Beautiful Ruins
Beautiful Ruins | Jess Walter
The No. 1 New York Times BestsellerJess Walter's Beautiful Ruins is a gorgeous, glamorous novel set in 1960s Italy and a modern Hollywood studio. The story begins in 1962. Somewhere on a rocky patch of the sun-drenched Italian coastline a young innkeeper, chest-deep in daydreams, looks out over the incandescent waters of the Ligurian Sea and views an apparition: a beautiful woman, a vision in white, approaching him on a boat. She is an American starlet, he soon learns, and she is dying. And the story begins again today, half a world away in Hollywood, when an elderly Italian man shows up on a movie studio's back lot searching for the woman he last saw at his hotel fifty years before.Gloriously inventive, funny, tender and constantly surprising, Beautiful Ruins is a novel full of fabulous and yet very flawed people, all of them striving towards another sort of life, a future that is both delightful and yet, tantalizingly, seems just out of reach.'Magic...A monument to crazy love with a deeply romantic heart' New York Times'A novel shot in sparkly Technicolor' Booklist'Hilarious and compelling' Esquire

This is my review for a #tbrjarpick I listened to this month. I like the cover for this book. It‘s beautiful. I‘ve never been to Italy but I‘m sure it‘s a beautiful place. Unfortunately, I didn‘t like this book that much. I‘m going to be picking my next #tbrjarpick.

I‘m currently listening to Beautiful Ruins by Jess Walter. I have 10 hours and 38 minutes left in the audiobook. I don‘t know what to think about this audiobook. I‘m in the middle of the second chapter and I‘m not liking it very much right now. I‘ve read reviews saying that this book gets better but other people have also said that it doesn‘t get better. After I finish this chapter, I will decide whether I want to finish this or not.

I finished The Last Days Of August by Jon Ronson. My next #tbrjarpick is...Beautiful Ruins by Jess Walter. Here‘s what it‘s about:”The story begins in 1962. On a rocky patch of the sun-drenched Italian coastline, a young innkeeper, chest-deep in daydreams, looks out over the incandescent waters of the Ligurian Sea and spies an apparition: a tall, thin woman, a vision in white, approaching him on a boat.” This sounds interesting.

My favorite quote from Beautiful Ruins, “Stories are people. I‘m a story, you‘re a story...Our stories go in every direction, but sometimes, if we‘re lucky, our stories join into one, and for awhile, we‘re less alone.”

I picked this up because I was in desperate need of an audiobook for a long, solo car trip, and this was recommended both as lovely book with an amazing narrator (Edoardo Ballerini). I was not disappointed. The story was sweet and lovely, and Ballerini made it come alive in ways I don‘t think I could‘ve done for myself if I was reading the text. Add this to your summer audiobook TBR.

This was my book club‘s third book, and the first one I was a little meh about. It was okay throughout, although I never really liked any of the characters. It had some good moments/lines. Not my usual wheelhouse, but that‘s sort of the point of the book club.

I missed yesterday‘s #TinselTown prompt for #SeasonsReadings, but saw this on FB this morning and it made me chuckle! When combing my shelves for anything Hollywood-related, I came across the tagged book. It‘s supposed to be a bit of a satire of Hollywood culture... but it‘s still on my TBR, so I don‘t really know. 😂

I bought this book a while ago via Audible, but I just got around to reading/listening to it recently. So, I‘m not sure what initially drew me to it. I suspect it was the cover and the fact that it was set in Italy, a country I love. It was an interesting premise, but it took me a while to get into it. While I didn‘t fall head over heels for this novel, I did end up enjoying it.

TheKidUpstairs This was purely a cover- buy for me too. And I feel the same, liked it but didn't love it as much as I'd wanted to. It did make me want to hole up in some little hotel in a small coastal town in Italy, though! 9mo
PurpleyPumpkin @TheKidUpstairs Glad it wasn‘t just me! So many reviewers seemed to love it that I felt kinda bad. I gave it 3 ⭐️ on GR and felt that was generous. Still, I loved the Italy parts and the book did make me want to rush back for a visit! 9mo
AlaMich I‘m with you on the rating, but I did feel that the audio added to the book. 8mo
PurpleyPumpkin @AlaMich Yes, I completely agree! Audio was the way to go. I‘m not sure I would have continued if I‘d been reading a physical copy. The characterization of Richard Burton was hilarious! He kept me listening. 8mo

I love this book! This intertwined story that spans over decades is so well done. It has the right amount of romance, sadness, beauty, and humor. Such a unique story that was completely captivating.

Book setting was Italy so I switched from tea to espresso. So many messed up people in this book, I'm feeling really good about myself. Or may that's the espresso talking.☕

1. I keep seeing these 2 books. They make me think of summer and I can‘t wait to read them!
2. I always pick a different book for vacation so I don‘t really have a favorite. Last book I took on vacation was All The Missing Girls by Megan Miranda.
3. Sunsets and long days!
4. Lots of weekend visits to our cabin and getting things ready for our fall wedding...bridal shower/bachelorette are in August! 😁 @wanderinglynn #HelloThursday

@LoverofLit the last month has been busy, but I finally finished this lovely book! It made me want to go to Italy again or watch some old Liz Taylor/Richard Burton movies. Pasquale may be the book's only character I actually liked and I'm happy how his life turned out.

LoverofLit I adored Pasqual and felt the same kind of nostalgic, old world Italian charm. I'm glad you liked it 💕 14mo

This novel has beauty and innocence - a remote Italian village in the 60s, a dying blonde movie star, a romantic young man with limited English - and viperish misogyny -
90s Hollywood with soul sucking movie sharks, wannabes and jaded personal assistants. Also theres part of a movie script, a play and a chapter from a WW2 memoir. A beautiful mess perhaps! I almost gave up during the Hollywood scenes but by the end it was worth it ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
