So I guess a picture is not necessarily worth 1,000 words. 😝 3mo
readordierachel The show is awesome. I tried reading the comic and was similarly underwhelmed. 3mo

I LOVED the Netflix series and decided to check out the graphic novels since I have to wait for season two. Everything I love about the show is completely absent from the comic. The character development, diversity, and suspense about the coming apocalypse. Maybe it‘s the pacing of the story? I do really like the design of the White Violin. I‘ll read volume two despite my reservations here. #UmbrellaAcademy #GraphicNovels

Been on a comics kick since getting a 2-in-1 Chromebook and raiding the comics selection on Kindle Unlimited. I'm curious to see what later volumes of Umbrella Academy bring (this one was MEH for me); and Batman: Hush was awesome! Unfortunately, Jim Lee isn't immune to idealizing women in comics... 💢💢💢

I haven‘t read the whole suite, just the first installment that I borrowed from Kindle Unlimited. It was okay, but I don‘t have any desire to purchase the rest of the suite. There wasn‘t a lot to it. This was such a quick and interesting read! (Granted, reading comics tends to go by super quickly.) The art work was unique and added so much to the story. I was really intrigued by the show and then finding out that Gerard Way was the author of these comics, I had to read them! The comics add to the show and the show adds to the comics. They‘re super complimentary of each other and I highly recommend both this new Netflix series and these comics.

Honestly, I‘m not even sure what I just read but I definitely think it had hints of awesome inside a chaotic, intriguing, whack-a-doodle, pretty good comic. All of which is to say, it‘s the story of a group of misfit kids adopted by a strange & mysterious man. They all, or almost all, have powers which they use to fight bad guys—including the Eiffel Tower (yes I wrote that)—and others. Fun & weird & now on to the Netflix series.
